Editors Notes:

It’s events galore this month as we show you what’s been happening on the Costa Blanca, there’s Minis, Beetles and the shiny new cars at Firauto. Bruce Rowbotham looks into the history of safety in F1 and champions a personal hero of his, Sid Watkins. Jill Carter runs down the top ten reasons for vehicle breakdowns and El Guiri gets a test ride on a Ducati Diavel Carbon....nice. Richard O’Rourke tells us tales from the service area in his series of articles about life as a motorsport photographer and gives us the run down on all the current motorsport. The motorcycling world is mourning the loss of Nicky Hayden who sadly passed away in May after he was hit while training on his bicycle. We pay homage to him on page 17 along with David Hudson’s information about bicycle dangers and what the Spanish government are doing about it. Due to personal reasons and with regret, we are selling this magazine, see page 23 for all the details. Finally, please please please read page 15 and let your friends and family know what to do when buying a car from someone on the roadside. Be aware and be careful. You can find the car you are looking for right here at one of our dealers. Happy motoring! Professor

When the original Honda NSX made its debut in 1989, it forever changed the supercar segment by offering dramatic supercar styling, performance and dynamics and breaking new ground in terms of quality, ergonomics and usability. Now making use of advanced new technologies, such as a lightweight yet rigid all-aluminium monocoque body and chassis, mated to a mid-mounted transverse V6 engine, the original NSX challenged conventional supercar wisdom. Its high revving engine featured a number of innovative production technologies, including forged pistons, titanium connecting rods and VTEC valve train. The NSX's Sport Hybrid power unit offers exceptional horsepower and torque with a broad powerband for tremendous throttle response and acceleration. There are seven different primary heat sources - along with the 3.5-ltr V6 engine, two turbochargers and the nine-speed Dual Clutch Transmission.

Featuring a wide V-angle of 75 degrees for a low centre of gravity, the NSX's twin-turbocharged V6 engine achieves an ideal balance between power production, compactness and reduced mass. With a displacement of 3.5 litres, it combines both direct and port fuel injection, along with Dual Variable Valve Timing Control (Dual VTC) to deliver optimal camshaft phasing. Dual VTC allows for precision combustion control at all engine speeds while simultaneously achieving high power output and uncompromised performance at high engine speeds. The C-pillars extend outward from the sloping rear roofline so that air flows down the sides of the vehicle.

Openings at the front of the vehicle supply cooling airflow across the key heat exchangers.

Prices start from around 143.500â‚Ź for the basic model...

Back in the 60s and 70s cars were very distinctive and it was easy to to tell the makes apart. Fast forward to this decade and it seems that cars that were once different have now morphed into the same as the other cars on the road. Take the Citroen C4 which launched in 2004 with a sloping back, whereas the latest model could be any car. Crossovers are the same, especially the Rav4 and Tucson, you would have to look closely to tell the new models apart.

MOTORS IN THE NEWS Lotus Bought by China's Geely. Geely has bought a 49.9% stake in Malaysian carmaker Proton, which owns the sports car maker Lotus. Geely, which also owns the London Taxi Company and Sweden's Volvo Car Group, will take a 51% stake in Lotus. Jean-Marc Gales, who became Lotus chief executive in 2014, has been trying to return the Norwich-based company to consistent profit after two decades in the red. The Lotus car company runs an engineering consultancy selling sports car technology. Geely is expected to use its research in composite materials and lightweight technology to help it comply with increasingly demanding emission regulations in China. Proton was founded in 1983 by former Malaysian prime minister Mahathir Mohamad, but its fortunes have dwindled from national champion to being a minor player even in its own domestic market. Geely aims to produce three million cars by 2020 across all its operations.

Ferrari 275 GTB/C Speciale The Most Valuable Car in the World? One of the most coveted cars in the world lost its driver in May when 86 year old millionaire Preston Henn, a Florida flea market magnate, car collector and racing team owner died. The 1964 Ferrari 275 GTB/C Speciale was designed by Pininfarina, and took Europe's racetracks by storm in the early 1960s. In 1965 this car won in its class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Insiders say that the car could well be the world’s first car to break the $100 million mark at auction, provided it finds its way there. For Sale Barry Sheene's Bike. The Heron Suzuki RGB500 that was raced by Barry Sheene in the 1983 Grand Prix season is for sale on eBay for £120,000. The bike was raced by Sheene in 1983 and in 1984 by Mick Grant for Heron. A bargain for the right person.

Battery Solution? Israeli firm StoreDot claims to have a solution to the electric car charging time problem with their FlashBattery. It’s a unique battery for electric cars that they claim fully charges in just five minutes and can keep a car going for up to 300 miles. They demonstrated the battery to the public at the CUBE Tech Fair in Berlin. This battery is significantly different from a traditional lithium-ion battery; according to the company, it uses “proprietary organic compounds” and avoids the use of graphite. The chemical compound that StoreDot has come up with is not flammable and claims to have a higher temperature of combustion. That means not only does it charge faster than li-ion batteries, but it’s also safer to have in your car. “Fast Charging is the critical missing link needed to make electric vehicles ubiquitous." StoreDot co-founder and CEO Dr. Doron Myersdorf said. We will wait and see if this is a viable product that really will revolutionise the electric car world. Claims about energy storage and generation for electric cars have been made before and not fulfilled. But if StoreDot can do it, it would be a big step forward for the industry.

The Top 10 Reasons For Vehicle Breakdowns Jill Carter It is that time of the year when winter is behind us and the days grow longer that thoughts turn to making longer journeys in the car for pleasure. Motor Racing Is Dangerous – It Says So On The Ticket by Bruce Rowbotham Such haphazard thinking prevailed until 1978 when Formula One's Czar and Ringmaster, Bernie Ecclestone, quietly contacted Sid for an informal chat. They had never met before but Bernie recognised that a high and consistent level of medical care should be available at all of the 16 GP events that year. The logistical problems were huge, professional licensing and insurance varied country to country. Local resentment was inevitable, not only from the local medical teams but also from the track owners, now faced with the cost of improving track facilities and spending money on more staff. At the German Grand Prix held at the Hockenheim circuit the medical centre was an old converted bus, staffed by 2 doctors, neither was an anaesthetist and the crew even camped in it overnight. If a helicopter was required for an evacuation they called on the Autobahn traffic team to help out, but only if they were available. As the cars began to line up on the starting grid Sid was refused entry to the Race Control. Bernie got to hear of this and gave a decisive ultimatum to the organisers. He threatened to stand in front of the cars on the grid until he saw Sid in the window of Race Control - otherwise he would send the drivers home. The organisers capitulated immediately and Sid got his way. The following year Twenty minutes later and he was still trapped with no sign of any Hockenheim had a new and well equipped medical centre and a further help. Hill and Bondurant stripped off his now fuel soaked overalls lap to ensure immediate help was available in the event of a collision as the corrosive fuel was causing skin burns. Eventually he was taken as everyone sprinted off the line and into the first corner. There had to what passed as the Medical centre and left on a canvass stretcher in been so many disasters when a car stalled on the starting grid and was a bare room, the floor littered with cigarette ends. From here he was rammed from behind, or huge pile-ups had occurred as cars jostled for finally transferred by ambulance to hospital. Thus began Stewart's position at the first corner. fanatical campaign to improve safety in motor sport. Something that frequently put him at odds with many, fellow drivers and organisers In 2004 Sid retired as Formula One's Chief medical officer at the age alike. How dangerous is Motor Racing? - Well three times World Formula One Champion, Sir Jackie Stewart recounts that 57 of his friends and colleagues were killed in the period 1963 – 73 often in horrific circumstances, whilst doing the same thing as he did every weekend. The statistics were stark: For a racing driver in that era death was a probability rather than a possibility. His own experience after he crashed at Spa in 1966 is chilling. In heavy rain he was in third place and driving at 170mph when his BRM hit a stream of water washing across the track. His car left the track, uprooted a telegraph pole, flattened a wooden shed, careered over an eight foot drop and came to rest in a farmyard. Stewart was now lapsing in and out of consciousness having broken his collarbone, a selection of ribs and had internal bleeding. Worse still he was trapped in the car and fuel was leaking over him. There were no marshals on hand and he was only found when fellow racers Graham Hill and Bob Bondurant also crashed at the same place, thankfully without injury. His woes were not over yet as he was still trapped and the tub of the car began to fill with fuel, any spark would have been the end for all three of them.

Largest Collection of Classic Jaguars Ever in Spain

After 18 months of planning The Big One 2017 actually happened at the end of April. A joint event between The Jaguar Enthusiasts Club, Spain, The Jaguar Enthusiasts Club, South of France and some members from the JEC in the UK. The result was 100 cars, but as a result of 3 breakdowns, only 97 fabulous Jaguars cleaned and polished actually made it with 201 very enthusiastic Jaguar owners. Many of the participants took two or three days or more to travel to and from their home to the event in Parador de Leon in Northern Spain. This is Parador’s flag ship 5 star hotel, a stunning 16th Century Military Headquarters that has been converted into a glorious luxury hotel. Special permission had been granted by Leon Town Hall to park this outstanding collection of Big Cats on the amazing St. Marco’s square in front of the hotel. To see these wonderful cars in such a fabulous location made “an old man” very happy, what an amazing sight. I am not going to try and mention all the cars, there were so many that deserved a special mention but, to do them justice would take up too much room in this article. If you want to see just some of them, visit our web site www.jec-spain.com and visit the Events pages and the Gallery pages where you can see examples of “just the best motors in the world”! by Eric Arnold

In the last few days we have been made aware of a very worrying situation. We want to share it with you, our readers, so you can avoid this happening to you.

Our Advice: If you are buying a car from the side of the road, beware. Private car sales happen every day and we have classified adverts in this magazine where private individuals sell their cars. You should fill out a contrato de compraventa, you will need a copy of the sellers identification documents/passport to transfer the car into your name. It is not advisable to let a stranger do the transfer without you present since they will need your original documents. Companies such as Orke (page 2) can carry out an hpi check to ensure that there are no debts associated with the car prior to you purchasing it and we would always advise that you use a company, such as Orke to do the document transfer. If the seller implies that they work for a car dealer, then insist that the sale takes places at the dealer's forecourt. Buy a car from a dealer, all the car dealers in this magazine are reputable and we have heard only positve feedback on them over the years. You will receive a years warranty on engine and gearbox, which is the law in Spain. The sale contract will say this and have a dealers stamp, company cif number and logo.

THE MOTORSPORT MONTH by Richard O'Rourke 2017 Formula One The Russian GP in Sochi was a landmark race for Valtteri Bottas as it marked his 1st win in 81 GP starts. He jumped into the lead from third on the grid and stayed ahead of the two Ferraris until the finish with Vettel hot on his heels but unable to get past and Raikkonen a distant third ahead of Hamilton who was having an off day complaining that his Mercedes didn’t handle as he would have liked. Bottas still has to convince me that he is a hard racer but this display went a long way to showing that he can withstand pressure and get the job done. After the race Bottas was warmly congratulated by all and sundry except fellow countryman, Raikkonen, who just about managed a cool handshake but that’s Kimi I suppose. Vettel now leads the championship by 13 points from Hamilton.

MotoGP The Moto GP de Espana in Jerez was the 3000th top flight World Championship bike race since the very first on the Isle of Man in 1949 and was celebrated in style by Honda who took the first 3 places on the grid and a 1-2 in the race. Dani Pedrosa has had a tough time recently but he came alive in Jerez and converted a pole position into a fine win ahead of team mate and world champion Marc Marquez. The Spanish top three was completed by Jorge Lorenzo on the Ducati while Rossi was 10th and clings onto the championship lead ahead of Viñales and Marquez. The historic Le Mans track was the venue for the Moto GP de France and what a race it was. Local hero Johann Zarco led from the start on his Tech 3 Yamaha and held onto the lead for half the race until Viñales and Rossi on works Yamahas eventually found a way past. Marquez was in 4th but fell off with 10 laps to go and then with just 2 laps to go Rossi got past Viñales but ran wide on a right hander on the final lap allowing Viñales back into the lead. Rossi fought back but crashed out in his attempt to retake the lead handing second place to Zarco and third to Dani Pedrosa’s Repsol Honda. Viñales now leads the championship ahead of Pedrosa and Rossi.

At the Spanish GP in Barcelona Hamilton, Vettel, Bottas and Raikkonen filled the first four places on the grid but surprise result was Alonso who put his McLaren Honda in 7th position in front of his home supporters but that was as good as it got and he went backwards in the race. Vettel led the early laps from Hamilton while Raikkonen and Verstappen took each other out on the first lap. A safety car then intervened and Hamilton took the lead and drove a brilliant race to the finish on tyres which really shouldn’t have been able to last that long. Vettel was Sincere Condolences second ahead of Ricciardo and still leads Former MotoGP World Champion Nicky the championship standings by 6 points. Hayden has died following a cycling accident in Italy. Hayden, who was champion in 2006 for Honda, was universally liked and respected by everyone involved in motorsport as seen from the messages of condolence which have appeared on social media. WRC Star of the show in Argentina was Elfyn Evans from Wales. He led from the start in his D Mack Ford Fiesta and after three days rallying over the toughest terrain imaginable entered the final stage with a 0.6 second lead over the Hyundai of Thierry Neuville. Everything was crossed for the likable Welshman but one tiny mistake when he got sideways on a bridge was all it took and he missed out on his first WRC win by 0.7 sec. Neuville took his second win in a row and is now second in the championship to the ever consistent Ogier. Kris Meeke looks increasingly like an accident looking for somewhere to happen and he didn’t disappoint in Argentina. He rolled the car on Day 1 and while the Citroen mechanics rebuilt it in double quick time he then rolled again on the final day and this time the poor car was beyond repair. In Portugal the rally lead was held by seven different drivers until Sebastien Ogier, (who else?), ran out the winner in a Fiesta which he is at last beginning to like. Much work by M Sport has the car handling properly and this was emphasised by team mate Ott Tanak who led for much of the event. Once again Meeke damaged the suspension of the Citroen while in the lead and Latvala also led until he rolled the Toyota. Neuville and Sordo finished second and third in their Hyundais ahead of Tanak and Craig Breen who seems to have made a habit of finishing fifth. Ogier leads the championship while M Sport Ford have a healthy lead in the manufacturers standings. Late News in: Citroen World Rally Team have announced that Andreas Mikkelsen will join their team for Rally Sardegna (Rally Italy) next month replacing Stephane Lefebvre in the line up. Although this is a one off drive it is believed that a long term deal has been agreed. Mikkelsen, a rally winner for VW last year, has been driving a Skoda Fabia WRC2 car this year and his arrival at Citroen will surely keep Meeke and Breen on their toes in Italy and beyond.

Formula E In Monaco Sebastien Buemi withstood enormous pressure from Lucas di Grassi to take the win. Buemi went onto to give Renault e.dams its most important win of the year by producing a dominant display in front of its home crowd in the Qatar Airways Paris ePrix. Defending champion Buemi currently has a 43 point lead and has won 5 out of the 6 races so far.

Nicky Hayden The 35 year old 2006 MotoGP world champion Nicky Hayden tragically died last month, following a crash while training on his bicycle near the Misano circuit in Italy. Nicky was a true all-rounder, excelling not only in MotoGP but also in his early years as an AMA Pro flat Track racer and as a production bike rider both in the AMA Superbike series and more recently in World Superbikes for the Red Bull Honda team. More than a racer, though, he was also loved by the paddock and his fellow competitors. One of the few people that no one would ever have a bad word to say about, the American was rare in having taken a championship without ever made an enemy in MotoGP. Everyone at the CCT sends our deepest sympathies to his family and friends.

Safety for Cyclists in Spain Last month in Spain was a bad one for cyclists. An 18 year old woman ploughed in to a peleton (group) of cyclists killing three and critically injuring two more. Then the next day a 22 year old woman did the same, killing another cyclist leaving six critically injured. Both women were over the limit of alcohol and drugs and the incidents happened between 7.30 and 8.30 in the morning. 19 cyclists have been killed this year which is four more than the whole of last year. The new Director General of Traffic and the Interior Minister acted quickly by calling a committee meeting of the Segurided Viral DGT to come up a viable solution. Already a decision has been made that any driver having failed two or more tests for exceeding alcohol or drugs will have their driving licence taken away. Drivers remember that the alcohol limit is lower than in the UK and if you are on prescribed drugs then check what they say about driving because if you are tested then you could be at risk. The Director General of Traffic has instructed the Guardia Civil Trafico to increase the traffic checks for alcohol and drugs as well as speed control. There are 2 million cyclists on the road each day and there are 5173 accidents in Urban areas and over 2000 in InterUrban areas a day. 49% of accidents the cyclist were not wearing a helmet and 30% did not abide by the rules of the road. I am sure that these points will be addressed by the committee. Drivers remember that cyclists can ride two a breast but the local municiple may have their own law that in town they should ride singly in traffic. Cyclists have priority at unmarked cross roads and they can ride in a group. Also power assisted cycles (mopeds, electric bikes etc.) have the same rules. Drivers must leave 1.5m clearance between the vehicle and the cyclist. Thanks to David Hudson for this information.

ing. So, good first impression, but what´s it like to ride? It´d be rude not to find out when you´re offered the remote ignition key; wouldn´t it?!

Let us beat your Car or Bike quote! Call today!

I must admit the very first thought that went through my mind was "Blimey! It´s a bit Vibey!" Somewhat akin to a Harley, but when pulling off you got the feeling it might cut out and stall! Almost "chugging" in it´s power delivery. At least, that was what it was like the first few times. Then I started riding it properly, unlike a Harldly Movingson, the Duke doesn´t carry all it´s poke low down in the rev range. As you pass 3K revs, the pulses smooth out and a giant Italian hand shoves you in the back pushing you forward at a surprising rate of knots. Hmmmmm? So that´s where the power kicks in then? Errrrr? NO!! 5K Revs see a distinct step up in delivery and I start to chuckle to myself as the bars go light through 3rd and 4th gears....WOW!! Short shift up into 6th and try to calm down and remember the owner is just behind me! Ooops! LOL!! The (cruiser/hot rod/super naked?) Duke has a great cossetting riding position. It does seem a bit high after the VFR and compared to the Harley is like riding on the roof of a small lorry! It is most definitely well planted in it´s feel and feedback. And the soundtrack?? !!!!! That exhaust! The trouble is, it gets better the higher the Revs!! The thing is, unlike some bikes, where you stop for a coffee and sit looking at ‘em thinking "Wow, that´s fast!". With the Duke, you stop and sit looking at it thinking "Wow that´s fast and..OH! I hadn´t noticed THAT before...or THAT!!" See this machine is a Devil, and as is well documented, the Devil is in the detail! That´s what makes it such a mesmerising motorcycle, it´s beautiful not in a Harley way or drop dead sexy like the original 916....it´s just soooo....???? DETAILED! LOL!!

A group of riders meet on Thursdays at 9.30am (weather permitting) at Waldermars, La Florida. Call 671 826 201 or email mollyandbaileybassett@hotmail.com if you fancy joining them.

Ride 39: DUCATI DIAVEL CARBON Ducati. Not the first marque that springs to mind when you think of cruisers is it?! But then again, Harley have a whole "family" of motorcycles called "Sportsters" so....? LOL!! Ducati launched the Diavel (Italian for "Devil”) to a shocked world in 2011 and the Carbon followed in 2014. I remember the first time I met the owner of this "Test" bike. He was asking about the import process for motorcycles outside of Europe, I thought...why bother? Cos it sure as hell ain’t a simple matter of getting a new Reg plate! Then, a few months later, I saw it! This thing is STUNNING. seriously, it´s not jaw droppingly beautiful like say a an old Z1 or MVF4 oro....but the attention to detail and standard of finish? Every time I look at it I notice a new little artistic flourish or piece of exquisite engineer-

20

That´s it then? The quest is over? we have found the perfect bike? Errr...? Not quite. Almost, but no cigar...! For a start..I doubt pillions would enjoy the ride as much as I did. The rear brake? WHAT rear brake? I wouldn´t fancy having to do too many slow-riding maneuvers on it! And the thing will take as long to clean as full blown Chrome Covered American Carnaval Float!!! In fact, I´m not sure if it IS a good bike?! But, if the owner´s reading this, I´m more than willing to give it another try to change my mind!! LOL!!! Stay Safe, El Guiri

A Funny Thing Happened.... by Richard O’Rourke In a series of articles Richard O’Rourke recalls some amusing incidents which occurred during his time as roving photographer and reporter for Motoring News in the 1980s and ‘90s.

SERVICE STORIES While the bread and butter of a motorsport press photographer’s itinerary is at the trackside or at the side of a rally stage, very often the more interesting shots and stories can be had in the pits and service areas. In the ‘80s a press photographer had almost unlimited access to the inner sanctum of pit and paddock and so long as you kept out of the way you were welcome to stay and snap to your heart’s content. Formula 1 was, and still is, quite restrictive and the drivers were difficult to get near but a rally service area was a goldmine of candid photos, quotes and stories. If a car needed some serious work done it was a busy and frenetic place to be but if only routine maintenance was needed the atmosphere was much more relaxed and we were often treated to a warming cup of coffee or soup and sarnies while we chatted to the drivers and navigators. It was interesting to see the teams at work and how their approach to the job in hand varied. Teams such as Ford, GM and Peugeot just got on with it without much drama but the arrival on the scene of Audi saw a much more methodical approach and this contrasted greatly to the apparent mayhem in the Lancia camp. At Audi each mechanic had a specific job right down to the guy who cleaned the windscreen and lights and, if he had time, the rally numbers and sponsors logos as well. This was all well and good but if time was running out and there was still work to be done they would lose the plot a little and the cracks in the German efficiency were plain to be seen. Next door at Lancia it was typical Italian. All hands to the wheel and despite the chaos the job still got done….well, most of the time anyway.

On one such occasion at the RAC Rally, Audi had very little to do except a wheel swap and general check up so attention was focused on the Lancia 037 of Markku Alen which needed a gearbox change and with very little time to do the job the mechanics attacked the car amid much Italian shouting and spanner juggling. Co-driver, Ilkka Kivimaki stood at the side, stopwatch in hand, and told the spannermen how much time they had remaining and lo and behold with seconds to spare the job was just about complete with Alen sitting in the car, engine running and flicking through the gears. But then the fun started!. The 037 was a mid-engined car and for ease of maintenance the whole of the back end, from the doors back, lifted into the air and was kept up by a pole which was, essentially, a brush handle. In their rush to get the job finished someone pulled down on the engine cover without first removing the pole and it pierced the fibreglass and stuck in the air like a mast. The driver, thinking the job was finished, reversed out of the garage while the mechanics frantically tried to lift the cover and remove the brush handle. The noise level had by now reached fever pitch and I will never forget the scene as, with the car now driving forward towards the service exit, the mechanics managed to remove the offending item to a huge round of applause and cheering from the onlookers including the bewildered Audi crew.

Another feature of service areas at the RAC was the distribution of the famous Rally Bulletins by Brian and Liz Patterson. Brian would gather information regarding stage times, retirements, incidents, accidents and anything else of interest. This information would then be dictated to Liz and she would type an A4 sheet which would then be fed into a Gestetner machine and hundreds of copies would emerge and be passed out to the rally crews and passing spectators. It was a wonderful way of keeping up with what was happening on the rally and a service which became an essential part of the rally scene in the British Isles and beyond. Journalists from all the rally press gang would also provide the Pattersons with information and the payback was a full set of bulletins (up to 20 at a big event) at the end of the rally to help put the whole story together in a cohesive manner. I was one such scribe and I would often help to distribute the bulletins as well. On one occasion in Llandrindod Wells, on a cold and wet November night, boredom set in and as I stood at the exit from the service park I started to shout “Rally bulletins, get your Cork Examiner rally bulletins” Liz, standing on the other side of the road responded and shouted “Rally bulletins, get your Belfast Telegraph rally bulletins”. The good people of Wales and beyond were confused to say the least but we were having a laugh and that’s what it’s all about in the end. Then it was back to the serious work of trudging through the forests in search of the photographs which would grace the pages of Motoring News on the following Friday.
