OneoftheprimaryaimsoftheCulturalTrustistoprovidemeaningfulsupporttotalented emergingartists.Inlinewiththisaim,andinrecognitionofthegrowingcostoftraveland professionaldevelopmentprograms,themaximumgrantamountgoingforwardwillbe increasedto$10,000.Webelievethatthiswillallowustosupportourgranteesmorefully, andtocontinuetoplayouruniqueandimportantroleintheAustralianartslandscape.

Inthiseditionof The Coronet,wealsospotlighttheworkofAngelicaMesiti,theinaugural winneroftheIanPotterMovingImageCommission.Itisexcitingtoseethegrowing relevanceandappreciationofMesiti's The Calling (2013-14),IPMIC’sfirstcommissioned work,whichhasmostrecentlybeenacquiredbytheNationalGalleryofAustralia.

Webelievethatitisimportanttosharethesuccessesofourpastgrantees,andthewaysin whichaCulturalTrustgranthasoftenplayedapivotalroleintheircreativeand professionaljourneys.Wehopeyoudrawinspirationfromthediverseachievementsand storiesofthegranteesfeaturedbelow.

ThesecondroundofCulturalTrustgrantsfor2017saw19emergingartistsawarded $119,335topursueawiderangeofprofessionaldevelopmentopportunitiesaroundthe globe.Ourgranteeswilltraveltoelevendifferentcountries,includingtheNetherlands, Iceland,Canada,FinlandandtheUnitedKingdom,toundertakeavarietyofmentorships, residenciesandstudyprograms.

Thisround,twoemergingcircusartistshavereceivedCulturalTrustgrantstotravel overseasandfurthertheirpractice.AngeliqueRosswillundertakeamentorshipwiththe innovativecontemporarycircuscompany,TumbleCircus,inBelfast,NorthernIreland,while handbalancerAmiePatchingwillcommenceaDiplomaofCollegialStudiesinCircusArts atL’ÉcoleNationaledeCirquedeMontreal,Canada.

Audio-visualartistandinauguralIPMICwinnerAngeliaMesitihasbeenkeepingbusythis year.In2017alone,Mesiti’sworkshavebeenexhibitedatUniversityofQueenslandArt Museum(The Calling),AnnaSchwartzGallery,Melbourne(Tossed by the Waves), Artspace,Sydney(Relay League),aswellasatTheNationalGalleryofVictoria,whichis currentlyshowcasingacollectionofhermajorworks.Shehasalsobeenannouncedas oneoftheartiststobefeaturedatthe 2018AdelaideBiennialofAustralianArt Angelica Mesiti: A Communion of Stranger Gestures,thefirstsignificantpublicationdedicatedto chroniclingMesiti’spractice,willbereleasedbyBlackIncinOctober

MesitiwasawardedtheinauguralIanPotterMovingImageCommissionin2012,which culminatedin The Calling,athree-channelvideoinstallationthatexploresthewhistling languagesofthreecommunitiesinTurkey,GreeceandTheCanaryIslands,and demonstratesMesiti’songoingfascinationwithnon-verbalmodesofcommunication.Since itsopeningin2014, The Calling hasbeenshownwidelyacrossAustraliaand internationally,andwasmostrecentlyacquiredbyTheNationalGalleryofAustralia.

‘TheMovingImageCommissionisintendedtoenableamid-careerartisttoproducean ambitiousnewmovingimageworkandtaketheirpracticetothenextlevel,soitis gratifyingtoseethatsincebeingawardedtheinauguralCommission,AngelicaMesiti’s workhasreceivedgrowingacclaimandrecognition,bothinAustraliaandabroad,’says CulturalTrustProgramManagerLouiseArkles.

WiththesupportoftheCulturalTrust, SamwilltraveltotheUnitedKingdomto undertakeaseriesofresidencieswith communityartsorganisations,andto researchmodesofparticipatorytheatre thatwelcomecommunityandfoster reciprocityandinclusivityinthearts.

Attheripeageof20,AmiePatchingis alreadyahighlyskilledcircusartist,with overtenyearsoftrainingandexperience.

Amiewillnowtakeherpracticetothenext levelasshecommencesaDiplomaof CollegialStudiesinCircusArtsatL'École NationaledeCirquedeMontreal,where shewillcontinueherspecialisationin handbalancingandmakethemostof Montreal'svibrantcircusscene.
