SOCIETY OF SCOTTISH LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHERS EXHIBITION 2020

This publication was to be a welcoming to the exhibition scheduled to start on the 24th April 2020 however due to the Coronavirus outbreak this has become a taster for an exhibition that will now take place in spring 2021. All images in this book are of course for sale and if anything interests you feel free to use the artists details contained within. It is a pleasure to welcome you to the Society of Scottish Landscape Photographers Exhibition for 2020. This year’s event is the largest we have ever held with 35 members and over 150 images. We invite you to explore some of the moments our members have captured with their cameras which celebrate Scotland’s inspiring wilderness, from captivating close-ups to vast landscapes and wild seas. All of the images in this book will be on display from 25th April to 16th May at The Bield in Blackruthven in Perthshire. This beautiful estate has many walks through woodland and farmlands you can enjoy when visiting the exhibition which will be housed in the barn gallery. We are once again partnered with Zeiss this year and it is a great honour to be associated with such a prestigious brand. Lastly I would like to thank the panel that have helped put all of this together… Seán Kerr, Nicky Goodfellow, Paul Millar and especially Ian Barnes for all the graphics and promotional material work including this book.

Ian Barnes Ian is a landscape and outdoor photographer based in London. Living in a city has driven him to explore and embrace nature in all its glory. A few years ago he watched a documentary called ‘Chasing Ice’. A film about nature photographer James Balog and his Extreme Ice Survey highlighted the effects of climate change and hugely influenced the development of Ian’s photography. Whilst he has a love for mountains and winter landscapes he also endeavours to hone his skills in other areas such as woodland & wildlife photography. A proud member of the Society of Scottish Landscape Photographers, he was shortlisted for the 2017, 2018 and 2019 ‘Scottish Landscape Photographer of The Year’ competition which he recognises as a huge achievement and strengthens his drive for creativity. Ian has been commissioned to carry out commercial photography for GO Campers in Iceland as well as a number of private clients. His work has been published in Amateur Photographer and Outdoor Photography magazines.

Nick Silverstein Nick Silverstein is a landscape photographer based in the South of Scotland. Originally from Selkirk in the Scottish Borders he now lives in Stranraer, South West Scotland. Being surrounded by the sea means that Nick calls himself a ‘water based’ photographer as nearly all of his images contain water in some form, from the sea to rivers to lochs. Nick likes to capture the beauty of Scotland in various styles including mono and long exposure and will try his hand at almost anything to get a shot, including getting very wet from the odd wave, standing in a river without the correct footwear or getting up at 2am for a 3 or 4 hour drive!

Alistair Dick Having had a latent interest since he first bought a film camera back in the late 70s, the interest lay mainly dormant until digital cameras started to become commonplace and the digital darkroom allowed the photographer to take more control of the interpretation and output of the image that was in the photographers mind. Since the tools became available, it’s been a long and never-ending learning curve as he strives to get the best out of the frames available after the capture process. Alistair is not a mountaineer or overnight wild camper - he won’t be found on top of a Torridon mountain at dawn or in the middle of a blizzard! His photography is definitely a social activity with the occasional early morning start thrown in - much more a night bird than a morning lark. Describing himself as a bit of a photographic magpie, he likes to try different styles, crops and processes, trying to maximize the pleasure from whatever scene presents itself.

Chris Lauder Chris is a semi professional photographer from Central Scotland who enjoys nothing more than being by the coast or a flowing river capturing their movement to create soft, ethereal and subtle images whether that’s as part of the wider scene or an intimate detail. Over the years Chris has traveled to all corners of Scotland capturing the fantastic scenery the country has to offer, he says “Photography has taken me to places in Scotland I would never have had the inclination to visit before and I have witnessed some of the most amazing sights on my journey, long may it continue" Water features strongly in Chris’s work and with his use of long exposure and an eye for the small details Chris has developed a minimal approach to composition, which he hopes, gives his images a very relaxing and calming feel to them. Chris has received awards in various competitions over the years and in November 2018 he was awarded a Licentiate distinction of the Royal Photographic Society (LRPS).

Graham John MacKay Graham is an aspiring landscape photographer based in Glasgow. Having grown up beside the beach on the North Sea coast, it is perhaps not surprising that he developed a love for the outdoors. Although always a Highlander at heart, schooling and studies took him south to Glasgow, finally settling as a Consultant at Glasgow Royal Infirmary. The combination of science and craft which led him to a career in Surgery are the same aspects which attracted him to the art of photography. His aim in photographing the places that he visits is to try to capture some of the atmosphere and character of the landscape. Graham has had portfolios of his work 'Highly Commended' in national photography awards including the Scottish Landscape Photographer of the Year Awards. He has also had images published in national magazines and exhibited work in galleries around Scotland.

Neil McDade The photographer Neil McDade is a 44 year old photographer from Bathgate, West Lothian. He runs a brand named Spectacular Scotland which can be viewed on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. The main focus of his photography is capturing images of our spectacular landscapes, historical buildings and Scottish Castles. He started in photography around 2013 when he bought his first travel camera which gave him the grounding for the skills he has learned up until now. Over the years this photographer has recognised that not only an eye for detail is essential but the quality of the glass in the lenses and camera are just as important. Nowadays Neil uses a Nikon D850 with a selection of premium lenses by Nikon and Tamron. Photographing the majestic highlands and Islands of Scotland is the main focus of his work as he finds these areas to be the most picturesque parts of the country. Mountains, glens, lochs, castles and waterfalls are also of huge interest to Neil.

Gordon Siegel Gordon is a semi professional photographer from the Shetland Islands. Being immersed socially in island life, he has captured sporting images and traditional festivals, at the same time capturing the land and rugged coastline he has explored growing up on an island so richly steeped in culture and history. He hopes his knowledge of the Shetland landscape shows in his beautifully framed and printed exhibition work and that the influences of remote Island life along with Scottish and Norse heritage resonate in his striking images. Gordon's photography has been acknowledged with many award winning images from his 2019 Highly Commended Portfolio in the overall title round of the Scottish Landscape Photographer of The Year to his most recent success at the 2020 British Photography Awards, being short listed in the event category with his image from Up Helly Aa (Europes largest fire festival) taking home to Shetland the Peoples Choice Award, an achievement he is very proud of.

Richard Fox I started seriously photographing landscapes about 8 years ago when I made a risky purchase of a full frame DSLR camera, after a long break from film, when I was a kid. My love for landscapes grew from walking and cycling including cycling John O'Groats to Lands End. I have an extensive portfolio of images, primarily of Dartmoor, and Devon, after living there for 15 years. However, after many trips to Scotland, my wife moved near to the outskirts of the Trossachs National Park, and I am now beginning to explore this fantastic country much more. I currently use Sony E-Mount Full frame cameras and lenses (G and GM). I also have started to use a Drone for aerial based photography and loving the new challenges it brings. I have recently been chosen as a brand ambassador for Sirui photographic products in the UK, after using the brand for many years.

Fiona McRae I live in the North East of Scotland, in a tiny village called Pennan. I also travel frequently to the isles of Harris and Lewis. Most of my work reflects these two locations, but I like to travel outwith Scotland too, my favourite location for photography away from Scotland being New Zealand. For this exhibition I have chosen images from both the East and West of Scotland, one from Pennan and one from the Isle of Lewis. Alongside the images I am adding an intimate landscape from both locations, this is my favourite style of work. Sometimes, less is more. I hope that you enjoy looking.

Dalmore Beach Rocks, Isle of Lewis, Outer Hebrides I have a real love of geology, the colours, types of rocks, textures and shapes. To find a composition like this one, waiting for someone to come along and appreciate it, was a pleasure. This is ancient rock, some of the oldest on the planet. Tina Motz My name is Tina Motz and I am a mechanical engineer by profession. That may sound somewhat surprising to you, but both design and photography need a lot of creativity and planning, as well as some spontaneity. Photography is my balance between my job and the real world. I grew up in Germany in a former mining area, which wasn't the best place to develop photographing skills but my parents took me out as often as possible for holiday and weekend trips. My first camera was a Sony Digital camera when I was maybe nine years old, I still have it but it's part of the bookshelf now. Now I'm shooting with Canon DSLRs. It was always my dream to capture the amazing places that this planet has, and show those who didn’t know of them or couldn’t visit them. It is my hope that I can bring across the beauty of the places shown in this exhibition, and that all viewing them enjoy them as much as I enjoyed capturing them.

Gavin Duncan Gavin Duncan is a self taught photographer based in the Central belt of Scotland. He first picked up a camera in 2008 to document his travels around Australia and New Zealand. It wasn't until 6 or 7 years later that his love for the art and the whole process would flourish and he soon found himself dedicating more time to learning all aspects of photography. With this new found knowledge, he found himself out in all weathers creating images but gravitating more towards peaceful/idyllic scenes, often by the Lochside or deep in undiscovered woodland. Creating images in forests and wooded areas is both challenging and rewarding. Organising the often chaotic elements into an image which feels balanced and flows is the ultimate goal he tries to achieve when out photographing. He enjoys the interplay between colours and textures, dark and light, to try and convey a sense of the scene or evoke an emotional response to his images.

Andy Clark Andy has always loved the outdoors. Having grown up in a small village in Perthshire he spent his childhood in the woods climbing trees and making dens. It's fitting perhaps that he still feels at home in the same forests he spent as a child, now armed with a camera instead of a stick for a gun. For the last five years Andy has traveled Scotland and tried to encapsulate some of the wonderful scenes he has witnessed. He believes we live in an amazing country and its natural beauty is unsurpassed. Andy tries to keep his images as natural as possible, retaining the scene as he remembers them.

Andy MacDougall At home alone in the wilderness, Andy MacDougall is drawn to making landscape images in wild locations and weather, particularly where life shows a tenacious grip in inhospitable conditions. He is inspired by the persistence of life and the immense age of the Scottish landscape that changes and adapts but remains stolidly steadfast and resolute, continuously enduring. Andy holds a degree in design and also enjoys pottery & sculpture. He takes great pleasure from the entire photographic process of immersive photography – gathering knowledge of Scotland’s geography as he explores remote areas of the country, driving, camping, hiking, researching the history of locations and often writing creatively about making his photographs. Regularly shortlisted and awarded in national photographic competitions, he occasionally exhibits his images in print and regularly posts them online where he has received approximately 3/4 million image views.

Dawn Black You could say that photography is in my blood. My father and grandfather were both keen amateur photographers plus my grandfather also worked at Ilford. As a youngster I was usually to be found with a camera in hand and justifiably earned the affectionate nickname of "David Bailey". This early creativity and interest grew and saw me study History of Art and Architecture at university. My love of history and architecture shows still in my landscape images as I tend to include historic architecture within the landscapes I photograph. I have lived in 3 different countries over the past 17 years. In 2003 my family moved from Scotland to Singapore, then in 2010 we moved to The Netherlands until returning to North East Scotland in 2017. Since then I have been rediscovering my local area through the lens, some of which are shown here in this exhibition.

Paul Millar Paul is a Multi Award winning professional photographer from the Glasgow area. His view on photography comes from an admiration of those who can put pencil to paper and paint to canvas, allowing him to use his photography to fulfil a creative obsession and desire. A question put to Paul, some seven years ago, would perhaps change his life for ever. That question being, you have a DSLR camera, what do you use it for? He hopes from his exhibition images, the answer to that question has been fulfilled, as he travels Scotland capturing the light from the darkness. Paul now brands himself under the banner Paul Millar Photography, offering bespoke fine art framed prints to the highest of standards. Additionally, Paul also offers 1 to 1, land, sea and cityscape workshops tailor made to his client’s needs. Kevin Ainslie Kevin started out doing photography at school over 30 years ago. The course at school was a module covering the basics of film photography - how to use the camera, exposure triangle, processing the negatives, and printing in the darkroom. He took to it like a duck to water, and at the end of the module he was so proud to have his image shown in an exhibition highlighting the best photos produced on the course. He immediately left school after the course. Life, work, love, and kids all took up his time until his marriage broke up. In 2013 he fell back into photography to fill a void in his life. Kevin joined the Society of Scottish Landscape photographers, a great group of like minded people who want to share Scotland’s beauty. Now, Kevin is happily remarried and balances a full time job in Retail with photographing landscapes, weddings, portraits and property. And, ironically, in his free time, his preferred format has again become shooting film, and he is loving every minute of it.

Even with this new format he quickly realised that he needed to better understand the processing software in order to achieve the results he was looking for. After attending evening photography classes, watching lots of YouTube videos and reading photography magazines got himself to a level that was confident enough to show his work, with success in many competitions in local camera clubs. Davie Hudson Davie's style can and has been described as dark, but it's a darkness that adds calmness and serenity to the images. Being a film shooter all of the images in the exhibition have been shot on film and all scratches and blemishes have been left... life isn't perfect and Davie feels images should represent his vision on life, that includes wear and damage which shows the life we all have had. Davie says " I am a big fan of the Japanese aesthetic of Wabi-Sabi which embraces impermanence and the natural cycle of life and all of my images need to represent that. Shooting film I have found is the perfect way to achieve this" All of the images are framed in vintage sourced frames making them editions of 1 that can never be recreated and this is something Davie does with all his images.

Getting out with my camera and capturing images brings me great pleasure, but to go on and produce a beautiful print that reflects what I have seen, and to be able to share it with others is immensely satisfying” In 2019 Brian was awarded the FIAP Gold medal for ‘Best Monochrome Landscape’ at the 96th Scottish International Salon, an achievement of which he is particularly proud.

Kenny Muir Kenny was brought up in Upper Nithsdale, a picturesque and rarely visited rural community in southern Scotland. Whilst photography has not always been part of his life, he came to appreciate the local landscapes through walking and camping in the Southern Upland hills. His interest in landscape photography began in 2005 and since then his photographic journey has taken him to Iceland, New Zealand (where he spent sixteen months) and China. He moved to the Scottish Highlands in 2016 to take up post as a medical consultant in Inverness and landscape photography has become a perfect antidote to the fast-paced hospital environment. He has become increasingly drawn to the wilder locations in Scotland. A focus of the last four years has been Glen Affric, which contains one of Scotland's finest remaining remnants of Caledonian forest. A selection of these images are presented here.

Brian Doyle Brian spreads himself across many genres but is most at home in the Scottish Landscape. Brian has always been interested in photography, be it an iconic image, portrait or a definitive moment in time. The desire to make his own images didn’t embed itself until the mid 2000’s with the availability of Digital SLR camera’s and a young family to practice on. A change in circumstances meant the golf clubs had to be retired and Brian found a little more time to dedicate to photography. Joining his local Camera Club, Brian had to expand his knowledge quickly to compete with the best photographers at the Club and whilst competition isn’t necessarily what drives Brian, it did act as an catalyst to accelerate his knowledge and skills. Brian's landscape work is mostly captured on a high resolution mirrorless camera.

John McSporran John McSporran is a landscape photographer living in Erskine and The Trossachs areas of Scotland. He has a particular love of mountain photography which he combines with wild camping. He normally climbs (or descends) mountains in the dark, before dawn or after sunset, to catch those special moments as the sun rises and sets – the ‘golden hours’ of landscape photography. "I do it in all weathers and at all times of the year. I have been up top in knee deep snow when the temperatures are 'a wee bit chilly’ (minus 20) requiring the use of crampons and ice axe: or been caught in a storm on a mountain top in 60mph winds when the tent has collapsed about me. At other times I can be found beside the lochs of Scotland to capture the morning mists or dawn reflections. I love these experiences - the joys of landscape photography". He is a finalist and runner-up in the Mountain Photo of the Year competition.

His love of the natural world is fused with a deep passion for representing that world in context and with the utmost respect and integrity. He will always attempt to recreate the wonder of nature faithfully and, in his view, the wow factor should come from nature, not over-processing and digital manipulation. Scott Masterton Scott captures light and uses it to create unique landscape images with a modern contemporary feel. For him photography is about hunting light. Using the ancient instincts of the hunt to plan, reconnoitre, watch, wait, take aim and shoot. But instead of bringing death, he brings to life a unique moment of light and time, making it immortal. He loves exploring the beauty of our planet through photography and especially likes how the act of taking photographs helps to anchor him in the here and now, heightening his senses and enhancing the moment. He tends towards minimal long exposures in a lot of his images as he enjoys the empty places of our beautiful planet and finds the interaction of light and time particularly fascinating. His images reflect his vision of what he saw and felt at the moment of capture.
