CAMPUS Issue 5, August 2018

CEO's welcome

It’s been a busy year at The George Alexander Foundation.

Our new Program Coordinator, Mairead Phillips has been traveling around Australia and visiting our interstate partners, both new and established. So far this year Mairead and other members of the GAF team have visited Townsville, Brisbane, Wollongong, Canberra, Hobart and Launceston, and have had the pleasure of meeting our inaugural groups of scholars from James Cook University, the University of Wollongong and Australian National University

We also recently held our very first GAF trivia night in Melbourne. It was a close and competitive race, but in the end the (aptly named) Gold Diggers emerged victorious. It was

great to see scholars, fellows and alumni from different institutions getting to know each other and working together (not to mention nearly everyone getting full marks on the George Alexander trivia round!)

We hope you're feeling settled into semester two, and wish you all the best with the rest of the university year

Let's get quizzical

GAF Trivia Night

GAF trivia couldn't have gone better – there was a great turnout, and everybody brought their A game. The competition was fierce but fair, and we would like to commend everyone who came on their sportsmanship and enthusiasm. Congratulations to the Gold Diggers on their victory, You're a Quizzard Harry on a close second, and Fifty Shades of Citrus on a respectable third placing.

To all our winners – remember to tag us cashing in your prizes!

Thanks to everybody who made it, and we hope to see you at the next GAF event.

Instagram competition

Alright guys. We're giving away a pair of AIAIAI TMA-2 DJ Preset headphones, and all you have to do to be in the running is follow us on Instagram (if you're not following us already), and tag us @gaf_community in a photo of you getting involved in your community

That could mean volunteering, playing or coaching for a sports club, or participating in a club or society at uni - whatever community means to you! The winner will be announced at the end of October. Get tagging!

Spotlight on... Work experience

Work experience can be a great way to develop skills, explore different career options, and get involved in the community.

We spoke to a few of our scholars about their experiences with placement and volunteering, both locally and interstate, and how it’s broadened their minds and horizons.

ISS Institute Fellowships

Microcinema, big visions

Daniel Schultheis was awarded a GAF fellowship in 2013 to investigate microcinema in Europe, and how low budget development and production support schemes allow for the delivery of successful micromovies.

The fellowship led him to establish Cinespace, a non-profit dedicated to training and collaborating with new filmmakers and communities to create greater diversity on screen and behind the scenes.

We're pretty excited to announce that two GAF ISSI Fellowship Reports have now been published.

Prudence Rothwell's report, A Study of the Farmer's Market Sector in the United States, is now available on the ISS Institute's website, along with Craig Middleton's report Political History and Museum Practice: Collecting, Engaging, Exhibiting.

Craig (pictured) will also be presenting at the ISS Institute's Illuminate Series: Conserving Heritage, Constructing Knowledge & Building Awareness, at the end of August - tickets are still available!

Applications for the 2018 George Alexander Foundation Fellowships open on August 20. The fellowships aim to resource young leaders in the areas of environment and sustainability, alternative energy, conservation and/or education, as well as artisan and traditional trades, to undertake a study tour overseas and bring back their learnings and knowledge to share with others in their sector. Check out the ISS Institute's website for more information!

We had the pleasure of meeting 2018 UTAS scholar Natalie Gaffney earlier this year, at the University of Tasmania's Launceston campus.

We were inspired by her passion for STEM education (she's studying to become a Maths and Science teacher), and her plan to return and teach in her local community. Her story was featured in an article in The Advocate - you can check it out here
