As we close out this year I am reminded of the scripture in Deuteronomy 31:8 which tells us that God will never leave nor forsake us. We are about to enter into a new year and as uncertain as we are about what to expect in the new year, we can count on the fact that God will always be there.

How can we ensure that we no longer relive the past? Every year the new year resolutions flood our timelines and by week two of the first month of the new year, many have reverted to where they were before. Here's a suggestion, discover your purpose. Purpose is an anchor. It doesn't matter how you try to run away from it, it continues to show up and it does this until you accept the mission. Many of the new year's resolutions we made failed because they were not connected to our purpose.

This new year I urge you to discover your purpose. The best way to discover the purpose of a thing is to go to its manufacturer. God is always available to answer our questions start there. Once you've found out why you exist follow the path God illuminates to you to see it manifest. This is where you find true fulfillment. This is where you find prosperity. This is where you find peace. We have done it our way for so long, its truly time to do it God's way.

I can't wait to see all that you'll accomplish!

T’MIL CURTIS: A QUEEN THRIVING WHILE PUSHING THROUGH PAIN

Now and then, an extraordinary person rises to the occasion and shakes up the status quo. C-Suite Solutionists T’Mil Curtis is that woman. An innovator who leads to the beat of her own drum and is always ten steps ahead has faced many hurdles in life. One challenge she’s handling gracefully is chronic pain. To be exact, trigeminal neuralgia (TN). A sudden, severe facial pain often described as a sharp shooting pain or electric shock in the jaw, teeth, or gums. According to the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, 150,000 people are diagnosed with trigeminal neuralgia every year. The pain happens in short, unpredictable attacks and can last for days, weeks, or months at a time. However, it’s possible for the pain to improve or even disappear altogether for several months or years at a time known as a period of remission.

Curtis has never met a challenge she couldn’t handle. So, when Houston, Texas-based VGNBAE Music Group— a multi-genre label and the brainchild of two multi-talented creatives, Anthony Hall, and Dominique Side— approached her to become the general manager of their label and multi-media complex, she was up for the task.

Granted, she had to make room on her plate as if her skill set wasn’t complete enough already — a wellrounded expert in the areas of marketing, coaching, ministry, public speaking, event production, and promotion—who has achieved a high level of success within her respective fields.

The invitation was too enticing to turn down. Her hyper-creative personality and the desire and skills to play in multiple creative sandboxes kicked in.

PG.19

“E.E. Cummings once said, ‘it takes courage to grow up and become who you really are,’ says Curtis. “Accepting the role as general manager allows me the space to show how someone who grew up in and around the music industry, can marry experience with innovation.”

An assignment that aligns with her skills, Curtis will manage and oversee the growth and developing structure of the label and will assume responsibilities on January 2, 2023.

“I’ve always had a desire to help artists and producers, so every step I’ve taken throughout my career feels right.”

Curtis has achieved success and gained a following in multiple fields based on her platform, advice, and leadership skills. You may wonder how she’s functioned so long with TN. It wasn’t always like this. Her doctor diagnosed her with the disease 14 years ago while working her dream job. It became clear that a pivot was needed if she would survive. But pivots can suffer drawbacks if they’re not correctly mastered. Determined to get her life back, with much prayer and creative wheels spinning, she accepted this life-hiccup—what some would call a “setback”—as a blessing and seized the opportunity to launch her entrepreneurial journey.

PG.20
T'MIL CURTIS PHOTO CREDITS: Ja’Qualen Wells

“This forced me to become an entrepreneur in order to have some kind of life,” she explains. “Some years, I barely pulled it off while other times, I lost everything.”

Throughout her journey, she has put in the time, developed the expertise, and earned the experience to be a creative thought leader who offers knowledge to help others achieve beyond their limits. However, when TN rears its ugly head, all bets are off. She has no choice but to shut everything down. Giving her time to rest and refuel. “Being misunderstood and mislabeled was the biggest part of mental challenges and dealing with the ‘suicide disease’ only adds stress. I knew people looked at me as if I was lazy when the reality was, I was in pain and couldn’t function,” she explains.

TN is often called the “suicide disease” because of the intense pain, higher rates of suicidal ideation in patients with severe migraines, and links to higher rates of depression, anxiety, and sleep disorders.

In recent studies, scientists found that women are more likely to suffer from chronic pain–70% of people with chronic pain issues are women–but they also feel pain more often, for longer periods, in more areas, and even more intensely.

“A seasoned C-Suite Solutionist to the core, Curtis has yet to rise to the heights of her profession. However, she says it doesn’t matter what room her gifts make for her because the title that brings her the most honor is ‘servant’.

“At the heart of every endeavor is the desire to serve and see people win!”

An advocate for education and a recipient of a dual master’s degree in Education and Pastoral Counseling, Curtis is a trigeminal neuralgia warrior and an advocate for educating others about chronic pain disease.

“Having trigeminal neuralgia doesn’t mean that you’re destined to a life of pain.” She teaches and speaks about trigeminal neuralgia and symptoms so that others will know if what to look for and if they should see a doctor. Symptoms include one or more of these patterns:

Episodes of severe, shooting or jabbing pain that may feel like an electric shock

· Spontaneous attacks of pain or attacks triggered by things such as touching the face, chewing, speaking, or brushing teeth

· Attacks of pain lasting from a few seconds to several minutes

· Pain that occurs with facial spasms

PG.21

Bouts of multiple attacks lasting days, weeks, months or longer — some people have periods when they experience no pain

· Pain in areas supplied by the trigeminal nerve, including the cheek, jaw, teeth, gums, lips, or less often the eye and forehead

· Pain affecting one side of the face at a time

· Pain focused in one spot or spread in a wider pattern

· Pain rarely occurs at night while sleeping

· Attacks that become more frequent and intense over time

Curtis says, “If you experience facial pain, mostly continued or repeated pain, or pain unrelieved by over-the-counter pain relievers, see your doctor.” Aside from the business and ministry roles, she is a simple, yet complexed personality. She loves everything pink, makeup and stilettos, and everything else about being a woman. She is a proud nerd, an unapologetic lover of all genres of music from classical, to jazz, to gospel, to country. The path to enduring success is rarely a straight line and the concept of living well while living with chronic pain sounds impossible. However, Curtis is proof that you can thrive despite chronic pain. She is intentional about living well with chronic pain. And realizes it is about managing pain and finding ways to live a happy, fulfilled life despite symptoms. All while wearing stilettos! She will continue to thrive, grow, and make her way in the world. If you ever feel discouraged or need inspiration, just look to T’Mil Curtis who has creatively carved out a place for herself.

She can be quoted saying, “No one has the right to tell you that you’re not important, that you’re not valuable, to tell you who you are, to give you a name, to give you a label that’s less than what God has intended for you to have.”

PG.29

amazing Queen.

IAQ: I have always believed that the things you liked doing as a child were indicators that directed you to purpose. What are your thoughts on that theory and how can people discover what they were born to do?

Chanell: I believe this is true because as a child, I always saw myself as a teacher and loved showing others how to do things. At times, I would even show my peers how to understand the math problems when the teacher couldn’t explain it to them. But concerning finding one’s purpose, the first step in discovering your purpose is going after the very thing you see yourself doing in your heart. Discovering your purpose is an investment and it means you will have to invest time and sometimes money to learn all you can about what you want to do. For me, that was how I became a teacher. However, getting to my purpose wasn’t easy. I had to put in work. I had to fail at some things in order to take my purpose more seriously. There was even a time when I was going to give up on being a teacher and consider another career path. But God, through the poverty and suffering I endured in the process, somehow orchestrated my feet to walk through the door of my classroom seamlessly. I mean, the principal of a school that I didn’t know existed called me with a job offer before I graduated college!

PG.30

Chanell: If you don’t know who you are, then other people will tell you what they think you are and try to make you into what they want you to be. Most likely, their assessment of who are won’t be positive. For a long time, I hated how I look because I believed I was ugly. I use to try so hard to be beautiful but I couldn’t see past what I thought was ugly because some in my family criticized my appearance while kids at school did the same. Needless to say, I didn’t think much of myself during my young adult years. So you have to stop waiting for people to tell you that you’re beautiful, smart, and kind and just be that person. When I started believing those things about myself, compliments began pouring in out of nowhere. People randomly of different ages, races, and backgrounds approach me and compliment my beauty. Stay away from anyone, I mean anyone, that tells you differently. One quote I live by is, “I don’t want to be likable at the expense of my dignity”. That means I will walk away from anyone who attempts to belittle me.

IAQ: Tell us about a time in your life when you didn't know who you are and how you were able to navigate through that time.

After my greatgrandmother passed away, the family changed. I started to see how people really felt about me as a child after this loss. It was like no one cared for one another anymore. When this was happening, I was beginning to enter my teenage years which is a time of “identity versus inferiority” according to a stage in Erickson’s Theory. This mean that a person in their adolescent years will either discover and embrace who they truly are or struggle with their identity which described me as a teen. The ridiculing of my looks and intellect grew worse. So while my self-esteem and confidence was low, I focused on the things I could control like excelling in my academics, preparing for college, and strengthening my gifts and talents.

IAQ: Why do you believe knowing who you are is important?
PG.31

system?

Chanell: Having a strong support system is very important because if you have the wrong person or people on your team, the goal, purpose, or vision can be delayed or hindered. Surround yourself with only those that care to see you succeed. If you have no support system available, then you have to do what King David did and encourage yourself in the Lord.

IAQ: Have we lost our way as women, our values?

Chanell: We lose our way when we accept less than what we deserve to keep undeserving people in our lives. At times I was called trifling, crazy, and fat, among other hurtful names as a child. I grew up lacking confidence, social skills, and self-worth because I grew up in a dysfunctional environment. This led to me settling for disrespect in relationships because I thought I had to be okay with keeping my mouth shut about things that my partners did to hurt me. I thought this was how I had to keep the relationship in but I was seriously mistaken. So I believed the toxic labels about me until I was able to learn better. However, there’s only one way back to the God-ordained woman and that’s through believing what the Bible says about us and carrying ourselves as such. For me, that means walking away from people that don’t appreciate my presence by stealing my peace and joy.

PG.32

IAQ: Tell us about a time in your life when you thought God had forsaken you and how you got through that.

Chanell: There was a time I was trying to save a dead relationship. I did everything thing I could to be a good woman to the person I was dealing with. But no matter how hard I tried, how hard I prayed, how hard I fasted, I couldn’t save that relationship. I was hurt and upset at all my efforts to save the relationship and how God didn’t change his heart to keep him from being unfaithful to me. Years later, I realize that the person was truly sent on assignment from satan to destroy me. So I kept that person out of my life and my path became clear and purpose so evident. Had I not gotten rid of that person when I did, I probably would have never become the first Miss I AM H.E.R. International and challenged myself to become a pageant queen. This wasn’t the only time in my life I felt forsaken by God. But what helped me to get through those situations was having Christian leaders, which are representations of God’s provision, to pray for me and just listen to what I was going through.

IAQ: What is your favorite scripture and why?

Chanell: My favorite Scripture is Psalm 139:14 because it tells me that I’m “fearfully and wonderfully” made. To me, it validates who I am concerning my purpose and existence. It lets me know that I am beautiful just the way God designed me to be.

PG.32

But you got to remain diligent in your work efforts because when it’s all said and done after you’ve put in work and done all you could, then you will definitely see a reward. Discovering Faith, True Beauty & Confidence During and After Cancer

Without question, when going through a serious illness, you learn to know what faith truly is and find the true meaning of beauty and how you really feel about yourself I know this all too well because I have experienced many trials and tribulations in my life. Through it all, I gained strength that I never knew I had, and much more confidence in myself, which led me to love myself all over again. I had a new beginning, all on my own.

After going through so much in my life, things were going well, until it happened. I had a head-on collision with not only breast cancer, but colon cancer as well, and it changed my entire outlook on life. I thought I had endured rough years before but going through cancer was the rest of the iceberg. There is nothing like it. You wonder, what in life had you done so wrong to have this placed upon you. You began asking, why me. Yet through my tragedies and all that I had to endure, it all became an awakening for me, in which I received and gain all the strength and encouragement I needed to conquer. Through it all, not only did I find the true meaning of life, I found the true meaning of beauty. Through all the chemo, radiation, the pain I endured, I still felt beautiful. I found myself looking in the mirror even more during this time because I thought what I was dealing with would change me drastically, but as I viewed the imperfections I now have to live with, over time it got better, and instead of feeling sorry for myself, I embrace it all; I'm still among the living, who am I to complain.

Whether we are dealing with an illness or any other negative feelings about ourselves, our lives, and our bodies, we need to be our on-cheering section. Through all my mishaps, I still feel beautiful, and it is real. I have come to realize that even going through such a dark time in my life, I still have a life to be lived, and I am going to live it to the fullest. When I think about the individuals that are no longer among us due to such a horrific disease, I'm truly grateful, and I will no longer take my life for granted, life is precious, and we don't realize that until we come close to losing it. When I think of the “gift of life” that was given to me twice over, I knew I did not have a moment to waste. I would never say having or going through cancer is a gift, surviving it, and receiving a second and third chance at life, is the gift. Yet, through it all, I did not allow the disease to take away who I am, or what I stand for. I am a survivor, as well as an example to show that it can happen and that I can go on and look and feel just as beautiful, inside, and out, and it shines brighter.

PG.36

Yet through my tragedies and all that I had to endure, I received and gain all the strength and encouragement I needed to conquer. I will say that the areas of my body that were interrupted, will be a constant reminder I had cancer, and at times, it does bother me, I'm human, but within a moment or two, I look past it, because those areas could be covered up. True beauty is within and when you feel beautiful on the inside, it shows so clearly on the outside. Just because I had cancer, does not mean cancer had me. We as women should never allow anything, or any circumstance to steal our joy or our self-esteem. And I know with cancer, many times you are too weak to even think about your looks because you're not always feeling your best, believe me, I know; but sometimes you must try a little bit, and fight past it and keep living. Through any tragedy, we are and always will be beautiful and unique! Women, we all know that our bodies take lickings, yet we keep on ticking.

When I look back now and see how far I've come, I have to say, I thought right away that my cancer diagnoses were truly a death sentence because you're not sure if you're going to make it or not. Cancer has taught me not to blink twice at life, my eyes are wide open, living life to the fullest. I also realized after surviving cancer both times, that I was about to face new beginnings, new hope, do and see more with a whole new perspective on life. I share my story with others hoping to make a positive impact on someone who is ill or otherwise so that they can proceed with life in a whole new way. I am 63yrs of age now, and I am cherishing each day, each moment, and through it all, I feel that I am still at my best. I am confident with myself, as well as grateful. I am starting over, doing things I should have done before the cancer.

PG.37

One day, after one of the many surgeries I had during my breast cancer period, and I could remember it as if it was yesterday, I experienced something so real, so peaceful, something of a miracle, that I had to write it down. I turned that experience into a poem, and I called it “Peace”. I took that poem, along with many others I had written, writing had become therapy for me. I am hoping that anyone who may have the opportunity to read my poems, get out of them, what I placed in them, they are as real as any could ever be. My most recently published book is titled, “Cancer, Yet Cancer Again, but I will not Die before I'm Dead”. I titled it that because I truly feel that you should not stop living, because you have cancer, and that is exactly what I almost did when I heard the word cancer. I am a realist, a regular everyday woman, who has overcome many obstacles, which took me to write, trying to produce inspirational stories. If I had not gone through all that I did, I would have never anticipated such.

The scars and mishaps, that are now attached to my body, due to cancer, are just that, and they are symbols of someone else inspiration and hope. I am thankful because if I had not struggled, I would not have found my true strengths. Not allowing anything stop me. I used to model, and I’m still modeling even after going through it all. I am a true example that you can survive cancer, not once, but twice, provided you get to it in time. I am not saying all will be easy, I am not saying all will survive it, what I am saying, is to have faith, fight with all you have, then hold on. I honestly believe, when and if you survive a horrific tragedy or a horrible disease such as cancer, it is for a reason. You have a purpose, and through that purpose, faith, compassion, and strength, true beauty is born.
