Four Bagatelles by Ian A. Cook

Program Note Four Bagatelles for Clarinet and Piano is a grouping of four short pieces composed using the technique of 12-tone serialism. All four pieces use the same tone row, but each one contrasts with the others. The intention was to create works which, although serial and atonal, were accessible and not overwhelmingly dissonant, and the final product contains passages which even sound like momentary tonal progressions. Four Bagatelles for Clarinet and Piano tied for second place in the 2011 Minnesota Music Educators Association (MMEA) Collegiate Composition Contest in the Chamber Group division.
