The first autonomous vehicle designed to run on UK public roads was officially unveiled at a government launch event in Greenwich last month. Road tests are set to begin this spring with the LUTZ, (Low-carbon Urban Transport Zone) Pathfinder. Trials of autonomous vehicles have been approved in Bristol, Coventry, Milton Keynes and Greenwich and will start this spring. Let’s see what the manufacturers are doing in this area... Nissan have tied up with NASA to test autonomous driving technologies that could find their way into future vehicles both on the road and in space exploration missions. Ford unveiled their Fusion Hybrid research vehicle back in 2013, which can drive around all on its own by detecting the world around it.
The Audi Adapted A7 has the bosses at Audi exited, they say the sensors and equipment demonstrated in the vehicle are ‘production ready’. As a result, the company claims it is on course to put driverless cars into commercial production as soon as next year.
Mercedes unveiled its self-driving Mercedes-Benz F 015 concept in January, which can be operated autonomously or manually and features four motorized lounge chairs that can be rotated to allow face-to-face conversations.

GTA Spano. Spanish car company Spania GTA are launching a supercar world first by using new graphene technology and the most advanced manufacturing techniques. Graphene is a new 2D carbon material which gained researchers at the University of Manchester a Nobel Prize for Physics in 2010. It is ultra-light, yet immensely strong, 200 times stronger than steel yet incredibly flexible, fire resistant but retains heat. A collaboration between Valenciabased Spania GTA and Graphenano, the biggest Spanish company in graphene production, GTA Spano becomes the first super sportscar in the world to incorporate this technology into several components for the new version of its GTA Spano, which will stay exclusive with a production run of just 99 cars. Its chassis and bodywork have been created using graphene with carbon fibre, titanium and Kevlar to give the brand a unique status. This latest GTA Spano has a new 8.0 litre V10 twin turbo engine boasting 925hp and 1,220 Nm torque to accelerate from 0 to
100 km/h in 2.9 seconds with a top speed of over 370 km/h. It is being revealed at Geneva this month.
Ferrari F1 Car. It just wouldn´t be the Costa Car Trader without a far out Ferrari inside and we have a corker for you this month. Designed by the Ferrari studio in Maranello, this one really has come from the manufacturer and it fits in with the current technical rules. The brief was to "come up with an F1 car that is technologically advanced, and captivating to the eye. Our challenge was to create something that was - to put it short - better looking," says Jaguar Ferrari. "We value your comments on that." Let’s F-Pace hope they make it and we get to see it racing. A Pagani Zonda? No it's not, it´s actually a Ford Granada that a man from the UK has turned into his very own Zonda. Nick Truman bought the car for £100 and has spent the last five years working on it. It all started when bought an old Jaguar engine for £89 with the idea of making it into an elaborate coffee table. He realised it was too big, so, as anyone would, he decided to create a replica of the 200mph Pagani Zonda supercar. Once he had the Granada, he sourced wheels, tyres, gearboxes, windscreens and all other parts on eBay. Nick has spent around £15,000 on the project and said 'It was a fun project to do with my children although my wife wasn't overly impressed" The car A genuine Zonda is remarkable considering he has never seen a Zonda in real life. He used only a die-cast model and pictures from the internet. New Evora 400. The new 396bhp Evora is intended to put the financially struggling Norfolk sports car maker back on track. The 3.5-litre V6 engine has a new supercharger which ups the power by 54bhp from the current supercharged Evora S, giving a 0-60mph of 4.1sec. The top speed is 186mph, which equates to 300kmh, the first Lotus to achieve this. Due out in August. Rolls-Royce Confirms It's Making An SUV. In an open letter published on 18 February, Rolls-Royce chairman Peter Schwarzenbauer and chief executive Torsten Müller-Ötvös confirmed the development of 'an all-new Rolls-Royce with exceptional presence, elegance and purpose.' In the works is 'a high-bodied car with an all-new aluminium architecture... that can cross any terrain.’ Codenamed Cullinan, the new off-roader marks the arrival of the third RR model line and it's due to come out in 2018.

This stunning VW Campervan has it's home here on the Costa Blanca with owner Darren Love.
Darren bought the 1964 Split Screen in February 2014, making the trip to Barcelona to collect it, having purchased it over the phone. He handed it over to Garaje Alonso who did a full restoration on the van. It was an involved job with large sections of old metal cut out and replaced, before being sprayed with an anti-rust coating. Finally the paint was applied, changing it's original two tone burgundy and white colour to a two tone white and blue. Although the blue looks like an original colour (similar to the Bay Campervan seen in Back to the Future), it's actually Botticelli Blue as used on 2014 Citroen C1s. Darren refurbished the engine (prior to painting) and interior himself, keeping the inside simple but sylish with a unique V on the wall to mimic the front of the bus. There's a double bed inside and storage under the seat. Matching curtains and carpet finished the look.
The van was originally bought by the Spanish Air Force in 1964 in Palencia, northwest Spain. In 1975 it was acquired by an employee's wife and was registered for use on the road. She drove the bus for over 35 years before selling it in 2013 to a man from Barcelona who drove the 8 hour journey home in it. Darren saw it for sale the following year and bought it to go with his Type 2, which is next in line for a complete restoration.

Season News Pre-Season Testing News. Jerez: The first test showed that Mercedes are still the team to beat and Ferrari look like they have a good car. Red Bull didn't do anything special, but are they hiding something? McLaren weren't looking too good either.

Barcelona: Again Mercedes stood out along with Ferrari whose new engine updates proved to be successsful. Red Bull improved, with Daniel Ricciardo topping the tables on day 2. The testing was over-shadowed by an accident involving Fernando Alonso in the McLaren. Rumours are flying: Was he electrocuted by KERS? Did leaking battery fumes make him drowsy or unconscious before he hit the wall? Had the newly Honda-powered MP4-30 spectacularly failed? McLaren say it was due to the wind. The Spaniard has already spent two nights in hospital recovering from Fernando Alonso concussion and the effects of sedation given to him. It’s unlikely he’ll attend the final test in Barcelona which takes place after we go to print.

Mario Gabriele Andretti was born in Montona, Italy in 1940. He is one of the most successful Americans in the history of the sport, one of only two drivers to win races in Formula One. He moved to the USA (when he was 15) with his family and already had a love of motorsport having watched the Italian Grand Prix in Monza the year before. Four years later, Mario and his twin brother were racing in a car they had built themselves. Mario proved to have a flair as he won 20 races in the sportsman stock car class in his first two seasons. He won his first Indy Car race in 1965 and finished third in the Indianapolis 500, earning him Rookie of the Year. He went on to win his first Indy Car Championship that year becoming the youngest driver (aged 25) to win the title. He ended the decade with a total of 30 victories and 29 poles out of 111 Indy Car starts. He started the 70s off with his second victory in the 12 Hours of Sebring, followed by his first Formula One triumph in South Africa, driving for Ferrari. 1972 saw him win many of the endurance race meetings: 6 Hours of Daytona, 12 Hours of Sebring, BAOC 1000 km at Brands Hatch and Watkins Glen 6 Hours. He returned to F1 in 1976, racing for Colin Chapman at Team Lotus. He won the year's final Grand Prix in Japan, going on to win four race in the 1977 season, including his native Italy (Monza) and again in the United States (Long Beach). Mario dominated the 1978 season with nine poles and six wins to take the Championship in the revolutionary "ground effects" Lotus, which he had worked so hard to develop, and joined Phil Hill (1961) as the only American to be World Champion. He was the first driver in motor racing history to win the Formula One and Indy Car titles. He continued competing through the 80s and in the 90's set history once again when him, his two sons and nephew competed in the Indianapolis 500. Today Mario is a spokesman, associate and friend to top executives around the world.

The Motorsport Month by Richard O'Rourke Sweden 5-8th February 2015 Just 4.6 seconds separated the top three drivers as they entered the final 15.8km stage of Rally Sweden with Andreas Mikkelson leading the way in his 2014 spec VW Polo R and hoping for his first WRC win. Hot on his heels were World Champion Sebastien Ogier in the new Polo and Belgian, Thierry Neuville in the Hyundai i20. Most of the top crews had encountered problems of one sort or another over the previous three days, the low snow banks and changing road surface catching out Ogier, Latvala and Meeke among others. One driver who avoided costly delays was Haydon Paddon who was standing in for the injured Danny Sordo in the second Hyundai and he would eventually finish fifth. Robert Kubica drove very well and kept it on the road but lost a lot of time when his Ford Fiesta lost 4WD and he had to struggle on with front drive only. Mads Ostburg in the Citroen DS2 was another to have a clean run and he was delighted to finish fourth. Mikkelson took a surprise lead on the short Thursday night section and maintained that advantage for most of the remainder of the rally, only the flying Nueville demoting him to second for a short period on the Saturday. It was here that the Belgian set a new record for longest jump over Colin’s Crest with an incredible leap of 44 metres (145ft in old money). He admitted to having a bit of trouble slowing down for the next bend but managed to scrabble round and compose himself for the remainder of the stage. Welshman Elfyn Evans was also having a good run and avoiding trouble on the unfamiliar snow covered roads which were showing signs of melting in some places causing the tyres to lose their studs and subsequent grip levels.
Sebastien Ogier Some drivers resorted to carrying two spares which they changed before the start of the following stage, the extra weight and road penalties being more than made up for by the increased grip and improved chances of not having a costly “off”. And so to that final stage shoot out. Neuville was first to go and set a steady if unspectacular time. Ogier was next and he was fast, very fast, and made no mistakes to take, what in golfing parlance, was the clubhouse lead. And so it was down to Mikkelson who held a 3 second advantage with all to gain and everything to lose. Unfortunately he tried just a little too hard and he went wide on a left hander and rode up the snowbank where the car teetered for fifty metres or more before getting stuck and the result was an 18 second loss which demoted him to third overall. Ogier took the win, and the extra 3 points for winning the Power stage, and extended his championship lead going into the next round on the gravel roads of Mexico next month. Rare Motorbike Up For Auction This 1915 Cyclone was among Hollywood star Steve McQueen's extensive collection of classic motorbikes. The Cyclone is one of the the most desirable motorbikes in the world due to its exclusivity, it was made for only three years between 1913 and 1916 and only six are known to exist today. They were built for board track racing, a popular motorsport where riders would compete around a huge banksided oval circuit. The bikes, made without brakes, could hit record speeds of more than 110mph courtesy of a 996cc 45hp engine. Cyclones were sold for just $350, the equivalent to about $7,000 today. The Cyclone bike is tipped to fetch an amazing $750,000 when it goes under the hammer at Mecum Auctions in Las Vegas later this month. That price would make it one of the most expensive motorbikes ever sold at auction.

The Spanish TimeAttack Series
The TimeAttack Series is an exciting, action-packed competition with participants racing against the clock rather than each other with the goal to set the fastest lap. All types of cars can take part from street cars to race-tuned sports cars.
Luke Mustoo is a young man from England who has lived in Spain most of his life. We followed him in 2011 as he started out on his dream to become a professional racing driver. Luke took part in the Spanish Time Attack Series, achieving 3rd place overall. He took a race win in the 2012 Series before sadly pulling out due to car problems. He moved onto the MINI Challenge in 2013, but suffered a series of setbacks. In true British spirit, he has come back to compete in the 2015 Time Attack Series. He has a new, more powerful Clio and Luke has been busy preparing the car ready for the first race later this month. 20
