Choices. Everyday we’re forced to make choices that will take us to different paths of our lives. As I’m making this magazine, or writing this, I am in the tour van, driving to Salt Lake City for a show tonight. I remember around 3 years ago I had to make this choice, to make music overseas or stay where I am, and continue building a career at home. Usually when I have to make decisions like this, I would rather just stay where I am, focus on what I got and live a comfortable life. But there’s also that 14 year old inside of me who always wanted to know what touring was like, performing in different cities every night, being on stage holding the guitar.. I was curious. So I chose to get on that flight to L.A and make an album, go on tours and perform hundreds of shows. It is not easy. Certain things I had to sacrifice -the comfort of being with my family and friends, a long distance relationship, money, change of diet (having to part with the ‘nasi campur’ I religiously have been eating all my life), but Alhamdulillah, with guidance I’m able to live out here and do what I love doing, making music and be my own person. In this issue I’m excited to share our new collection, I’ve been obsessing about this season’s current craze - studs and spikes so you’ll be seeing a lot of our shirts spiked out this time. But I’m also excited about sharing all the things (or people!) that I’ve encountered during the whole year of 2012. Thank you so much for your support and much love. x Yuna

1. Do you know what your name means? Wiki says GUBA stands for “good, ugly, bad, awesome” and that (amongst other things) pretty much sums up what I’m all about. But yeah Guba is a nickname given by my brother in law as a joke. The thing about nicknames is that they sticks. But I’m cool with it. So when people ask me what it means I’ll just say it’s a nickname. 2. Tell us 5 things that makes you get out of bed in the morning. Full bladder, work, phone, music & telly. 3. The first album you bought when you were young. Oasis (What’s The Story) Morning Glory.
GUB A
Meet Gabriel Robert Rawantas, a Sabahan singer-songwriter who has been singing his own compositions for the past 13 years; albeit only to himself, in private - until now. Fondly known as ‘Guba’, he describes his music as alternative-folk. After accepting a job offer in Kuala Lumpur he flew in to the capital city and discovered Greenhouse Studio in Ampang instead, where he took the songs he had penned to be recorded. We asked Guba about his latest album ‘Hilang’ and more!
4. Your debut album is just out, what was the inspiration writing this album? The inspiration would be from the thought of “Hey, let’s put together an album?” because “Hilang” is more of a compilation of songs that we’ve (Jeff & I) selected from my personal archive to be put together as an album. Being new is not an excuse but that’s exactly why we just picked some from the list and try to blend them all together. Unlike writing solely for a themed album. Say.. A “War” theme for instance, so everything should be circling around the idea of “War” itself. The album title/cover, the music, the lyrics, the instruments etc. That’s what I would like to try in the future release. To be able to channel every energy for a specific matter. Perhaps for the next album? :) 5. How would you describe your sound? A cross between Rufus Wainwright and Foo Fighters.
6. What’s your favourite track from your album, and why? ‘’Aku Pergi” because it’s a poem before it’s a song. Poem first then the melody. I didn’t want to write just another Malay single so I imagined myself as a forelimbs-webbed-wings bat. Writing my experience as a bat for one night. 7. You collaborated with different artists and producers for this album, tell us what was it like working with Diana Danielle, Yuna and Duan from Seven Collared Tshirt? It’s an honour, really. Coming from me who’s still “Mr. Nobody” in the industry and for them to even have the tiniest, slightest thing to do with my music is a home-run for me. Let alone for them to sing/arrange my songs. I’m blessed! With Yuna, it’s effortless. Especially when I asked if she wanted to change some parts of the song and she’d rather keep it as it is. That and the fact that she’s a brilliant singer and a voice to die for. With Danielle, it’s more of an experiment for me. Since we’re both new in the music industry, I wanted to bring something rather fresh to the table, play around with the 3/4, waltzy kinda stuff. Same goes with the lyrics. Duan is really something. It’s probably because of the fact that he’s been doing the music stuff more than a decade ahead of me. He sees music way deeper than everyone else. More profound. 8. You’re very stylish. Tell us what’s your personal style and what do you like. I’m more of a ‘tshirt & jeans’ kinda guy. But I like to mix & match too. If I get bored wearing a hoodie, I’ll wear a sleeveless denim jacket over it. If black is worn more than twice the same week, I’ll throw in some solid colors for a change. Then again it’s where I’m wearing them to is what’s important. Not too crazy for people to subliminally subjected me to anything, not too sharp it cuts through lenses either. Sometimes flukes brings the best of you too. You were like picking random clothes and when you put them on.. BAM! You’re Marc Jacobs! Lol I’d pick and lay down what I wanna wear rather than trying 20,000 outfits for an event 9. One favourite clothing item you can’t live without. My black high cut leather Converse! :P

For a long time, the Malaysian indie scene has been the key to exposing some of Malaysia’s brightest talents. Although this movement have been quite slow in the past couple of years, Ahmad Faris has found a way to promote, celebrate and showcase the best in young Malaysian creative talents through his online channel TAPAU TV. a free online tv station which aims to represent the youths of the nation through its own brand of ‘empowering entertainment’ focusing on the balance of substance and style.
3.The local indie scene was massive about 5 or 6 years ago and the ‘’DIY’ spirit was embraced by every kid in Malaysia. Do you feel TAPAU TV can bring back that energy and sustain it? The ‘DIY’ or ‘indie’ spirit has never died. It’s alive and around. Just look at how far we’ve come for the past 5 years. Our musicians are now breaking through the international market, there’s a new wave of amazing local clothing brands taking over, more and more we are seeing amazing creative small businesses (cafes and such) owned by people our age and trust me there’s a lot more going on, some I dont even know about. The only problem is that none of this is getting the exposure and credit that it deserves. That’s why its important for TAPAUtv to be around so that we know what’s going on in our scene and continue giving it the push and support that it needs and deserves. Because if we don’t, then it will only be a phase that will soon die out just like a trend.
4. Did you just wake up one day thinking ‘Hey I’m gonna start an online channel today’. What triggered this idea? Hahaha, no. It definitely didnt just happen randomly one day. It took us quite a while, a lot of observations, some 1. How did the name TAPAU come about? heavy frustrations and a couple of lessons learnt before we finally woke up and decided that we absolutely needed and TAPAU is a word used on the streets of Malaysia to ‘take-away’ food and had to do this. The seed was probably planted 3 years ago, when I thought there’s really nothing great or interesting on such and we thought it fitted our perfectly with our brand identity and TV anymore and decided to take a dive, quit my day job to produce my own content with the mission of getting it on mission as a Malaysian online TV that aims to capture and represent the tv. I never managed to get the show on TV. It took me 2 frustrating years of struggle to finally figure out and underyouth of the nation. stand how the industry works but during those two amazing years too, I also became friends with some of the most amazing people I’ve ever met and produced some of my best works to date. TV? 5. What do you want people to feel everytime after watching a good episode / show on Tapau TV? Definitely! I think for a while now, we’ve been trying to find an alternative I hope that they’re as amazed as I am with how awesome some of our kids are and I want them to be inspired to just to the traditional mainstream media that somehow feels irrelevant to us go out and do stuff and follow their passion. anymore. I wouldnt say guerilla, but we try our best to bring something much more raw and real to the table. No more superficial contents that 6. PRABAL GURUNG
We are obsessed with Nepalese fashion designer Prabal Gurung’s collection. Although his fall 2012 collection in a show called “Uncursed” was presented nearly 10 months ago at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, we are still very much in love with all the 42 looks. They were a play on heaven and hell with dark blue and deep black pieces starting the lineup and ones in ethereal gold and white closing it. But while shiny fabrics and sequins throughout epitomized the glamor that Mr. Gurung has become known for, the overall theme wasn’t as feminine as his past collections. We love you Prabal! And we can’t wait to see what you have in store for us in 2013!
