Venue Spotlight JULY 2010 ISSUE 73
Eat Me The Art Restaurant I
f someone were to invite you to a fancy dinner at what is described as a trendy restaurant, you’d probably imagine a place that looks a lot like Eat Me. Pardon the series of clichés, but this venue is modern, artistic and chic. What began as an eatery that allowed a potpourri of local artists to deck the walls with their master pieces, has transformed into a site for fine dining and full art exhibitions.
As an art gallery and restaurant, Eat Me’s minimalist décor and soft ash gray walls serve as perfect canvases for displaying featured exhibitions hand picked by H Gallery’s H. Earnest Lee. The split level dining area features both indoor and outdoor seating with a third floor private loft area that holds about 16 and is perfect for dinner parties. Australian owner Darren Hausler has combined the flavors of home with hints of local influences to create cuisine he describes as “Modern International & Regional”. The menu changes every three months, as the proprietor’s sister flies in from Australia to create a selection of vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes. For starters, try the Zucchini Carpaccio w/ Goat Cheese, Pine nuts & Raspberry Vinegar. Topped with cracked black pepper, thyme and olive oil, this appetizer is light and tangy with big bursts of flavor. Meat and poultry based dishes are available as in the Crispy Skin Duck Confit w/ Honeyed Brussel Sprouts & Prosciutto. The kitchen prepares its own confit, which results in a rich, succulent and extremely flavorful duck leg. The White Snapper w/ tomato confit and chickpeas are an excellent alternative for borderline vegetarians or seafood lovers.
Sticky Date Pudding. The Moroccan Spiced Orange M’hannacha Pastry w/ Chestnut & Rosemary ice cream is a definite show stopper. The ice cream’s play on both sweet and savory flavors complements the deep cinnamon and nutmeg spices of the pastry. The wine list features over 400 choices while the bar boasts an impressive selection of vodkas. Tucked away on a quiet soi just off of Convent Road, Eat Me draws a laid back international crowd. And, while many diners and visitors are art lovers, they typically stop in to enjoy all the yummy food. Eat Me Restaurant is currently featuring The RafPHYLUM by Bangkok based Spanish Artist Rafael Andres. Exhibition runs until July 31, 2010.
