ICONIC A simple, symbolic icon for NYC that functions intuitively as a bicycle rack. A strong and powerful form that relates to the wheel and helps to communicate its use. The unfixed free standing look creates a light and free feeling of movement. FUNCTIONAL Hoop provides points all along its profile allowing secure locking of all sizes of bicycle frames. The slim line design also allows it to be placed in many of the crowded city spaces. LONGEVITY Consideration was focused on the creation of a design that could stand the test of time. The purity of the circular form was deemed to achieve this. REPETITION The simple form allows multiple Racks to be placed close together with out becoming an, ‘Eye sore’, ‘ tacky looking’, ‘attention seeking’ or looking overcrowded.
MATERIAL The design should have a permanent look in the NYC environment rather than something that looks temporary or secondary. Material choice was vital in trying to achieve this and inspiration was taken from other permanent street features such as man hole covers or park benches made from cast iron. Cast Iron is chosen for strength (tried and tested), character, permanence and material solidity. SAFE Consideration was given as much to the pedestrians as the cyclists! The design as a whole and in its details has no sharp edges or moving parts that could cause harm to people or damage to bicycles. INSPIRATION The classic quote ‘You know for kids’ from the 1994 NYC Coen Brothers movie the Hudsucker Proxy translates here to ‘you know for bikes’ :)
