INSTALLATION Greda Diva For David Scott Daltons Wadkin provide CNC Technology for Yorkshire Pattern Makers Specialist pattern makers to the oil industry David Scott and Company Limited of Huddersfield approached Daltons Wadkin in order to increase their CNC machining capacity and to update their production methods. Resulting from this Alex Dalton arranged a meeting with proprietor David Scott during which the unique space efficient 5axis technology of the Greda Diva was highlighted together with the machine’s comparatively large Z-axis capacity. In spite of its performance and capability the Greda Diva occupies no more than 9 square metres of floor space. Mr Scott already has a machine shop containing many conventional as well as CNC machines including existing Wadkin models and this factor together with their Huddersfield location which is comparatively close to Daltons Wadkin’s home base in Nottingham contributed to Mr Scott’s decision to place the order.
The company’s principal clients are manufacturers of pumps for the oil industry, a fairly unique application but one which requires David Scott to have the technology and production methods to meet fluctuations in demand which can at times be difficult to meet. Alex Dalton commented “We are delighted to have the opportunity of placing our first Greda Diva with another locally based family business. This is a high quality and very versatile CNC machine which ticks all the boxes for a manufacturer like David Scott. We managed to arrange for Greda engineers to install the machine in company with our own engineering team and the purchase has already had a substantial and beneficial influence on their business.”

INSTALLATION NEWS Refurbished Striebig Makes Its Mark at Engravers because of the safety and space-saving advantages. Mr Excell talked to eight possible suppliers about machine capabilities and prices as well as training and after sales service, before coming up with a shortlist of three. This included T.M. Machinery Sales, sole UK agents for Striebig, whose subsidiary company T.M. Services refurbishes and services the Swiss–made saws. “After liking what I had read and heard about T.M. I went along to see a Striebig in action at a local company and had a useful discussion with the saw’s operator,” said Mr Excell. This clinched the decision to buy a fiveyear-old Striebig Compact 4164, which T.M. Services had stripped down and totally refurbished so that it looked and performed as if it was brand new. “I had no objection to buying a used machine as long as I knew it had been totally factory refurbished,” said Mr Excell. “The Compact matched all the criteria we had set for size, capabilities - it can handle the largest panels we use - and price. “It was by far the most cost-effective machine we looked at for the type and amount of work we wanted it to do, and with its totally enclosed blade it’s as safe to use as a saw can possibly be.” Said T.M. Services’ director Matt Pearce: “We only supply second-hand Striebig machines that we are sure will give many more years reliable service. “All machines undergo a comprehensive refurbishment with older machine being completely stripped down so that all bearings and other parts subject to wear can be replaced. Our confidence in our The Striebig Compact cuts a 10mm thick panel at James Wilson (Engravers) refurbished
In today’s challenging economic climate buying a used rather than a new machine can sometimes be a sensible move. This was the case when a firm of specialist engravers chose a five-year-old refurbished Striebig vertical panel saw, supplied by the manufacturer’s sole UK agent. James Wilson (Engravers), trading as Matt Black Systems, carries out general industrial engraving, specialising in the production of engraved panels used widely in aerospace control systems. When a fire in an adjacent business unit caused extensive smoke damage to its premises in Poole, Dorset two years ago, the company took the opportunity to upgrade its existing machinery, which included a flat bed circular saw. Explained engraving shop manager Roger Excell: “The saw was not very safety friendly because of its exposed blade. As well as needing to improve our Health & Safety, the saw’s small table was not conducive for cutting large panels.” For example, it needed three men to manoeuvre a 20mm thick 2 x 1m panel onto the saw’s bed and hold it firmly in place whilst sawing off small pieces. Tasked with investigating possible alternatives Mr Excell began by carrying out on-line research. By this time it had been decided to switch to a vertical panel saw

machinery is backed up by a six-month parts and labour warranty.” Installed in September 2011, the Compact cuts Perspex, laminate and aluminium panels ranging from 1mm to 20mm thick. It’s used mainly to form small pieces from 150mm sq up to 300 x 200mm, with up to a dozen pieces produced at a time. These go to a CNC mill for machining, then to the paint shop and on to the engraving department. The saw also sizes the occasional MDF panel and piece of solid timber. “We have become more efficient as it’s now a one-man job to size even the largest panel, releasing staff to do other jobs,” said Mr Excell. “The Striebig is an extremely robustly made saw with a powerful motor and frame which is rock solid when in use and delivers a clean, accurate and true cut every time, whatever the sheet material.” The space released by replacing the flat bed saw has been used to house a second CNC milling machine. With the saw T.M also supplied and installed an AL-KO twin-bag AAS 2000 mobile dust extractor unit. This reduces the amount of dust in the air during sawing to an absolute minimum. Striebig’s Compact 4164 is one of nine models in the Compact series with a cutting range from 3100 x 1644mm up to 5350 x 2200mm. An automatic feed series, the Compact AV, is also available. They are all based on a single, fully welded sawing frame to give decades of reliable service whilst maintaining cutting precision. The saws can be wall-mounted or freestanding. They can cut practically all wood-based sheet materials as well as timber, plaster board, plastics, composites and aluminium panels. They guarantee impressive dust limit values well below 1mg/m3.

TIMBERSEAL PS LOW VISCOSITY WOOD PENETRATION PRIMER TIMBERSEAL PS is a low viscosity, solvent free epoxy wood primer which penetrates into timber saturating it before curing. Its primary use is as a primer under other coatings but it can also be used for the restoration of old timber by the resin impregnation technique or in new construction as a pre-treatment for epoxy glued joints.
Low viscosity and slow cure promotes penetration into timber Natural tall (wood) oil in the hardener provides flexibility and compatibility with timber. Excellent adhesion to teak and even to damp wood, far greater than conventional primers. Economical, no more expensive than many conventional coatings. TIMBERSEAL PS is preferably applied to dry wood but will adhere well to damp timber. However a high moisture content will prevent TIMBERSEAL PS soaking into the wood. TIMBERSEAL PS has a pot life of 1.5 hours at 20oC but will remain fluid on a timber surface for several hours. The hardener contains a wood oil that gives TIMBERSEAL PS natural flexibility and toughness combined with the strength and durability of epoxy. APPLICATION TIMBERSEAL PS must be mixed This 2 metre diameter teak bath was primed thoroughly. Either mix all of the resin with all of the with Timberseal PS to ensure that the polyhardener or it you are unable to use all of the material urethane varnish had the best possible adwithin its pot life, weigh out resin and hardener in the hesion. proportions specified on the label. Ensure that the material is mixed well. TIMBERSEAL PS should be applied liberally by brush, roller or spray to clean timber that is free from oil or other contamination. In order to saturate the wood with resin it should be re-applied as it soaks into the timber. A Brilliant Hat Trick for TMJ Interiors Within two years of purchasing two sanders from Kündig, one for the veneer shop and one for the spray shop, top quality bespoke joinery manufacturer TMJ Interiors came back to Kündig to purchase a third sander, a Brilliant-2 1600 RC-d, in order to be able to sand and finish overwidth panels. This purchase was made in response to a particular contract, which required the use of larger than standard boards, and, says production director, Pat Coll, having the sander in place has undoubtedly assisted in winning other contracts: “If any other jobs come along requiring the finishing of wide boards, we are already set up for it.” The machine was delivered and commissioned over Easter 2009. Established in 1981 by James Taylor, TMJ Interiors is a leader in the specialist joinery and interior fit-out industry. With a work force in excess of 120, quality is of paramount importance to the company: “We always strive to use the latest technology, as this improves the final product, which is what we are all about,” commented Pat. Over the years, TMJ has been involved in many prestigious projects. Just a few of those listed on the company’s website are Nomura; Symantec; Microsoft MSN; Windsor Castle; St Edmundsbury
Cathedral; the Royal Festival Hall; and the Royal Shakespeare Theatre. All demand only the best in terms of quality of finish and workmanship, and this is what TMJ is always seeking to deliver. TMJ turned to Kündig when the need to finish overwidth panels arose: “because we’d got two other Kündig sanders and we were very happy with them.” The two sanders Pat refers to had been purchased as the result of a drive in 2007 to improve the calibration, pre sanding and finishing of both joinery based and panel based products. Pat had travelled to the Ligna show in Hannover, Germany, with company owner James Taylor to view and assess the relevant machinery. One of the stands visited was Kündig’s, which had on display a number of wide belt sanding machines, demonstrated by Stephan Kündig: these included three machines fitted with oblique as well as traditional sanding heads for calibration and for veneers. Following these demonstrations, a meeting was arranged for the following morning with a view to a more in depth discussion regarding TMJ’s actual requirements, and was followed by a visit in June 2007 to Kündig’s main manufacturing facility in Switzerland. Pat comments, “I went over to Switzerland and

looked at the machines running and the finishes were better than anything else I had seen: they were top quality, and that is what we are after.” Indeed, it was on the strength of this visit that the order was made in 2007 for not one machine, as originally was intended, but two: the first, the five head Kündig Botop Brilliant-X 1350 QREEd-R machine featuring oblique sanding heads was destined for the veneer shop, while the second, a Brilliant-2 1350 Cd+Ed lacquer sanding machine equipped with two oblique sanding heads, is in the spray shop. When the need arose to sand and finish panels wider than 1,350 mm, Pat says, TMJ had two options: hand finishing, which would be a time consuming process, or investing in a third sander specially designed to accommodate wider panels. Delighted with the finish that was being achieved on the two existing sanders, TMJ turned to Kündig UK for a recommendation. The advice received led to an order for the new Kündig Brilliant-2 1600 RC-d machine, supplied with a 18.5 kW (25 hp) motor to the first head, a second ‘Combi’ head with segmental pad (to cater for the occasional large veneered panel), 15 kW (20 hp), and an infeed table and outfeed table. As with all Kündig sanders, this is a fixed bed machine which allows the infeed and outfeed tables to give full support, regardless of the thickness of the workpiece being machined. The sanding group adjusts to the thickness of the material, offering a generous 200 mm working height. The standard specification on the Brilliant machine included electronic variable feed speed of 3-15 m/min, vacuum bed, not only a colour touch screen control but also with manual operating elements, all conveniently situated for operator ease of use. The contact roller lifts automatically when just the segmental pad is used to ensure safe passage of the panel through the machine. Operations managed from the

control panel include sanding head selection and infinitely variable stock removal. The Brilliant also offers Enormatic automatic setting of the working height over the width of the work piece, and the ECO energy saving mode ensures that the machine goes into a ‘standby phase’ when not in use and automatically switches off if not used over a set period of time. Over the past few years, the Kündig Brilliant-2 1600 has been invaluable for various projects: for example, KPMG, Man Group and Nomura. Completed in FSC Teak Veneer, the interior fit out of Nomura was the largest and fastest fit out of its time, covering
546,000 ft2 split over six floors and being completed in a period of just eight months. Work included wall panelling, doorsets, credenzas, AV walls, reception desks and coats cupboards: with such a tight timescale, complete reliability was essential, and here the Kündig sanders came into their own. The specialist joinery fit out of Man Group showcases TMJ Interiors’ excellent craftsmanship and quality and again, the Kündig sanders were vital to the delivery of this project. This fit out included a feature wall, wall panelling, a reception desk, banquette seating and a brain storming area as well as a bar.
KMPG’s “Project Gold” at Canary Wharf featured many specialist finishes and the quality of the finish provided by the Kündig sanders on a wide range of surfaces again played a key role. This project included doors, coat cupboards, a coffee bar area, a concierge desk, mobile desks, a reception area, a bar area and an executive dining room. All this is in addition to many high profile commercial and high end residential projects, that TMJ is unable to disclose due to client confidentiality. To ensure that all three machines keep working at a standard that produces the quality that TMJ demands, the company has an annual service contract with Kündig UK. To say that Pat is delighted with the standard of finish that the Kündig machines achieve is probably an understatement, as anyone who speaks to him will soon find out. When asked if he would recommend Kündig, his reply was, “Yes, and I probably have.” He continued, “We do have a good relationship with Carl and have been happy to take groups around our factory for tours and demonstrations.” For further information: Tel: 0845 833 0565 Email: info@kundig.co.uk www.kundig.co.uk

INSTALLATION NEWS AXYZ Router is Ace Performer on Plastic Materials A preferred routing, cutting and engraving solution in the general woodworking, joinery, panel processing and furniture production industries, the AXYZ 4008 router from AXYZ International has provided the perfect answer to the precise cutting of polycarbonate and aluminium sheets at Somerset-based Teklagraf. However, these are only two of a wide range of materials on which the router has performed successfully, including solid and particle woods, metals and various alloys. The AXYZ machine installed at the 3000 square feet facility incorporates a dual cutting head, camera registration system and the latest A2MC machine controller. Teklagraf director Don Towie commented: ‘The machine was purchased primarily for knife cutting polycarbonate and for routing small shapes in aluminium. Due to the camera registration system, shapes can be cut more quickly without having to align the material when placed on the routing table.’ The AXYZ 4008 has a processing area of 2,440mm (length) x 1,466mm (width). The router is supplied as standard with the A2MC machine controller that is said to offer the highest possible control capabilities by comparison with any similarly positioned system. It delivers much faster and smoother motion based on S-Curve (Seven Segment Velocity) trajectories, leading to a significant reduction in ‘bounce’ and vibration caused by sudden acceleration or deceleration that is often found with other control systems. The controller is also fully NC codecompatible and will therefore work with all popular CAD/CAM packages. For AXYZ router owners, the learning curve for the A2MC controller is made easier since the system functions in a similar fashion to the existing AMC controller. This allows a natural progression for AXYZ customers who want either upgrades or new machines. Furthermore, there are no limits to the size and complexity of the work that can now be

W12 REVIEW
W12 – “Could it get any better?” The quote in the headline was from first time exhibitors Curvomatic on a tweet from the show. It pretty much reflected the entire mood of the twin exhibitions Working with Wood and Working with Design. By the time the shows ended on Wednesday afternoon October 10 there were “Sold at W12” signs displayed on many stands. Exhibition Director Angela McGowan
reports that attendees maintained the strong showing from the previous exhibition and that with both Monday and Wednesday being busier than in previous years, the all important number of companies attending looks set to exceed expectations. Perhaps the most telling statistic about the reaction of exhibitors and the importance that they attach to the exhibitions is that 70% of the space for the
W14 exhibition has already been booked! W14 will take place at the NEC in the same halls 6, 7 and 8 from October 5 – 8, 2014. Overall both exhibitions gave an invaluable opportunity for the industry to meet face to face, to exchange ideas, share information and discuss future plans and opportunities. The overall mood by the end of the show…well it was definitely roll on W14!
DIMA Award Winners The theatre in the Working With Design area was the venue for the presentation of the Design in Manufacturing Awards (DIMA) at W12.
Curvomatic were unanimously awarded the winning award by the panel of judges. Five entrants were shortlisted with EDP and the Movac Group as runners up. The

The exhibition was the second opportunity for the company to show off its unique range of machinery since their acquisition of the Wadkin name and IPR in 2010. The demand for both their machine range and support services is according to director Francis Dalton increasing by the day and W12 was as he puts it “A great opportunity to not only re-establish the Wadkin name but also to highlight the presence of the Daltons Wadkin company and all that it represents to the woodworking industry. This involves machine manufacture, machine distribution and a whole range of support services including service and aftercare, training, transport, machine movement and installations and LEV testing.” Visitors to the stand would immediately have seen one result of the Daltons and Wadkin names coming together in the striking new colour scheme of green and white applied to all machines either manufactured or remanufactured in their Nottingham headquarters as well as Wadkin branded machines manufactured elsewhere in Europe. In addition some very important distribution agreements were highlighted. Amongst the additional machines represented were the Elcon Vertical Panel Saw range, Stenner Band Resaws, Kuper Planer/ Moulders, Salvador Automatic Crosscutting Systems and Kimla CNC Machining Centres. Working demonstrations have were made available to visitors on a number of these products and others powered up electronically to demonstrate the respective machines’ technology and capabilities.
Nimac Beam Saw
At the same time the company highlighted its comprehensive support services package which embraces a team of some 15 experienced engineers who travel the length of the UK, Ireland and overseas supporting service contracts and providing breakdown cover for an infinite variety of clients from one man joinery businesses to public authorities and even ministry departments. Daltons Wadkin had also this year taken an additional stand in order to show off another of their products, ie the Nimac range of Beam Saws. A Nimac Atlas 95 was displayed as an example from a comprehensive range of Beam Saws manufactured by the Nimac Group for which Daltons Wadkin are sole UK distributors. Also on hand, a technician from Nimac to support the products and provide a necessary link with the Daltons Wadkin sales team. Firm orders have already been placed with Daltons Wadkin for a number of major exhibits including a remanufactured Wadkin XE 6-Head Planing and Moulding Machine, a new
Wadkin PBR/HD Band Resaw and a Nimac Beam Saw. Strong interest has also been expressed in the Salvador Crosscutting Systems, the ‘new generation’ Kuper Planer/Moulders and in particular the unique Kimla CNC Routers.
A new and updated version of the popular PBR/HD Band Resaw - once again part of the Wadkin manufacturing programme.

W12 REVIEW SCM Group Enjoy a Very Good W12 with Many Orders and Enquiries Overall, SCM Group UK had a very good W12 exhibition, with many orders and enquiries received over the 4 open days on their stand that had a wide range of machines on display from SCM's Premium range. SCM's Trade Account Manager, Roger Gabb, commented "We were very busy on all 4 days with many customers visiting our stand to view the latest developments in the SCM range of Premium Division machines. Our demonstrators were always kept busy which in turn led to orders for CNC Machining Centres, Edge Banders, Planer Moulders and Classical machines, with several being delivered direct to customers from the stand after the show." The Pratix 'S' CNC Machining Centre was very popular, being an entry level CNC machine for the nesting of full size 8 x 4ft panels into component parts, and at a price that is very affordable and includes software for easy programming on the machine. Minimal floor space is required so the machine is excellent for manufacturers with a limited factory floor space. With 3 Edge Banders on display and running, the K260 EVO, K600 and S1000, several machines were sold as melamine tape, 3mm PVC/ABS and solid wood lippings were applied to show the excellent quality of finish obtained including corner rounding. On the K600, the RT-E panel edge trimming device provides a perfect edge to the panels before edge gluing, due to the use of the front copying devices that allows a constant removal of material over the entire panel length, maintaining the same work piece geometry, and also includes the ED-SYSTEM high efficiency exhaust hoods. The new Profiset 60 Planer Moulder demonstrated is designed to be very sturdy with up to 6 spindles available and has a generous 230 x 120mm capacity, with feed speeds of 6 / 12 or variable 4 -24 metres/min. The new feed system using Cardan joints and gearboxes is the technological heart of this machine providing higher productivity and an even
better finish to the timber. Distinctive features include pneumatic pressure on the feed rollers and the inverter for continuous speed control guaranteeing powerful, efficient and linear feeding. Profiset 60 is equipped with a prestraightening system through the reference engraver located on the bottom planer spindle. W12 Success for Team Weinig Malcolm Cuthbertson, MD of Weinig UK in Abingdon, was highly satisfied with the sales and record number of quality enquiries received on the stand at W12. The Rubik’s Cube drew by far the most number of customers, with non-stop demonstrations from start to finish. A record number of orders are expected when enquiries are followed up – additional to those placed at the exhibition. Other Weinig machines on the stand also attracted interest and orders – the advanced technology of the 3D profiling Powermat was an ‘eye opener’ to many moulder users opening up new business opportunities. Holz-Her products on show also impressed visitors by their advanced technology, innovative features and quality. The edgebander technology in particular, attracted a lot of attention. The unique Glu Jet System clearly distances Holz-Her from others with its outstanding benefits: no glue pot, high precision, takes only 3 minutes to heat up and colour changes in no time at all. Holz-Her’s other machines:

Movac "Stands Out" At W12 Exhibition, Birmingham NEC 7-10 October 2012 This year, W12 the national trade exhibition for furniture & joinery manufacturers, divided itself into two categories, Working with Wood plus a new category Working with Design held within a designated area specifically created for suppliers of design led materials and components for the industry. High technology coatings supplier Movac Group Limited stole this show this year exhibiting within the Working with Design area, with a show-stopper fashion show themed stand under the banner "Movac always at the forefront of colour fashion", and providing W12 with the "eXtra" factor! The stand comprised a central catwalk structure leading out of a circular entrance designed from an element of the Movac logo, onto the stage, using white minimalistic backdrops alongside the company's corporate red colour and bold fashion model images. The surrounding areas featured 7 striking mannequins coated in various Sayerlack finishes, including gold acrylic 2 pack lacquer, pink water based crackle lacquer and white gloss polyurethane together with clothes rails holding wooden coat hangers sprayed in various Sayerlack finishes with tags attached providing details of the particular coatings used, so that visitors could ‘browse’ through them at their leisure. A large ‘live video’ screen ran throughout the day, together with touch screens presenting the new website which also incorporates the fashion theme and images. Movac then provided an entertaining 10 minute fashion show twice a day, which never failed to draw appreciative visitors to the stand, with two models

sporting various wooden garments coated in our finishes, including tabard-style outfits, natural wood bangles and earrings using various Sayerlack stains and lacquers and unique wooden ties coated in various colours in Sayerlack topcoat and water based topcoat - all aided by wood and paint associated pop tunes and a fashion show commentary. Mark Smith, Movac's MD said: "Movac has always been at the cutting edge of innovation and our W12 stand portrayed this. We knew our unique design would be visually different to any other exhibitor's, it was created to help visitors easily visualise our wide range of innovative "must have" coatings & finishes and connect with their own individual aspirations. From the amount of interest and feedback we have received, this exceeded our expectations."

W12 REVIEW David Clouting Enjoys Successful Return to W12 David Clouting Ltd was pleased to see that the W12 exhibition had maintained its standards, with visitor numbers and their relevance to the company’s services providing a pleasing match. The business is now following up on the many contacts made at the event, which will require contact with nearly 250 individuals and companies. Edward Quant, David Clouting Commercial Director, said: ‘Our various different interior surfaces attracted a wide and varied audience. We were also delighted with the response from the shop fitting sector to Interior Film, which provides stunning designs and textures to cover all surfaces of interiors. Self-adhesive, fire rated, applied to most surfaces - it's the perfect product to decorate and fit out buildings, saving time.’ Interior Film can be easily fixed to the majority of substrates, allowing shop fitters to quickly transform any room setting. The selection of woods,
stones, leathers, metals and decorative designs can also be applied to furniture and fittings, providing further potential to create unique settings with the minimum of disruption. The response from visitors to W12 further endorsed the company’s enviable reputation for being at the forefront of innovation. ‘Texture is increasingly important and our Graphite and White solid colour with a new horizontal emboss was a star of the exhibition,’ said Mr Quant. Two recent introductions, Coimbra Ash and African Walnut, also attracted considerable interest, he continued. Coimbra Ash is matched to Egger’s Sand Lyon Ash H1298 and African Walnut is matched to Kronospan's African Walnut D8311. The new options are now being
introduced into the David Clouting stock range. ‘Paint - Innoface solid colours and High Gloss solid colours – are a key part of the KBB product selection, which David Clouting supports with a large number of stock colours. Mussel is being introduced in High Gloss to complement the Innoface pvc that was launched to match the Egger's U717 MFC,’ said Mr Quant. The feedback to two of the company’s stone PVCs was also described as ‘excellent’ by Mr Quant. These are high quality reproductions which provide panel manufacturers with effective natural materials. of the software as well as to integrate with their existing systems. Jim Wiltshire MD of MagiCut Software was pleased with the variety of customers attending the stand – including many from smaller workshops who had come to see Magi-Cut Express – many who took away the free Express trial CD. As well as potential new customers it was a pleasure meeting many of our existing customers who wanted to see what the new Modular Version 9 had to offer them and discuss upgrade options. There was also keen interest from visitors looking to integrate their existing design software (such as ArtiCAD) with Magi-Cut to provide seamless links to their saws and machine centres.

W12 REVIEW
Cojet - a Star is Born The revolutionary Cojet 2612 flatbed inkjet printer made its UK exhibition debut on the RW Machines stand at this year’s W12. This is technology that could ultimately change forever the way that decorative boards are used for cabinet furniture making or for custom interiors in kitchens, bedrooms, bathrooms or the shopfitting sector. This is high definition printing of anything from woodgrain images to complex graphic designs in a huge range of colours on flat wood based panels for fitted or three dimensional furniture making and including doors of any shape or size. CoJet not only prints with inks that are warranted UV stable for eight years, it can even reproduce texture on a surface to mimic the feel of real natural wood grains. Inkjet print heads will overprint an image using multiple passes to build a surface with real touch depth. The ability of CoJet to reproduce a woodgrain texture is superb; CoJet will also print to any material - even sheet metals, ceramics and glass; anything, in fact, that may be deployed in a decorative environment. Pop-up pin technology on the bed of the press enables simple repeat positioning of

work pieces, making the Cojet 2612 a serious production machine that is available through RW Machines Ltd. of Bicester who will be fully supporting CoJet for service, spares and inks via RW’s highly regarded team of service engineers.
Anderson Selexx Also shown for the first time at W12 was a full-size Anderson Selexx CNC nesting line with vacuum loading and including a squaring device on entry to position panels without operator intervention and with a scissor lift and pusher/destacker for completed panels. The speed of the Anderson Selexx working solely in conjunction with an edgebander could make a beam saw redundant in many situations, according to RW’s David Thompson Rowland.
Giben Edge A Giben Edge KS26J edge finishing automat was shown in support of a newly signed distribution deal with an Italian supplier better known for beam saws. The edgebander exhibit at W12 had been built especially for a UK customer to process 2mm edgebandings and had been equipped with flat and profile scrapers for a better Cojet + Ink Trays

W12 REVIEW Stema CB86 Also bearing the Stema label was their CB86 drilling and hinge insertion machine working from the underside of panels, drilling holes and inserting hinge plates. This machine from Stema can be configured to work with any hinge supplier just by changing the magazine and the pusher. It was equipped with three spindles for hinges and two for plates plus a chip extractor complete with dust collection bags. Spinamatic by the same maker was shown for gluing and dowelling and can be equipped with a choice of pumps for working in conjunction with a range of white adhesives.

finish. Simplicity of operation is a major feature of Giben Edge banding - the screen controller is designed for fast setup and easy machine operation and this edgebander is also unique in trapping all edge trimmings within the cabinet in support of a cleaner working environment.
Multipoint three-axis machine; the configuration on this year’s show was for face and edge boring panels with two independent groups of tools for dowelling and fittings instertion on shelves, windows and doors. Groups of tools can be configured to drill, route and insert as needed.
Edge finishing shaped panels has become big business for RW Machines, reports David Thompson Rowland, and two different capability options were fielded at W12. One was from Vitap - their Eclipse model at the lower end of the capability spectrum and Vector, developed in New Zealand, at the other. First seen at W10, Vitap’s easy-to-use Eclipse contour edgebander is now equipped with premilling.
Orma A new membrane press from Orma on the RW stand was designed for the application of decorative coverings to flat and curved panels. The Orma Air System Eco 25/14 press deploys one or two tables in a shuttle system and extra flanges can also adjust the chamber height for pressing curved panels with a maximum depth of 200mm. An intermediate flange can be used for high gloss work, guaranteeing uniform temperature without bubbles or wrinkles and improving the definition of finish across all PVC foils.

W12 REVIEW Both Vitap and Vector are designed to edge finish contoured panels, tracing the contour, applying an edgeband and cutting neatly on conclusion of the wrap. With Vector the operator need only position the panel for the head to find the edge automatically and then to complete the process. A patented system keeps the head pressed firmly against the edge of the panel, controlling both pressure and also speed to ensure a very tight bond. Vector will apply PP, acrylic, PVC, veneer and indeed almost any type of edge finish to the most commonly used wood based panels, including hollowcore. An unfilled hotmelt adhesive of good quality is recommended for contours, say Vector, most of which will be high value products carrying better margins.
Vitap Quartz Also from Vitap is their new Quartz, a small in-line edgebander with buffing units top and bottom. A glue joint and profile scraper unit was shown on the show machine with a trimmer and end cutter and also pre-milling for optimum edge quality. This is a highly cost-effective, small footprint edgebander designed for processing all types of finishing materials on small shop floors.

that is easily inserted into any production line; this electro-mechanical cabinet clamp adjusts automatically for both height and length using photoelectric cells. Bonachin’s Closer is adjustable for pressure and is the ultimate machine for high productivity and low operating costs.
Fisher+Ruckle - a new distribution deal for RW Machines Ltd. And lastly at W12, RW Machines announced a new agency agreement with Swiss veneer jointing and splicing specialists Fisher+Ruckle. MD Alexander Baptista said on the stand that a range of different machines will make their UK entry under the Omni label for low cost glue jointing and longitudenal splicing applications in smaller workshops. The stand machine is the first of several that will be available from the Bicester-based distributor; MD David Thompson Rowland said: “Omni represents a stable of very good machines that are designed to make veneer working simpler and more consistent.”

HOMAG City – Bright Lights and Action at W12 It was a hectic four days for the HOMAG UK team at W12. HOMAG City was buzzing with excitement as visitors were treated to live demonstrations of machinery and software. During the show the company achieved a staggering £1.7m worth of sales making it a huge success for HOMAG UK. “What a fantastic few days,” comments Simon Brooks, sales and marketing director of HOMAG UK. “We had a large number of visitors to our stands which not only generated sales but also many new business enquiries.”

“It came as no surprise that the next step, the WEEKE BHX 055, our compact yet versatile
Action packed stands “Although logistically a real challenge, we wanted as many machines as possible to be fully functional at W12 to allow customers to keep abreast of our technology advances. We had just four days to install 22 machines, but we completed the task and everything was good to go on Sunday morning. “The WEEKE Vantage 43M CNC machining centre was busy making pieces for a personalised rocking chair. We were offering these rocking chairs to visitors in return for a charity donation with the proceeds going to Menphys, a charity that supports children and young people with disabilities and their families. “Once the pieces were processed by the WEEKE they were sent to the brand new LIGMATECH VKS 200. This ingenious machine created boxes on demand in HOMAG branded packaging to parcel up the pieces. “We produced over 300 rocking chairs during the four day event, it was a huge success raising over £900 for the charity. This figure is a testimony to the quality of the WEEKE CNC machine, especially as it was only running in demonstration mode. “Another busy machine was the impressive HOMAG Venture 316. This CNC router was in action showcasing its

DRIVE5C five-axis routing spindle, one spindle that does the job of a whole array of traditional units including routing, profiling, drilling and sawing. Creating fruit bowls for visitors, the 316 demonstrated its versatility and productivity.
A make-to-order factory at HOMAG City “HOMAG City presented a fully functional make-to-order work cell at W12. Controlled by the Group’s latest innovation in woodworking software, eSolutions our operator was rushed off his feet every minute of the show with a continuous demand for demonstrations of how productive the programme is. “Our power duo HOLZMA and BARGSTEDT teamed up in this work cell showing how efficient the partnership of the HOLZMA HPP 350 saw and the BARGSTEDT TLF 210 automated board storage system is. By coupling these two machines together manufacturers can achieve maximum throughput from the saw whilst also keeping waste to a minimum.
CNC processing centre was one of the main attractions for our visitors. With throughput speeds that can match those of much larger machines in just a 5m2 footprint, the productivity and attractive price tag of this small, but perfectly formed workhorse never fails to amaze anyone who sees it in action. “The final two stations of the work cell included the BRANDT Ambition 1650 edgebander and LIGMATECH MPH 450 carcass clamp. Visitors were impressed by how easy it was to make an efficient, versatile and productive make-to-order factory using HOMAG Group equipment and the work cell was in non-stop demonstration mode.
The stars of the show “BRANDT’s latest innovation airTec also created a lot of attention. Showcased on the hugely popular 1440FC edgebander, the airTec technology creates invisible joints at cost-effective prices. Visitors were impressed by the results that airTec achieves and all the signs point towards this

new technology becoming incredibly successful. “Cefla, one of our industry partners, presented its new entry level, fully automated spraying machine, PRIMA - a UK premiere at the show. This machine is a step up from manual spraying and impressed small furniture producers with its ability to spray products at a faster rate and to a higher standard of finish. The PRIMA was sold at W12 and will be in production shortly. "Our long standing partner for pressing, JOOS presented a very robust 12 x 5 single
daylight press along with a glue spreader and knife table. This proved very popular and interesting for the joinery and veneering market.”
A huge success for the market leader HOMAG’s stands drew a lot of attention over the four days. BÜTFERING showed off its versatility for manufacturers of all sizes with the entry level, SWT 124 RC and the high spec SWT 325 QC for finish sanding and de-nibbing. HOMAG proved its expertise in
edgebanding with its laserTec technology producing invisible joints for the larger manufacturer and the Ambition 2264 which is a brand new edgebander that was sold at W12. WEEKE and HOLZMA had its fair share of interest at the show too. The WEEKE Venture 109M was on demonstration for the processing of kitchen doors and cabinets whilst the HOLZMA HPL 380 beamsaw with rear lift was linked to Magicut software for accurate optimisation and volume production. Once again HOMAG Group boasted the largest presence at the W12 exhibition. Their stands in hall 7 of the NEC in Birmingham included 22 machines all of which were fully functional making HOMAG City an impressive and informative stand to visit. “Overall, W12 was a great success for HOMAG UK. We exceeded our sales target and introduced new businesses to the world of HOMAG, one that doesn’t just cater for industry giants but has a huge variety of machines that suit manufacturers of all sizes,” concludes Simon.

W12 REVIEW CD (UK) Reports Solid Success at W12 Geoff Baker, co-founder and chairman of CD (UK) Ltd, confirms that the W12 exhibition was a resounding success for the company. As the UK distributor of DuPont™ Corian® solid surface materials and products, as well as being the exclusive distributor for several leading machinery manufacturers, W12 proved the ideal platform to showcase the company's portfolio of products and services. CD (UK) presented their wares on two separate stands: in the 'Working with Design' section, visitors were treated to an array of stunning products exemplifying the endless design possibilities that can be realised with Corian and, in the 'Working with Wood' halls, the company displayed a host of specialist machinery and tools for use in solid surface fabrication. Situated only a few steps apart, visitor traffic between the two stands was "greater than anticipated, and further justified our decision to exhibit in both areas”, said Mr Baker. Visitors to the 'Working with Wood' stand were able to explore the comprehensive range of professional tools for the solid surface and woodworking sectors that are distributed by CD (UK). press can form and shape all types of solid surface materials. However, the highlight of the machinery display was undoubtedly the demonstration of the newly-introduced solid surface through-feed sanding machine. Named ‘SolidSurfacer’, this unique and compact sander has been specially developed for solid surface material finishing. The multi-head machine is capable of bringing solid surface to an accurate calibrated thickness and sanding to a three grit 360/500 satin finish in a
single pass. Eric Whorne, who manages the Machinery Division, explains: “The ‘SolidSurfacer’ is an exciting new concept which dramatically reduces the time required to precisely finish solid surface materials. For example, a 3 metre long worktop can now be processed in one pass, and in under 60 seconds - compare this with around 45 minutes using conventional methods of finishing with handheld machine tools.” The ‘SolidSurfacer’ has a footprint of just 1370 x 1800mm and, with a working width of 950mm, it allows full sheets, worktop runs of any length, and individual pieces to be processed. Add to this the constructional benefits that calibrating solid surface to an accurate thickness provides in the final assembly stage, and the affordably-priced machine becomes an attractive proposition for solid surface fabricators. Mr Whorne adds: “Being able to run the ‘SolidSurfacer’ and demonstrate its unique qualities created lots of interest and we will be busy over the next few weeks following up a good number of solid enquiries.” For further information: Tel: 0113 201 2240 Email: info@cdukltd.co.uk www.cdukltd.co.uk

WOODWASTE Energy-Saving Extraction for Willerby Holiday Homes Willerby Holiday Homes, the Hull-based manufacturer of luxury holiday homes, has invested in a new energy-efficient dust extraction system which has been designed, supplied and installed by Dust Control Systems. Established just after the Second World War, Willerby is the UK's largest manufacturer of holiday homes and lodges, selling its extensive range across the UK and Europe. The company is at the forefront of holiday home design and manufacture, and is committed to the pursuit of environmental excellence at its award-winning, energy-efficient factory, which employs extensive recycling practices and waste reduction processes. The new dust extraction system comprises an externally-sited Schuko EcoVar 2030 modular chain filter which has a total airflow volume of 135,000m3/hour. Filter cleaning is carried out by a dual cleaning system which employs a cleaning fan housed at the top of the filter, and mechanical shaker system at the base. The energy-efficient system employs three 55kW direct-drive main fan units, which replace the previous three 75kW belt-driven fans, and extract from a total of 40 processing machines. The filter has rotary valve discharge into a 15kW fan-powered closed-loop waste transfer system which feeds waste directly into two large capacity boxcarts. The new filter plant replaced the enormous drag chain filter, which had been built on top of the factory’s

maintenance shop. DCS disconnected the old plant, in preparation for its removal, and installed three 710mm diameter main ducting runs from the new main fans to existing junctions within the factory. A key feature of the energy-saving installation is the ECOGATE® extraction-ondemand system, which constantly monitors the use of each individual processing machine and automatically regulates the speed of the relevant fan unit accordingly. The system employs an Ecogate greenBOX MASTER SRL controller, motorised gates and sensors at each machine, together with variable speed drives
for the three main fans. The required power requirement to each fan is determined by the opening and closing of the motorised gates, thereby only using the exact amount of power required and avoiding energy wastage. Willerby Holiday Homes contracted DCS to install the new system during the firm’s summer shut-down and Christian Wilson, Facilities Manager, says: “The project required a lot of detailed planning and DCS worked together with us from initial concept through to completion. They were confident from the outset that they could achieve installation and commissioning within the allotted timescale and that they could attain the levels of savings that they forecasted. I’m pleased to report that they scored highly on both counts; the transition from the old to the new system was almost seamless. And, our production people just love the new system – it’s far more efficient than the old plant, it’s much quieter, and it saves us a significant amount of expenditure on electricity.” DCS engineers conservatively predicted that the new system would save around £35,000 per year on energy usage, when compared to Willerby’s old dust plant. Following review of stored data carried out after one month’s operation, the annual savings prediction has now been adjusted up to £46,000. WHAT’S NEW Need Double Torsion Springs? That’s No Problem For William Hughes While some spring manufacturers struggle with the complex shape of double torsion springs, William Hughes has invested in the latest CNC technology machines to fully automate the production process. For many applications, double torsion springs perform better than single and as a result, they are widely used in the automotive industry. Typical applications include door handles, seat adjustment mechanisms and console lids. So when a manufacturer of seat and car interior parts needed a double torsion spring for the door handles of a popular small car, it approached William Hughes as one of its preferred suppliers. The application engineers at William Hughes used their knowledge and expertise to design the spring to meet the exacting specification of the car manufacturer, whilst ensuring that the spring would be easy to manufacture using its CNC machinery.
The spring is used inside the car to return the handle to its normal position and is specially designed to make assembly into the car mechanism easy. Despite the complex shape of the central section of the double torsion spring, very little tooling was required. By making the spring in two fully automated stages, the difficult central section was easily formed to provide a spring that is compact, cost effective and which encompasses the right performance characteristics and durability. The final stage of the process is to finish and protect the springs using an organic and environmentally friendly anti-corrosion paint containing zinc flake. William Hughes specialises in the design and manufacture of all types of compression, tension and torsion springs and bent wire components for automotive, aerospace and industrial applications. Stringent quality checks to ISO

Eco-Friendly Manual Coating With Automatic Quality! A window manufacturer sets standards in energy efficiency and environmental compatibility with his passive house windows. Since the company deploys a modern coating system, which thanks to its minimal overspray not only cares for the environment but also improves the surfaces quality, their performance is further enhanced. The passive house windows “thermoll” of window manufacturer Moll from Uttenweiler in Southern Germany sets benchmarks as to thermal transmittance value and air tightness. So it does not come as a surprise, that these innovate products are distributed successfully not only in Germany but throughout Europe. The company coats the window frames manually. A common problem with this process is the uneven application of the material caused by alternating (pump piston) stroke, which can lead to surface irregularities and splatters. Moll decided to test the new BINKS Raptor Air Assisted Airless package. It features an almost pulsation-free paint flow and creates a perfect finish. The experienced spray operators at Moll are familiar with every coating specification, viscosity and shade, and were therefore the

perfect people to put the new generation of BINKS equipment through its paces. The convincing benefit of the new BINKS MX pump is the absolute pulsationfree delivery of the paint coating. Thanks to an innovative magnetic detent the flow of spray mist continues uninterrupted whilst the pump changes strokes, unlike the conventional method involving mechanical switchover. Large areas are coated with critical colours and high viscosities in a high quality. Another advantage of the Binks MX AA4400M gun is the low overspray. At an inlet pressure of just 1.5 bar even highly viscous materials are optimally processed. “It did not take us long to see that the overspray has been reduced significantly”, explained the coaters at Moll and added: "After a short time we noticed material savings of up to 20%”. The Air Cap & Tip configuration of the Binks AA4400M spray gun ensures the especially fine atomization and flexible setting of the spray angle. Thereby it smoothly adapts to all colour variations and viscosities. "Thanks to the new magnetic switch of the BINKS Raptor MAX package, the quality of the surface has been considerably improved. Considering the reduced

overspray, the extended service life of the booth filters and the reduced coating consumption, it is realistic to estimate a savings potential of more than 20%!” Improved coating quality, reduced overspray and swift maintenance: Moll and his coaters are convinced, the investment in the new Raptor MAX has already paid dividends.

On page 107 the furniture manufacturer can find futuristic LED edgings for creating impressive lighting effects and Ostermann can of course deliver wholly natural products too –stylish solid wood edgings such as the attractive "Wave" and "Saw" finishes are available on page 147. An addition to its ABS edgings, Ostermann now supplies numerous extra finishes across its entire melamine range. True to the motto “When others call it a day – Ostermann is just getting going”, the melamine range will also continue to grow considerably in future. Page 118 contains numerous colours and patterns frequently delivered by Ostermann to match ABS finishes. The adhesive section has been seen some extensive product additions. The edging itself is as multi-faceted as the requirements for its application. It is precisely for these individualised applications that Ostermann is able to supply the right glue. Apart from wellestablished adhesive products, page 265 contains many special adhesives for a range of applications within the workshop.

enough for Ostermann to expand this section. This is where the specialist will not only find the right edging to match patterns from 32 of the leading wood materials manufacturers such as Egger, Polyrey or Finsa, but as of now customers are also given a corresponding page reference to the edging photo in the catalogue. This provides a direct, visual image and radically speeds up the search process. The variety of edging-finishes has also been expanded. The numerous links in this section, the listing of the finish number in the Cross Reference List and the use of the fold-out section in the front of the catalogue all combine to make it easier to find the right edgings and for those who prefer the online version... the finish for the required edging can be called up in Ostermann’s Online Shop along with a detailed image. Apart from edgings, the customer will also find correction pens and a further 38 manufacturers with edging references assigned to them. With the extensive catalogue containing information on all things concerning panel finishes, Ostermann, as the leading edging and profile specialist, is providing the furniture manufacturer with everything required for edging applications. The catalogue was automatically sent to Ostermann customers and potential customers in the first week of September. It will of course be delivered to anyone else who requests it. DECORATIVE SURFACES AND EDGINGS
Ostermann Believes - The Early Bird Catches The Worm This is where Ostermann, the expert in edging, is always at the front of the pack! The latest speciality in the product range is veneered oak edgings with woodworm and split wood look. For some years now a certain trend has become apparent whereby various surface treatments are implemented to give a used look to real wood parquet floorings and solid wood furniture. This second hand style is reflected in current trends such as "used look", "vintage style" or "shabby chic". These looks have their place in people’s romantic desire to have authenticity and tradition, as well as to have furniture with a strong character and outstanding individuality. Furniture from years gone by radiates charm and with interior designs incorporating furniture with an antique or aged appearance, the customer can be sure of being right up to date with the latest style.
patterns are again bringing more naturalness and genuine materials into furniture making. Even if modern digital print techniques can be combined with sophisticated embossing to create evermore perfect finishes – plastic cannot achieve the feel and warmth of real wood.
Ostermann expands its woodworm and split wood finishes into the veneered edging range These two oak edgings are truly something very special. These edgings can be used to create unique individual and collectors pieces. This option has
completely rejuvenated veneered furniture ranges. The aforementioned buzz words “used look”, “vintage style” and “shabby chic” have an important part to play in this context. The limits of the potential range of applications of these two distinctively structured solid wood edgings from Ostermann are yet to be determined. Carcass edgings with a suitable look and feel are required where, for example, solid fronts are used. The tradesman can also apply a paint or stain to veneered edgings, so as to fully exploit the range of effects. These edgings also perfectly complement plain coloured melamine surfaces. This
Genuine antique or remarkably realistic imitation? The trend was originally seen in flooring and has long been a feature among wood material manufacturers too. More and more new, distinctively structured surfaces, are available in veneer. Descriptive terms frequently encountered in the market include “rough cut”, “split wood” and “aged wood”. Wood material producers such as Decospan, Kaindl and Rohol offer 3D veneer with names such as "Brushed" and “Rough cut".
Back to nature with cutting-edge technology The natural surfaces of veneered panels are usually sandblasted to give them the desired structure. Artificially created woodworm holes, stress traces as well as fantasy structures can be created with a remarkably realistic look. Under the heading “designed by nature” these

Imaginative Designs RENOLIT reveals two modern abstract designs RENOLIT is proud to announce two quite individual and striking fantasy designs as new additions to the RENOLIT COVAREN stock range
RENOLIT COVAREN Cobra The new RENOLIT COVAREN Cobra is a fantasy design which picks up on the current trend towards irregular stripes and geometric patterns. The design is modern and contrasting, yet creates a very homely atmosphere depending on the colour combination used. It is most suitable for combinations with the three colours which feature within the printed design itself, namely greys, coffees and blues. For example mix with RENOLIT COVAREN Flint Grey Nat Trend or Lana Matt Grey, for a harmonious result. Try RENOLIT ALKORENMTO Putty for a trendy look or either RENOLIT ALKORENMTO Aqua or Wave Blue for striking contrast. The Cobra print in combination with Melinga emboss creates a highly attractive impression of depth and therefore follows the trend towards simple textures.
RENOLIT COVAREN Moulins The new Moulins design is reminiscent of a concrete structure with a subtle two colour square print. Given its very subtle printed design, the finish can also be used as a pseudo solid colour. The design is very much in trend and, with its neutral grey colour, is suitable for combinations with various plain colours. Depending on the combination of colours, the design can be multi functional in living areas, kitchens and bathrooms, or as an eye-catching feature in shops. It is printed in combination with a Soft Coat lacquer and subtle emboss creating a very delicate, highquality surface finish. Cobra and Moulins were introduced by RENOLIT into the global 3D stock range with a number of other exciting new
