CNC ROUTERS Demand for Kimla CNC Machines Increasing Daily A look at what sets these European manufacturers apart The great thinker Plato (or possibly someone even before him) stated ‘Necessity is the mother of invention’. The phrase is as true today as it was then. When Przemyslaw Kimla (another great thinker) started building computer numerical control (CNC) systems from scratch some fifteen years ago he too quickly became the victim of necessity. So advanced were his ideas, so radical his thinking, that the manufacturers for whom he was developing could not match the invention. Przemyslaw, unimpressed with the array of CNC Router equipment available, soon realised in order to fully exploit his pioneering electronic ambition, a suitable machine design would need to be developed. Fifteen years on and Przemyslaw Kimla is collecting the MTM Gold Medal for technological innovation, presented by the Polish Prime Minister at Poland’s largest industrial trade exhibition, ITM. The Kimla range of CNC machinery now embraces all levels from desktop engravers to industrial cast iron milling machines, super high speed cutters with knife cutting systems, 5-axis machining centres, water jet machines and fibre lasers. Although relatively unknown in the UK, Kimla machines are quickly establishing themselves as the industry standard throughout Europe and worldwide. Materials worked include wood based and composite panels, all types of plastics, cardboard, aluminium, foam, steel and cast iron. Kimla products have provided hundreds of companies with a competitive edge in an extensive range of industries from sign making and point of sale, kitchen and packing case manufacture through to marble and granite worktop machining, and high precision aluminium component production for aerospace. As Mr Kimla himself says, “We have gained our rich experience performing advanced projects for 15 years. We continue to produce machines with a much greater technical advancement, exceptional performance and speed using all the very latest in technological possibilities. Our machines are the result of our long experience and innovative designs. Today, being considered a leader in the

industry, having installed more than 1000 machines worldwide, we are constantly developing and seeking new solutions. Kimla machines achieve industry-leading performance at prices which are significantly lower than the competition. We are improving our machines by ceaselessly pushing the boundaries of what is possible.” The majority of the components found on Kimla machines are manufactured in-house which guarantees their efficiency and quality at the highest level. At the heart of all Kimla machines is the unique CNC system, developed by Przemyslaw Kimla himself, with dynamic vector analysis (DVA). The DVA achieves extremely high performance processing thanks to the ability to process over 15000 lines of G-code per second allowing the machine to continually regulate the optimum feed rate resulting in higher

Twin gantry and multiple head configurations are just some of the customisation options available.

machining speeds while still maintaining an excellent finish. The latest Fibre Laser machines achieve speeds up to 5 m/second, with acceleration upwards of 3g. For many traditional applications the working speed is limited by the tooling technology and material being processed. However, even with these processes the advantage of Kimla machines increases the more complicated tool path is. Daltons Wadkin Director Alex Dalton has met with Mr Kimla on a number of occasions and at the outset of negotiations visited their works in Poland where he was very impressed with what he saw. “The Kimla set up is unbelievably professional and quality driven” said Alex. “I saw a real opportunity for Daltons Wadkin to work with a manufacturer with similar ethics to their own with a range of equipment which for price and build quality is unbeatable.” Daltons Wadkin have now completed several installations in the UK. The enquiry level is increasing daily with customers looking to exploit the advantages. Working demonstrations are available at the Nottingham Showroom or at customer installations by prior agreement.

CNC ROUTERS Kitchen and Bedroom Doors within 24 hours: The Browns 2000 Challenge Delivering custom made cabinet doors and components for kitchens and bedrooms within 24 hours from receipt of an order is a massive challenge for any manufacturer. However, Browns 2000, based in Cramlington, Northumberland, has won this challenge with a revolutionary business model and with the SCM Group’s very latest technology. Owner and Managing Director, Peter Brown, puts anyone at ease as soon as you meet him. He is a man from the North East of England who can laugh and lives life for what it brings. Then, surprisingly, you realise Peter is a "Furniture Genius" who has invented his own way of doing business in this complicated and competitive World. Peter, with a recipe all of his own, proves that there is still much to invent. But how? We are going to tell you, but before, Peter made a trip to Rimini, Italy, home of the SCM Group's headquarters, a company he is now very fond of due to the amount of high tech machinery he has purchased from them over the last few years. At Browns 2000 (www.browns2000.co.uk), a modern and custom built factory covering 220,000 square feet, there are really few machines without one of the SCM Group's brand names on them. These include a top of the range SCM “L’Invincibile” Sliding Table Panel Saw, various CMS-Brembana Macchine Glass and Marble cutting machines, SCM “Superset” and “Topset” Planer Moulders, a Sergiani Press for curved doors and components, DMC

sanding equipment, and a Morbidelli “HPL” Routing and Edge Banding Cell. There are also sixteen SCM “Ergon” Twin-Table High Spec CNC Machining Centres integrated with Mahros handling equipment, more than any other company Worldwide, two Stefani Laser Edge Banding machines and a Stefani “Slim Line” Edging Line. Peter Brown visited Rimini with SCM UK's Area manager, Ian McCarthy, as he was considering new investments, including a new Morbidelli “Powerflex” Boring cell. Peter Brown is a major customer, whom SCM's specialists in Rimini were very pleased to meet, not only for the energy he radiates, but also because he offered a new way of doing business, or at least, a way that the SCM personnel did not know before. Starting from a significant economic figure, i.e. the woodworking and panel business in England is valued at approximately one hundred million Euros considering new equipment, a little less than fifty percent is built by Italian manufacturing companies. Peter Brown comments “My adventure began in 1983, in a garage, as it often happens. I was struck by wood, and how I could transform it into various products. It was a real passion. I involved my wife, and together we created the story of Browns 2000. In thirty years, many things have changed. Today we have approximately 20 million Euro revenues, employ eighty people, including our children, and we specialise in cabinet doors and components

for kitchens and bedrooms." "We do not just process wood and MDF, but, in order to provide a full and fast service to our wide range of customers, we have also learned how to process both marble and glass. We are more independent, we have acquired more expertise to manage the entire processes ourselves. This makes the difference with other companies. We provide complete high-quality solutions, using the best materials and technology currently available on the market. That’s our philosophy!" “Sales and manufacturing somehow coincide within our company” Peter Brown continues. “Customers who come to us don’t just see products, but also how we build them, what we do, and with which tools we utilise. Also, for this reason, we have invested hugely in machinery and equipment, in order to be sure we achieve the final result through flexibility, speed and productivity. If you choose one of our cabinet doors or kitchen sets, you don’t just buy a piece of panel, glass or marble, you buy us and what we are. You buy Browns 2000." "Those who know the peculiarities of the British market can easily understand the Browns 2000 phenomenon”, said Gabriele De Col, Managing Director of the SCM Group in the United Kingdom, who, together with Ian McCarthy, is the link between Browns and the Italian wood and panel technology suppliers. When Peter says “customers”, he means something like two thousand UK installers. Not a few hundred resellers of a big

CNC ROUTERS manufacturer, but thousands of joiners, however inaccurate this definition may be, who collect orders from the final consumer, to manufacture and fit a new kitchen or bedroom or renovate an old one. They don’t produce or they only manufacture made-tomeasure carcasses. They choose everything with the final customer, they identify what they need and they purchase exactly what is required for the consumer. An order is sent and then arrives at Browns 2000 and is immediately sent to the production department and executed within a few hours. It is then delivered directly to the final consumer, where it is then installed. Very often, especially in big cities, installers come from outside, so it is convenient to find the kitchen at its final destination, costs being optimised as well. With this approach, the "price variant" has a lower impact and profit margins are more interesting. The value chain is minimised as the drawing is supplied by the installer, goes directly into production where the CNC Nesting machines, powerful membrane presses or high speed edge banding machines help complete the order within the day. Very often, design is carried out in a dedicated area of the company website, where customers can select models, finishes, handles and accessories, set dimensions, choose complementary products, colours and type of drawer or door closure, etc. Gabriele De Col adds "The construction heritage in the United Kingdom is often “historical”, so it’s almost impossible to implement standard sizes or solutions. Nearly everything is made to measure or tailor-made. Standard production concerns only a few big manufacturers. We are not talking about large volumes, but rather a big service! An unknown model elsewhere, and even in the UK, only the best

SCM’s Ian McCarthy and Peter Brown in an SCM Group Factory

companies work like that. We are talking about higher quality production, to the extent that laser edge banding is therefore justified." Peter Brown totally believes in Stefani’s laser technology and he has recently invested in the World’s very first Stefani DoubleSided first and second pass linked combination laser edge banding line. It was delivered in November 2013 together with the Stefani “J-profile” Soft-forming Single-Side Edge Bander for handle-less doors, another exclusive solution embraced by Browns 2000. “Laser edge banding is one of our latest investments” Peter Brown states. “In the last fifteen years we have spent over 70 million Euros on new machines, but I was blown away by laser edge banding by Stefani! It's a wonderful gluing method, offering fantastic results, especially for high-gloss cabinet doors. We switched from an excellent “Slim line” machine, which also ensures high quality edge banding, with a virtually invisible glue line, to a laser machine. The result was so convincing that we immediately purchased a second machine and decided we can accept higher costs if you can work with excellent results at a very high speed." Peter Brown has selected all his machines based on the very best quality available, and always considering they do not make one thousand identical cabinet doors, but one thousand doors all different from one another. In the UK, the in-line manufacturing concept is still dominant amongst large manufacturers, but more companies, in view of the economic situation and modified demand structure, realise that having to deal with large stocks or warehouses of semi-finished materials can be a huge and costly problem. How did Peter Brown choose the SCM Group as his reference technology partner? “The first experience was an edge banding machine we really liked. In those years, we had business relationships with other Italian suppliers, but the level of satisfaction was not the same as with SCM. The rise of nesting technology, an ideal method for our production patterns,

See our website and interactive magazine www.p-j-production.com

Browns 2000 mirrored door

brought us closer to SCM and their “Ergon” CNC Machining Centres, assisted greatly by SCM's Ian McCarthy." "Today, we have sixteen Ergons which handle virtually all the components we produce. Five Ergons are equipped with handling units connecting them directly to the DMC Sanding Line, followed by membrane presses. Having chosen this system, we have grown very quickly and we can now go from drawing to finished product in one day." "When customers decide to change their kitchen or bedroom, they don’t want to wait. We decided to work to make this possible, and we accelerated into that direction, which is basically the same as the "Batch One" everyone is now talking about. If you allow this expression, our challenge is producing big volumes of made-tomeasure elements for small installers, a sort of contradiction that technology can solve. In addition, each time we see the opportunity to work differently, faster, better and cheaper, we meet our installers, we inform them about our ongoing projects, what we intend to do, and we think together about the best way to implement change. And it works. Totally!”

Eureka Display Turns to HOMAG for Quality and Service Established in 2002, Eureka Display is one of the UK’s foremost manufacturers of shopfitting equipment. The company uses only top grade, quality materials to provide long lasting and good looking products. They offer a huge selection of finishes and pride themselves in quick order turnaround and delivery – they are not in the business of letting customers down. Eureka’s company manager, Ashley Littlewood, explains, “We have built our business on quality, choice and service. These three elements are absolutely fundamental to our company ethos and to achieve them it has always been our philosophy to invest in the best equipment we can afford.”

The world’s No.1 woodworking machinery company “Over the years, we have come to realise that no other machine manufacturer can hold a candle to HOMAG. Our initial experience with them began when we bought our first

edgebander; it proved to be a real workhorse and is still going strong today. “In 2012 we realised we needed to invest in more equipment to drive our business to the next level. To see what the market offered, we visited W12 at the NEC. HOMAG dominated the show and, having done our due diligence evaluating alternatives, we placed orders for a BRANDT Ambition 1440 edgebander to work alongside our existing machine and a Holzma HPL 530 to replace an aging beam saw.”

Increased productivity and quality “The Ambition 1440 immediately increased our volumes and the quality of the finished product was exceptional. Whilst the edgebander was excellent, the saw turned out to be outstanding. We were amazed at how fast and how many panels we could cut compared to the old machine. “What impressed us about both machines is their build quality. All HOMAG Group brands are finished to such a high standard and they are so reliable. The Holzma saw’s rack and pinion system is so much more

robust than chain driven alternatives.”

Rapid response service with a smile “On the odd occasion we have experienced any issues, the service team at HOMAG UK always solve them as fast as they can. What’s more, they go out of their way to handle each case in a friendly and helpful manner. “We cannot afford to have our machinery down for long periods because it negatively impacts our ability to maintain the rapid order turnaround and delivery performance that our customers expect. Our experience with HOMAG over the years is that spare parts are available on very short lead times and the technical support we get from HOMAG UK in the event of a issue means we are up and running in no time at all.

Investing in a new CNC machining centre “In spring 2013 we made the decision to replace the WEEKE Venture 3 CNC machine we had with a more advanced model. To see what

The HOMAG BMG 512 has improved productivity for Eureka Display by at least 40%

options were available we visited Ligna 2013. The market has moved on considerably since we invested in the Venture 3. There were a number of options open to us, but the HOMAG BMG 512 stood head and shoulders above the competition and so we placed an order.”

Installation – a precision operation “As you would expect from a market leader, the installation process was faultless. Following the site survey, the machine was delivered on time and the HOMAG engineers went about removing the old Venture 3 and installing the new BMG 512 with expert precision. “There was minimal disruption to the factory so we were able to maintain production throughout. Once installed, the engineers trained our team for four days on the machine and three days in the

classroom familiarising them with the woodWOP software. “Although the BMG has only been in a short while, it is already abundantly clear that this machine will have a significant impact on our business. We estimate it will improve productivity by at least 40% and with the edgebanding capability for shaped parts it opens up a whole new range of services we can offer. “It has already enabled us to attract new customers which is real benefit. More importantly, perhaps, The BMG 512 can handle jobs which previously took three or four operations, so it has freed up operators to work in areas of the production process were we needed more hands to keep the work flow running smoothly.

Versatility, speed, quality and service

raised the bar considerably and we still have to discover the full extent of its capabilities. Like all the HOMAG Group kit we have purchased, it is exceeding our expectations. “As for HOMAG UK, they continue to provide us with honest sales advice and excellent service. They always do what they say they are going to do and you can’t say fairer than that. In these challenging times it is reassuring to deal with a reliable, trustworthy company that has our best interests at heart,” concludes Littlewood.

CNC ROUTERS Enhanced Material Hold Down Facility for AXYZ Routers Leading supplier of CNC routing and cutting solutions, AXYZ International has introduced a further optional production enhancement that will greatly improve material hold down efficiency. Called the AXYZ Auto Zone Management System, it is a highly configurable software production tool option that ensures the material to be processed is held securely throughout the cutting cycle to ensure optimum accuracy and a perfect finish. The system provides three different vacuum modes (Live Deck, Pendulum and Independent Switching). Live Deck will automatically activate and deactivate vacuum zones according to the live position of the cutting head. The Pendulum Processing mode allows the vacuum to switch between two virtual zones (usually the front and rear halves of the machine) so that the router can operate continuously for

10 Panel & Joinery Production JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2014

maximum productivity. For total manual control, individual zones can be switched via the Zone Manager function. In addition to greatly improving material hold down, the AXYZ Auto Zone Management System eliminates material wastage and machine downtime caused by incorrectly set vacuum valves. The system now supplements other standard and optional production tool enhancements introduced by AXYZ International to expand the capabilities of all AXYZ routers. These have included the latest A2MC machine control system that greatly reduces or eliminates ‘bounce’ and vibration caused by sudden acceleration or deceleration often found with other control systems. The new AVS (AXYZ Vision System) is fully integrated within the A2MC controller and compatible with all of the cutting tools used with AXYZ routers, including oscillating, tangential and drag knife cutters to enable a

much wider range of materials to be processed. Introduction of a new helical rack and pinion drive system as an optional production tool enhancement has further expanded the performance capabilities of AXYZ routers by greatly reducing machine wear. This has been made possible by the incorporation of multiple gear teeth within the system that ensures a more even distribution of the work load, resulting in a significant increase in feed rates, more accurate cutting and smoother and quieter operation of the router.

Trend Industrial Tooling Success at Tewkesbury Trend Machinery & Cutting Tools Ltd recently attended an in-house show with one of their Modular Window System dealers, Tewkesbury Saw Company, Gloucestershire. Colin Peacock and Ian Small from Trend were on hand and ran a number of demonstrations to interested parties throughout the two-day show. The demonstration consisted of a complete outer frame for a High Performance timber window produced in less than 5 minutes on Trend’s own sliding table spindle moulder. Attendees to the show were amazed at the speed and accuracy achieved by the Trend system that allows the spindle height and fences to be set in seconds and not altered to produce all of the slots, tenons and profiles on the outer frame and sash. The Trend system can produce eight different styles of window as standard and

they have ten different profile styles available off the shelf. An existing customer of Tewkesbury Saw’s, Mr Keith Davies, who purchased the system back in 2010, was also present, and was able to give potential customers an insight into how the system has revolutionised his joinery business. Ian Small from Trend commented that it is not just the speed and accuracy of the system that impresses people, it is the fact that both tooling and machines are kept in stock in the UK for immediate despatch. Several orders for machines and tooling were placed after the show and had all been despatched within 3 weeks of the orders being placed. This included a non-standard spindle moulder that had to be brought in direct from our Italian machine supplier. Trend and Tewkesbury Saw Company are already looking forward to an equally successful in-house show in March 2014.

Renolit New Solid Colours Modern colours, trend setting textured surfaces. The RENOLIT 3D stock range new introductions in 2013 included a number of stunning new solid colours. Colour gives an instant visual impression. Change a colour and you can change the complete effect of a room and its atmosphere. From light and airy, to dark and sultry; providing a background or a vivid statement; brash or subtle; contrast or complimentary. No wonder RENOLIT recognises the importance of colour and the necessity of continuously introducing up-to-date new colours in to their 3D stock range. Here are six of our newest colours all of which benefit from the addition of a modern textured surface. The surface is equally as important as the colour itself to the overall finished visual style of a new effect, and these textures enhance the overall finished effect by adding style, design and feeling to the colours. The six new colours featured span two different spectrums simultaneously giving very individual results. They range from light to dark colours and smooth to deeply structured surfaces. Three variations of Nova; Nova Tadold, Nova Light Cashmere, and Nova Grey, offer a co-ordinating palette of cream, taupe and anthracite respectively, with a semi-matt paint effect flat surface. Sand Mellowtouch Matt, in light beige, has a silky smooth finish, while the last two new colours are highly structured darker designs. Seeing the Wood for the Trees The recent economic difficulties have provided challenges for every business, but when times are tough one of the noticeable results is that those companies offering ‘me too’ products and services are the ones that suffer most. This is one of the reasons that David Clouting Ltd goes to great lengths to ensure that its designs are not only at the cutting edge of the latest fashionable requirements, but that these will provide customers with the highly valuable benefit of differentiating their business from the competition. One of the most noticeable trends in recent years has been the emergence of wood grain as a desirable effect. This has been applied to virtually every area of the interiors market, with the obvious danger for some of competing solely on price, as everyone jumps on the bandwagon, with the inevitable outcome of driving down profits. Rather than becoming trapped in this downward spiral, however, furniture manufacturers can set themselves apart from the commodity market by utilising the quality surfaces offered by David Clouting Ltd. The difference between its products and others on the market can be quickly identified through the examination of two of its Decofoil woodgrain effects. The first is Sand Lyon Ash UQ614-Z5 (Edging Melamine M84780, PVC PR949LRV) which, through its simplicity of design, provides a natural look that will sit comfortably in virtually all room settings. This high quality product combines subtle warmth with an overall soft light colouring, with the end result being a superb colour combination that will easily blend with a wide selection of interior decor colour combinations. Through close collaboration with LG, a long term partnership that continues to see the highest standards maintained while keeping prices highly competitive, further aspects continue to be included in its new product launches. In the case of Sand Lyon Ash, this has resulted in the creation of a contemporary texture that works perfectly in tandem with the linear nature of the wood print.

Sand Lyon Ash

There is a third combination from which manufacturers can benefit, that of the flexibility of PVC and MDF to fit with any shape and style of fully wrapped panels, providing limitless options to match customer requirements and another wealth of opportunities for companies to deliver value-added service. Sand Lyon Ash is matched to Egger MFC Sand Lyon Ash and David Clouting Ltd is delighted that Pfleiderer has introduced Coimbra Ash R5028-RU - the original name of Sand Lyon Ash into its 2013 range, which means that is also an exact print match. Complementing this further, David Clouting Ltd also stocks matching edging tape. The second Decofoil design to illustrate the many advantages provided by the company’s designs is that of Rijeke Oak G3606-Z5. This wasintroduced as an MFC/MDF produced by Kronospan last year, with the David Clouting design providing an exact match in PVC and allowing customers to enjoy the flexibility of this versatile material. Rijeke Oak is another of the company’s products that blends both print and texture to represent a light, straight-grained linear oak. The end result is a highly commercial effect with a fresh tone, creating a timeless and classic design that will stand the test of time, destined to become the next generation’s leading straightgrained oak. The use of the new Z5 embossing texture has been created by considerable investment by LG Hausys and used to enhance both natural appearance and tactile effect. Versions of both horizontal and vertical texture are offered to match all requirements of furniture design.

Kronodesign Gets Real with Natural Touch Kronodesign has put its most authentic timber finish – Natural Touch – at the fingertips of interior and furniture designers. Natural Touch allows designers to specify a genuine wood surface without the higher costs associated with exotic woods and veneers. This is the first embossed-in-register board that demonstrates physical depth by precisely synchronising the surface structure to match the image of the wood grain below. Fourteen Natural Touch decors now feature in Kronodesign’s new global ‘bible’. This means designers can get their hands on incredibly realistic wood design surfaces, quickly and efficiently, through a global distribution service called Kronospan Express. The authentic look and feel of real timber – from its rich grain and tactility through to its subtle variations in shade and tone – can be specified for almost any project. Paul Duddle, Global Kronodesign Ambassador, says: “Natural Touch has made it into the Kronodesign ‘bible’ because it is one of our flagship products. The range is a new generation of Fallow Walnut embossed-in-register panel

finishes. Put simply, Natural Touch is like real wood but with unlimited design possibilities.” More… The Kronodesign team is constantly on the road chasing inspiration, seeking trend intelligence and gaining future market knowledge. It is their nonstop journey around the world - living and breathing global design - that ultimately informs Coca Walnut Kronodesign’s on-trend interior and furniture collection of surfaces. Backed by the best design and commercial sense, Natural Touch gives designers the option to specify a natural and intimately tactile wood texture but with a durability, flexibility and consistency of colour and grain that is impossible to replicate with veneer or timber.

Superpan – Super Versatile FINSA’s Superpan board product is the panel product of today and tomorrow offering exceptional performance for a variety of applications. Superpan underpins many of the Spanish multi-national Group’s designated products like melamine –faced boards, veneered panels and a superb substrate for customer choice lamination. FINSA has developed an exclusive manufacturing technique by enveloping a chipboard core between two faces of MDFlike fibres in a continuous process. Originally developed for the MFC products market, Superpan is now seen as the optimum substrate for the latest high gloss finishes and photo-realistic patterns and grains. FINSA UK’s Rafael Willisch explains that while Superpan is actually a chipboard central core sandwiched between two face layers of MDF, FINSA’s exclusive manufacturing process has achieved this with no extra cost to the user. Whereas some door manufacturers, for example, have resorted to a solid MDF substrate, Superpan offers exactly the same qualities at the cost of chipboard. Rafael Willisch says that the relative divergence in price between chipboard and MDF has allowed Superpan to find a natural position in the market. The MDF faces of Superpan eliminate any irregularities or pitting associated with raw chipboard and this translates into perfect

laminating for the final décor – for high gloss finishes it eliminates the risk of the dreaded “orange peel” blemish. Superpan also offers other important advantages – mainly a far superior cut with a chip-free edge and a greater residual rigidity which prevents the bending or sagging associated with chipboard. FINSA also offer Superpan with a full range of uni-colour or woodgrained and special effect melamine and veneered faces and is the chief substrate for the exciting new four categories of the FINSA trend finishes. Superpan is also available for the construction in moisture-resistant P4 and structural P6 worktop grades. Superpan PLUS P6 is also ideal for suspended and mezzanine flooring in factories and offices with superior performance in terms of load

bearing strength over regular chipboard. Superpan’s latest incarnation is the hightech Superpan STAR product – a collaboration between FINSA and Germany’s BASF chemical giant in which the chipboard core of the Superpan board is infused with a polymer product called Kaurit Light giving a board that is up to 30% lighter than the standard Superpan board but not compromising on any of the performance characteristics. FINSA hold extensive stocks of Superpan at their headquarters on Merseyside and distribute the product nationwide in minimum order quantities. At What Point Does Budget Become False Economy? Even with the UK construction output forecast to grow in 2014, it is understandable that in these difficult times the pennies have to be looked after, but Brian Maddox, UK sales manager of Leitz Tooling UK, believes there are massive hidden costs in compromising on tools. He says, “Our tools are sometimes perceived to be expensive, but if, through quality and consistency of service, they last twice as long – and in many cases longer – than the alternatives, then it has to be money well spent. “Customers who have invested in Leitz in the UK over the last 30 years understand this,” continues Mr Maddox. “That part is simple, but there is a lot more to using Leitz tools. Everything we make is manufactured to EN847 1 – 3, which means that every tool is tested to a high standard of accuracy and safety which helps prolong the life of the tool and, ultimately, the machine itself. Our tools give good finishes, which mean less sanding and rectification, less coating and ultimately, lower labour costs. Companies can become fixated on the purchase price of tools, but when they do look at their tooling budget they find it is a very small portion of their turnover. What we call ‘environmental issues’ - labour costs, material cost, rectification cost, downtime, setting costs, noise issues, safety issues and dust issues to name a few - far outweigh tooling budgets, but correct,

Leitz saw sharpening services also include Leitz portable sawblades

quality tools can have a fantastic positive impact on other costs.” “Over the last few years, we have been working in particular with many companies interested in efficiency,” explains managing director Simon Liddell. “This has paid them dividends now the market is growing again. We have many examples where customers were changing tools every shift, now it’s once per week. Other areas where we have introduced new technology, such as our MC33 coated tools, have seen dramatic improvement, with even better surface finishes, more components produced per hour and a lower tooling cost per component.” A high quality sharpening service is another key issue. Derek Statham, Leitz UK service and works manager says, “Sharpening TCT saws 12 – 15 times is relatively easy, but the ability to sharpen the same saws to 20+ regrinds can reduce your overall tooling costs by 50% or more. The high precision grinding service we provide can also yield longer service life between sharpening or repair, resulting in fewer tool changes, less machine down-time and improved productivity; all of which are big concerns for all our customers, whether they are small joinery workshops or large manufacturers.”

Saw blades focus Saw blades are a huge consumable product for mass furniture manufacturing and building interiors, as well as kitchen and shop-fitters, flooring installers, construction and site workers. Leitz Tooling has an extensive range from entry level to performance saw blades - all of which are manufactured to Leitz’s high quality standards, and Leitz Tooling’s sharpening services can even save customers money instantly by getting more use out of previously ‘throw away’ saw blades. Second fix joiner Martin Franklin said, “After using Leitz portable saw blades I will never go back to buying from a high street DIY store. Not only do you get a fantastic cut but they are comparable in price and some are even cheaper. I used to throw my

saws away after use but with Leitz saw service you get the same life and cut quality back, time and time again.” At the other end of the scale, leading building interiors manufacturer Grant Westfield produces 4,000 – 5,000 domestic shower panels per week in 9mm plywood, laminated both sides and PVA glue bonded. Cutting five stacked boards at a time, their production line saw blades needed to be changed every 300 to 400 boards, but a trial with Leitz Tooling had saw blades lasting up to a recorded 1,358 boards before a change was needed. Grant Westfield machine shop foreman Grant Finlay said, “Leitz was talking numbers and performance for saw blades which we didn’t think possible, so we gave it a try. Previously our old blades lasted between 300 and 400 boards which means we were changing blades two or three times each shift. With Leitz’s Razor-Cut saw blades, one blade will last for two shifts; the saving in down time alone is impressive.” Mr. Finlay continued, “It’s a no brainer, the new blades are far superior. These saw blades might cost more but the savings far outweigh the price. We were spending much more on ‘cheaper’ saw blades before we made the switch. The difference between the old saw blades and Leitz is like night and day. We’re now on a further four sets and have not looked back.”

Energy efficient motors also contribute to economic power consumption throughout the range. Models are equipped as standard with Itools which deflect the chips away from the tool cutting edge and dispose of them at a pick-up rate of over 97%, even at low extraction speeds. The I-system markedly improves not only process reliability, the working environment and productivity, but also reduces energy costs used for extraction. "Extraction costs can be reduced by up to 20% with the valve control system which only switches extraction on for operational units. HOMAG’s I-tool system dramatically reduces the necessary dust

Make it your own Simon continues, “The Ambition 2200 range includes models for fast thin tape edging, for thicker coiled tapes up to 3mm, for solid wood strip application up to 20mm and combinations of each. Sizing and Edgebanding with the HOMAG Optimat KFL 525 and 526 For double-sided edgebanding, the HOMAG Optimat KFL 525 and 526 offer economical production of larger batches, with a choice of sizing, gluing and trimming functions to suit every requirement. The new closed design offers not only cost advantages but also improved quality, safety and noise reduction too. HOMAG’s double sided edgebanders are available as first pass machines (Optimat KFL 525 for longitudinal edging) and second pass machines (Optimat KFL 526 for cross wise edging). They can be used independently of each other or in line for high speed sizing and edging. The Optimat KFL 526 can also be equipped to work as a stand-alone machine for first and second pass work. HOMAG KFL 525 and 526 models can be specified completely from scratch so customers can create their own edgebander and have it built to suit their exact requirements. Models are available for all kinds of edging material from 0.4mm to 3mm for the panel processing industry all the way through to 25mm solid timber for the door market.

For additional efficiency, various feeding and stacking systems are available from The HOMAG Group. These seamlessly link in with the edgebanders and fully automate the edgebanding cell.

HOMAG KFL 350 Flexline - Industrial production in batch size one The HOMAG KFL 350 Flexline edgebanding cell enables rapid changeover between set ups on the run – machine settings are amended accurately ‘in the gap’. The machine can adjust itself without stopping the track, choosing the appropriate program, settings, tape type and even the bonding technique for the next panel. Using a barcode system, Flexline can determine whether the edge of the next component will be applied using the laserTec method or with conventional hotmelt glue. It also automatically selects which units within the machine are required to complete the process. Designed specifically for producing literally ‘panel by panel’, the KFL 350 allows a gap between work pieces of 400mm at a feed rate of 30m/min. The real beauty of the HOMAG Flexline, however, is users can produce on a ‘make to order’ basis without being penalised by the usual machine stoppages. On conventional machines,

See our website and interactive magazine www.p-j-production.com

these stoppages are necessary to allow the track to empty before making the change to the next tape colour or program setting. Flexline can be operated by one person alone, making this a very efficient part of the production process. The operator can randomly feed the automatic infeed system with panels of any size, colour or tape thickness and Flexline does the rest, panel after panel, without any stoppages. HOMAG Flexline allows users to take on orders that previously would have often been turned away due to their complicated nature and produce them effectively and efficiently.

The HOMAG Edge The true benefits of investing in HOMAG equipment can be seen not only in the life-time cost advantages of the machinery, but also in being in partnership with the global leader in woodworking machinery. Alongside ground-breaking technology you benefit from integrated software, first class training and service support second to none. Katell's Manufacturing Director, Stuart Bailey, always keen to improve quality and update their production machinery, realised a new edge bander was required, and because of a long term relationship

Example of a Katell fire surround

with SCM UK's North East Distributor, G & J Wood Machinery, contacted Graeme Foster to discuss Katell's requirements. Stuart Bailey subsequently ordered an SCM K260 Evo Edge Bander from G & J. The K260 Evo Edge Bander is a compact machine but fitted with many of the features employed on much larger

machines, one of which is the RT-V infeed panel edge trimming group that has two contra-rotating cutterblocks that plane any imperfections from the panel edges and thus provides an excellent surface before edge gluing with hot melt adhesive. This unit is followed by edge banding application of both rollfeed materials, including melamine, PVC and ABS, and strips of laminate and solid wood lippings up to 6mm thickness on panels from 8 to 60mm thickness at a feed speed of 9 metres/minute. The K-2 end trimming unit follows, always giving a perfect cut, with the 2 independent motors sliding on prismatic guideways. The unit provides rapid set-up between straight and angular cutting with the automatic tilting device and it can also radius corners. A top and bottom edge trimming and finishing group, R-K, follows with rapid changeover between straight and radius finishing with pneumatic positioning and fast adjustments with mechanical readouts. For top quality finishing of all applied edges, a glue scraping unit is followed by a buffing unit to remove any sharp edges

Invisible Joints for all with BRANDT airTec Technology Representing quality, premium value and a modern look, the ‘invisible joint’ is the latest market trend for edgebanding. To meet demand, BRANDT once again led the market by developing a solution which means this feature is available not only to industrial companies, but also to smaller manufacturers. Simon Brooks, sales and marketing director of HOMAG UK explains, “Until recently, the ‘invisible joint’ effect was only achievable for larger producers using high end technology such as HOMAG’s laserTec. “The experts at BRANDT have developed a revolutionary edgebanding solution to give even the smallest workshops the ability to reproduce industrial ‘invisible joint’ quality in the form of airTec.” The process starts when a commercially available coextruded edging tape, is heated by compressed air (between 270°C and 320°C) as it goes through the machine. This heat activates molecular bonding

between the panel and edging material as they are pressed together and produces outstanding results. “When equipped with airTec technology,” adds Simon, “the machine can still offer edgebanding via glue pot with roller. The changeover between the two methods takes very little time so that responding to customer demands is quick and easy. “A simple technique, airTec can be easily adapted to suit different panel thicknesses and is therefore a flexible and cost effective solution to most edging needs.” BRANDT airTec is available on all 14001800 series edgebanders. In addition, retrofitting to existing models may be possible following an inspection from a HOMAG engineer.

Open House Success The airTec solution is a major step forward for the HOMAG Group, bringing seamless edge technology within the reach of the majority rather than the

minority. This was clearly evident at last October’s HOMAG UK Open House, where interest in airTec was high. Simon Brooks comments, “We had a lot of innovations on show at the Open House in Castle Donington, but the technology that really caught people’s eye was BRANDT’s airTec. Customers were amazed at the quality and finish of the edging achieved using the airTec system. It is clearly an affordable ‘invisible joint’ technology that will help manufacturers of all sizes to reliably produce first class results at competitive price points.”

PROFILE A Biesse Customer Testimonial Specialising in interior fit-out and retail display, Alan Nuttall Ltd is a company synonymous with design, quality and innovation. With almost 1 million square feet of dedicated production and logistics space, Nuttall’s design, manufacture and install interiors and display equipment for all areas of food service, retail, leisure, commercial, education and healthcare. Offering unique in-house testing facilities and extensive prototyping resources, they remain at the forefront of new product development, whilst providing tailored solutions built to their clients’ specification. Whether requiring retail shop fitting, fresh food display, foodservice counters, signage and point of sale, or a principal contracting service for any commercial interior fit-out, Alan Nuttall Ltd offers complete turnkey solutions for projects, large or small. “The Rover C Edge was purchased to help our drive for efficiency,” said Nino Calandra, Managing Director of Alan Nuttall Limited. “We are now manufacturing reasonable volumes of circular and curved panels which used to be a three man operation, one to cut the panel and two to operate the hand fed edgebander. Thanks to the Rover C Edge, we can now complete both operations on one machine with one person and with one machine footprint, saving valuable floor space which further improves efficiency to allow for other processes”. In terms of tangible benefits, Nino goes on to explain that “we had a ‘bottleneck’ with

the (then) beam saw and knew we could resolve this with a new saw and

board storage system. However, we visited Biesse in Italy and saw the Rover C Edge and believed this machine would provide a more significant contribution to efficiency in the short term, so we decided to purchase this first. We did in fact, subsequently purchase the board storage system [WinStore] and a beam saw which has underpinned our decision making process to increase efficiency throughout the wood mill operation”. The ethos which runs through Nuttall’s is definitely one of quality and care and is something Nino feels passionately about. “This company is all about people. We invest in machines and technology to make ourselves more competitive, especially against the threat from Eastern Europe where labour costs are really low. Most companies’ response to that threat would be to cut headcount, whereas ours is to invest, to achieve greater efficiencies whilst growing our workforce both in terms of numbers and skills.” “Biesse have also helped our material efficiency with the addition of the WinStore board storage system and we can now utilise more of our material and reduce wastage which also helps to

increase efficiency and hone our competitive edge”. “Our emphasis is on remaining competitive and maintaining market position. We’re not about market prices,

Chairman Alan Nuttall and MD Nino Calandra

we’re all about service and quality and to maintain our market position you have to believe and demonstrate excellence.” So how does Nuttall’s relationship with Biesse contribute to their success? “Our customers are top ‘blue chip’ organisations and they need to feel and be ‘loved’. It’s therefore vitally important to send out the right message that we’re investing heavily to maintain our current cost base. In dealing with Biesse, we know our customers will experience the benefits of our progressive business style to invest in not only ours, but their futures”. “We chose Biesse due to the combination of machines they make, which is impressive”.

INSTALLATION Kündig Sander Installed at James Burleigh James Burleigh is a London based furniture designer and manufacturer specialising in high quality tables and benches. The focus since the brand was launched in 2002 has been to create functional, aesthetically pleasing and sustainable products. The range of tables and benches is distinctive, with hardwood edges capped by laminate, and the furniture is available in an extensive array of colours with various leg options and a choice of height and width span: up to 3 m plus wide. The tables have been supplied for use in bars, boardrooms, break-out spaces, museums, offices, restaurants, schools and universities. Six months ago, the company invested in a Kündig Premium-2 1100-RP two-headed sander purchased from Kündig Ltd’s appointed regional distributor, A12 Machinery of Essex. Production manager, Nick Robinson, explained: “Our work is getting more and more demanding, orders are coming in thick and fast and we seemed to be doing a lot of wooden legs for tables: hundreds of them. We thought we needed to get a sander to speed up the process. We had been sanding by hand and it was taking forever, and we thought, ‘Let’s invest in a wide-belt sander to speed up the process’, which it has done.” Company owner and designer, James Burleigh, proceeded to research the options available. Although in his 15 years in the industry Nick had previously had no direct experience of wide-belt sanding, having always used a hand sander, he and his colleagues were already familiar with the Kündig name from

other workshops. Further opportunities to see Kündig sanders in action came during the purchasing process. Nick says: “Albert Holland of A12 would put us forward to go and visit one of his previous customers: we would pop along and take a look at the machine in operation. Actually seeing them in real life lets you get a proper view on how big they are and how they work. Space was another key thing, we couldn’t have a sander that was too big, but the Premium was just right for the available space.” The Kündig range proved to have a number of advantages. “We looked at other machines and felt that Kündig had the edge on build quality. The belts are hand stitched in Switzerland by two guys, and this allows you to use the belt either way round: you don’t have to follow a direction depending on the stitching. We were impressed with that, and generally the ease of operation and the fact that the sander has a fixed table, a solid construction and a simple control panel as well,” says Nick. The Kündig Premium sander has brought a number of advantages, in particular speed. “It is one man operation,” says Nick: “it has an automatic feeding table, meaning that one person can sand 400 to 500 table legs on their own. With other machines you need one guy at the front end to feed in and one at the back end to remove the workpiece. The Premium feeds itself, meaning that you can run round and put the finished work piece on a trolley: this is what we like. “The quality is very good. We chose to go for the two belt sander, so you can have two different grits on at the same time, effectively

James Burleigh is really happy with his Kündig Premium wide belt sander – “It saves times – lots of time”

carrying out two processes in one hit: for example, a 120 grit process followed by a 180 grit process all done in one. This is another time saving factor. Otherwise, you would have to do one belt, change the belt and then send the workpiece through again.” At the moment, the sander is mainly used for legs and solid wood work for table frames and bar work. Nick feels that the sander is not yet being used to capacity and that if it was, it would save even more time. He says, “Although I have never actually used a wide belt sander before, I have known people who use them in veneer and panel work, and this shows that we can expand its use at a later stage.” He adds that the sander is also perfect for calibrating panels down to the right thickness. Asked if he would recommend it, Nick replied, “Yes, I would,” adding that the company is really happy with its Kündig Premium wide-belt sander, especially for its speed of operation. “The reason we got it was to save time: it has saved a lot of time!” he concludes.

A Valley Welcome for Viet Sander Improved product quality and greater efficiency are benefitting Valley Joinery after it picked a Viet S211 artisan wide belt sander. Sitting at his desk in the joinery office in Baldock, managing director William Graham picked up a thick file crammed full of technical specifications from numerous sanding machine suppliers. “It’s such a big market out there that it can be a real problem deciding just which sander to buy,” he said. Whilst checking out the many options he discovered that T.M. Machinery, who had supplied his Striebig Evolution vertical panel saw, now distribute the Viet range of artisan sanders. “As the saw was one of our best buys and we are very happy with the good level of service we receive from T.M., who maintain all our machines, I went to see them about a sander and was pleased with what I saw,” said Mr Graham.” The versatile Viet S211 entry level sander it bought replaced a single belt sander that had reached the end of its working life. Featuring twin belts with two rollers and a pad for added flexibility, it’s used on both softwoods and hardwoods to finish off doors, unassembled frames, architraves, veneered boards and the many joinery items produced, in thicknesses ranging

from 5mm to 57mm. “We get a better and far quicker finish with the Viet,” said Mr Graham. “Before everything had to go through the sander twice and we often had to do some bench work to take out any cross grain. The Viet eliminates this extra work. Only one pass is needed and the components are ready to go to the paint shop to be primed, which saves us a great deal of time and effort.”

He likes the design and solid construction of the Italian-made sander. “The oscillalating system is very good, it’s so quiet when in use you hardly know it’s running and the extraction is very efficient. As the calibration system is straightforward and it’s so quick and easy to change the belts, all the lads in the workshop are happy with it. It was a great buy.” The S211 model is the smallest in the Viet artisan range, offering top sanding quality at an affordable price. It has a powerful motor and comes with a range of options to make it suitable for a wide range of applications. Valley Joinery makes everything from windows and doors to stairs and domestic furniture. It has been in business for 16 years and has 12 employees. Amongst many prestige contracts it supplied doors and frames, door sets, a staircase and entrance lobby furniture for the main contractors carrying out a major refurbishment project at Kensington Palace, London.

WOODWASTE Cleaner, Safer, Money Saving - Triple Payoff from New Wood Waste Control Dust Extraction System A London door and window manufacturer’s new factory is cleaner, safer and cheaper to run, thanks to a new dust and wood waste extraction and processing system from Wood Waste Control (Engineering) Ltd. Timbawood Ltd is a specialist in the manufacture of traditional timber windows and doors all across the South East of England. The company employs 28 workers and recently moved into a new industrial unit in Feltham, West London, to enable it to continue to expand. However its existing dust extraction system could not cope with the increasing production and issues included a dusty factory with slippery floors and blocked filters in the spray booth. Furthermore, all the machines had to be shut down two or three times each day while filter bags were being changed. Managing director Ian Selby said: “We were disposing of our factory waste into landfill, a costly method of disposal which was bad for the environment - both globally and also locally with neighbours.” Wood Waste Control was selected from three possible suppliers. “They surveyed and designed, manufactured and installed all as planned with little interruption to the production of the factory,” said Ian. Wood Waste Control is one of the UK’s leading dust extraction specialists. Based in Bourne End near High Wycombe it has hundreds of successful installations across the UK, in Europe, Russia and Africa. Managing director Reg Gareppo said: “To handle the 7500cfm waste requirement we provided a dust extraction system comprising our WFS-13-1.5J modular filter unit, rotary valve discharge, twin regeneration fans and an extract fan plus ducting. “In addition we installed a Reinbold RB100 full size briquetter which transforms the waste into briquettes for fuel.” Ian Selby said: “We give away the briquettes to local residents who have invested in wood burners for heating. Since the system was installed Wood Waste Control has also fitted a carousel bagging system which automatically fills the bags with briquettes, as an extra item

to save further human handling. “In addition, we have contracted the Wood Waste Control team to fit an air return duct to the extraction system to return expelled warm air back into the factory to increase the working temperature.” He concluded: “The factory is now

more efficient, cleaner, and safer - and we have reduced our waste and handling costs by more than the monthly cost of the machines.” For further information: Tel: 01628 525290 Email: info@woodwastecontrol.co.uk

WOODWASTE The Time is Right to be Greener and Leaner A Norwich shop fitting company has embarked on a greener and leaner path by purchasing a wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology. Norwich based Vincents (Shopfitters) Limited is one of the UK's leading shopfitting companies. Over the last 30 years it has built up an enviable reputation for excellent craftsmanship and attention to detail. In April 2013 the gas and oil heaters in Vincent’s 12,000 square foot workshop broke down. As quotes to repair the heaters seemed extortionate, the company decided to investigate alternatives to traditional heating that could utilise some of the waste wood generated from manufacture. After some research, Vincents decided to purchase a WT15 wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology, which was installed last month by Wood Waste Technology’s professional team. Steve Wigney, Finance Manager at Vincents explains: “The purchase of the wood waste heater is the best thing we’ve done for years. We should have bought one ages ago. It’s amazing how much heat is generated. We’ve now got 17 very warm,

happy staff. In fact, everyone says they wish they could have such a heater at home! As Finance Manager, I’m especially pleased that we no longer need to spend £500 a month on oil for heating and can start saving around £700 a month on skip costs. As a result, we should see a return on our investment in less than 12 months.” Wood Waste Technology’s Managing Director, Kurt Cockroft says, “Vincents has shown how much a business can benefit by replacing traditional heating with biomass technology. There’s never been a better time for businesses to start saving money on heating and waste disposal, and a phone call is all it takes to find out more.” Wood Waste Technology’s years of expertise in wood waste solutions have helped many companies reduce their waste disposal and heating costs. As well as offering site survey, design, manufacture, installation and on-going maintenance for new units, the company also services all types of wood waste heaters and supplies genuine spares up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers. In addition, Wood Waste Technology is

WOODWASTE Done and Dusted at LS Laminating Leading dust extraction engineers, Dust Control Systems (DCS), have recently installed a space-saving, highefficiency filter plant for specialist laminated timber manufacturer, LS Laminating Ltd. Based in Middlesbrough, on Teesside, LS Laminating Ltd specialises in the manufacture of laminated timber sections for use in the production of staircase components such as newel posts, strings and hand rails. Working with both whitewoods and redwoods the factory produces uniform sections which are made by gluing together, under high pressure, accurately machined lamellas of timber. A cost-effective alternative to solid wood, laminated timber is stronger, more stable, and less likely to shrink or swell after installation. With the capability of producing up to 100 cubic metres of laminated sections per

week, in all lengths, LS Laminating has established itself as a quality supplier to leading stair makers and national timber products distributors. The firm’s well equipped factory carries a large stockholding of timber and includes both flat and upright presses, radio frequency (RF) adhesive gluing system and a highperformance 6-head moulding machine. All timber is dressed prior to pressing and then DCS extraction system maintains a dust-free sanding environment at LS Laminating. sanded using a Boere TKKS 900 triple wide-belt sander. Since the sander the company, explains: “The Boere sander was first installed, extraction had been is the single biggest generator of dust in the provided by a dust collection unit which plant and, as production levels increased, had to be manually emptied on an our existing extraction unit was struggling increasingly regular basis. to cope. Apart from the constant chore of Paul Pearson, the director who heads up emptying the bags, the unit’s efficiency no longer met the standards required. But, most importantly, it was crucial for us to maintain a dust-free environment for the RF adhesive setting process, as well as for the health and wellbeing of our production team.” LS Laminating contracted DCS to replace the old system with an externally located filter plant and fansets, together with a new ductwork system. The new plant consists of an ATEX approved 9,100m3/hr modular filter unit complete with rotary valve. Collected woodwaste is discharged ‘pressure-free’ into a waste transfer system which feeds the material directly into a box cart. The DCS filter is fitted with highperformance ‘Superbag’ polyester filter bags and with low-noise, reverse air fan units which maximise filter cleaning efficiency. Says Paul Pearson: “DCS were able to meet all our requirements, by installing the filter and fans outdoors in very limited yard space. And, we now have an extremely efficient system of extraction for the sander which operates on a continuous basis without the need for any attention.”
