The historical Celts were a diverse group of tribal societies in Iron Age Europe. Proto-Celtic culture formed in the Early Iron Age in Central Europe (Hallstatt period, named for the site in present-day Austria). By the later Iron Age (La Tène period), Celts had expanded over a wide range of lands: as far west as Ireland and the Iberian Peninsula, as far east as Galatia (central Anatolia), and as far north as Scotland. A Celtic is a modern Gael, Highland Scot, Irishman, Welshman, Cornishman, or Breton. The Celts in their time thrived in the arts, warfare, engineering, agriculture and finance. via ancient.eu/celt

As arguably iconic as the grinning, winking, basketball-spinning, pipe-smoking, top-hatted, cane-leaning leprechaun man may have been, I set to search beyond that. What is he winking about? And the clover is only three-leafed. The most common clover. The four-leafed clover, in Celtic tradition and now in common tradition, is regarded as the lucky one, with its chances of being found — 1 in 10,000. The four-leaf clover’s petals are said to represent faith, hope, love and luck. With all due regards to the Auerbach’s, isn’t it time to tweak the brand to be truer to the name, and more encompassing?

Celtic pride lives again.
NEW LOGOS

Primary
Partial
THE PRIMARY LOGO The traditional Celt knotted pattern, infamous throughout ancient and modern Celtic art and metalwork, is used most frequently throughout the brand. The clover returns, taking center stage, this time with four petals and a slight revamp in treatment. The basketball is lodged in its middle for good ole’ Celtic luck on the court. The team’s current commonly used ‘Futura Bold’ is the typeset for the team name, circled through the roundel, with a nod to the team’s establishing year. This also rids the brand of other random colors, like the black for black’s sake, and the mahogany brown. The partial primary simply removes the team name and accompanying roundel.

Secondary 1
Secondary 2
SECONDARY LOGOS The leprechaun still remains a part of the brand in the “heritage secondary.” This time, removing the cane, instead leaning upon the Celt-knotted BC acronym. The acronym type is inspired by what one would find in modern and traditional Celt/Gaelic hand-letter art. The establishing year is an integral part of the brand, as it was one of the original teams playing in the inaugural NBA season.

WORDMARKS The new typography takes a spin and builds on the original Boston Celtics’ wordmarks on current uniforms. Still block serif and arched. A full spelling out can carry the ‘braided’ B and C from the secondary logo.
Traditionalists, fear not... too much.

Alternate Uniform
UNIFORMS With the new brand, the primary uniforms still remain fairly simple, with ordinary trim and cut. The old gold alternate here is unlike anything they’ve done before, which we’ve seen a slew of surprises recently. It features side paneling of the Celt braided knot pattern, used throught the brand.
Parquet and four-leaf clovers.
APPLICATIONS
Š2015 | IANBAKAR.COM
THE PARQUET AT THE GARDEN The parquet was inviolable in my rebrand. The parquet is as quintessential as is wearing green, for the Celtics. The leprechaun also finds is way back to the court, subtly on the side line.

THE GEAR Newly revamped on-court apparel, shirts and caps. Nike becomes the new outfitter for the NBA, starting 2017.

THE SEASON LAUNCH The souvenir, the proof in the pudding. The ticket sales. Tickets often become part of a scrapbook, a place to grab a quick autograph or a keepsake to a memorable game. The ticket becomes an artifact of sorts, and a collectable item for fans.
