CHAPTER1

1TherewasamaninthelandofUz,whosenamewasJob; andthatmanwasperfectandupright,andonethatfeared God,andeschewedevil.

2Andtherewerebornuntohimsevensonsandthree daughters.

3Hissubstancealsowasseventhousandsheep,andthree thousandcamels,andfivehundredyokeofoxen,andfive hundredsheasses,andaverygreathousehold;sothatthis manwasthegreatestofallthemenoftheeast

4Andhissonswentandfeastedintheirhouses,everyone hisday;andsentandcalledfortheirthreesisterstoeatand todrinkwiththem

5Anditwasso,whenthedaysoftheirfeastingweregone about,thatJobsentandsanctifiedthem,androseupearly inthemorning,andofferedburntofferingsaccordingtothe numberofthemall:forJobsaid,Itmaybethatmysons havesinned,andcursedGodintheirhearts.ThusdidJob continually

6NowtherewasadaywhenthesonsofGodcameto presentthemselvesbeforetheLORD,andSatancamealso amongthem

7AndtheLORDsaiduntoSatan,Whencecomestthou?

ThenSatanansweredtheLORD,andsaid,Fromgoingto andfrointheearth,andfromwalkingupanddowninit

8AndtheLORDsaiduntoSatan,Hastthouconsideredmy servantJob,thatthereisnonelikehimintheearth,a perfectandanuprightman,onethatfearethGod,and eschewethevil?

9ThenSatanansweredtheLORD,andsaid,DothJobfear Godfornought?

10Hastnotthoumadeanhedgeabouthim,andabouthis house,andaboutallthathehathoneveryside?thouhast blessedtheworkofhishands,andhissubstanceis increasedintheland.

11Butputforththinehandnow,andtouchallthathehath, andhewillcursetheetothyface

12AndtheLORDsaiduntoSatan,Behold,allthathehath isinthypower;onlyuponhimselfputnotforththinehand SoSatanwentforthfromthepresenceoftheLORD

13Andtherewasadaywhenhissonsandhisdaughters wereeatinganddrinkingwineintheireldestbrother's house:

14AndtherecameamessengeruntoJob,andsaid,The oxenwereplowing,andtheassesfeedingbesidethem:

15AndtheSabeansfelluponthem,andtookthemaway; yea,theyhaveslaintheservantswiththeedgeofthesword; andIonlyamescapedalonetotellthee

16Whilehewasyetspeaking,therecamealsoanother,and said,ThefireofGodisfallenfromheaven,andhath burnedupthesheep,andtheservants,andconsumedthem; andIonlyamescapedalonetotellthee

17Whilehewasyetspeaking,therecamealsoanother,and said,TheChaldeansmadeoutthreebands,andfellupon thecamels,andhavecarriedthemaway,yea,andslainthe servantswiththeedgeofthesword;andIonlyamescaped alonetotellthee

18Whilehewasyetspeaking,therecamealsoanother,and said,Thysonsandthydaughterswereeatinganddrinking wineintheireldestbrother'shouse:

19And,behold,therecameagreatwindfromthe wilderness,andsmotethefourcornersofthehouse,andit fellupontheyoungmen,andtheyaredead;andIonlyam escapedalonetotellthee

20ThenJobarose,andrenthismantle,andshavedhis head,andfelldownupontheground,andworshipped, 21Andsaid,NakedcameIoutofmymother'swomb,and nakedshallIreturnthither:theLORDgave,andtheLORD hathtakenaway;blessedbethenameoftheLORD.

22InallthisJobsinnednot,norchargedGodfoolishly

CHAPTER2

1AgaintherewasadaywhenthesonsofGodcameto presentthemselvesbeforetheLORD,andSatancamealso amongthemtopresenthimselfbeforetheLORD

2AndtheLORDsaiduntoSatan,Fromwhencecomest thou?AndSatanansweredtheLORD,andsaid,From goingtoandfrointheearth,andfromwalkingupand downinit.

3AndtheLORDsaiduntoSatan,Hastthouconsideredmy servantJob,thatthereisnonelikehimintheearth,a perfectandanuprightman,onethatfearethGod,and eschewethevil?andstillheholdethfasthisintegrity, althoughthoumovedstmeagainsthim,todestroyhim withoutcause

4AndSatanansweredtheLORD,andsaid,Skinforskin, yea,allthatamanhathwillhegiveforhislife

5Butputforththinehandnow,andtouchhisboneandhis flesh,andhewillcursetheetothyface

6AndtheLORDsaiduntoSatan,Behold,heisinthine hand;butsavehislife.

7SowentSatanforthfromthepresenceoftheLORD,and smoteJobwithsoreboilsfromthesoleofhisfootuntohis crown.

8Andhetookhimapotsherdtoscrapehimselfwithal;and hesatdownamongtheashes

9Thensaidhiswifeuntohim,Dostthoustillretainthine integrity?curseGod,anddie

10Buthesaiduntoher,Thouspeakestasoneofthe foolishwomenspeaketh.What?shallwereceivegoodat thehandofGod,andshallwenotreceiveevil?Inallthis didnotJobsinwithhislips

11NowwhenJob'sthreefriendsheardofallthisevilthat wascomeuponhim,theycameeveryonefromhisown place;EliphaztheTemanite,andBildadtheShuhite,and ZophartheNaamathite:fortheyhadmadeanappointment togethertocometomournwithhimandtocomforthim

12Andwhentheylifteduptheireyesafaroff,andknew himnot,theylifteduptheirvoice,andwept;andtheyrent everyonehismantle,andsprinkleddustupontheirheads towardheaven

13Sotheysatdownwithhimuponthegroundsevendays andsevennights,andnonespakeaworduntohim:forthey sawthathisgriefwasverygreat

CHAPTER3

1AfterthisopenedJobhismouth,andcursedhisday.

2AndJobspake,andsaid,

3LetthedayperishwhereinIwasborn,andthenightin whichitwassaid,Thereisamanchildconceived.

4Letthatdaybedarkness;letnotGodregarditfrom above,neitherletthelightshineuponit.

5Letdarknessandtheshadowofdeathstainit;letacloud dwelluponit;lettheblacknessofthedayterrifyit

6Asforthatnight,letdarknessseizeuponit;letitnotbe joineduntothedaysoftheyear,letitnotcomeintothe numberofthemonths

7Lo,letthatnightbesolitary,letnojoyfulvoicecome therein

8Letthemcurseitthatcursetheday,whoarereadyto raiseuptheirmourning.

9Letthestarsofthetwilightthereofbedark;letitlookfor light,buthavenone;neitherletitseethedawningofthe day:

10Becauseitshutnotupthedoorsofmymother'swomb, norhidsorrowfrommineeyes

11WhydiedInotfromthewomb?whydidInotgiveup theghostwhenIcameoutofthebelly?

12Whydidthekneespreventme?orwhythebreaststhatI shouldsuck?

13FornowshouldIhavelainstillandbeenquiet,Ishould haveslept:thenhadIbeenatrest,

14Withkingsandcounsellorsoftheearth,whichbuilt desolateplacesforthemselves;

15Orwithprincesthathadgold,whofilledtheirhouses withsilver:

16OrasanhiddenuntimelybirthIhadnotbeen;asinfants whichneversawlight

17Therethewickedceasefromtroubling;andtherethe wearybeatrest

18Theretheprisonersresttogether;theyhearnotthevoice oftheoppressor.

19Thesmallandgreatarethere;andtheservantisfree fromhismaster

20Whereforeislightgiventohimthatisinmisery,and lifeuntothebitterinsoul;

21Whichlongfordeath,butitcomethnot;anddigforit morethanforhidtreasures;

22Whichrejoiceexceedingly,andareglad,whentheycan findthegrave?

23Whyislightgiventoamanwhosewayishid,and whomGodhathhedgedin?

24FormysighingcomethbeforeIeat,andmyroaringsare pouredoutlikethewaters.

25ForthethingwhichIgreatlyfearediscomeuponme, andthatwhichIwasafraidofiscomeuntome.

26Iwasnotinsafety,neitherhadIrest,neitherwasIquiet; yettroublecame

CHAPTER4

1ThenEliphaztheTemaniteansweredandsaid, 2Ifweassaytocommunewiththee,wiltthoubegrieved? butwhocanwithholdhimselffromspeaking?

3Behold,thouhastinstructedmany,andthouhast strengthenedtheweakhands

4Thywordshaveupholdenhimthatwasfalling,andthou haststrengthenedthefeebleknees.

5Butnowitiscomeuponthee,andthoufaintest;it toucheththee,andthouarttroubled

6Isnotthisthyfear,thyconfidence,thyhope,andthe uprightnessofthyways?

7Remember,Ipraythee,whoeverperished,being innocent?orwhereweretherighteouscutoff?

8EvenasIhaveseen,theythatplowiniquity,andsow wickedness,reapthesame

9BytheblastofGodtheyperish,andbythebreathofhis nostrilsaretheyconsumed.

10Theroaringofthelion,andthevoiceofthefiercelion, andtheteethoftheyounglions,arebroken

11Theoldlionperishethforlackofprey,andthestout lion'swhelpsarescatteredabroad

12Nowathingwassecretlybroughttome,andmineear receivedalittlethereof

13Inthoughtsfromthevisionsofthenight,whendeep sleepfallethonmen,

14Fearcameuponme,andtrembling,whichmadeallmy bonestoshake

15Thenaspiritpassedbeforemyface;thehairofmyflesh stoodup:

16Itstoodstill,butIcouldnotdiscerntheformthereof:an imagewasbeforemineeyes,therewassilence,andIheard avoice,saying,

17ShallmortalmanbemorejustthanGod?shallamanbe morepurethanhismaker?

18Behold,heputnotrustinhisservants;andhisangelshe chargedwithfolly:

19Howmuchlessinthemthatdwellinhousesofclay, whosefoundationisinthedust,whicharecrushedbefore themoth?

20Theyaredestroyedfrommorningtoevening:they perishforeverwithoutanyregardingit

21Dothnottheirexcellencywhichisinthemgoaway? theydie,evenwithoutwisdom.

CHAPTER5

1Callnow,iftherebeanythatwillanswerthee;andto whichofthesaintswiltthouturn?

2Forwrathkilleththefoolishman,andenvyslayeththe sillyone

3Ihaveseenthefoolishtakingroot:butsuddenlyIcursed hishabitation.

4Hischildrenarefarfromsafety,andtheyarecrushedin thegate,neitheristhereanytodeliverthem

5Whoseharvestthehungryeatethup,andtakethiteven outofthethorns,andtherobberswallowethuptheir substance.

6Althoughafflictioncomethnotforthofthedust,neither dothtroublespringoutoftheground;

7Yetmanisbornuntotrouble,asthesparksflyupward 8IwouldseekuntoGod,anduntoGodwouldIcommit mycause:

9Whichdoethgreatthingsandunsearchable;marvellous thingswithoutnumber:

10Whogivethrainupontheearth,andsendethwaters uponthefields:

11Tosetuponhighthosethatbelow;thatthosewhich mournmaybeexaltedtosafety

12Hedisappointeththedevicesofthecrafty,sothattheir handscannotperformtheirenterprise

13Hetakeththewiseintheirowncraftiness:andthe counselofthefrowardiscarriedheadlong.

14Theymeetwithdarknessinthedaytime,andgropein thenoondayasinthenight.

15Buthesaveththepoorfromthesword,fromtheir mouth,andfromthehandofthemighty 16Sothepoorhathhope,andiniquitystoppethhermouth 17Behold,happyisthemanwhomGodcorrecteth: thereforedespisenotthouthechasteningoftheAlmighty: 18Forhemakethsore,andbindethup:hewoundeth,and hishandsmakewhole

19Heshalldelivertheeinsixtroubles:yea,inseventhere shallnoeviltouchthee.

20Infamineheshallredeemtheefromdeath:andinwar fromthepowerofthesword

21Thoushaltbehidfromthescourgeofthetongue: neithershaltthoubeafraidofdestructionwhenitcometh

22Atdestructionandfaminethoushaltlaugh:neithershalt thoubeafraidofthebeastsoftheearth.

23Forthoushaltbeinleaguewiththestonesofthefield: andthebeastsofthefieldshallbeatpeacewiththee 24Andthoushaltknowthatthytabernacleshallbein peace;andthoushaltvisitthyhabitation,andshaltnotsin 25Thoushaltknowalsothatthyseedshallbegreat,and thineoffspringasthegrassoftheearth.

26Thoushaltcometothygraveinafullage,likeasa shockofcorncomethininhisseason

27Lothis,wehavesearchedit,soitis;hearit,andknow thouitforthygood

CHAPTER6

1ButJobansweredandsaid,

2Ohthatmygriefwerethroughlyweighed,andmy calamitylaidinthebalancestogether!

3Fornowitwouldbeheavierthanthesandofthesea: thereforemywordsareswallowedup.

4ForthearrowsoftheAlmightyarewithinme,thepoison whereofdrinkethupmyspirit:theterrorsofGoddoset themselvesinarrayagainstme.

5Doththewildassbraywhenhehathgrass?orloweththe oxoverhisfodder?

6Canthatwhichisunsavourybeeatenwithoutsalt?oris thereanytasteinthewhiteofanegg?

7Thethingsthatmysoulrefusedtotouchareasmy sorrowfulmeat.

8OhthatImighthavemyrequest;andthatGodwould grantmethethingthatIlongfor!

9EventhatitwouldpleaseGodtodestroyme;thathe wouldletloosehishand,andcutmeoff!

10ThenshouldIyethavecomfort;yea,Iwouldharden myselfinsorrow:lethimnotspare;forIhavenot concealedthewordsoftheHolyOne

11Whatismystrength,thatIshouldhope?andwhatis mineend,thatIshouldprolongmylife?

12Ismystrengththestrengthofstones?orismyfleshof brass?

13Isnotmyhelpinme?andiswisdomdrivenquitefrom me?

14Tohimthatisafflictedpityshouldbeshewedfromhis friend;butheforsakeththefearoftheAlmighty

15Mybrethrenhavedealtdeceitfullyasabrook,andas thestreamofbrookstheypassaway;

16Whichareblackishbyreasonoftheice,andwherein thesnowishid:

17Whattimetheywaxwarm,theyvanish:whenitishot, theyareconsumedoutoftheirplace

18Thepathsoftheirwayareturnedaside;theygoto nothing,andperish.

19ThetroopsofTemalooked,thecompaniesofSheba waitedforthem

20Theywereconfoundedbecausetheyhadhoped;they camethither,andwereashamed

21Fornowyearenothing;yeseemycastingdown,and areafraid

22DidIsay,Bringuntome?or,Givearewardformeof yoursubstance?

23Or,Delivermefromtheenemy'shand?or,Redeemme fromthehandofthemighty?

24Teachme,andIwillholdmytongue:andcausemeto understandwhereinIhaveerred

25Howforciblearerightwords!butwhatdothyour arguingreprove?

26Doyeimaginetoreprovewords,andthespeechesof onethatisdesperate,whichareaswind?

27Yea,yeoverwhelmthefatherless,andyedigapitfor yourfriend

28Nowthereforebecontent,lookuponme;foritis evidentuntoyouifIlie.

29Return,Iprayyou,letitnotbeiniquity;yea,return again,myrighteousnessisinit

30Isthereiniquityinmytongue?cannotmytastediscern perversethings?

1Istherenotanappointedtimetomanuponearth?arenot hisdaysalsolikethedaysofanhireling?

2Asaservantearnestlydesireththeshadow,andasan hirelinglookethfortherewardofhiswork:

3SoamImadetopossessmonthsofvanity,and wearisomenightsareappointedtome

4WhenIliedown,Isay,WhenshallIarise,andthenight begone?andIamfulloftossingstoandfrountothe dawningoftheday

5Myfleshisclothedwithwormsandclodsofdust;my skinisbroken,andbecomeloathsome.

6Mydaysareswifterthanaweaver'sshuttle,andarespent withouthope.

7Orememberthatmylifeiswind:mineeyeshallnomore seegood

8Theeyeofhimthathathseenmeshallseemenomore: thineeyesareuponme,andIamnot.

9Asthecloudisconsumedandvanishethaway:sohethat goethdowntothegraveshallcomeupnomore

10Heshallreturnnomoretohishouse,neithershallhis placeknowhimanymore

11ThereforeIwillnotrefrainmymouth;Iwillspeakin theanguishofmyspirit;Iwillcomplaininthebitternessof mysoul

14Thenthouscarestmewithdreams,andterrifiestme throughvisions:

1ThenansweredBildadtheShuhite,andsaid,

2Howlongwiltthouspeakthesethings?andhowlong shallthewordsofthymouthbelikeastrongwind?

3DothGodpervertjudgment?ordoththeAlmighty pervertjustice?

4Ifthychildrenhavesinnedagainsthim,andhehavecast themawayfortheirtransgression;

5IfthouwouldestseekuntoGodbetimes,andmakethy supplicationtotheAlmighty;

6Ifthouwertpureandupright;surelynowhewould awakeforthee,andmakethehabitationofthy righteousnessprosperous

7Thoughthybeginningwassmall,yetthylatterend shouldgreatlyincrease

8Forenquire,Ipraythee,oftheformerage,andprepare thyselftothesearchoftheirfathers:

9(Forwearebutofyesterday,andknownothing,because ourdaysuponearthareashadow:)

10Shallnottheyteachthee,andtellthee,andutterwords outoftheirheart?

11Cantherushgrowupwithoutmire?cantheflaggrow withoutwater?

12Whilstitisyetinhisgreenness,andnotcutdown,it witherethbeforeanyotherherb

13SoarethepathsofallthatforgetGod;andthe hypocrite'shopeshallperish:

14Whosehopeshallbecutoff,andwhosetrustshallbea spider'sweb

15Heshallleanuponhishouse,butitshallnotstand:he shallholditfast,butitshallnotendure

16Heisgreenbeforethesun,andhisbranchshootethforth inhisgarden

17Hisrootsarewrappedabouttheheap,andseeththe placeofstones

18Ifhedestroyhimfromhisplace,thenitshalldenyhim, saying,Ihavenotseenthee.

19Behold,thisisthejoyofhisway,andoutoftheearth shallothersgrow

20Behold,Godwillnotcastawayaperfectman,neither willhehelptheevildoers:

21Tillhefillthymouthwithlaughing,andthylipswith rejoicing.

22Theythathatetheeshallbeclothedwithshame;andthe dwellingplaceofthewickedshallcometonought.

CHAPTER9

1ThenJobansweredandsaid, 2Iknowitissoofatruth:buthowshouldmanbejust withGod?

3Ifhewillcontendwithhim,hecannotanswerhimoneof athousand

4Heiswiseinheart,andmightyinstrength:whohath hardenedhimselfagainsthim,andhathprospered?

5Whichremoveththemountains,andtheyknownot: whichoverturneththeminhisanger.

6Whichshakeththeearthoutofherplace,andthepillars thereoftremble

7Whichcommandeththesun,anditrisethnot;andsealeth upthestars

8Whichalonespreadethouttheheavens,andtreadeth uponthewavesofthesea.

9WhichmakethArcturus,Orion,andPleiades,andthe chambersofthesouth

10Whichdoethgreatthingspastfindingout;yea,and wonderswithoutnumber

11Lo,hegoethbyme,andIseehimnot:hepassethon also,butIperceivehimnot.

12Behold,hetakethaway,whocanhinderhim?whowill sayuntohim,Whatdoestthou?

13IfGodwillnotwithdrawhisanger,theproudhelpersdo stoopunderhim

14HowmuchlessshallIanswerhim,andchooseoutmy wordstoreasonwithhim?

15Whom,thoughIwererighteous,yetwouldInotanswer, butIwouldmakesupplicationtomyjudge

16IfIhadcalled,andhehadansweredme;yetwouldInot believethathehadhearkeneduntomyvoice

17Forhebreakethmewithatempest,andmultipliethmy woundswithoutcause.

18Hewillnotsuffermetotakemybreath,butfillethme withbitterness

19IfIspeakofstrength,lo,heisstrong:andifof judgment,whoshallsetmeatimetoplead?

20IfIjustifymyself,mineownmouthshallcondemnme: ifIsay,Iamperfect,itshallalsoprovemeperverse.

21ThoughIwereperfect,yetwouldInotknowmysoul:I woulddespisemylife.

22Thisisonething,thereforeIsaidit,Hedestroyeththe perfectandthewicked

23Ifthescourgeslaysuddenly,hewilllaughatthetrialof theinnocent.

24Theearthisgivenintothehandofthewicked:he covereththefacesofthejudgesthereof;ifnot,where,and whoishe?

25Nowmydaysareswifterthanapost:theyfleeaway, theyseenogood.

26Theyarepassedawayastheswiftships:astheeagle thathastethtotheprey

27IfIsay,Iwillforgetmycomplaint,Iwillleaveoffmy heaviness,andcomfortmyself:

28Iamafraidofallmysorrows,Iknowthatthouwiltnot holdmeinnocent.

29IfIbewicked,whythenlabourIinvain?

30IfIwashmyselfwithsnowwater,andmakemyhands neversoclean;

31Yetshaltthouplungemeintheditch,andmineown clothesshallabhorme

32Forheisnotaman,asIam,thatIshouldanswerhim, andweshouldcometogetherinjudgment

33Neitheristhereanydaysmanbetwixtus,thatmightlay hishanduponusboth

34Lethimtakehisrodawayfromme,andletnothisfear terrifyme:

35ThenwouldIspeak,andnotfearhim;butitisnotso withme

1Mysouliswearyofmylife;Iwillleavemycomplaint uponmyself;Iwillspeakinthebitternessofmysoul

2IwillsayuntoGod,Donotcondemnme;shewme whereforethoucontendestwithme.

3Isitgooduntotheethatthoushouldestoppress,thatthou shouldestdespisetheworkofthinehands,andshineupon thecounselofthewicked?

4Hastthoueyesofflesh?orseestthouasmanseeth?

5Arethydaysasthedaysofman?arethyyearsasman's days,

6Thatthouenquirestaftermineiniquity,andsearchest aftermysin?

7ThouknowestthatIamnotwicked;andthereisnone thatcandeliveroutofthinehand

8Thinehandshavemademeandfashionedmetogether roundabout;yetthoudostdestroyme.

9Remember,Ibeseechthee,thatthouhastmademeasthe clay;andwiltthoubringmeintodustagain?

10Hastthounotpouredmeoutasmilk,andcurdledme likecheese?

11Thouhastclothedmewithskinandflesh,andhast fencedmewithbonesandsinews.

12Thouhastgrantedmelifeandfavour,andthyvisitation hathpreservedmyspirit

13Andthesethingshastthouhidinthineheart:Iknow thatthisiswiththee

14IfIsin,thenthoumarkestme,andthouwiltnotacquit mefrommineiniquity.

15IfIbewicked,woeuntome;andifIberighteous,yet willInotliftupmyhead.Iamfullofconfusion;therefore seethoumineaffliction;

16ForitincreasethThouhuntestmeasafiercelion:and againthoushewestthyselfmarvellousuponme

17Thourenewestthywitnessesagainstme,andincreasest thineindignationuponme;changesandwarareagainstme

18Whereforethenhastthoubroughtmeforthoutofthe womb?OhthatIhadgivenuptheghost,andnoeyehad seenme!

19IshouldhavebeenasthoughIhadnotbeen;Ishould havebeencarriedfromthewombtothegrave

20Arenotmydaysfew?ceasethen,andletmealone,that Imaytakecomfortalittle,

21BeforeIgowhenceIshallnotreturn,eventotheland ofdarknessandtheshadowofdeath;

22Alandofdarkness,asdarknessitself;andofthe shadowofdeath,withoutanyorder,andwherethelightis asdarkness

1ThenansweredZophartheNaamathite,andsaid, 2Shouldnotthemultitudeofwordsbeanswered?and shouldamanfulloftalkbejustified?

11Thencamethereuntohimallhisbrethren,andallhis sisters,andalltheythathadbeenofhisacquaintance before,anddideatbreadwithhiminhishouse:andthey bemoanedhim,andcomfortedhimoveralltheevilthatthe LORDhadbroughtuponhim:everymanalsogavehima pieceofmoney,andeveryoneanearringofgold

12SotheLORDblessedthelatterendofJobmorethanhis beginning:forhehadfourteenthousandsheep,andsix thousandcamels,andathousandyokeofoxen,anda thousandsheasses.

13Hehadalsosevensonsandthreedaughters.

14Andhecalledthenameofthefirst,Jemima;andthe nameofthesecond,Kezia;andthenameofthethird, Kerenhappuch.

15Andinallthelandwerenowomenfoundsofairasthe daughtersofJob:andtheirfathergavetheminheritance amongtheirbrethren

16AfterthislivedJobanhundredandfortyyears,andsaw hissons,andhissons'sons,evenfourgenerations.
