INTRODUCTION
Welcome to the second edition of ‘The Way, the Truth & the Life’ Book 1. The great strength of this series is its simplicity and clarity. It is attractive, lively and appealing to both teachers and pupils. The Syllabus is based on the Religious Education Curriculum Directory and, therefore, the contents of the Teacher’s Book, Big Book and Pupil’s Work Book fulfil the requirements of the Bishops’ Conference for Religious Education in Catholic schools. The Teacher’s Book provides theological notes, stories, a large variety of activities, guidance on assessment and suggestions for questions on the Big Book. There is also a variety of supporting resources such as websites and songs. The very attractive Pupil’s Work Book should encourage children to take pride in their work and be able to share it with their families. This project is the fruit of wonderful collaboration and hard work of a number of teachers across the country. I thank them for the contribution they are making to curriculum development in Religious Education. I would also like to warmly thank Fr. Herbert Alphonso SJ for his involvement as theological adviser and for the encouragement and support he has given to all involved. I am confident that all who use this Teacher’s Book 1, the corresponding Big Book and Pupil’s Work Book will find them a direct, clear help in the important task of enabling their pupils to learn about the Catholic faith and to respond to its invitation with growing faith and love.

NOTES FOR USERS
This Teacher’s Book is accompanied by a Big Book and a Pupil’s Work Book and is based on the Key Stage 1 Syllabus. These resources cover all the essential content of the Religious Education Curriculum Directory of the Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales at an appropriate level for 5-6 year olds. The Syllabus incorporates two attainment targets: learning about the Catholic faith (AT1) and learning from Catholic faith (AT2). These are set out in the form of specific key learning objectives for each module and listed in the Teacher’s Book. There are Scripture texts and notes for Teachers at the beginning of each section based on the key learning objective. These are intended to enrich the teachers’ understanding of the content they are about to teach. The ‘Key Questions’ should be shared with the children at some point so that by the end of the session they will be able to answer them; this provides an assessment exercise. It is not intended that a key learning objective is covered in each lesson with all the accompanying activities. This may take several lessons and the teacher is free to select the most appropriate tasks for the class. Throughout the year, it is essential to make links between the content covered in religious education and other areas of learning as well as what is happening in the classroom and playground. When a lighted candle is used teachers should take the necessary precautions, such as, having a fire blanket at hand. For all practical activities, teachers should follow the school’s policy and guidance with regard to health and safety and are advised to check the suitability of websites listed in this book before recommending them to children.
