There is a saying that procrastination is the thief of time and I know we are all guilty of it in one way or another; be it in our personalorprofessionallives."Why didIwaituntilnowtocompletethis task?WhydidIwaitsolongtostart exercising?WhydidIwaituntilnow to start saving?" Why, Why, Why, Why?

According to David Finkel, in his article "The Root Cause of Procrastination," for Inc. Magazine, he cited three (3) reasons why we procrastinate - Fear, Old Habits, and Perfectionism. But, before we get into that, let's first define procrastination.

According to the Oxford dictionary, "procrastination is the action of delaying or postponingsomething."

"Procrastination is the thief of time."
~Edward Young

WHY DO WE WHY DO WE PROCRASTINATE? PROCRASTINATE?

1. FEAR

Fear is one of our biggest "lifestallers" as I call it. It feeds stagnation, creates doubt, and arrests us in our own "self-made prison." We ask ourselves repeated "what-if" questions, which further prevents us from achieving our goals or going after our dreams.

Fear stops us from living our best lives and taking advantage of opportunities. But, what if we were to start thinking about fear in a different way? According to David Finkel, "once you start thinking about fear differently, it becomes a learning opportunity." My new thinking is this, if I allow fear to constantly rule my life I'm going to be left with more what-if questions than before, and, at the end of the day, I'm going to blame myself for having not tried. So, the very least I can do for myself is to try - go after those dreams I have. And do so while still feeling the fear, knowing that even if I fail, I would have learnt something.

HABITS

There are two sayings that come to mind when I hear "old habits." One is, "old habits die hard" and the other is, "but that's how we've always done it." Coupled with fear and the notion of change, old habits can be a bit difficult to change. It requires us to be truly open and honest with ourselves; something that scares many of us because the truth can sometimes hurt.

TIP: TIP:

Next to fear, I believe this one rings very true for me. Many times I want it to be "perfect" before I put it out there; fearful that if it's not perfect it may be a sign of failure. But the one thing we need to wrap our minds around is this - nothing in this life is perfect! And, if we keep using this as an excuse, we will NEVER do anything, because it will never be perfect enough.

PROGRESS TRUMPS PERFECTION.

Proactively seek to find out why you procrastinate, Proactively seek to find out why you procrastinate, then take steps to correct it. then take steps to correct it.

WAYS TO STOP/LIMIT PROCRASTINATING WAYS TO STOP/LIMIT PROCRASTINATING

In his article, "Procrastination:AScientificGuideonHowtoStopProcrastinating," James Clear, author of Atomic Habits, highlights four (4) ways in which we can stop/limit procrastinating.

James Clear alludes to a basic format, "onlydo[THINGYOULOVE]whiledoing[THING YOU PROCRASTINATE ON]." For example, listen to that bombshell playlist (that always getsyougrooving)whileexercising.

Don't let procrastination steal your happiness, dreams, or goals today. Recognize that you are procrastinating and why you may be procrastinating. Then, do one tiny thing to break the cycle of procrastination and keep chipping away at it daily. Whether you win or lose, know that there is always a lesson. Take that lesson and make your next attempt or your next chapter even better.

3. Learn to Breathe

I'm sure you're saying, "but I breathe constantly, otherwise, I'd be dead." True. But taking a few minutes to just sit still and breathe deeply has profound effects. It clears your mind, reduces stress, lowers your heart rate and blood pressure, and it induces tranquility. Try it!

4. Declutter Your Spaces

All your spaces should be as clutter-free as is humanly possible. That includes your workspace, car, closet, etc. And, if you have not used it in a year, hiding it in a box somewhere is not going to make you use it any faster. Donate or sell it. Cluttered spaces lead to cluttered minds.

5. Limit Social Media

10 Essentials ToHave This Summer

Summer is upon us which usually meanswestartpullingoutourbeach wear, sunscreen, suitcases and flip flops. And, if you are in Jamaica, you can certainly agree that it's HOT! Nevertheless, summer is all about beaches, pools, rivers, relaxing, and generallyjusthavingfun.

But, we should do so responsibly because the pandemic is not over and we want everyone to have fun while remaining safe and healthy. Good news is, there's always a way to navigate rough waters - ask a sailor - while still having some fun and relaxation, and most importantly, stayingsafeandCOVID-19free.

Anyway, here are a few summer essentials that you should have ready andwaitingtohittheroad.Thesearemy top 10 basic summer essentials for any summersurvival.

What are your plans for this summer? Pool or boat parties, beach lounges, river frolicking, fishing, backyardBBQ's,rumparties, orsitehopping?

People, really, this is a no-brainer. It'sjustamusthave! Whyyoumay ask? Because it protects your skin from the sun's harmful ultraviolet radiation (UVA & UVB). Make sure your sunscreen has SPF 15 or higher. You can pick these up at yourlocalpharmacyorsupermarket, ororderthemonline.

Folks, it's hot, may get even unbearably hotter. You don't want to be walking around with your clothes sticking to you like a glue trap. You aren't a mouse, fly, or some other undesirable thing. You are cute, sexy and fabulous. Represent! Of course, the exception to this rule is the good old jeans and short shorts... must-haves, with that white tee. Gentlemen, you are not forgotten, buttruthbetold, yougetawaywith almost anything you wear; so just do you and look good while doing it.

Whether it's a bikini, a tankini, or shorts, it doesn't matter; whatever floats your boat, or better yet, whatever rocks your body. Just looksexy.Afterall,IT'SSUMMER!

Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under trees on a summer’s day, listening to the murmur of the water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is by no means a waste of time.

Besides being stylish, hats are quite protective. They help to ward off the sun's harmful rays and protect your eyes, hair and skin. Did you know that constant squinting of the eyes can cause you to have more wrinkles around the eyes? Yup. So, wear those hatsandsunglassestoreducethe squint.

Finding Yourself: Through Repeated Losses & Curiosity

Having never been a guest on a podcast before I became me and started to ask a myriad of questions. How would it work and what kind of questionsI'dbeasked.AndIan,being the consummate host, obliged and sent me a few questions which eased my anxiety. Suffice it to say, in the end, we veered off topic during the interview, had a beautiful conversation, andIneverdied. Listen to the podcast here. My voice is not hardontheears, soyou'llbefine.

Thethemeforthedayis“finding yourselfthroughrepeatedlosses andcuriosity”

–whatdoesthatmean?

Oprah Winfrey once said, "we can't become what we need to be by remaining what we are" and that is so true.

A few messages, and months later, I finally agreed to have a sit down with long-timehighschoolfriend,Ian,as a guest on his podcast, the English CoachPodcast

On the day I agreed and provided a topic, I didn't realize that I had this verytopicnotedinmy"things to write about"twoyearsprior. Nothing beats therighttime!

Let’s start by my saying that “finding yourself" looks different foreveryone.Youcanspendyears, a lifetime even, trying to figure out who you are; while for some, they figure it out in an instant. Finding yourself can also mean feeling at peace with the person you've become and accepting your feelings and thoughts for what theyare.

Finding yourself requires time, patience and grace.
