Ps photo filter cartoon by shaira ong

The photo-to-cartoon effect is one of our favourite Photoshop effects, and it’s surprisingly easy to achieve. In this tutorial, we will show you how to turn photos to cartoons using an assortment of filters and simple brushwork.

8

step 1

Start by choosing a photo. This photo needs to have a well defined facial features, but not excessive contrast. Then, open it in Photoshop.

step 2

Duplicate your background layer by right clicking in the layers panel.

step 3

Navigate to Filters > Blur > Smart Blur. You can use these values or come up with your own, depending on how you want your image to shape up.

step 4

A quick levels adjustment (Ctrl + L) can help push contrast and make your image work better as a cartoon. Try these settings, or your own, as you see fit.

step 5

The image should have even skin tones and recognizable facial features.

step 6

Once your levels are finished, make a duplicate copy of that layer by right clicking and selecting “Duplicate.” Don’t copy your original background layer; instead, duplicate the layer you just ran filters on. In our example, it’s called “Background copy.” Select the new copy as shown.

step 7

Navigate to Filters > Sketch > Photocopy. (GIMP users also have a Photocopy filter, located under Filters > Artistic > Photocopy.) Adjust the detail and darkness sliders roughly as shown here, or to whatever values make your image look good.

step 8

One of the frustrating, weird quirks of the Photocopy filter in Photoshop is that it uses the colors you have active in your foreground/ background palette in your toolbox.

step 9

Providing you don’t run into trouble with the photocopy filter, you’ll end up with an image similar to this one. You may have to use the eraser or brush to clean up some of your skin or facial areas.

step 10

Select the topmost layer and set it to a blending mode of “Multiply.”

step 11

Navigate to Filter > Artistic > Cutout to use the cutout filter. Adjust the sliders as shown to get fairly good detail in your image, without it becoming too simple or losing color.

Ai simple landscape scene by shaira ong

This tutorial will teach you how to make a landscape scene in an easy to understand way using basic illustrator tools.

Step 1 Open the Adobe Illustrator and create a new document. Using a cool colour scheme perfectly matches our illustration. Using the Eyedropper tool, choose the lightest colour from the palette to create a large rectangle as the background to the illustration.

Step 2 Draw a rectangle and an oval to represent the foreground and a hill. Since both of the shapes are of the same color, they will seem to blend together. However, the vector shapes can always be individually selected and moved around.

Step 3 Draw another oval shape to represent the other hill. Repeatedly press the shortcut CMD+ or select the Send Background command from the right click menu until the shape is behind the lighter green objects but above the yellow background rectangle.

Step 4 Hold shift while drawing with the Ellipse tool to make it a perfect circle. Then use the Pen tool to draw a triangle. To adjust the shape, use the Direct Selection tool.

10

Step 5 Move the triangle shape on top of the circle to represent the trunk of a tree. Then, copy and paste a duplicate of the triangle and overlap the two shapes so they seem to blend.

Step 6 Hold Shift while selecting all the individual shapes that make up a complete tree. Afterwards, hold Alt while dragging them to one side to create duplicates.

Step 7 Go back and adjust the orientation of the tree branches to give each tree a unique appearance.

Step 8 Select the background rectangle and press CMD+C to Copy then CMD+F to paste in Front. Clear out the fill colour in the toolbar.

Step 9 Hold Shift and add the foreground rectangle and the two hills to the selection. Press the Crop button from the Pathfinder palette to trim these shapes to size.

Step 10

The cropping process will mess up the layering of the elements. Thus, use the CMD+[ shortcut to send the elements down the stack until the foreground elements are visible again.

Pr cinematic effect by Isabelle Obsuna

One of the popular effects people use in video editing is the Cinematic Effect. The effect is usually used to create old scenes, dramatic scenes and even romantic scenes. This tutorial will provide you a step by step process on how to convert your personal clip into a professional video.

step 1 Import your desired clip then drag it on the timeline found below

step 2 Proceed to the Effects panel on the lower left on the screen and type “Procamp

12

step 3 Select the Procamp option and you will see adjustment tools like Brightness, Contrast, Hue and Saturation. Decrease the brightness to -9 (numerical value may vary), increase the contrast to 115 and decrease the saturation to 75. There is no need to adjust the Hue since it only modifies the color and makes the video less cinematic.

step 4 Go back to the Effects Panel left and type Three Way Color Corrector. Click the option and three color wheels will be displayed. The first color wheel is for adjusting shadows, the second is for highlights and the third wheel is for the midtones. There are no specific values that you should select for each color wheel. You can toggle the color wheels to see what suits your video clip.

step 5

For the final step, you have to create a wide screen effect. In order to do so, type “Crop on the effects panel and click the option. You can crop the top, bottom, left or right side of the screen depending on your choice.

Feature of the month: Abbey Sy

“

I hope that through doing what I love turning words into beautiful art, it would inspire and motivate people to live by those words and reminders that I try to instill in my work. By: Isabelle Obsuna

Typography is emerging as a new could derive meaning from the letters way of self-expression nowadays. This art form entails the arrangement of different letters which evokes a message that transcends the appearance of the characters. It is rather a complicated medium to deal with since it does not appeal so much to a large audience. The challenge of typography is that it has to draw the attention of people through the use of text. Although it is a tedious process, mastering and promoting this art is no challenge for someone like Abbey Sy. She was a former Advertising Student at De La Salle University and a current Junior Digital Planner at Tribal Worldwide. Sy is notable for her lettering work ever since she was a college student. Her works usually are centered on quotations so that people

14

that she illustrates. People usually turn to blogging for marketing their own artistic works. Sy founded her own blog, artistic-dreams. com to shed light on her own craft. She created her blog during 2010 and was given recognition because of a sketch she made which was related to Owl City. By marveling at the number of likes her post received, she then decided that perhaps she should take blogging to a whole new level. In her blog, we get to see a glimpse of her personal life which is presented in an artistic approach. She pours out her musings on her adventures to different coffee shops, bookstores and even travels abroad.

Each experience that she shares to her readers is encapsulated in lettering. Her site also reveals others forms of art like photography and painting. Not only was the blog a perfect avenue for her to share her talent to the world but it was also a way to advocate the essence of Typography. “Typography or lettering is one of the many neglected art forms and I hope that through doing what I love - turning words into beautiful art, it would inspire and motivate people to live by those words and reminders that I try to instill in my work,” she said. From time to time, she would also work as a freelance artist and offers her expertise to various businesses. She has done lettering work for some shops like Quirks Novelties and Curiosities, Third Cup Café and Brooklyn’s. On the photography side, Abbey contributes her food shots to pepper. ph, a renowned food blog in the country. For Sy, the journey does not

end there. She plans to share her talent by conducting lettering workshops for people. “It’s not just about proving what you can do to others, it’s more on achieving that sense of fulfillment because you’re capable of doing something great and you allow people to learn from you,” she said. Sy enjoys offering lettering lessons since it is a perfect way for her to connect with different people out there and motivate them to develop an interest for Typography. She was successful with her first workshop last February entitled Love, Type wherein a small audience was gathered in Third Cup Café at Katipunan to learn about the fundamental techniques of lettering. Sy invites everyone to be a part of her next event this coming September. Another Love, Type workshop will be conducted and it is open for those who are interested in lettering. No experience required!

STUDENT MEDIA CONGRESS: EMPO by CARLO ANTONIO JAO Fresh from its fruitful success last year, De La Salle University Student Media Office had initiated once again the Student Media Congress (SMC) with the theme “Empowering Media Catalysts last July 25 and 26, 2014. In correspond to its theme, SMC aimed to empower every delegates to exceed their knowledge through reaching the full potential of each media outlet (print, radio, television, and internet). SMC was a 2-day event held by responsible and ethical media enthusiasts coming from both the academe and the industry. With their help, the said congress offered 10 competing and 40 non-competing workshops that guided each delegates to hone their skills. The event converged big names from well-known media organizations of different fields. For its first day of shaping and influencing student media catalysts, SMC had BBC World News Anchor Rico Hizon, The Philippine Star Lead Strategist Mick Atienza, Assistant Vice President (AVP) and Head for Digital Brand Management Carlos Mori Rodriguez, Manila Broadcasting AVP for Promo Santiago Elizalde, and Veteran Journalist Howie Severino. STUDENT DISCIPLINE FORMATION OFF A lot of students probably think the Student Discipline Formation Office (SDFO) is there to make their college life harder. In some ways, it is easy to understand why. If one changes their perspective to the “enforcer’s” view, it will lead to some surprising discoveries. Contrary to the popular opinion of most students, the Student Discipline Formation Office seeks to prevent rather than correct unseemly student behavior. The emphasis of the SDFO has always been on character formation. The university policies are not just converted and covertly forms of corporal punishment. They are lessons or guidelines that carry with them a value fit for every In Lasallian. There are certain policies that need to be brought up to light for one reason or the other. One of them just takes a hit on a good number of students. Another has rubbed certain students the wrong way. The last has become increasingly important thanks to current events.

1

I.D.

The first one of course is the I.D. related policy. The Student Handbook states that in Section 5.3.2.26, “Third and succeeding entry into campus without an ID in every academic year or on the cumulative 6th, 8th, 10th (and so on) instance in their entire stay in the University” is a minor

18

offense. Likewise, it is also stated in Section 5.3.2.27, “Fifth and succeeding loss of an ID in their entire stay in the University.” Usually, certain students complain that this policy is unfair because not only has one lost their I.D. for so many times, and paid the corresponding fees, one still gets a minor offense. One has to understand that the I.D. is one of the guarantees the University has in keeping campus security. Outsiders with certain intentions cannot just go in anytime they want. As a trade-off, the University wants to instill responsibility in every Lasallian that what they are carrying ensures a safe learning environment.

other words, rules are good.

2

Dress Code

Another policy is the Dress-code policy. The Student Handbook states in Section 5.3.2.28 that after the “[second] and succeeding violations of the Implementing Guidelines on the Dress Code Policy,” one will get a minor offense. The Implementing Guidelines have always been a sore spot for certain students. They believe that there should be a greater freedom in what a student can wear. After the numerous debates regarding this topic, it should be right that a proper dress code cannot really be pinned down on paper and

FICE: A Reintroduction

This is why there are dozens of recognized organizations that the University hosts; each one of them catering to a particular student’s need. measured. The University sees the institution as a training ground for future corporate life. As such, many corporations or organizations have some sort of dress code policy. At this point, the importance being placed here is on discipline even if one does not end up on such a track.

3

Unrecognized Organizations

The last policy is on joining Unrecognized Organizations. This is categorized as a major offense in the University, and it states in Section 5.3.1.22: “Hazing or physical injuries committed as a result of an initiation rite or practice as a pre-requisite for admission into a membership in a fraternity, sorority, or organization by placing the recruit neophyte or applicant in some embarrassing or

humiliating situations, such as forcing him to do menial, silly, foolish, and similar tasks or activities or otherwise subjecting him to physical or psychological suffering or injury (Republic Act No, 8049). [...]” The University recognizes the need for students to organize among themselves. This is why there are dozens of recognized organizations that the University hosts. Thus, each one of them caters the particular needs of the students. The University also wants to keep the campus environment safe and friendly as much as possible. With the threats of organizations that seek to inflict harm, it implements such a policy to safeguard student’s interests. If one stops to think that these policies are not restrictions, then the students can stop thinking the Student Discipline Formation Office as “enforcers”, but as “formators”, which the SDFO has always been trying to push for.

The emphasis of the SDFO has always been on character formation. The university policies are not just converted and covertly forms of corporal punishment. They are lessons or guidelines that carry with them a value fit for every Lasallian. 19

a creative first impression by Rosabel Ang

Robby Leonardi created a side-scrolling interactive web resume that will get you hooked

In almost all job opportunities, employers will be asking for a resume. At times they ask for a cover letter, or even a portfolio but more often than not, the page they will really be looking at is your resume. They tell you to stand out in your cover letters, but why stop there? As a few of you are about to embark on a new journey in life, you will be submitting resumes everywhere you go. Whether it is just a few select achievements or an accomplishment in your college or professional career, your resume can stand out in many ways.

In Visual Design Your traditional resume will come in black and white unless your employer is asking for a picture. For some of you, changing the font, bolding some lines, and aligning the text is already enough “design. Not to say there’s anything worng with minimalist, but you are going to need some major skills. Company recruiters go through hundreds of resumes at any given time, so in a half-second glance, your resume must make an impact. Making a more visually-pleasing resume will not hurt anyone but yourself, so take some time to work

20

out those Photoshop muscles you might be hiding. There is no need for a fullycolored infographic about your accomplishments, but actually considering how your information is displayed is just as important as deciding which information you should display.

In Product Design Design does not just mean Photoshop here and there. In fact, your resume does not have to stay on paper. Omondo Abudho, a Kenyan art director and photographer, printed his resume but he did not

stop there. He designed his resumes to be able to fold into a box, complete with a “nutrition facts”-like format of his skills. Love stitching and sewing? Show your employers how passionate you can get by creating a fabric resume just like graphic designer Melissa Washin. Is your love for chocolate indescribable? A pretty candy bar resume from Reddit user Nicholas landed him a pretty sweet job at his company of choice. You may think of these methods as a waste of time and resources, but showing a potential employer how far you are willing to go will always leave an impression. Productions for these items are admittedly more costly, and mostly apply to more “creative” careers such as advertising and marketing, but these factors shouldn’t hinder you from showing what you’ve got.

In Web Design People have been bringing their work to the internet since the marquee HTML tag was created. There has been a boom in the tech industry, and employers are hounding for the kids who know more than one language— programming languages, that is. You do not have to get into the complexities of creating a 3D Xbox game, but the web is the current “in” thing, and it will be for quite some time. Brush up on those HTML tags you had to memorize in high school computer class and start creating your own website. Robby Leonardi

created a side-scrolling interactive web resume that will get you hooked. All this programming may seem daunting, but there are numerous platforms out there that can get you started, such as blogging platform Tumblr, or DIY no-code-required services such as Wix. Some are free, some are paid, but they are all guaranteed to make your internet life a little bit easier. Picking a template is an easy route out, but will that really show your creativity when your website looks like numerous others? Always try to customize, but never plagiarize.

Sky’s The Limit If you thought YouTube was a fine way to show yourself in motion, you can probably do it in just six seconds. You know what else comes in six seconds? That’s rigvht, your favorite Vines! Dawn Stiff, an aspiring journalist, convinced her employers to hire her with a six second clip of herself. Be open. There are many ways to be different, and don’t be afraid to test those boundaries. People push the limits of their creativity every day. However, in any situation, there is always a proper and improper way of doing a task. You need to ask yourself if the company you are applying for will be open-minded to your ideas, so always have a back-up of your hardcopy resumes. But this does not mean you get to skimp on its design. Get out there and work on it!

dlsu ovpea: 12 hour famine

DLSU OVPEA 12 HOUR FAMINE At any given time, in every part of the world, an ever-growing threat shakes the world no matter where they may be. Government officials and several organizations do their best to help fight the battle of world hunger. As of 2013, 870 million people around the world do not have anything to eat and 3.3 million of them are our fellow countrymen. Unfortunately, over the years the numbers of people who face hunger keeps on growing. With this, De La Salle University along with World Vision is proud to present the 2014 12-Hour Famine project.

22

This project will focus on creating awareness among society about hunger. This activity aims to enlighten the students and staff about these pressing issues of our community and through this we aim to redefine the Animo spirit of each member of the Lasallian Community. Not only do we intend to create awareness about our cause but we also intend to lend a helping hand to our fellow brothers and sisters who are facing this problem daily. Through the values taught and shown to us in the very foundation of our proud university, we aim to make this a start of our battle with world hunger.
