Chapter 2: What is an ebook?
“An electronic book (variously: e-book, eBook, e-Book, eBook, digital book, or even e-edition) is a book-length publication in digital form, consisting of text, images, or both, readable on computers or other electronic devices. Although sometimes defined as "an electronic version of a printed book", many e-books exist without any printed equivalent. Commercially produced and sold e-books are usually intended to be read on dedicated e-book readers, however, almost any sophisticated electronic device that features a controllable viewing screen, including computers, many mobile phones, and all smartphones can also be used to read e-books.” Reference 1 “E-book files are intended for use on a specific range of devices intended for reading. The natural content for an E-book file is therefore a text based publications. There are numerous free eBooks available for example from “Aesop’s fables” to the complete works of Shakespeare. These works are usually fallen out of copyright, and so are freely available for download from e-book stores like e.g. Amazon, Bookstore or the O’Reilly Media bookstore. Why do I need to create both an .epub and a .mobi file?
Amazon Kindle- .mobi Sony eReader - .epub B & N Nook - .epub Apple iPad (via iBooks App) -.epub”

Dear Glossinauts, Since our launch a little over a year ago, almost 10,000 beautiful Glossies have been created by imaginative, creative and fantastic people just like you. It's been a rewarding journey of discovery and sharing. We're writing you today with some news that is both exciting and sad. We have been closely monitoring demand and usage of the Glossi product. What we’ve seen has prompted us to make a transition to keep up with the way an increasing number of our creators and readers are looking to create and consume content. While we have had very favorable interest in our current product, there has been a greater demand to create content that fits emerging mobile consumption patterns. The numbers here may be surprising - mobile devices are becoming by far the most common consumption vehicle, with over 70% of users relying on mobile as their most common reading device. And this percentage is higher in certain countries. Therefore, next month, we’re shifting towards a pure mobile consumption focus. Our goal is to create a lean, mean, mobile-optimized machine for easy creation directly from your smartphone. The result is a new product we will soon be releasing - a new publishing platform and format that looks and feels great on smartphone screens. This will make it easy for you to create and share mobile content in a quick, visual format with all your readers, followers, and friends. Because we have a very small team, we’ll need to focus our full attention and support on the new product, and thus have to say goodbye to supporting the Glossi creation tools. Don't worry, your published Glossies will still be available for anyone to see, but starting in early April, you won’t be able to make new magazines in the old format. If you’re interested in trying our beta version of the new mobile product for iOS or desktop, please sign up for the beta program here. We can’t wait to show you more! the Glossi team P.S. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to email us at contact@glossi.com, or by replying to this email.

How to Read These ePub eBooks These eBooks are in the standard .epub file format. To open them on an iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch, you just need to make sure you have the newest version of iBooks installed.. then click on the "Download eBook" link for the book you want! To open them on a computer (all platforms), we recommend first using the Mozilla Firefox Web Browser, then adding the free EPUBReader plugin. You could also use the free Adobe Digital Editions software (use CTRLO to add ePubs to the in-app library) to read them on a computer (Windows and Mac OS), but it's a little weird sometimes. If you have a Barnes & Noble NOOKcolor download the epub using the built-in web browser, then go to "Library > My Files > My Documents" and tap the epub files there! (You can also copy them via USB like you do with the original Nook.) On an original Nook or Nook Simple Touch download them to your computer, then connect the nook via USB and copy the epub files to its "Documents" folder!
Page 32
Empowering teachers and learners in Crafting ePerfect Ebook
To open them on an Amazon Kindle Fire, you'll have to following these instructions! To open them on other Kindles, you'll unfortunately have to install this hack! To open them on a Literati, LookBook or other Kobo device download them to your computer, then connect via USB and copy the epub files into its main folder! To open them on an Android device you'll need to install a reader app like WordPlayer, FBReader, or Aldiko. To open them on a Symbian device you'll need to install a reader app like Albite Reader. If you have just about any other device the books should just work, assuming you know how to load them on!

1. Add a new book Tap the 'New book' button at the top left of the screen.
2. Choose a shape for your book You'll then choose the shape of your book from the 3 available options, portrait, square or landscape. The options are for what shape an individual page will be.
3. Customise your front cover Let's start by choosing a nice bright colour for the background of the page. Tap the 'Inspector' button in the top right of the screen to choose a colour for your background. Choose from one of the standard colours or press 'Custom' to choose the particular colour you want.
Page 69
Empowering teachers and learners in Crafting ePerfect Ebook
4. Add some text OK, we're ready to give our book a title (make sure you've chosen a good one!). Tap the + icon and choose 'Add text'. Type your text into the window and press Done when finished. If you need to change or add to the text, just touch the text and it will bring the editing window and keyboard up again. If you make a mistake, you can always tap the Undo button in the top menu.
5. Edit the text So now you'll have some pretty standard black text on the page. Let's bring it to life a little. First, you can change the width and height of the text box by dragging the blue handles to the size you want. Next, whilst the text is still highlighted with the blue border, press the 'Inspector' button to access the style menu. You can adjust the size, colour, and style of the text to your heart's content.
Page 70

6. Add an image "A picture tells a thousand words", so let's add a photo to bring the page to life. Tap the + icon. You can either choose Camera and take a photo there and then, or you can choose a photo already saved on your iPad photo library. Find the photo you want to use and select it to make it appear in your book. You can then resize it if you wish.
7. Add a new page Adding a new page is a simple matter of tapping the large + button on the right of the screen, or you can use the Pages button in the top menu. Note that your first 2 pages are already added for you, so from the cover page, tap the > button to start adding text and images to the rest of your book.
Page 71
Empowering teachers and learners in Crafting ePerfect Ebook
6. Saving your book When you're done adding elements to the pages of your book, you can go back to the start menu by tapping My books. You'll see that your book is automatically saved and added to the list of books you've created. You book will have the default title 'A new book' by A.N. Author, so let's change that. Tap on the 'Inspector' button below your book and tap on the book title or author to change it.

How do you export a finished book to multiple iPads? 1. Sync through iTunes. Do you have a master laptop or computer that all of your iPads occasionally sync with? Once the CBB books are placed in the "books" folder in iTunes, you can push all of the books out to each iPad. 2. Post the ePub files on a website and make them available for download. For example, on this page I posted a finished sample ePub. If you click to download it on a computer, it doesn't do anything. But if you tap to download it on an iPad, once the file loads, your iPad will ask you how you would like to open the file, and you simply have to select iBooks. Once you've done that, the book will remain in iBooks until you remove it. If you don't currently have a website you use with students, www.weebly.com is a great company that allows educators to have free websites. Their builder is a drag and drop program that is super easy to use, and has a user-friendly file download option you can embed on your webpage. 3. Put the book in Dropbox. If you upload the finished book to dropbox, you can sign into your class dropbox account on all of the other iPads and download the book from there. It is important to note that dropbox itself will not be able to read the file, but if you export the file from dropbox to iBooks, the file will open just fine. (To export from dropbox, look for the little square with an outgoing arrow.) Questions on how to integrate this app? Email Jessica Pack with any questions you have about how to use this app in your class, or if you would like more specific suggestions for how you can use this app in your content area. Page 74

ePub Reader for Windows 8
Download here: http://download.cnet.com/ePub-Reader-for-Windows/30002125_4-75824080.html
ePUB Reader for Windows is a program that lets you view ePUB files. This is a very basic reader that will allow you to read your collection of digital books, documents, and comics. It also includes a converter to change ePUB files to PDFs. Upon opening an ePUB file the pages will appear on the right while the table of contents will be on the left. You can use this table to select specific pages and chapters of the ePUB. ePUB Reader for Windows has controls to zoom in or zoom out up to 400%. Generally load times and scroll speeds are fast, even for large documents with hundreds of pages. ePUB Reader for Windows’ PDF converter is very straightforward: you simply hit a button at the top and select where to save the converted file.Conversion times are quick, but the quality of the finished PDF is slightly low. Completed PDFs are often blurry or have minor jagged edges. It is unfortunate that there are no conversion options in the trial of ePUB Reader for Windows. ePUB Reader for Windows is a great program for viewing ePUB files. It isn’t nearly as useful as a PDF converter. Review last updated: 19/02/13

iBook
iBooks by Apple iBooks is Apple’s e-bookstore, and as such offers some impressive iPadspecific features. It is also one of the only apps that still supports purchasing a new e-book from within the app using your iTunes account so you can begin reading it immediately (third party booksellers removed this feature when Apple began enforcing the traditional iOS revenue model across all apps). The release of iBooks Author and Apple’s push for electronic textbooks further increased iBooks’ utility, as many of the store’s offerings contain enhanced media and pictures that are optimized for the iPad. The interface is well-designed and easy to use, with options for font size and style, searching, bookmarking, highlights, notes, themes, an in-app dictionary, brightness controls, and the app syncs your purchased books with every device using your Apple ID (although they can only be read on your iPhone or iPad). iBooks also reads books without DRM in ePub and PDF format, though they do not sync across your devices. For those who prefer audiobooks, the VoiceOver feature in the settings app can be used to read books aloud, but be aware that it affects the entire iPad, not just iBooks. Kobo books
Kobo Books by Kobo Inc. Download for itunes at: http://itunes.apple.com/au/app/kobobooks/id301259483?mt=8 You Tubes video on Kobo for iPad http://youtu.be/PD-7ObmNpVg Kobo links to the store of the same name, and if you create an account you can even download free books within the app. Kobo offers a more interactive and social reading experience, which may be a plus or a minus, depending on your views. Users can sign into their Facebook and Twitter accounts and share likes, notes, progress, and see what other people you know are reading or have liked. Unfortunately, there does not seem to be a way to turn this functionality off and set your account to “private,” which is troubling from a major retailer. Users who don't want the sharing functionality can use the app as a standalone reader but, when used this way, the app doesn’t have any features that substantially elevate it over apps such as BlueReader.

Kobo - from $138, thegoodguys.com.au The Kobo is the only independent reader on the list. Formerly stocked by Borders and Angus & Robertson, it is now sold completely separately from book retailers. In theory, you can read anything you like on a Kobo. However, the support and resources available online are not nearly as widespread as they are for the other three devices listed here. There is no specific library for children's books, nor games designed to run on the device. The top of the line Kobo Vox is hot to trot, but at $250 it is heading into dedicated tablet territory.
So although it can't touch the quality of the iPad, the Kindle wins out on price, range and child friendliness. Other parents agree. Mum of 8-year-old Sarah*, Allison, says that she chose the Kindle because of Amazon's reputation and the large number of kids' books on offer. "I would definitely recommend it to other parents," she says. David, who also has an 8-year-old daughter, agrees. "Ultimately I'd recommend it just as much as I would physical books." And of course, the real benefit is obvious: "It's reading that I'd recommend most of all."

Wattpad books
Free Books - Wattpad eBook Reader - Read Fiction, Romance, Fanfiction, Manga stories by top writers by Wattpad Download from itunes at https://itunes.apple.com/au/app/free-books-wattpadebook-reader/id306310789?mt=8 You tube video at http://youtu.be/M60DwcX1Sq8 Wattpad has been compared to YouTube for e-books, as it connects users to tons of free e-books uploaded by other users, some of which are copyrighted (these are removed if authors complain). The app offers a distinctive reading experience, as autoscrolling down the page is its standard method for turning pages. The feature works well and you can set the scroll speed, but not turning “pages somehow feels less like reading a book. Given the large amount of content available, the app is definitely worth a look. Reference 5

Chapter 18: How to Read iBooks on Windows By John Lister, eHow Contributor
, last updated July 25, 2013
Some DRM-free iBookstore titles are readable on a PC. Although you can purchase books from the Apple iBookstore on a computer, the iBooks application is only available on Apple portable devices and does not have a desktop version. The books sold at the iBookstore are in the common ePub format, which can be read by a variety of desktop applications. To read the books on the computer, first transfer the book files stored on your iPad or iPhone to your PC if necessary. It appears Kindle Books will work fine on Apple's iPad, I don't know if the iPad can be downloaded to my PC and viewed there and/or even added to a Kindle should I choose to get that as well. from gsetnes Link to iPad Forums here: http://www.ipadforums.net/ibooks/13170-can-itransfer-view-ibooks-windows-pc.html iBooks can only be purchased on an Apple mobile device and viewed on an Apple mobile device. As far as the Kindle stuff, you would have to unwrap or strip the DRM from the file which would make it a generic "ePub" that could then be viewed with the iBooks app. A friend of mine told me that he found lots of references to stripping the DRM from Kindle books by using any one of the popular search engines on the web. IOW, you won't find the specific instructions on how to do this on this forum! You can download an Adobe program to view the books on a PC using Adobe Digital Editions from patel4500 but Ultra eBook Reader is another way. Chapter 21 Impact of digital technology on children's reading. 
The_Impact_of_Digital_Technologies_on_Learning_FULL_REPORT_(20 12)
More Research on Digital Reading Needed, Group Contends By Benjamin Herold on May 12, 2014 11:58 AM A prominent child-advocacy group is calling for stepped-up research into the impact of digital technology on children's reading. "'Reading' used to mean sitting down with a book and turning pages as a story unfolded. Today it may mean sitting down with a device that offers multimedia experiences and blurs the line between books and toys," according to a release accompanying a new report, titled "Children, Teens, and Reading," from San Francisco-based nonprofit Common Sense Media. "All of this has a led to a major disruption in how, what, when, and where children and teens read, and there is much we don't yet know." Last week, Education Week took an in-depth look at an emerging body of research suggesting that screen-based digital reading may be harming students' comprehension and learning. Common Sense Media provides independent reviews and rating of children's media. In a comprehensive review of existing research and data from the National Center for Education Statistics, the Kaiser Family Foundation, children's book publisher Scholastic, and others, the group found an abundance of evidence pointing to worrisome trends in children's reading habits and abilities over the past two decades. But there is a paucity of research into the impact that increasingly prevalent digital reading technologies such as e-readers and tablet computers may be having.
Page 144
Empowering teachers and learners in Crafting ePerfect Ebook
As a result, the group suggests the creation of an inventory of digital reading platforms and products, as well as further research into six key areas 1. How do children and families use e-books? The emphasis should be on better understanding how e-books are used in the real world, as opposed to experimental settings, Common Sense Media argues. That could mean better analysis of what platforms and embedded functionalities are actually being used. 2. How does e-reading affect the amount that children and youth read? Data from the federal government and others indicates that reading rates among adolescents have dropped "precipitously," the group says; according to the National Center for Education Statistics, for example, just 53 percent of 13 year-olds and 40 percent of 17 year-olds are now weekly readers, down from 70 percent and 64 percent in 1984. What role is technology playing in that trend? 3. Does e-reading affect how children read? Research indicates that people tend to read on screens in short bursts, rather than with sustained focus. Many now also worry that the new generation of e-readers are replete with unhelpful distractions. 4. Do e-readers improve literacy in early childhood? Despite the promises of ereaders to help young children learn to read through audio prompts and other tools, many parents continue to prefer print books when "co-reading" with their kids, according Common Sense Media. There is also some evidence that children retain and understand less when co-reading with a parent on e-readers versus in print. 5. Does reading on a screen effect comprehension and retention? See last week's story for more on this. 6. Does the platform affect the amount of parent-child interaction when reading together?
Page 145

The market for digital reading products has exploded, with a dizzying array of new platforms, functionalities, and titles now available. Research needs to keep pace, Common Sense Media argues. "The nature of technological development and academic research is that we often don't know the answers to our most important questions until the use of a new technology is underway," the new report reads. "This is likely to be the case with reading as well."
