Weinig Partners Hofmann After extensive market research, Weinig UK has announced it has reached agreement with Hofmann, the long established German classical machine manufacturer, to represent them exclusively in the UK. In line with strategic plans to broaden the range of equipment available through its agent network, Weinig UK selected Hofmann as partner first and foremost because the quality of the products matched those of the Weinig brand. While Hofmann may not be a brand familiar to many in the UK, the company has been in existence since 1919, and in continental Europe Hofmann is one of the aspirational brands which users of classical machines appreciate as one of the best. ‘When it became known that Weinig UK was looking to expand its product portfolio with a range of classical machines, we had household name suppliers knocking on our door wanting to work with us’ says Weinig UK managing director Malcolm

Cuthbertson. ‘After detailed discussions and evaluation, we chose to partner Hofmann because of the many shared values between our brands – engineering quality, innovation, privately owned, focused on the long term future and committed to full life cycle support for equipment supplied.’ The wide range of equipment available through Weinig UK covers all levels of sophistication from entry level and mid-range to top of the range, and includes planers, thicknessers and combination machines as well as a comprehensive suite of spindle moulders. Weinig and Hofmann is a partnership that is designed to last and complement each other over the test of time. Contact Weinig UK on 01235 557600 to learn more about the Hofmann range.

INSTALLATION
Lambsons Add IMA BIMA to Production Facility Further progress with the planned component development strategy at Castleford based Lambson Laminates has seen the installation of an IMA BIMA furniture component processing centre in the new production facility. The new CNC processing centre has sizing, milling and PUR features with the straight or curved edgebanding facility designed to take up to 65mm edging tape and has the ability to produce seamless joints. Ideal for ‘one offs’ and batch production, the new kit is already producing kitchen worktops, office furniture, table tops and other components in a range of sheet materials, including Lambsons LammyLite lightweight product. With a 6m x 1.83m capacity the IMA BIMA now gives the company the ability to manufacture undermounted sink worktops, which compliments the new Lechner range of worktops marketed by Lambsons, and other HPL ranges supplied by leading manufacturers. Further developments have seen new software programmes also installed in the design studio, greatly enhancing Lambsons

EVENTS Tax window and positive economy set to drive machinery investment Two things have come together to suggest that you should be thinking about investing in new machinery for your joinery or furniture manufacturing business. With the government footing a good chunk of the cost, it’s an opportunity you should grab with both hands say the organisers of W14. 1. Sector upturn - The machinery you install is likely to be kept busy. Even the usually gloomy forecasters are seeing brighter times ahead. With a general recovery now finally underway the construction sector is bouncing back with growth of over 2% predicted for 2014, rising to 4.5% in 2015. Private Housing starts, driven by the
government’s Help to buy Scheme, are set to rise 15% this year followed by an average 9%pa until 2017. 2. Tax Window - The annual investment allowance has been increased from £25,000 to £250,000 (Yes that’s a tenfold increase!)… but only until December 2014. That means a huge cost reduction for those manufacturers buying any sort of machinery. Check with your accountant for specific details. At W14 next year you will be able to see and experience running machinery from all sectors of the market. Meeting experts from the major brands at the show is a great way to settle on the right investment for your company for over 30 years.
Our exhibitors love to demonstrate and tell you about the latest technology available to companies of all sizes. Their own investment in meeting and talking to their customers face to face shows a confidence in their product and brands. Use W14 to uprate your business for the upturn.

Boardcraft Rises Like a Phoenix For the team at St Neots based Boardcraft, one of the UK’s largest independent importers, suppliers and distributors of wood-based panel products, 2012 was not a good year. In March, one of the founding directors, Alan Medlow passed away leaving the staff devastated. Then on 16th July fire broke out in the dust extraction system of the company’s main production facility, Unit 15, Howard Road. Although the fire brigade was on site within minutes the building, full of wood based panels and machinery, was razed to the ground. Director, Bill Chambers takes up the story, “It was heart-breaking for the team to stand by and watch their life’s work going up in smoke. “The Cambridgeshire fire brigade was tremendous. Despite the risk to their lives, two members of the team entered the burning unit to remove an 18kg LPG
cylinder from a fork-lift truck. The gas container could have exploded at any moment, but their focus was to minimise danger to surrounding people and property. “At first it was estimated that the fire would burn for three days, but believe it or not, it burned for an incredible two and a half weeks. For the first six days the fire brigade was on site 24/7 to contain the fire and ensure the safety of our neighbours. By this time, despite what had happened in the previous five months and the challenges that lay ahead, we decided it wasn’t going to beat us. “So many people rallied around to help, it was just incredible. Special thanks must go to our loyal and highly experienced staff who never once lost faith and knuckled down to keep the business going through what were nine months of hard grind and uncertainty. “Despite the bad rap the insurance
industry often receives, I have to take my hat off to our insurance company, AXA and the loss adjuster GAB Robins who made every effort to keep the cash flowing throughout the rebuilding process. “One immediate hurdle was the acquisition of suitable premises nearby to get production rolling again. For this we will be eternally grateful to SPG who had vacated a unit located three plots down from us and kindly gave us a 12-month lease on Unit 19, which was just perfect. “The next issue was a small matter of machinery. For 20 years we have used the global market leading Homag equipment because of its superb quality, reliability and technical supremacy. When Charles Smith of Homag UK heard of our plight, they responded like the professional company they are, agreeing to supply us with a Holzma HPP 350 beam saw and a Weeke 43M CNC router to get us back on our feet.

As a special thank you to the fire brigade, Broadcraft set its Weeke CNC router to make rocking chairs for their guests in exchange for donations to the Cambridgeshire fire charity
“Normally, machinery of this nature takes many months to arrive. Homag, however, pulled out all the stops. Within two months the machines were not only delivered but also installed and running. With Unit 19 operational, we were back in business and the fight back began in earnest. “During the winter months it was like running three businesses: the insurance claim, the building of the new Unit 15 and keeping our board processing business going. “With the support of everyone we managed to make it through this tough period and by March 2013 the new unit was almost built. It was handed over to us the first week of June and since then Homag has been helping install our new machinery. “Given the unexpected opportunity to get new machinery, we have taken the chance to invest in bigger more powerful equipment that can handle the larger boards being imported these days. “True to its word, Homag has taken back
the Weeke 43M CNC machine and partexchanged it for a new Weeke BHP 210 44/22 CNC giving us the ability to process boards up to 4.4m x 2.2m. “We have also taken delivery of a new Holzma beam saw, the HPL 430 43/48 which allows us to work with boards 4.3m long. Homag UK has also moved our Holzma HPP 350 beam saw from Unit 19 to the new Unit 15. “Later this year we will also be taking delivery of a new Weeke BHX 050 vertical CNC machine which will give us better flexibility for drilling. We can’t speak too highly of the team at Homag and it is thanks to them that we have been able to keep the production process running these last nine months or so. “July 16th this year was a very special day for us as our new unit officially opened for business just 12 months to the day that fire struck. To mark this auspicious occasion and as a ‘thank you’ to all those who have helped us rebuild the business we decided to hold a celebratory Open Day. “To make this a day to remember we
See our website and interactive magazine www.p-j-production.com
invited the hundreds of people who have stood by us to join in the celebration – although I must admit there was no way we were going to make it a barbeque! “As a ‘thank you’ to the Cambridgeshire Fire Brigade we set up our Weeke CNC machine to produce children’s wooden rocking chairs. Guests could get one of these special chairs by making a contribution to the Cambridge Fire and Rescue Services charity. “It was a fantastic day and a very emotional one for our team who have worked so hard to get us back on our feet again. To avoid similar catastrophes in the future, we have invested in a state-of-the-art spark detection and fire suppression system and are now looking forward to serving our customers for many trouble free years to come,” concludes Chambers. Love To Be Creative... Richard Love is just the sort of prospective customer David Thompson Rowland was hoping to meet on his recent Roadshow tour from Bucks to Yorkshire with his new CoJet print system: a creative thinker and a true entrepreneur. In fact, Richard is so ideal he could have been a set-up waiting for it all to happen ... though both Richard and David TR swear that it’s not so. Thirty three year old Richard seems to be one of those lucky people with an ability to see instantly how elements of his business can be changed and adapted to play a more vital role in his business scope overall. When the RW Machines Roadshow came to town he was the major share holder in a
bespoke kitchen and bedroom manufacturing company and has now sold off his lion’s share quota to his fellow directors in order to focus more effectively on the new graphics capabilities his CoJet print system will give him. “Seeing CoJet at RW Machines’ Leeds showroom was one of life’s ‘wow’ experiences”, he says. “My mind went into overdrive after a series of light bulb moments made it clear the graphics scope I could address with this new technology. I just had to have it!” he says. No stranger to be being thrown in at the deep end, Richard left the UK with this parents for Holland at the age of 11; his new school obliged him to learn the Dutch language and taught him also to adapt fully to life in a different country, a land with a new and very different set of ideals. “My experience of moving to Holland has definitely had a major influence on the person I am today,” he says. “I’m not scared to try new and different things; in fact, I think that I go out of my way to be ‘unique’”, he adds. However, it was the simplicity of the machine right across its capability range and also of confidence and belief in RW Machines for their highly regarded customer support standards that made the decision to invest so easy to take. CoJet has no restrictions Richard is free to design whatever he wants and to use a range of materials that are both waterproof and lightfast.
It isn’t difficult to see where this line of Graphics experimentation may lead for the decor of the proposed Love Lunch chain.
Love Lunch is the sandwich shop/restaurant which Richard Love plans as being the first of many; brand decor for this proposed new outlets is another reason for CoJet’s acquisition.
Striking examples of how dramatic statements can be made with CoJet for one-side-only printing of childrens’ bedroom doors without compromising decor throughout the rest of the house.

Sticking with the ‘natural’ timber theme for table tops and perhaps for table-top information, Richard Love is experimenting with the effects he can achieve.
Richard’s wife Helen will also play a major part in terms of using the machine to its best advantage; she is a graphic designer and has been prominent in the development of graphics software and systems for children. She also has a specialisation in doors at all levels and now wants to bring ceilings within her speciality range, particularly in the short term to include designs for the new Manchester showroom building which has been bought by Richard as a gallery and production
studio for the new printing business. As well as being part of the ‘manufacturing printer’ culture of Richard Love’s new studio set up in Manchester, his very popular coffee shop Love Lunch will also become one of the first of the Love family businesses to come under the refit microscope. In addition to redesigning the style of inside and outside seating areas, Richard and Helen are keen to also move forward with new eye-catching prints for the outside elements of the business that can perhaps now withstand the worst and, in 2013, also the best, of the very changeable northern British climate. A new design strategy has been established for wall panels and ceilings, as well as for table tops and covers, menus, signage, and for general graphics displays that are now UV protected and are also now printable on the vary latest of lightfast materials that will withstand just about anything the British climate can throw at them. Richard is also now in talks with local authorities on their own plans for creative outdoor signage and billboard advertising across the region. Indeed, Richard Love can see demand arising for additional CoJet print systems to
address other needs across the territory especially if weather prospects remain good for coming months (and perhaps hopes rise for future seasons!). “The future is not such a puzzle,” says Richard: “I am young still but I have seen enough of the markets I’m closely involved with to know that this is the right time to invest in new technologies”. While he is confident in the new doors that this machine will open for his business, he admits that none of it would have been possible without the help and guidance of David Thompson Rowland and his RW Machines team. “From the moment I signed on the dotted line, RW Machines’ support has been
Compact and infinitely capable: CoJet by Anderson
invaluable. They even arranged for a German CoJet engineer to visit us for a week of machine training ... how many companies these days would (or even could) do that?” Many of us who have had experience of the markets, whether of wood and panels or commercial retail property, and the supply mechanisms that serve them, will have no difficulty in seeing the validity of Richard Love’s statement. And there are many more of us who will remain on the edges of our seats to see, as the year unfolds, how things play out. But Richard and Helen Love are in no doubt, this is their time to invest ... and they know it!
For further information: Tel: 01869 244943 Email: sales@rwmachines.co.uk www.rwmachines.co.uk Richard Love thinks that CoJet is going to “change his life” by the sheer versatility of the technology.

PROFILE Biesse’s First 20 Years In The UK – Promoting Innovation Steve Bulmer, MD of Biesse UK, looks at Biesse’s innovative machinery - past, present and future. 20 years ago Biesse Group UK Ltd started trading in January 1993; within a few weeks we had sold a “BIESSE ROVER 335”, to Moores Furniture Group Ltd based in Wetherby. 20 years on, this machine is still installed and working alongside a number of other Biesse group machines; the latest being a “Biesse Skipper 130” installed in the early part of 2012. We estimate that to date, the Rover 335 at Moores has probably processed in excess of 3,000,000 panels! Not a bad investment. The average price of a machine from Biesse back in 1993 was approx. £65,000; which in today’s terms would be £106,000; but in reality because of the improvements in manufacture, design and standardisation across the broad portfolio and the huge investment Biesse SPA has made in its plant in Pesaro, our average machine price in 2013 is still £65,000; even though we produce machines closer to £40,000 for processing Kitchen carcases and doors! (*BiesseFact – a
High Melt Gluing System
tailor made Biesse CNC can come off our production line every 2 hours) So what else has changed in 20 years? Well for a start I had hair then! But seriously Biesse UK started with three employees, of whom two are still here, me and John; our turnover in the first year was approximately £2 million, while in 2012 we finished the year close to £20 Million turnover with 37 employees. The Biesse Group Spa has been in business for more than 40 years now, while present in the UK with the subsidiary for the last 20 of those and things have changed dramatically during that time; but innovation has always been at the forefront of the Biesse mission, in fact you could say we are game changers, not just the

machines, because that’s not the whole story, but let’s start there; When you think of Beam saws of today, “Selco” were the company that set the scene with the ground breaking WN series. New on a market which was already crowded, they launched the first fully CNC beam saw. Today we are still setting the standards, moving high technology concepts into everyday life, with the introduction of the “Twin Pusher” onto even the smallest of our range the “SEKTOR” Series. This really starts to bring “one-off” production back to the beam saw. Selco haven’t stopped there, with the Twin Pusher now evolving into the “Multi Pusher” for our angle plants, this brings even greater benefits of increased productivity with complex patterns.

customers with existing Biesse products. Having been with the Biesse subsidiary since day one, it’s nice to look back with nostalgia over the 20 years,
The “SKIPPER” was the first CNC drilling machine to process two panels simultaneously with zero set up time; now a format embraced by other machine manufacturers. While imitation is the best form of flattery, they are yet to match the simplicity and reliability of the Biesse patents used in this type of machine. The “UNIWIN” is another game changer, bringing a complete window factory into one machine, and making windows component by component in a truly batch one process. The “STREAM” edgebanding machine with a unique patented gluing section addressing known industry issues with glue application. Ask us why it was the bestselling double sided edgebander in the UK in 2012. “BREMA” the first vertical through feed processing centre, again ideal for batch-one production and with an unrivalled ability for the automated insertion of hardware. “VIET” premium sanders with game changing patents for finish and lacquer sanding. Consider that Viet have been making high gloss polishing system since 1953, shows the kind of expertise that is available at this award winning company. This is just a short list that quickly came to mind, but the list goes on and on!
So high quality and innovation comes as standard with Biesse products, when you then build in exceptional price/performance ratio, it is no wonder that more than 60% of our business each year comes from
but let’s be blunt what’s of interest for us all is the future. We all have to face that we live in difficult trading conditions, where consumers have a huge choice of where to buy products and services. What excites me is this is great news for us all; we are all demanding value for money products with great customer service; that’s why everything we do here is with you in our focus. We ask what you want, listen and are striving every day to provide this. Proof that we are moving in the right direction is the increase in orders since incorporating our “TOTAL CARE” program. If you don’t know what this is, it’s a customer care package created by Biesse incorporating a 5 year warranty & a 5 year service program on all Biesse machines. We also help you to tie up a few of the loose ends you don’t want to think about when buying a machine. Such
demonstrate the reliability of our machines and our confidence to offer a 5 year warranty as standard on all new Biesse machines, so feel free to ask more about Total Care. So what do you think?
• Does innovation improve productivity? • Would a more reliable machine improve your margins? • Is performance at least as important as the price? If you would answer “YES” to any of these questions then it’s likely you already do business with Biesse; if not, you should be giving us call now. Don’t be mistaken we are not perfect and we are certainly not arrogant, we do still sometimes get it wrong; but it’s how we react when something goes wrong, we are decisive and proactive to your needs. We have not yet met the standards we are setting ourselves, but we are changing the nature of machinery supply for the better in the UK market. We still stock more spares that any other machinery supplier in the UK, approximately £2.5 million! Ask us what it means for you? Like I said earlier “innovation has always been at the forefront of the Biesse mission”. We innovate and it’s good news for you.

HOMAG UK – A Quality Experience from Start to Finish for Contour Furnishings Contour Furnishings designs and installs made to measure bedroom and home office furniture. The company’s experienced cabinet makers manufacture the products at its own premises in Derbyshire, they are then installed by inhouse professional fitters. When the company was in need of a new edgebander Richard Meakin, manager of Contour Furnishings, turned to HOMAG UK. He explains, “We already had a WEEKE Venture 3 which was installed in our factory over 10 years ago. The machine works very well and is extremely reliable. For this reason, HOMAG was included in our selection process along with two other possible suppliers.”

headquarters in Castle Donington we tested the BRANDT Highflex 1220 edgebander and the BRANDT KTD 720 manual edgebander. “We looked at the Highflex with a view to update our existing edgebander. The KTD 720 however, was a new addition to our factory floor because it can cope with shaped edges and PVC tape – enabling us to manufacture designs that would put us ahead of the competition. “After the testing period, it was clear that HOMAG machines had performed the best. They were more flexible, robustly built and they produced the highest quality of finish when processing our materials.”
Professional, quality and efficient service “Matt Long, the sales representative of HOMAG UK assisted us with our investment and was particularly helpful throughout the

process. When it came to the installation, the machines arrived on time and everything was set up quickly and efficiently. HOMAG engineers worked with our machinists to ensure that they were confident using the equipment. “We had an afternoon of training from HOMAG, but the machines were relatively simple to get to grips with and we were up and running very quickly. The engineers paid us a visit a few days after the installation to ensure that we were happy and everything was going smoothly.”
Advanced machining “The Highflex 1220 is technically advanced compared to our previous edgebander, however, the operator interface is still simple and easy to use. “We have two types of tape that we use - a 0.4mm melamine tape and a 2mm ABS tape. Both of these are set up on the machine and it’s very easy to switch between the two without having to change too many settings. Versatility like this is essential for a make to measure company like ourselves.
already benefited from as it means minimal machine down time. “If and when an issue arises, HOMAG acts promptly. As soon as we report a problem, an engineer is onsite the next day. For example, when a machine stopped, the engineer arrived and traced the issue to a fuse that had blown, repairing it quickly and getting us operational again. “Both edgebanders have made a significant difference to our business. Not only have we saved a lot of man hours, but also we can now offer an even wider variety of designs all with a better quality of finish. “Our experience with HOMAG has been very positive. The company has been professional and helpful from start to finish. We went to them to look for the edgebanders because of their reputation and reliability - they’ve not let us down. “We’d certainly use HOMAG again and recommend them to others. They offered us a great deal and the quality and build of their products is in a class of its own,” concludes Meakin.
“In addition, the 1220 has a trimming unit built in which means the panels are now finished on the machine without us having to do any additional work to them. This has resulted in huge time savings of about two to three hours a day.”
Regular Servicing “For peace of mind, we have taken a two year service contract for parts and labour. This has been an excellent add-on, which we have

Whether you require a machine for flexible production to fulfil bespoke orders or demanding industrial production, BRANDT offers the right solution at the right price.
Small – medium sized options
Single-sided edging for small producers BRANDT’s range of Ambition edgebanders starts with the 1100 series, capable of edgebanding up to 3mm in thickness. The super compact 1110 can be supplied with or without a pre-milling unit. Both options have a precision gluing unit and coil magazine, a two motor snipping unit, top and bottom trimming and finishing units. A new addition to the 1100 series is the 1120 FC which comes complete with a corner rounding unit, making this the most compact machine for complete edge application and post processing. The 1100 series is the perfect choice for entry level users. The next step up is the 1200 series. These machines run with a higher track speed and provide customers with a very respectable throughput at an extremely attractive price point. A very useful feature supplied as standard is a contact heating shoe; when activated it transfers contact heat into the board edge immediately prior to the glue application on the work piece edge. This maintains the gluing quality, especially with difficult edging materials or at very low ambient temperatures. A very easy to use controller
Moving further up the production scale, the 1400 series edgebanders set the benchmark for medium level production. With an edge capacity of 8mm, program controlled adjustment of the units and extremely accurate settings, the 1400 is an ideal partner for a medium sized business. The 1440 FC is the most popular machine from the range and is supplied complete with BRANDT’s servo controlled corner rounding units. These can be adjusted from the control panel of the machine to change from one tape type to another with absolute accuracy. If required, machines can be equipped with PUR adhesive systems to cater for applications where water and heat resistance is an advantage.
Ambition 1650 FC for high end throughput With extremely short set up times, the high output Ambition 1650 FC has a host of automated features that deliver significant time savings. It has all the advantages found in the 1400 but with the added benefits of a range of equipment for 15mm edge application and finishing, as well as faster feed speeds for higher capacity requirements.
‘Invisible Joints’ for all – see it with your own eyes! Displayed at Ligna 2013 and following the successful launch of the technology at last year’s W12, the revolutionary BRANDT airTec system continues to stun potential customers with its superior

finish. BRANDT’s airTec system brings ‘invisible joint’ quality edgebanding within reach of smaller producers. Simon Brooks, sales and marketing director of HOMAG UK explains, “Until recently, the ‘invisible joint’ effect was only achievable for larger producers using high end technology, such as HOMAG’s laserTec. This is perfectly fine for the volume producer, but in the same way that Formula 1 technology expands into the mass car market, the HOMAG Group wanted to develop a system which could bring invisible joints technology to the whole woodworking industry. “To achieve this goal, the experts at BRANDT developed a revolutionary edgebanding solution to give even the smallest workshops the ability to reproduce industrial ‘invisible joint’ quality in the form of airTec. “The process starts when a commercially available coextruded edging tape, is heated by compressed air (between 270°C and 320°C) as it goes through the machine. This heat activates molecular bonding between the panel and edging material as they are fused together and produces outstanding results. “airTec technology can be combined with a conventional glue pot to provide extreme flexibilty. The changeover between the two methods takes very little time so that responding to customer demands is quick and easy. “A simple technique, airTec can be easily adapted to suit different panel thicknesses; it is therefore a flexible and cost effective solution to most edging needs. This latest innovation brings seamless edge technology within the reach of the majority rather
than the minority. “BRANDT airTec is available on all 1400 -1800 series edgebanders. With machinery already in build for the UK market, we’re certain that this incredible airTec system is going to be in huge demand – the final results are simply amazing.”
Shaping up As well as providing a large choice of throughfeed machines for straight edged panels, BRANDT offers a selection machines such as the KTD 720 for edgebanding and trimming curved edge panels. This flexible machine concept is efficient and reliable when it comes to gluing a series of formed parts with both internal and external radii. For larger shaped panels such as desktops, BRANDT offers up the Optimat KTD 820. The unique feature on the 820 is that the panel is securely held by a vacuum clamping system. The edgebander is also mobile, making it very easy to edgeband larger products. When you consider the number of models and breadth of applications available from this powerful German company, it’s clear to see why BRANDT remains the world’s No. 1 manufacturer of high quality edgebanders for the panel processing industry. “We always have a wide range of BRANDT edgebanders at HOMAG UK available for visitors to trial and for quick delivery purposes. Customers are more than welcome to visit our showroom to see these quality machines in action for themselves,” concludes Simon.

EDGEBANDERS INSTALLATION
Utopia Install Stefani Slim Line Technology Utopia Bathroom Group are the UK's leading manufacturer of complete bathroom solutions, supplying more complete bathrooms each year than any other manufacturer in the UK. For over 21 years, Utopia have been designing and manufacturing high quality bathroom suites, bathroom furniture, worktops, mirrors and bathroom accessories in the UK. Cabinets and furniture are a large percentage of Utopia's sales. At the beginning of 2012, Utopia's Managing Director, Dave Conn, and Production Engineer, John Phelps, decided to examine their edge banding requirements and study the latest technology available. Having already installed several SCM Group machines including a Stefani Performance SB Combination Line, Stefani Solution and IDM Activa Edge Banders as well as SCM Ergon and Morbidelli CNC Machining Centres, SCM's Groups Sales Manager, Ian McCarthy, was called in, along with other edge bander manufacturers for detailed discussions. Utopia's requirement was for the very best glue line available, a machine that is fast and easy to set up between jobs especially on a short production run, easy changeover of glue types and colours and edge banding materials with varying heights and thicknesses of panels, and also with minimal manual operator intervention. Ian McCarthy offered Utopia, Stefani's patented 'Slim Line" solution. Dave Conn comments: "Although we already have many SCM Group machines, we did look at other edge bander manufacturers, but in the end we decided the proposal for a Stefani Slim Line process on a Solution 93 machine suited our needs the best. We also demand the highest specification on a machine, despite the cost implication, with many options fitted to suit our current needs, but also with the possibility in the future to upgrade by adding the latest technology that becomes available, for example Laser Line."

Panel Return Conveyors on Stefani Solution Slim Line at Utopia
John Phelps, who looks after all of Utopia's edge banders, states "We wanted the new edge bander to produce panels with an excellent glue line with no after working involved. We use 0.8 - 2mm PVC, melamine and ABS edge banding on our carcasses, 2mm for our range of doors, but also 54mm wide edging for our very popular and fashinable 50mm thick worktops." "The new Slim Line machine, unlike the older Solution model that applied PU glue from glue pots and required Nitrogen, has the very latest Nordson PUR Blue closed system fitted. Applying PU glue to the edge banding through a slot device and not to the panel edge, the glue is supplied in "Slugs" that can be easily and cleanly changed over within seconds, for example, from white colour glue for our white or white gloss panels, or neutral colour glue for all the wood effect panels. With a very thin, uniform application of glue to the edging material, far less glue is used and therefore the process provides a considerable saving in costs. A traditional hot melt glue pot with a fast melting system is fitted but little used."
Using less glue saves on the cost of materials and the energy required to melt the glue. Furthermore the slot distribution system has eliminated the glue pot and the various mechanical components of traditional gluing units, thus reducing maintenance costs and eliminating downtimes which have a considerable influence on production costs. The Solution 93 is fitted with the very latest PC and software controls all the functions of the machine, with PC Office that works with Windows XP. Stefani's WIN EDGE Plus software allows easy, fast and precise machine management, with double hard disk for continual auto back-up and 15inch LCD display with touch screen. The machine can be programmed directly from the office and provide production reports. Teleservice modem is fitted so SCM or Stefani engineers can remotely intervene should a problem arise or for software updating. At the infeed of the Solution is a device to ensure that large dimensioned panels are fed correctly aligned into the machine. An

AAR Spray Anti-adhesion Unit ensures there are no glue deposits on the top and bottom panel surfaces, followed by a Premilling Unit that machines the panel edge to guarantee a perfect finish to accept the glued edge banding. The glued tape is fed from a 6-station coil holding magazine that can be changed fast and easily, followed by
electronic positioned pressure rollers applying the edge banding to the panel edge. An upper End Trimming Unit, YU/SP, with automatic blade inclination, trims the tape precisely to the ends of the panel, followed by a fine finish Top and Bottom Edge Trimming Unit with 2position electronic positioning. Final top and bottom edge and corner
rounding is carried out by the 2M electronic 8-position Corner Rounding Unit. This precise unit has 8-position tool changers to each motor so that tooling, such as diamond cutterblocks, can be instantly changed depending upon the applied edge banding, whether rounded, chamfered, straight or other trimming is required. For fitting various types of handles to doors, a Grooving Unit with timed facility for stopped grooves can work both horizontally or vertically. A multifunctional Edge Scraping Unit, RAS/S, with electronic controls, and fitted with waste removal follows, then an Oscillating Buffing Unit with various liquids applied if required, and finally a double-sided Edge Brightening Unit. As the panels exit the Stefani Solution, a system of return conveyors transport the panels back to the operator at the machine infeed for continuous processing of the other panels edges or for stacking completed panels alongside the machine. Dave Conn concludes "We are delighted with the Stefani Solution Slim Line. As we specified the machine with all the latest technology, many of the devices were the very first of their type that Stefani had supplied. After a period of learning and with additional training for all concerned, plus the Teleservice link to Stefani and SCM, we were soon up and running the Stefani problem free, with the panels edge banded being of top quality, ensuring all the Utopia bathroom, and now bedroom products remain at the forefront of the market."

CASE STORY
Mereway Kitchens Achieve Zero Glue Line
Leading British furniture manufacturer Mereway raise the bar with their latest investment in ground breaking edge banding machinery. This innovative new machine achieves a ‘zero glue line’ using a PUR (Polyurethane) adhesive, a concept not yet introduced by any other British manufacturer in the industry. This new process provides Mereway with the ability to manufacture MFC, MDF, acrylic and veneer doors and decorative panels to the highest standards on a “made to order” basis within very short lead times. Following a comprehensive 12 month project to pursue the very best edge banding quality, the research and development paid off as Mereway attained their objective; to achieve an entirely repeatable zero glue line finish using a PUR adhesive - the preferred adhesive for Mereway. Working with partners Fen UK and machine manufacturer Paul Ott GmbH, the
18 Panel & Joinery Production SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2013
machine was specified, built and commissioned so through industry leading patented technology and design, can achieve the ultimate finish, whilst being flexible across all board types and colours and running at a speed of 20 metres per minute. Why PUR? The Technology Mereway have specified the machine to use both a clear and white PUR to ensure the best combinations of edge, board and glue colour can be achieved, providing a remarkable visual result. The adhesive management, application and dosing system is critical to the process. The combi hot melt system on the OTT machine allows the exact parameters for board types and applications to be programmed into the machine and be set at the touch of a button. However, there is far more to a PUR than just a great finish, the adhesion or bond qualities are far better than that of an EVA, the heat and water resistance properties are also much higher.
“We’re delighted with the immaculate finish the new machine produces.” Steve Neal, manufacturing manager who headed up the project commented “Mereway take capital investment very seriously, ensuring they’re at the forefront of design and product innovation within the UK’s kitchen and bathroom furniture market”. Steve continues: “This new machinery gives us a real competitive edge.” This is typical of the quality excellence Mereway retailers have been enjoying for many years, and why their reputation is unprecedented and product is so recognisable in the market.

SOFTWARE
Magi-Cut Software Launches Express ‘Plus’ In order to meet the diverse cutting requirements of SMEs throughout the industry, Bristol based Magi-Cut Software have introduced a brand new ‘Plus’ version of their already well established Magi-Cut Express cutting optimisation software. Magi-Cut Express Plus is full of new features previously unavailable in the standard Express package and is aimed at small to medium sized businesses that use sliding table or vertical panel saws and who are looking to save time and reduce material waste whilst maintaining a need for a rich choice of functions such as, direct data import, issuing of stock, labelling and more; all in one affordable software package. "We understand the value of time, and time spent on processes that can be bypassed or automatically managed by software is time better spent on generating new business,” says Karl Twyford of MagiCut Software. With over 30 years experience in software development, Magi-Cut Software has, with the launch of Magi-Cut Express Plus, bridged the gap between their entry level cutting optimiser and their Modular software packages. Launched in June, the new ‘Plus’ version incorporates many of the market's feature requests from the past two years. Part lists can now easily be imported directly from a spreadsheet and raw material board lists straight from the integrated board database. Edgebanding requirements are addressed with the help of the edging library and laminate sizes are automatically calculated. With 99 user defined information fields per part, users have the freedom to handle job complexity without having to worry about separate databases. Furthermore, stock materials can easily be imported from an external source and automatically refreshed as each job is cut; the user ultimately controls their stock and not the other way round! Batches of jobs can be optimised in a matter of seconds with Magi-Cut's efficient

scheduling of multi-core processors and the dynamic pattern editor allows parts to be deleted manually or, where space allows, supplementary parts not previously listed in the cutting list to be added to the pattern. The order of boards and the cutting patterns themselves can also be rearranged according to priority or convenience. Detailed reports and management summaries help Magi-Cut’s customers to visualise their material requirements, board yield, waste and off-cuts and puts this into context in terms of real cost to your business in £GBP. These reports are fully customisable to meet different preferences in terms of layout, colours and fonts. The user has complete control over their processes and all this information can easily be exported in PDF or Excel to share with their teams. The label and form designers are also very popular functions allowing barcodes and pictures to be added to customised labels and forms. Karl adds that: “Magi-Cut Express Plus

New Decors Prove a Winning Combination EGGER is continuing the trend for rustic textured finishes with the introduction of three new woodgrain decors into its UK stock range – alongside a neutral solid colour designed to replace the ever-present cream. Following the success of its Bardolino Oak decor, that features a highly-realistic saw-cut design, it has created additional lighter and darker versions with its H1145 ST10 Natural Bardolino Oak and H1158 ST10 Truffle Brown Bardolino Oak. “The authentic appearance of the Bardolino Oak range epitomises what can now be achieved with our wood reproductions,” said EGGER’s Elliott Fairlie. “With its complementary ST10 surface texture, these striking decors provide a high value, exclusive appearance in keeping with the rough-cut trend that was very evident at the recent Interzum show in Cologne. “Untreated wood, that looks as though it has just been taken off the saw, is currently in great demand. A combination of knots, pronounced planking and saw cuts give all three versions of Bardolino Oak a worn, authentic look that can be perfectly combined with a wide range of neutral solid colours,” he explained. With this in mind, EGGER has also introduced U702 ST9 Cashmere – a neutral solid colour that continues the KBB sector’s move away from cream to grey. This highly versatile shade works well in combination with other neutral solids, on its own – to create a sophisticated and contemporary feel – or with authentic woodgrains such as the new Bardolino Oaks. “The importance of neutral solid colours continues to increase – with natural and muted tones, ideal for combining with natural woodgrains, proving popular. Not only is the proportion of these solid colours in furniture design increasing, but they are often becoming the starting point in design decisions,” added Elliott. A surprise introduction is the new H1752 ST10 Sand Provencial Elm design. Although known as more of a simple, plain and elegant wood, it demonstrates that even elm can follow the current demand for authentic woodgrains.

With natural features and the depth of the decor pattern, it gives the viewer the impression of an untreated wood surface and gains the perfect feel with the ST10 authentic texture. The variation in the grain also allows subtle contrasts with colours such as the U702 ST9 Cashmere as well as white. With its pearlescent elements, these features come together to create a highly elegant yet natural finish. Coming Soon for Decorative Panels Renowned for many years as innovators The Decorative Panels Group is yet again about to launch a brand new group of products that will further broaden the appeal of the Group companies to both its existing and new market areas. Working as a partner company with BioCote® the company is about to launch the UK’s first range of commercially available sheet materials that offer exceptional abrasion and antibacterial properties. In choosing to work alongside

BioCote®, Decorative Panels will be able to draw on the knowledge and support of a company that are recognised as being pioneers in the global provision of antimicrobial solutions. Under the banner of dp-BioCote the first product to be launched will be six decors, three woodgrain and three unicolours, available across the company’s extensive range of substrate materials including Chipboard, MDF, dp-lite hollowcore board and Plywood. Further launches will follow and in the fullness of time will see
Decorative Panels extend the range of products available in the dp-BioCote area. The surface itself offers a combination of distinctive properties. Due to the nature of the décor manufacture, alongside the addition of the BioCote® additive, the surface is highly resistant to abrasion, in fact it far exceeds the abrasion resistance of a standard high pressure worktop. In addition the surface has a high resistance to common liquids that are known to leave distinctive marks, as well as meeting all the testing parameters appropriate to dry heat

DECORATIVE SURFACES and wet heat. Tests against resistance to clinical cleaning products see excellent results in all areas. From the above it can be seen that the product is extremely hard wearing and very resistant to damage from other materials. Of course one of the most significant properties of this innovative sheet material is the inclusion of the antibacterial additive from BioCote® that gives up to a 99.9% germ free surface*. BioCote technology protects the surface of the product from microbes including mould, fungi and of course bacteria - meaning the product surface is more hygienic and resistant to the growth of staining and odour causing microbes which may prematurely degrade the material. Both in laboratory and real life conditions BioCote® has been proven effective against a wide range of clinically significant bacteria including MRSA (Methicillin resistant Staphlococcus aureus), MSSA (Methicillin sensitive Staphlococcus aureus), E. coli, Legionella pneumophila , Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella typhimurium and enteritidis, Listeria monocytogenes, VRE (Vancomycin – resistant Enterococcus), and Campylobacter as well as the H1N1 virus. Once added to a product BioCote technology starts to work immediately, tests have shown significant decreases in microbial contamination within just 15 minutes and reductions of up to 99.5% in 2 hours. Very significantly BioCote works for
the expected lifetime of the product. With so much to offer in one sheet material it is not surprising that Decorative Panels see a great potential for this product across a wide range of product areas. Recognised as the market leader for high volume manufacture of kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, shelving and storage panels, Decorative Panels Components believe that product manufactured using dp-BioCote sheet material has a real place in these
markets and can offer a USP that to date has not been available. Market areas such as hospitals, health centres, schools, care homes, student accommodation, and of course office and contract furniture would, according to Decorative Panels Lamination, all benefit from product manufactured from a sheet material with high abrasion and antibacterial resistant properties.

BOARDS & PANELS Finsa: Leader in Flame Retardant Solutions in Woodbased Panels Across the UK, fires cause hundreds of deaths every year, in addition to immense material damage. When designing equipment, it is vital to know what materials can slow the spread of fire, as they allow firefighting services to have more time, thus limiting the damage. Flame retardant (FR) wood panels even when in direct contact with flames for more than 20 minutes, do not end up igniting.

BOARDS & PANELS Unique Exhibition Show-House Boasts Norbord Panels Norbord’s leading Caberdek flooring and Sterling OSB sheathing has been used to create a full-size two-storey demonstration house for use at exhibitions. Created by Frame Wise of Prestiegne, Powys, the demonstration house was first shown at the Timber Expo in September 2012 after which it was dismantled until its second outing, at the Homebuilding and Renovating Show at the NEC in March this year. The building, which measures approximately 9m wide by 22m long, was designed to demonstrate the elements of the Frame Wise timber systems, including the Wise Wall, S Series and T Series designs. Panels and floors were installed with cut-outs and cross sections visible to show the make-up of the systems from the internal skin through the insulation and vapour barriers to the outer cladding. All wall-panels were sheathed with Norbord’s 9mm Sterling OSB, the UK’s leading brand of oriented strand board, while the floors were all decked with Caberdek, Norbord’s popular tongueand-grooved particleboard flooring panels. Frame Wise also uses 15mm and 18mm tongue-and-grooved Sterling OSB for structural roof panels.
“Sterling OSB is our standard sheathing board and Caberdek is our first choice for floors,” comments Frame Wise Managing Director Simon Orrells. “Quality and availability are important factors for us, as is the environmental profile of our raw materials. “Because Sterling OSB and Caberdek are both UK-made from sustainable wood fibre, they contribute to the environmental profile of our systems, as well as delivering a quality structure” adds Mr Orrells. The exhibition house – which took just two days to erect for the exhibitions – was a full-scale building rather than a studio mockup. The ground-floor was used at both exhibitions as a lecture theatre for the exhibition organisers while the upstairs accommodation housed a hospitality suite and meeting room. Meanwhile, Frame Wise is busy working on a new design ready for next year’s Homebuilding and Renovation show.

Taylor Made Joinery Interiors Improves Quality of Finish with HOMAG Equipment For joinery and interior fit out specialists, Taylor Made Joinery Interiors (TMJ), quality and cutting edge technology are everything. With over 30 years of experience, the company produces specialist joinery for high profile and blue chip clients as well as prestigious private residential customers, all of whom expect perfection. When TMJ was looking at modernising its CNC machinery they chose HOMAG for its reputation as worldwide market leaders in quality, reliability and cutting edge technology. Pat Coll is the production director of TMJ, he explains, “As a company, we are always looking to move forward with the times; two of our CNC machining centres were in need of modernising and so we began to research
the market. “We already had HOMAG equipment in our works and have always enjoyed a more than satisfactory experience with the company. In my opinion, HOMAG is the best on the market and so, after careful consideration, we pressed ahead ordering two 5-axis HOMAG BMG 611 CNC machines and one 3-axis WEEKE BHX 055 Optimat CNC from HOMAG UK.”
Smooth installation process “When it came to the installation process of the machines, it went smoothly. We had already had two members of staff trained on the machines in Germany for a week prior to the installation. Then, once up and running, a HOMAG engineer came to our site to train four more operators.” “Understandably, our guys were a little
nervous when they first used the machines however, within the first couple of weeks everyone was very comfortable operating them. They’re far easier to use than their predecessors in terms of programming, the touch screen interface is extremely user friendly and the BMG 611 CNCs are much quicker.” “We were supplied with HOMAG’s own in house software to use with our new CNCs: woodMotion, collisionControl and woodWOP. Each program integrates into our system easily and enhances production. The woodWOP interface is much more user friendly than our previous software, yet it retains full compatibility with CAM systems for higher end works.”

“In terms of the benefits the CNCs have delivered, they have increased our product throughput because they are generally quicker, easier to set up and deliver a higher quality of finish straight off the machine. They have also achieved a significant cost saving. “With the modern controls and increased processing power, the 5-axis paths are faster and smoother than those we had before, with better geometry tracking at high feed speeds. “HOMAG’s patented SORB TECH© composite bed construction has been a major plus for us due to its ability to absorb almost all vibrations into the machine frame. This along with our Tribos tooling system has resulted in a superior surface finish compared to that possible from conventional CNC machines. Improving product quality is something that we are
always striving to achieve and through the modernisation of our equipment we have certainly met this goal. “In addition to the production gains, our factory and employees have also enjoyed positive benefits from the new machines. The controllable dust extraction hood on the HOMAG is a much better process and has led to superb extraction flow. The general working environment is therefore a lot cleaner and tidier which has improved our overall health and safety."
had with HOMAG has been great. We’ve maintained a relationship with them for quite a few years and they always provide a friendly service. If we ever have any issues, there’s always someone for us to speak to. “We’ve been a very satisfied customer of HOMAG’s, everybody is very easy to get on with and we’d definitely recommend them to others. They provide a friendly, helpful service as well as exceptional quality machinery,” concludes Coll.
High expectations for HOMAG “When dealing with the worldwide market leader in woodworking machinery you automatically have high expectations and there is no doubt that HOMAG UK met those. “Their machines are of an extremely high standard and the whole experience we’ve

SAWS J W Timber looks to Daltons Wadkin for Machine Supply, Service and Factory Relocation Winners of the TTJ Small Business of the Year Award 2011, J W Timber Ltd, currently celebrating their 10th anniversary, has invested in new premises and equipment to meet a growing customer demand. John Wardle, founder of J W Timber Ltd, explains why he looked to Daltons Wadkin when moving to their new purpose built machining facility in Marden, Kent: “We initially contacted Daltons Wadkin to source an additional straight line edger. After discussing our overall project plans for early 2013 we quickly realised that Daltons Wadkin offered everything we needed from a serviced Wadkin PU Straight Line Edger, to the sophisticated Salvador S200 Automatic Crosscut.” “One of the key things that set Daltons Wadkin apart was the additional Support Services offered. We took advantage of their in-house machine moving and installation service, had our equipment serviced and upgraded and continue to use them for ongoing maintenance and breakdown assistance. Having everything offered from a single source took a lot of stress out of the move.”
Salvador Crosscut John Wardle first saw the Salvador at W12
exhibition, “The Salvador S200 Crosscut was a fantastic discovery. We had been considering various options from the usual sources. While other manufacturers applied high pressure sales tactics it was a refreshing change to deal with a family run company that listened to our requirements”. Daltons Wadkin has seen a considerable increase in demand for the Salvador products. Not afraid of a bit of competition Alex Dalton comments “Salvador is a relatively new name to the UK market. Despite the obvious competition on show at W12 I knew once J W Timber could see the build quality and witness how easy it is to use they would be sold”. Never making a decision lightly, John instructed his Mill Manager Joel Brame to visit the Daltons Wadkin purpose built showroom and engineering facility in Nottingham for a thorough inspection of the Salvador. “This final approval process was as much about a behind the scenes inspection of the engineering team as it was about the machine inspection”, comments Joel, “The commitment to quality and service was immediately evident from the extensive demonstration and workshop facilities.” John Wardle enthuses “The Salvador easily copes with our requirements and indeed we are now seeing a huge increase in
demand from customers wanting an accurate cut to length service, something we could never do before on a large scale.” The Salvador S200 is equipped with full PC control, optimisation software with defecting and automatic quality selection, and a high speed high capacity pusher with 6.2m infeed. Other configurations of Salvador include automatic loading and unloading options, high speed operation up to 120 m/min and angle cutting.
Factory relocation and installation With the new building finished on schedule Daltons Wadkin were called in to implement the turnkey operation including the machinery move and reinstallation, commissioning of the Salvador Crosscut and Wadkin Edger and servicing the existing equipment. Alex Dalton is proud of the services on offer. “We have considerable experience with all types of factory relocations and of course specialise in woodworking equipment. The unique combination of running our own custom built craned lorry, coupled with our highly trained engineering staff enables us to efficiently and safely decommission, uplift and relocate equipment.”

SAWS Refurbished Striebig the Model Solution for University In need of a high quality, durable saw for the best price they could find, a faculty at the University of the West of England in Bristol chose a three-yearold Striebig vertical panel machine. The saw, supplied last December, is used in the design workshops within the Faculty of the Environment and Technology (FET) where it sizes thin sheet ply and MDF sheet material, up to 16mm thick. Said Nick Tidman, the faculty’s technical manager, laboratories and workshops: “We previously had a circular saw but it took up too much workshop space when we recently relocated our design model making workshops, so we decided to purchase a vertical panel saw.” “Our specialist technical staff in the design workshops recommended that we considered a Striebig as according to them they were ‘industry standard professional machines’. We found the supplier, T.M. Machinery through a web search for ‘panel saws’ and luckily found out that had a suitable second hand model in stock.”
They were happy to buy the Compact 4164 model, the smallest of the nine models in the entry-level range, because as well as limited workshop space they had no need for a bigger machine. “Our technicians who use the saw like its very robust construction and the smoothness of operation, both of the saw unit and the vertical and horizontal axis of movement,” said Nick Tidman. “It has made cutting sheet material much easier, much more accurate and quicker. With all the added benefits it is delivering we would be lost without it.” The Compact 4164 has a cutting range of 3100 x 1644mm (10 ft x 5 ft) and a maximum depth of cut of 60mm. It guarantees impressive dust limit values of well below 1mg/m3, which is greatly appreciated by the staff in the FET. All Compact saws are based on a single, fully welded sawing frame to give decades of reliable service whilst maintaining cutting precision. They can be wall-mounted or freestanding and can cut practically all wood-
based sheet materials as well as timber, plaster board, plastics, composites and aluminium panels. “We were very happy with T.M’s attention to detail over the initial sales call plus the follow-up pre-delivery, delivery and installation service, and would happily recommend them to other would-be purchasers,” said Mr Tidman. T.M. Machinery only supplies secondhand Striebig machines that they are sure will give many more years of reliable service. “They all undergo a comprehensive refurbishment with older machine being completely stripped down so that all bearings and other parts subject to wear can be replaced,” said director Matt Pearce. “Our confidence in our refurbished machinery is backed up by a six-month parts and labour warranty.” For further information: Tel: 0116 271 7155 Email: sales@tmservices.co.uk www.tmmachinery.co.uk

TOOLING
Vollmer is Part of the Family at Ernest Bennett's Celebrating its 50th year of business next year, one of the founding partners and company chairman at Ernest Bennett (Darlington) Ltd puts the company’s success down to the hard work and support of his family, long serving staff and a strategy of heavy re-investment in technology. As Ernest Bennett (Darlington) Chairman, Mr Rob Maxey recalls: “The Company was formed by my uncle Ernest Bennett and I with nothing more than a grinder and a file in my hand. Now, we have over £3m of machine tools, a high percentage of it being from Vollmer, some that are robotically loaded to run unmanned overnight. Times have certainly changed since 1964.” Since its inception, the County Durham based company has evolved to be the leading manufacturer and supplier to the UK and Republic of Ireland and export to many countries in the provision of Bandsaw blades, TCT & HSS circular saw blades, wood cutter blocks for profiling and profile knives and more recently solid carbide spirals and routers for the wood and metal cutting sectors. As the regions’ leading manufacturer and service centre, Ernest Bennett (Darlington) has continually expanded to fill its current six and a half acre site, a facility of over 40,000sq/ft with 54 staff. The company includes a number of achievements through its 50-year history that have guaranteed its success. We are proud of our zero redundancies, a significant number of our staff with over 25 years company service and a continuous rigorous apprenticeship scheme that has been on-going since the company’s inception. Which has always taken account of any loses of personnel and can quickly be transferred from the apprenticeship scheme in to full one to one training by skilled personnel. Despite the company chairman and his wife, Iris Maxey, taking a back seat, although both full time working, the next generation of the Maxey family have taken over the reigns through sons David and Simon, the Managing Director and Financial Director respectively – the company retains its longstanding relationship with Vollmer machine tools. As the Managing Director of Ernest Bennett, Mr
38 Panel & Joinery Production SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2013

David Maxey comments: “The first Vollmer machine acquired was in the early 1960’s, a wide bandsaw tensioning machine. This was followed by a sharpening machine; a circular plate saw machine and then a TCT sharpening machine. A major turning point for us was the move from swaged bandsaws to stellite tipped bandsaws. We were the first and UK’s frontrunner using automated technology for the manufacture of stellite tipped wide band saws using the first Vollmer machines and support.” Over the years, the company has purchased and tirelessly used Vollmer technology in there manufacturing processes, until the technology evolves. At this point, the business buys the next level of technology to improve its quality and product portfolio – always staying ahead of the competition. With 60% of Ernest Bennett’s turnover arriving from the production of 60 to 300mm wide bandsaw blades, the company was the first in the UK to invest in Vollmer’s automatic RC100 bandsaw tensioning and levelling machine in 1998. Now running a number of RC100 machines and looking at the next generation model, Ernest Bennett have 40 machines for processing bandsaw blades, mainly Vollmer. As David Maxey continues: “As a manufacturer and service centre we have a fleet of delivery vehicles, including 7.5 tonne lorries, delivering to our customer base on a
daily or weekly schedule. To accommodate such punishing delivery schedules, we have invested heavily in dedicated computerised scheduling software and a purpose built loading bay. Our investment in logistics underlines our commitment to servicing the customer base. However, like any business that has a relentless commitment to supplying its client base with such frequency, we are heavily reliant on the up-time of our machine tools and the quality they produce. To this end, the Vollmer service and support team give us unparalleled confidence levels in their ability to minimise any downtime and issues that may arise with our machines.” With the growth of the company’s circular saw blade business, Bennett’s have in recent years moved from Vollmer’s manually loaded TCT sharpening machines to robot loaded cells that feed the grinding centres. The first robot loaded equipment was installed with a CHD250 grinding machine in 2005. The additional capacity and labour saving was exceptional. As Bennett's run one shift per day, the installation enabled the company to manufacture TCT blades unmanned for 14-15 hours a day as well as the 8 hour manned shift. This increased capacity, profitability, reduced labour costs and enabled the company to 'future proof' its pricing policy. The success of this equipment made such an impact that the innovative business

TOOLING installed a more sophisticated cell in November 2012. The new cell consists of a Vollmer ND250 loading station that has five loading stacks to feed a Vollmer CHF270 side grinding machine and a Vollmer CHD270 top and face grinding machine. The new cell is recognised as a UK first with the set-up being able to fully machine new and service blades automatically. As Mr Maxey continues: “This cell was a significant investment for us and again marks a UK first in the acquisition of Vollmer technology. The new cell automatically checks all tooth angles and geometries and grinds our new blades as well as blades that are returned for servicing and re-grind operations. The ability of the new Vollmer cell to automatically check, grind and polish all top side and face angles has further improved our process capability and product quality beyond that of our competitors. Astonishingly, we can completely mix the stacks with new and regrind blades and just turn the lights out. The following morning the stacking system will be filled with all the new and re-ground TCT blades ready for delivery to the customer."
As the CHD and CHF machines automatically measure the teeth and geometry on each blade prior to processing and also resharpen and re-calibrate the grinding wheels, the precision and quality of each and every blade is beyond customer expectations. By measuring the blade size and geometries, the grinding centres automatically allocate the correct program for each blade to ensure reground blades match the quality of new blades. To identify the blades during the grinding process, Bennett's have invested in a laser etching machine to individually identify all the blades the company manufacture. As Mr Maxey concludes: "The latest Vollmer cell has taken our business to a new level with regard to TCT saw blades. The quality, precision and consistency of our TCT blades are second to none and this improves performance for the end user. Furthermore, the Vollmer cell has improved our efficiency, delivery lead-times, process capability and reliability whilst reducing our labour and production costs. Working with Vollmer for almost half a century has paid dividends for Ernest Bennett's and we are sure Vollmer will

Makita Helps to Repair Historic Timber Frame Essex Barn Makita UK, Britain’s number 1 professional power tool manufacturer, is helping to restore a Grade II listed, 17th Century barn on a dairy farm near Colchester in rural Essex. This is the location of the 2013 Timber Frame Repair course run by the Historic Buildings & Conservation Team at Essex County Council. Essex has a high number of timber framed buildings and the course aims to ensure that craftsmen and women working on these buildings have the necessary knowledge and skill to make essential repairs, some of which are on a grand scale. The Makita DP4003 rotary drill used by coursework instructor Rick Lewis, who also owns the specialist Traditional Oak Carpentry company from his base in Suffolk, is the drill of choice to demonstrate to the paying students. Many of them are skilled builders, carpenters, plasterers and owners of historic properties who wish to learn the importance of traditional building techniques and methods in order to protect the country’s historic buildings. Techniques include traditional timber frame joints including scarf and splice and mortise and tenon joints which are amongst the strongest joints in woodworking.
“Timber frame is a separate craft with its own tools and techniques and an altogether different discipline within carpentry,” says Rick Lewis. “A lot of our methods are early medieval in essence but when you are running a business combining these tools with modern power tools it makes short work of the more laborious and time consuming tasks. The type of timber we use makes huge demands on the tools and for all our projects we specify excellent quality oak rather than cheaper imports. We know the importance of using the right tool for the job.” Makita tools are well suited to the UK framing community. The Makita DP4003 and DS4010 rotary drills provide the slow speed, high torque required to work with strong, dry and dense timber. “These are simple, slow, high performance drills suitable for heavy framing, and they get the job done,” continues Rick. Visit www.traditionaloakcarpentry.co.uk to find out more about Rick Lewis’s work. Repairs on this project include removal and replacement of sole plates, repairs to studs and cutting out of brick plinths, retaining as much historic fabric as possible. “Work here is ongoing,” says Katie Seabright, Historic Buildings Education Consultant, Essex County Council, “and our courses have been taking

SANDERS Kündig Premium Selected at John Ladbury John Ladbury and Company have specialised in handbuilt fitted kitchens since 1978. Quality, design and attention to detail are a top priority to this small, highly productive company, priding itself on the quality of both its furniture and its service. Working from agreed design drawings and using the customer's choice of wood, the skilled craftsmen build the furniture at the Hertfordshire workshop using a combination of traditional skills and hitech machinery. In 2010, director Steve Ladbury invested in a new Kündig Premium 2 1100 RP sander, purchased from Essex-based agent, A12 Machinery. The previous sander had given good service over the course of 20 years, but had reached the end of its life; so Steve began to investigate the market, hoping to improve on the facilities that the company's existing sander could offer. Steve and his colleagues investigated the market carefully. "We went to a Woodmex exhibition [now Working With Wood series of exhibitions] and saw [the Kündig sander] being demonstrated, so it was already in the back of my mind as a possible replacement. We took our time looking at other machines but kept on coming back to the Kündig and to A12 Machinery. We were impressed by the machine's durability and ease of use."
“It is easy to adjust the thickness and the instructions are clear and easy. The quality of the finish is excellent,” says Steve Ladbury.

And the new Kündig Premium has brought John Ladbury and Company a number of advantages: "One man can do the job simply and safely because of the automatic feeding system," reports Steve, "so the sander saves us time and manpower. It is easy to adjust the thickness and the instructions are clear and easy. The quality of the finish is excellent." The Kündig Premium range of wide-belt sanders are specially designed for work with solid wood, panels and veneers, with options available for lacquer sanding. Available with one to three sanding heads and in standard working widths of 650 mm, 1,100 mm, 1,350 mm and 1,600 mm, all the machines have a fixed working height: it is the sanding group that rises or lowers by 3-200 mm, not the workpiece. Steve Ladbury selected a two-head machine with a working width of 1,100 mm. Machines are available with a choice of cutterblock, combi, calibrating roller, standard pad and electronic segmental pads. Steve selected a machine with a roller and pad combination. All new machines now incorporate the 'Eco' energy saving mode, ensuring that power is not wasted when the machine is not in use. All the latest models combine colour touchscreens with manual control units: work processes used frequently can be stored and recalled easily, while at the same time three ergonomically arranged operating buttons allow a series of manual adjustments without the need to work
through a menu: adjust the infinitely variable feed speed, stop and release the feed, infinitely adjust the stock removal, infinitely adjust the machine's opening and automatically store the actual setting. The Enormatic 'smartset' is also standard on all machines for ease of setting and registering the highest point across the full working width. "It's a very easy machine to set up and use," comments Steve Ladbury, adding, "The quality of the finish is excellent." He continues, "We make bespoke kitchens and use the Kündig in every sanding application to do with the production of our hand-made furniture." As well as kitchens, this includes studies, bedrooms, libraries and hi-tech home offices. Since the company was founded in 1978 by John Ladbury, quality design and an attention to detail have been key to its success. The family firm prides itself in designing, building and installing quality furniture, on time and within budget, and for this purpose only the highest quality machinery will do. Kündig fits well within the company's profile. Asked if he would recommend the Kündig sander to others, Steve Ladbury replied, "Absolutely".

SANDERS Viet Solves Round Table Problem at Pendle Woodcraft It’s crucial for any business, and particularly so for smaller manufacturers, that they obtain the best possible value for money when they buy a new piece of equipment. Pendle Woodcraft are satisfied that following a thorough investigation of the crowded sanding machine marketplace, they made the right decision in choosing a Viet S211 artisan wide belt machine. Based in Darwen, Lancashire, Pendle Woodcraft is a small woodworking company which specialises in producing a diverse number of wood-based components, including making prototype samples prior to larger production runs. Its output ranges from seat boards for colleges to beer pull plinths. They needed to replace their 900mm wide belt sander because they had to put hardwood edging on 25mm wide laminated MDF circular table tops, with the hardwood having to be perfectly level with the laminate. Regular work requires going down to 3mm thick on plywood and finishing 150mm thick pieces of hardwood. “There was no way we could have

WOODWASTE ECOGATE Extra Saver at Chilfen Joinery Chilfen Joinery, a leading bespoke joinery specialist serving the commercial and retail fit-out markets, has recently commissioned Dust Control Systems Ltd to install ECOGATE energy-saving technology to improve the efficiency of its existing dust extraction system. Established in 1960, Chilfen is a family business with second generation family members, Russell Childs and Michelle Dear, heading up the company as joint managing directors. Located in Letchworth Garden City, Hertfordshire, the company employs around 70 people within a modern 33,000 sq ft production facility. Over recent years the company has seen strong growth from commercial and retail sectors with more and more fit-out companies recognising the firm’s capabilities and approach to project delivery. Chilfen is able to provide clients with a complete service from design and development through prototyping to quality manufacture. Key investment over the years in plant, facilities and management has transformed Chilfen into a modern, efficient and competitive company. And today, its joinery workshop boasts an impressive range of state of the art machinery including CNC routers, an automatic edge-banding machine, highperformance moulder, panel beam saw and wide-belt sander. As is the case with most workshops, the dust extraction system at Chilfen had been
expanded to serve changes in machinery and extraction fans ran at a constant speed, irrespective of the number of machines operating or the amount of dust to be extracted. Following installation of their latest woodworking machine, Chilfen management decided to look at ways to improve the efficiency of the dust extraction system with the aim of reducing operating costs. Michelle Dear explains: “DCS, who were already contracted to carry out COSHH LEV testing on our Ecogate greenBOX12 units monitor machine activity, and control system, were able to undertake an variable speed drives to adjust fan speed to match demand. energy appraisal of all extraction on the site and determine the extraction determine the optimum speed of the fans. demand for every single machine. In the past, if someone was required to come in over the weekend, and operate just one machine, extraction for the whole factory would be running. DCS did a first class job and carried out all aspects of the project in a very professional way. The net result is that we expect to reduce electricity usage by around 160,000 kilowatt hours per year.”

Furniture Industry Rejoices at Biomass Subsidies Capping Announcement The British Furniture Confederation (BFC) welcomed the announcements in the media that there will be a turnaround in the Government’s policy of subsidising UK power stations to generate electricity from burning wood. It is reported that the Government will announce it is proposing that subsidies for bespoke biomass burning plants should be capped at 400 MW. It will end subsidies for biomass burning in existing stations by 2027. The BFC has been leading a campaign against the policy on behalf of the industry, following the affect of the subsidies on the rise in the price of timber and its devastating knock-on effect on UK furniture manufacturing. The BFC has been challenging the policy since 2010, publishing the report ‘Biomass subsidies and their impact on the British Furniture Industry’ in 2011, handing in petitions to No 10 and No 11 Downing Street, and most recently teaming up with the RSPB, Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth and industry stakeholders in writing to The Times decrying the subsidies. BFC Chairman, Paul von der Heyde, said: “We welcome the announcement today; this is a victory for common sense and a result of the industry’s lobbying, which helped to highlight the issues caused by the biomass subsidies. Government subsidies for large biomass power companies have driven the demand for virgin timber, resulting in increases in its price. It never made sense that virgin timber was being burned on a large scale rather than being used to produce products, such as furniture, before having a second life. “We are disappointed that the full removal of subsidies will not take place until 2027. We will continue to pressurise for this to happen sooner to allow the UK furniture industry to compete on a level playing field with the rest of the world. “We would like to thank everyone involved for their support, including the media organisations that promoted the story and, in particular, Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Furniture Industry Group, Stephen McPartland MP, who leant his considerable support to our campaign.”

WOODWASTE Dustraction Commissions New uPVC Waste Extraction Installation for Truframe Ltd at Melton Mowbray Dustraction has completed a new swarf extraction layout for Truframe, the country’s largest fabricator of the innovative Liniar uPVC window and door profile system. The installation is a spin-off from one that Dustraction completed at Amari Plastics for their sheet cutting operations in 2010; Dustraction attended to all COSHH/LEV needs to meet all Health and Safety Executive requirements. The new Truframe installation is based around a Dustrax No. 27 WWRV filter: waste is continuously transferred to the end of the hopper section by a floor-mounted high efficiency extraction fanset and is discharged via a heavy duty rotary valve airseal into two large capacity bulker bags for recycling. The filter has a 108m2 of effective filter cloth area giving a filtration velocity of around 2m/min at the air handling volume specified. Dustraction’s new installation at Truframe is providing a plastic waste extraction to service two existing BJM cutting and prep lines and ducting August 2013. The Dustrax No 27 filter will give Truframe around 8,000cfm extraction capacity, enough to cater for Truframe’s growth and expansion. An automatic shaker system is incorporated for the periodic removal of uPVC waste from the filter sleeves, as in Dustraction’s woodwaste layouts, and is powered by a supplementary 0.37kW unidirectional electric motor. The filter media is fitted with access points for random inspection and maintenance. A Dustrax No. 33 paddle-blade fanset has been included to handle plastic waste in chip form with a 22kW TEFC motor; all of the filter equipment is CE marked and conforms to the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations in its latest amended forms. uPVC is widely claimed not to biologically decompose and to be resistant to weathering, with consequently low maintenance cost requirements, particularly in comparison with soft and
