L’Aveyron – The Region It is the countryside of the Aveyron that best defines its character - not mountainous yet never flat, with deep green valleys falling between forested hillsides hiding rivers and villages unchanged with the centuries. The Aveyron department is the most north-easterly of the departments within the Midi-Pyrenees region and is home to ten of the listed "most beauBful villages of France", the highest number for any single department in the country. La Glycine is situated in a hamlet called Lagarrigue and the nearest villages are La Fouillade (3km) and Najac (5km). There is an Intermarche, fromagerie, chemist and fantasBc boulangerie at La Fouillade. The largest main town is Villefranche-de-Rouergue which is about 9km from Lagarrigue. Najac is one of the most beauBful villages of France and is an unusual village in that it has just one main street running along the top of a ridge, and is towered over by the Najac fortress at the highest point on the ridge where there are fine views over the Aveyron countryside. In addiBon to Najac places worth visiBng are St Antonin Noble Val (great Sunday morning market), St Cirq Lapopie, Belcastel, Conques, Peyrusse-le-Roc, Cordes sur Ciel, Villefranche de Rouergue with many having weekday, Saturday and Sunday markets.). There are good local restaurants nearby in St Andre de Najac, Najac, Villefranche and Cordes sur Ciel amongst others. It is worth visiBng the Tourist InformaBon office in the high street in Najac to find out what is going on locally during your stay as there are many fesBvals taking place during the summer months. The river Aveyron offers fantasBc canoeing and canoes can be hired down by the river close to Najac (go out of Najac down the hill and first turning on your lee before the bridge is a campsite, carry on through and the canoe hire is just beyond this).
