HOW TO GET AROUND AMSTERDAM?
Parking
Public transport
Ferry
Parking in the city centre can cost up to €5.- an hour and it’s hard to find a parking spot. If you arrived by car the best way to park it is by using Park&Ride.
In Amsterdam public transport is a good way to get around. The tram rides from 06:00-00:30 and will get you to most places where you want to go. But when you buy your tickets on the tram or bus it's quite expensive. You can buy a day or multiple day pass to get around much cheaper. They’re available at GVB offices or the I Amsterdam Visitor centres.
To get to the north side of Amsterdam, you can use the free ferries that depart form the north side of Amsterdam Centraal train station.
If you want to know which tram, bus or metro you should take to get around, check out 9292.nl/en.
Boat tours Amsterdam is beautiful from the canals. A boat tour may sound like a tourist trap, but it’s a must do if you want to experience the city from it’s most beautiful side.
From Amsterdam Central to the airport: The train will take you to the airport in 20 mins. You can also take a taxi from the apartment to Schiphol, that will cost you around €45,-. You can also use taxi services like Uber, Abel or Tinker on which we have some special deals for you.
Bicycle The best way to get around town is by bicycle. We offer you 10% discount on the amazing (and not tourist looking) bikes from blackbikes. Ask your host for more info!

Taxi Taxi’s are convenient during the late night or outside the direct city centre. You have conventional taxi’s like TCA or you can use an Uber Black/X (black=premium) We also have a taxi sharing option which is called Abel and is relatively cheap!

LITE/DARK
Centre/North Built during the city’s Golden Age, the three parallel canals are interconnected with streets lled with shopping, eating and drinking opportunities. The Canal Ring is made up of Herengracht, Keizersgracht and Prinsengracht. The Canal Ring includes the city’s two main nightlife and culture squares. Leidseplein features such legendary concert halls as Paradiso and Melkweg. Rembrandtplein has several bars, two large nightclubs (Escape and Air), and ‘old world’ evocative treasures such as De Kroon and Café Schiller. The whole area is dotted with Amsterdam’s beloved neighbourhood ‘brown cafes’.
For the freshest and healthiest homemade breakfast, lunch and (early) dinner you should go to one of the beautiful LITE/DARK bars. The Ysbreeker
East Dappermarkt is one of the country’s oldest - and best - outdoor markets. It forms the multicultural heart of the neighbourhood along with such major arteries as Javastraat, which once only provided every manner of global grocery but is now beginning to feature more upscale cafes and terraces. One of the city’s largest general hospitals, OLVG, is also located here. Two stellar city parks, Oosterpark and Flevopark, provide quick escape from the relatively busy streets. Besides many cheap ethnic eateries and supermarkets, the area is attracting much more higher-end cafes and restaurants who are often re-inventing many of the area’s industrial monuments. On sunny days, the parks and terraces are filled with nice people.
The Ysbreeker is located next to the Amstel river. The building has a rich history; the large stained glass windows and the gorgeous historical floor are still intact. The Ysbreeker is a meeting place for Amsterdam people and is famous for its large and sunny terrace. There are many things people can enjoy here. We are open from 08.00 am until 01.00 am for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Our menu varies from burgers to lobster and everything in between. With 10 Dutch and Amsterdam beers on tap, a European wine list with all wines available per glass and bottle and a variety of Amsterdam appetizers this is the place to be for a full Amsterdam experience.
Other Hotspots Beukenplein This ‘gezellige’ or cozy square houses a couple of nice restaurants like Smokin’ Barrels, that serves a great surf and turf, Rotisserie where you can have some tasty cocktails and chicken and Maxwell.
Javastraat One of the nicest streets in Amsterdam East is surely the Java Street. Full of retailers and products from all over the world as well as super trendy hotspots. At the local shops you buy the best vegetables, bread, herbs and spices. Afterwards you just sit down at one of the many hotspots for a coffee, lunch or cocktail.

More than 250 stalls offer from Monday / Saturday accommodate more than 160 market traders. The Dapper Market attracts visitors from throughout the country and is anything but a tourist market, but rather a community-oriented global market that has grown along with the neighborhood. The composition of the offering is different each day and includes a worldwide assortment of food and non-food.

Dignita Craving some delicious brunch? Or a strong coffee? Perhaps a cocktail? Whatever it is, come enjoy it at Dignita! The place where you eat well, do good and experience all day brunch. Our second social enterprise, the Dignita store, is located in the center of the Red Light District. Visit the ‘store with a story’ and enjoy a free presentation to learn about what’s really happening in the Red Light District.
South Oud Zuid is central: on one end you have Amsterdam’s nightlife and culture square Leidseplein and on the other Amstelveenseweg that is developing into a true culinary boulevard. And throughout the neighbourhood, a new bar seems to pop up every week. But for residents, firm favourites remain Vondelpark’s Vondelpark3 and Blauwe Theehuis. The Vondelpark remains Amsterdam’s most densely populated placeto-be whenever the sun shines. Besides this it’s nice to live near one of the greatest overviews of Western Art in the world. Two of the main museums, the Rijksmuseum and the Stedelijk Museum. For big shopping streets you can go to the PC Hooftstraat, Jacob Obrechtstraat, Cornelis Schuytstraat and Beethovenstraat.
Eat well at Dignita with dishes that range from vegan to gluten-free and from healthy to just insanely good. Enjoy our ‘Hot Smoked Salmon Royale’, ‘American Pancakes Stack’, ‘Earthworks Salad Bowl’, or one of our other dishes made from scratch. Come and do good with us, Dignita is part of the Not For Sale social enterprise model, and therefore 100% of our profits go towards supporting a vulnerable target group of individuals, assisting them in developing greater resilience as they seek to become reintegrated into the workplace and society.

The famous Dutch burger of grazing cows, with melted cheese, lettuce, tomato, Kranenborg’s secret sauce and bacon from Brandt & Levie is our masterpiece. We also serve gourmet burgers with salmon, chicken, pulled pork, falafel and even hot dogs. All prepared in the Josper charcoal oven. The daily fresh-cut french fries, Agria potatoes will spoil everyone’s taste buds. And for the kids, we have three kinds of children’s mini-Thrillers, fries, fruit and ice cream for dessert.

Fresh, fast and delicious: no wonder the pizza al taglio has been Rome’s favourite quick bite for many years. Romans eat their al taglio anytime of the day, sharing with family and friends to get a taste of several flavours. SUGO in de Pijp serves 20 varieties every day with a lot of vegetarian and vegan options. Our dough is made with organic flour from wheat, spelt, sourdough and soya. It’s naturally leavened for 72 hours, resulting in an airy and easily digestible crust. We make everything fresh, including our pesto, tomato sauce and of course tiramisu. A little piece of Rome in Amsterdam. Also your spot for a real Italian coffee!

Vondelpark The most famous and largest city park in Amsterdam is the Vondelpark. Loved by all Amsterdammers, this park feels like their backyard. If you like to escape from the city, this is the place to go! The relaxed vibe makes the Vondelpark a really nice park to hangout. It is always full of people who are biking (of course), jogging, enjoying the sun and watching people while lazing in the grass, listening to (live!) music or walking their dog.

West Oud West is close to the city-centre and close to both Vondelpark and Rembrandtpark. Ten Katestraat market is an excellent outdoor market with its charming cross-street ‘Bellamystraat’ giving the area an old-fashion village vibe – complete with dance studio and blacksmith. Kinkerstraat is a multicultural area with a large shopping street lled with bars, restaurants, clothes etc. Two of the city’s more interesting alternative cultural complexes, OT301 and Lab111, which both mix music, lm and art, are located here. But for a real taste for the relaxed diversity of this neighbourhood, visit the sprawling terrace of Du Cap to truly witness all walks of life. And again: the whole city is pretty much nearby.
WTF? Where’s the food? Well, at the Foodhallen of course. Inspired by the ‘Torvehallerne’ in Copenhagen, ‘Mercado de San Miguel’ in Madrid and ‘Borough Market’ in London, the Foodhallen opened its doors in 2014 as the Dutch equivalent of these havens of flavour. A new trend took off in Amsterdam, leading into the opening of indoor markets across the country. The Foodhallen in the popular Amsterdam West district turned out to be more than just a fleeting trend. This icon of the Amsterdam culinary scene is the prime pit stop for local food lovers and those foodies on a city trip. From 'bitterbal' to G&T
A average afternoon at the Foodhallen: A most diverse mix of local and international city dwellers wander trough the large loft-like space
The Foodhallen of the Foodhallen devouring a fresh hand roll at ‘Meneer Temaki’ or ordering some typically Dutch ‘bitterballen’ with a twist to accompany a glass of beer. While burgers sizzle on the grill at ‘The Butcher’ stand, a bartender mixes a creative G&T with mango and red pepper, and the smell of traditional Indian street food drifts through the air from the kitchen of ‘SHIRKHAN’. All dishes come with a buzzing vibe on the side. A culinary speed date
The Foodhallen is the most iconic indoor food market in the Netherlands. Miniature foodies and selfproclaimed gastronomists enjoy great food side by side amicably during their scavengers hunt for the best bites in town. Seven days a week, the Foodhallen offers a chance to discover the very best of Amsterdam’s food scene under the same roof, through an ever-changing selection of 21 food stands. Dishes come in all mouthwatering shapes and flavours. While a stand like ‘Maza’ serves a hearty hummus dish, ‘Petit Gâteau’ indulges the sweet tooth with elegant mini tarts. The recently introduced Foodhallen pop-up stand is the ultimate culinary speed date; the stand in the corner of the food market houses a different food concept every three months.
18
A dessert of entertainment
The old tram depot, where the Foodhallen is situated in, has been completely renovated and converted into ‘De Hallen Amsterdam’. During the construction, a strong emphasis was put on preserving the historical elements, enhancing the industrial style, and adding space and light to the sight. A historic building transformed into a stylish work-play-eat spot, housing a cinema, hotel, library, crafts centre, and different culinary concepts. For that reason, it’s no surprise that a trip to the Foodhallen has more in store than just deliciousness. Every other weekend, the Local Goods Market sells unique products designed or created in Amsterdam in the corridor next to the food market. From clothing to furniture and books. And, for those who just can’t get enough of it, also more local foods like homemade sausages, home-brewed beer and chocolate. Reoccurring events like Tuesday Jazz Night, the Foodhallen Pub Quiz, and Foodhallen Extravagant Bingo offer an entertaining aperitif or dessert for the foodies visiting all the food stands. Eet smakelijk! Opening hours

Misc-store
The Jordaan is the most famous neigbourhood in Amsterdam. In the past it was a working-class area, but now it is home to many restaurants, art galleries and specialty shops. One of those restaurants is Noordwest that is located in the middle of the Jordaan and surrounded by historical architecture. The picturesque décor of the marketplace blends harmoniously with the modern design and tasteful interior of this restaurant. The name Noordwest was chosen, because there are two entrances: one overlooking the Noordermarkt and the other facing the Westerstraat. On sunny days both doors lead to their own terrace, where Noordwest will gladly serve refreshments and meals at your request.
A cool hangout that serves great Lobster, fish and for the not so fishy person mouthwatering hamburgers, also a big variety of finger foods to share with your friends with a nice local brewed
After launching Misc-store.com in 2010, the offline Misc-Store opened in Amsterdam in December 2013. As more and more people are (partially) working from home, there seems to be a growing appreciation for nice workspace environments and all the items within it that make it so: Refined goods for the home and desk.
Miscellaneous carries a carefully selected range of stationery, everyday carry, design objects and furniture to aid in finding the right work-life balance. Japanese makers are important to Miscellaneous and they carry brands such as Midori and Hightide, and the very exclusive Postalco, Roberu Leather Factory, Tajika and 1012Terra in their shop. For a cup of organic coffee, the restaurant opens at 11 o’clock in the morning. At lunch time they offer a choice of toasted sandwiches, buns with a wide range of fillings, fresh salads and delicious homemade soups. The diner menu is French orientated where they focus on seasonal an local products. The chef composes a diverse menu where the dishes change on a regular base. Early Saturday morning the ‘Boerenmarkt’ will burst into life at our doorstep. This market where in the old days local farmers used to sell their products, is nowadays well known throughout the country for its wide range of organic products. Monday you can wander around the ‘Lapjesmarkt’ right along the Westerstraat and around the Noordermarkt. This used to be a market for fabrics only, but now old furniture and trendy secondhand clothes have become popular merchandise as well. Are you in for a rest and a cup of coffee? Brigitta (owner): “In this time, we are much more conscious of what we do, what we like and why, and I feel it is important to dedicate attention to how and where we work, as it is such a big part of our daily life. I believe in the magic of the right tools for the right job. As such, the psychology behind a new and crisp notebook to start a new project is incredibly strong.”

DUTCH FOOD
DUTCH FOOD What should you eat when in Amsterdam? In the Netherlands we have a couple of snacks that you should try while you’re here
Bitterballen
Dutch Fries
Indonesian Rijsttafel
Delicious, deep fried crispy meatballs traditionally served with mustard for dipping the ultimate pub snack and found on the menu of most cafe’s and bars. You can also try it’s big brother the kroket which is found at snackbars all around town.
Everybody knows french fries, but they are nothing compared to our delicious dutch fries. If you ask for a patatje oorlog you’ll get them with peanut satay sauce, mayonnaise and onions or ask for a speciaal to replace the peanut sauce for ketchup/ curry.
Stroopwafels
Raw Herring
Two thin waffles suck together with a layer of sweet syrup. It’s even more delicious than it sounds. Either get warm ones from a street market vendor or warm them up by placing them over your coffee- or tea cup.
I’t might sound scary but you haven’t eaten a Dutch delicacy if you haven’t eaten raw herring. Herring karts are all over town and if you ask for a broodje haring you will get a sandwich with raw herring and, if you like the traditional pickles and onions
The strong Indonesian influence on Amsterdam’s food scene can be felt (and smelled, mmm) all over the city, and a no culinary tour of Holland would be fully complete without a visit to an Indonesian restaurant.Order a rijsttafel (rice table) for the true Indish-Dutch experience; a medley of small dishes from all over the Spice Islands, developed in the times of Dutch colonisation in order to allow colonials to sample dishes from around Indonesia.
Poffertjes/Dutch Pancakes Pronounced as po-fer-jus, these mini pancakes are absolutely delicious. Sprinkle them with butter and powdered sugar and enjoy this treat. You can also try the big brother, the dutch pancake and you can find them both in the numerous Pancake Houses across the city.

NIGHTLIFE
Nightlife Amsterdam has a reputation as a city to party and that’s well deserved. Besides clubbing and nightlife you have to visit a brown café which is the Dutch equivalent of an Irish pub. When you want to ask for a normal size beer you ask for a ‘vaasje’ you can also ask for a ‘fluitje’ if you want a smaller one. Brown café’s are also a good place to try some bitterballen. Nightlife concentrates itself on a couple of areas. You’ve got the famous Red Light District which is mostly for tourists, Rembrandt Square and Leidseplein. On the latter you find poptemples like Paradiso and the Melkweg. If you want to move your feet and dance the night away after a few beers, Amsterdam is the place to be. There is a thriving party scene with lot’s of clubs and a lot of festivals during the summer. Some of the great venues for electronic music are Club Air, De School, Radion, Disco Dolly, Club Up or the newest addition A’dam Toren, which not only houses a club but also a lookout platform, a hotel and a rotating restaurant. Nightlife concentrates itself on a couple of areas. You’ve got the famous Red Light District which is mostly for tourists, Rembrandt Square and Leidseplein. Melkweg Melkweg stands for pop culture in the most broad of senses. Each year, hundreds of concerts, club nights, films, theatre and expositions together attract more than 400,000 visitors. The venue is located in the only surviving factory building on the Amsterdam canal ring, a former milk factory. This historical building houses two concert halls, a cinema, a theatre, and an exposition space. In the Melkweg, established names can be seen alongside new talent and emerging styles get the chance to reach a broader audience. The diversity of its programming and visitors, together with its different spaces and special location, have for years made the Melkweg a unique place.
