TwooftheartiststoreceiveCulturalTrustgrantsinthelatestfundingroundgotusthinking aboutwhatitmeanstobeemerging.KymMaxwellhaslongjuggledherartisticpractice withteaching,andisnowbringingherbackgroundineducationtobearonhercreative work.BenNoblehasbeenperformingforyears,andisfinallyatthepointofwantingto dedicatehimselffull-timetoacting.Wehavefeaturedtheirstoriesandexperiencesas 'laterstage'emergingartistsbelow

'As I teach it inspires my practice, but for a while I abandoned art and only taught for a sustained lifestyle. I re-engaged with art happily being provoked by the exciting non-physical encounters I participated in and observed as an educator as well as how educational environments informed people about learning and inter-social possibilities.'

'I’ve always believed my career would be suited for when I’m a little older. I didn’t fit the castings for younger men. I didn’t have the right look for roles that were written or being produced at that time.'

'We’ve probably earned a few stripes over the years, so maybe it's fair to say we’re moving out of what would most likely be defined as "emerging”, although it’s kind of hard to say what we are now?! It doesn’t feel as though mid-career would be quite it yet, so somewhere in the liminal space between these two (difficult to define) spaces!'

Thisyear,TheIanPotterCulturalTrust welcomed46newgranteestoa communitythatnowexceeds1,600 talentedartists.Theytravelledto18 countriesaroundtheworld,undertaking learningopportunities,gainingskillsand buildingnetworks,andworkingwith leadersintheircreativefields.

AstheCulturalTrustwrapsupits25th year,wereviewthejourneysofsomeof ourpastgrantees.Throughspotlightingthe achievementsofahandfulofpastCultural Trustrecipients,wehopetoshedlighton howtheprofessionaldevelopment experiencessupportedbytheCultural Trustushergranteesintothenextphase oftheircareers.

PastgranteeWilliamGardinerhasbeen announcedasoneofsixcomposerstobe awardedaBundanonTrustPrelude residency Theresidencywillprovide Williamwithaccesstothehistoric BeaumontCottage,eightkilometresfrom Adelaide'sCBDandsurroundedby picturesqueheritagegardens,andtime andspaceforthecreationofnewwork.
