Our cover car this month is Brighton Herbie, a beautifully restored VW Beetle whose owner has shared his story for you to enjoy. Thank you Alan. May saw lots of local car events and we have photos from the Guardamar Show and the Day of the Driver in Catral. We were at the Phoenix Ace Cafe as usual on the first Sunday of May and were overwhelmed by the variety of cars on show. There were some outrageous spoilers there and they have made their own mini article on page 19. There was a large exhibition at the IFA in Alicante showing new and used cars and our roving reporter Richard O’Rourke went along to find the pick of the cars for us to look at. Richard also rounds up the motorsport, including the thrills and spills in the Spanish Formula One Grand Prix. El Guiri follows on from his trip to the World Superbikes in Aragon in April with a report on where he stayed, the picturesque town of Morella. Rumour has it that he’s off to see the Italian round of the WSB... watch this space! Jill Carter researches into the future of motoring with a look at alternative energy sources, we conclude our look at supercar interiors and have some more gold cars, yes that’s gold. Happy motoring! Alternative Energy Sources by Jill Carter

The internal combustion engine has successfully run on fossil fuel since its invention and application to propel the motor car. Humans have known of the existence of this material for thousands of years but did not have a use for it. Now the modern world is dependent upon petrol, diesel and other by-products of this ancient legacy with the increasing voice for green fuels to combat the “Greenhouse Effect”. This is a dwindling natural resource which is expected to run out during the lifetime of some of our readers. The imagination of scientists and inventors has been stretched beyond belief in what has been considered and I have endeavoured to describe some of the more likely processes. Others have been more concerned in finding a means of propulsion that is not attacked by the Revenue Department.

Wine

HRH Charles, Prince of Wales was given a 1969 Aston Martin Volante by his mother, The Queen, for his twenty-first birthday. The Prince is well known for his “Green” environmental ideas so it should be no surprise that all of his personal vehicles have been adapted to run on bio-fuels. His Aston Martin travels an average of three hundred miles a year and this is achieved on excess wine production. The EU sets strict quotas on production and any excess wine may not be sold for drinking. Companies such as Green Fuels, who prepared the biofuel for Prince Charles' car, use wine produced at vineyards that can't be sold for consumption. If the grapes have already been fermented into wine, the wine can be further distilled by boiling. High heats reduce the volume of liquid and preserve the more potent alcohol content to produce a form of ethanol. In the case of the Prince's Aston Martin, the fuel was about 85 percent ethanol combined with 15 percent petrol, or diesel.

Alcohol

By the end of 2014, Sweden had registered 243,136 vehicles running on ethanol fuel compared with 717 in 2001. Sweden has been using confiscated alcohol from their Customs Department to make ethanol fuel to power their buses in Stockholm. Smuggling of alcohol is big business and up to a decade ago, the confiscated alcohol was destructed until someone had the idea to make fuel from a "free" product. Sweden has stated that it is it´s intention to only invest in transportation methods that operate only on renewable fuels. The first bus in the fleet was delivered in 1989 and since then Scania, a Swedish based engine and fleet developer, have delivered approximately 700 units operating on ED95, a fuel made up of 95% ethanol and 5% ignition improver (latest figures July 2010). The ethanol-based diesel engine's main difference comes from the combustion pressure in the ethanol engine. In the ethanol engine, the pressure is lower and needs to be blended with an ignition enhancer. The bus fuel comes from grainethanol plants in Europe and is also shipped in from Brazil. Scania also provides buses to Great Britain, Spain, Italy, Belgium, Norway and other countries.

Ethanol is a clear liquid that packs a lot of energy into a usable, storable, and transportable form — only petroleum can compete with ethanol on an energy-per-volume basis. But ethanol has an added benefit in that it’s oxygenated, meaning it has oxygen in its molecular structure, which results in a cleaner burn. Compared to gasoline, ethanol emits about 20 % less hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide. Next month I will investigate the more unusal and bizarre fuels that have been used to power vehicles.

Lotus Evora 400 Hethel Edition. Colin Chapman moved Lotus from its cramped Hertfordshire HQ into its first purpose-built facility in Hethel, Norfolk 50 years ago and the firm is celebrating this in 2016 with a limited Hethel Edition Evora 400. Offered in three iconic Lotus-themed heritage colours – Essex Blue, Motorsport Black and Racing Green – each hue boasts lightweight silver forged alloy wheels, contrasting brake calipers, bespoke graphics and, inside, either black or red leather. The £75,500 special is otherwise as per the regular Evora 400.

Top Gear Returns. BBC's revamped series of Top Gear returns to our screens on Sunday May 29th. The show will be co-presented by Chris Evans, Matt LeBlanc, Eddie Jordan and Sabine Schmitz. Episode 1's guests will be Batman v Superman actor Jesse Eisenberg and chef Gordon Ramsay. Although we are not sure which segment the two will be participating in, it's likely one or both could feature in Star in a Rallycross Car, which is the Star in a Reasonably Priced Car's replacement. Elsewhere, Evans is to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Tom Cruise film Top Gun by driving a 645bhp Dodge Viper ACR in a race against Schmitz's Chevy Corvette Z06. GT Sport for PS4. GT Sport or Gran Turismo 7 on the PS4 is the latest version of the highly acclaimed racing game. With a decent amount of cars and tracks, GT Sport is bringing in a lot more features that show just how ambitious Polyphony Digital and Sony are this time round. From innovative social elements to a 'virtual automotive museum' and two FIA-approved racing championships, GT Sport doesn’t want to emulate racing, it wants to exist in parallel to it. Look out for it in the shops from November.

Audi's Clever New Air Con. Audi A1, A3, Q3, and TT models will come with an innovative new air conditioning system. The newly-designed filter will remove particulates and harmful gases from the air as well as neutralising virtually all allergens. Scientifically-developed to provide virtually allergen-free air for occupants, the new filter boasts an outer layer which uses either plant-derived, bioactive polyphenols (a substance which attach itself to the allergens’ receptors) or by modifying the protein structure of the allegens. The resulting effect is a significant improvement to the air quality. Whilst spending a day in Brighton earlier this year, we saw this beautiful VW Beetle sitting in the sun in The Lanes and spoke to its owner, Alan Horwood. In his own words, he has kindly shared his story with us... so sit back and enjoy his journey with his car.

The restoration involved replacing all the rusty metal (and there was a lot of rusty metal!) and all the life expired components with original second hand salvage parts, NOS parts (new old stock) where available or good quality repro parts. Fortunately for me. VW Heritage is only 9 miles away and i have been a regular customer... My local VW restorers Beetle Werks did 80 hours of welding and fabrication work on the shell before painting it. A lot of the Herbie specific details I sourced from Lovebugfans.com including a set of 'movie accurate' vinyls from one of its members. The information on their website is invaluable for anyone building their own Herbie.

I had always had a soft spot for Herbie and one day in May 2011, while I was searching ebay for a 1.6 RC Herbie I spotted a Beetle with stripes and a 53 for sale... and ended up owning him. He had been bought by a father for his 10 year old daughter in 2005 because she loved the film 'Herbie: Fully loaded'. They patched him up and painted him in Herbie colours as a father-daughter project. On a closer inspection, I realised that it needed more work than I first thought.. So I immediately started a strip down and rebuild. The Beetle was registered in October 1968, so he started life as a 1969 model year 1500, which meant I had quite a lot of 'backdating' to do... Herbie is a 1963 deluxe sunroof 1200 Beetle, painted in VW L87 'Pearl Weiss' . Also, 1963 was the last year that you could get a fabric sunroof as a factory fit on standard models. It remained an optional extra on the standard EU model until 1967, but is rare! All Beetles after the 1965 model year differed from the 1963 model. The most obvious changes were slightly larger windows, wipers that park on the opposite side of the screen and a slightly different quarter light arrangement.

Most men in their mid-forties buy a motorbike or fast convertible as part of a midlife crisis. I actually sold my motorbike to help fund the restoration. What started out as a £4,000 project to return this beetle to a roadworthy condition ended up closer to £12,000 to turn him into as close a Herbie replica as I could manage. It took 4 months in total.

BRIGHTON HERBIE

What do you call a facelift that makes you look older? Herbie is a racing Beetle and was first seen in the 1968 Walt Disney film ‘The Love Bug’. He has a mind of his own and is capable of driving himself, with hilarious consequences. Other films followed in the series:

I use 'Brighton Herbie' as my second car when I have errands to run in town. The traffic wardens are far more lenient with Herbie than they would be of my Peugeot 307.

Some of the changes I made included replacing the front wings, adding US spec headlamps, US spec bumpers with the 'towel rail' over-riders, a new rear engine cover with a small number plate light housing and new rear light clusters. Also I swapped my slotted bonnet to a smooth 1200 bonnet. I sourced the sunroof from Sliding Ragtops in the US. It is the same size and shape as an original two fold 'Golde' sunroof that was fitted to the 1963 Beetle. I found a guy in New Zealand that 'spins' aluminium trims that clip over the wheels to hide the 8 slots in the 4 lug wheels and gives the wheels the correct Herbie 'smoothie look' that was finished off with some unbranded baby moon hubcaps to make the wheels emulate the older style.

I evidently didn't have enough Herbie toys when i was a kid in the 1970's. Brighton Herbie started as an impulse buy on ebay that quickly turned into a hobby and I'm sure, some would say, an obsession!

The Caravan went through Hurchillo, Arneva, the centre of Orihuela taking the road to Almoradi, La Campaneta then through the centre of Rafal and on to Catral arriving in the recinta of the Fiestas of the Barrio of San Jose. The display of the vehicles complimented the Fiesta and gave enjoyment to the public while the drivers enjoyed a free drink and roll. The night ended about midnight with a magnificent firework display celebrating Saint Cristopher of drivers.

This traditional has been going for a long time and the first time I saw it in 1990 it was on the Spanish Televison conducted by the Orihuela bishop. When I participated the Romera had become such an event that we travelled to Torrevieja where it included a fly pass by the Aguila Roja display team from Murcia. Unfortunately due to the crisis, funding has been cut back but the Real Orden hopes that this will again become a regular part of the Fiesta in Catral. The first Classic Club to be formed in this area was the 600 & Classic Club Orihuela with over 150 members. A group of us started an online club to help those that are not permanent residents in keeping in touch with what is going on in the Spanish classic scene or need help with owning a classic in Spain. The Motorsport Month by Richard O'Rourke

2015 Formula One Nico Rosberg won the Russian GP and in doing so became only the fourth man in history to win seven races on the trot and so equal the record of Alberto Ascari, Michael Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel. It was an easy win for Rosberg who led the entire race having started from pole and bagged the fastest lap into the bargain to emphasise his dominance. Hamilton finished second having started from tenth following a penalty and Raikkonen was third for Ferrari. The Red Bull of Kvyat hit Vettel twice in as many corners on the first lap to force the German to retire while the Williams’ of Bottas and Massa were fourth and fifth. Better news for McLaren who are at last showing signs of being competitive with Alonso in sixth and Button tenth. Good news too for Renault who, thanks to a fine drive from Kevin Magnusson, got a points scoring finish as did Grosjean (once again) for the Haas team. A few days after the Russian GP came the news that Russian driver Daniil Kvyat had been demoted by Red Bull to the junior Toro Rosso team and Max Verstappen had made the move in the opposite direction. Kvyat had indeed blotted his copybook in Sochi but that alone was not the cause of the demotion. World Rally Championship Rally Portugal was the scene of the second WRC win for Kris Meeke and Paul Nagle in the development Citroen DS3. Meeke took the lead on the second stage and never relinquished it despite pressure from the VWs of Ogier and Mikkelsen. Club Torrevieja Clásicos Red In 2007 I started an Annual Drivers Awareness Campaign and ran it for the next 5 years. It was launched by a Classic Encuentro in Torrevieja Port area. From the feed back I produced “Driving Safely in Spain” information sheet that gave advice, Traffic rules plus 50 Spanish/English words. In 2014 due to the large number of Traffic law changes I produced an information sheet for visitors and non residents of a list of some differences between UK & Spanish traffic laws and a brief explanation of the different Spanish Police, plus weather hazzards.
