Exhale is a household air purifier designed to tackle rising levels of air pollutants in major European cities.
Designed by
A living filter constructed of a porous structure houses plant cells capable of breaking down and metabolising pollutants. This removes them from the cycle, rather than simply trapping them.

The Power of Plants: Research into pollution gave insights into some unique functions of plants, and their capability to break down pollutants.
Phytodegredation: “Plants take up and breakdown contaminants through the release of enzymes”
“ Phytoremediation is the use of plants to remove contaminants from the environment.”

Ideation and Development + The initial concept progressed into a filter housing living plant cells. Research into the emerging field of “Synthetic Biology” provided feasibility.
+ Existing research within the field proves that plant cells can be isolated, cultured and their viability maintained.
+ However experts responsible for this research were also approached, in order to gain further knowledge and insight into this potential innovative application of living cells.

Concept + Living plant cells, kept alive within a hydrogel (Alginate) are spread within a 3-dimensional crystalline structure (Zeolite) to form a biological filter capable of breaking down pollutants.

The air quality in cities across Europe is declining. London’s air regularly exceeds the World Health Organisation’s air quality recommendations by 30%, exposing those who live and work there to high levels of pollutants.

Insights into the adaptability of plants led to innovation. Plants are capable of absorbing pollutants within their vicinity, and then metabolising them on a cellular level.

By isolating the cells responsible for breaking down pollutants, and providing a 3-dimensional scaffolding, the cells become a living biological filter. The cells are kept alive and viable with water and glucose, and air is drawn through the structure. Particulate matter is filtered though, and on contact with cells they are absorbed. The cells break down the pollutants into nontoxic parts, removing them from the system rather than just containing and trapping them.

PTSD Nightmare Inhibitor
PTSD Nightmare Inhibitor: A wearable that prevents nightmares within PTSD sufferers.

Prescribed by doctors to compliment ongoing treatment for PTSD sufferers the device makes living with the condition somewhat easier by preventing debilitating nightmares and helping a user experience an undisturbed night’s sleep free from symptoms.

The Problem: Increasing numbers of returning soldiers from conflicts are struggling with mental health problems arising from traumatic events experienced whilst at war.
The US Department of Veteran Affairs estimates that PTSD afflicts:
Opportunity: “Compelling experimental support for the proposition that elevated Norepinephrine release in the brain is a major contributing factor in PTSD. This elevation in Norepinephrine is thought to promote arousal as well as the persistence and enhancement retrieval of traumatic memories, a core phenomena in PTSD� (Surmier D.J, 2013).
Create a wearable product that suppresses a nightmare before it happens, by monitoring the bodies physiological cues and combating this pro-actively.

I used to get another nightmare when I was on patrol with my friend and, although a bomb never went off, in my nightmares the bomb went off. It just got worse and worse and worse.� John Meighan, VICE Interview
If high levels of Norepinephrine flood the body the sensor in the nose piece sends a signal to the carthoid module. This signal begins the controlled release of a prescribed Norepinephrine inhibitor. The inhibitor stops the hormone from ever triggering PTSD nightmares, effectively reading signals from the body and pro-actively stopping a nightmare before it begins.

Product Considerations:

Light indicators give soft visual indication, flashing once to highlight the product turning on. Throughout the night each sleep cycle is then recorded and noted with a light. Cycles in which Norepinephrine was actively inhibited are also shown. A more detailed breakdown of sleep cycle patterns can be reviewed online by users.

Form is suitable for injection moulding, and after initial set up / mould tool costs, its small size would lend it well to large scale manufacture. Polymer choice should take medical guidelines into consideration.

The forms are designed to ergonomically fit the body. Minimal sizing ensures the least possible discomfort. The carthoid module is designed to match the contours of the jawline and the flexible nose strap fits to any user.

All sensors utilised are currently available technology. Polyimide sensors are currently used to detect Norepinephrine in tears, and a contact lens has been developed for this task, however the lens was unsuitable for this application as it would have dried the eye out during sleep.

The product solution is prescribed by doctors for PTSD sufferers rather than sold as a consumer product. This is because studies show that consumer wearables currently have a high abandonment rate. Approximately one third are abandoned after six months, compared to prescribed medical devices.

Each skier wears a small GPS locator allowing the instructor to be more aware of everyone’s well-being, whilst giving the group the freedom to enjoy themselves.

App Target Goals + Encourage brand loyalty and an energy saving community. + Improve reception of the E-on brand amongst consumers. + Utilise a reward scheme to encourage money saving and more sustainable thinking.
Experience Goals + App must be user friendly to be used in a relaxed, casual setting. + Positive involvement will be important until the user’s energy saving goals are consistently met.
