September is a lovely month over here, the temperatures cool down to become very pleasant, the kids go back to school and we hope no one mentions THAT word yet. You know the one I mean - begins in C and ends in mas... Anyway, this summer saw a couple of Motorshows hit the area, we went along and have compiled some of the photos for you in case you missed it. El Guiri took a longer break this month and we give him more space to tell us all about it. Gibraltar was the destination and we were interested to read what he was really looking at at the Harley Show! The three-day festival had its first ever 100,000 strong crowd and even the rain didn't spoil the show. With lots of actionpacked races, a stunning air display and rockers Status Quo entertaining the crowds on Saturday night. Sunday saw a silver car parade to celebrate the event’s 25th anniversary.
BTCC Honda Racing Team teammates Gordon Shedden and Matt Neal took victory in the Warwick Banks Trophy at the wheel of the Team Dynamics owned Ford Lotus Cortina, starting from 14th in the race for Under 2 Litre Touring Cars, after their car struggled in a Mini-dominated wet qualifying session. By the end of the first lap Neal had managed to move in to the top five, before the safety car brought everyone down to a controlled speed. Once the safety car period was over and the pitstop cycle began to wind down, Shedden battled until the end, finishing ahead of the two BMW 1800 pairings of Richard Shaw & Jackie Oliver and Mark Sumpter & former BTCC race winner Mike Jordan.

One of the special Silver Jubilee initiatives introduced this year was new awards honouring the two driving forces behind the circuit’s first-ever historic motor sport festival; the Mervyn Garton ‘Scarf and Goggles’ Award acclaimed the best off-track visitor attraction while the Stuart Graham ‘Scarf and Goggles’ Award was presented to what was judged to be the most admirable car competing at the Classic. Also new for 2015 was a Legends of Modern Formula One’ demonstration, bringing together iconic cars raced by the likes of Michael Schumacher and Nelson Piquet.

Auction Fever. Monterey, California was the place to be in August where two sales made history with record breaking cars. RM Sotheby’s sold a 1953 Jaguar C-Type Works Lightweight setting a record for the marque selling for $13,200,000. (€11,709,382) after a bidding war. The car was the second of only three C-Type works cars produced and took fourth place at Le Mans in 1953, before being raced by the Ecurie Ecosse team. The Pinnacle Collection sale featured 25 key models of the past 50 years, including a Ferrari 250 LM which sold for €15 million, the most expensive car at the specialist auction. A rare McLaren F1 became the most expensive British car ever sold, fetching $13,750,000 (€12,205,689). The 1998 McLaren is capable of more than 240mph, this was the 62nd car of the 63 road-going F1 cars made by McLaren and one of only two upgraded by the factory to Le Mans specification.
Engine Noise by.. Roland Synthesizer. This ZZ electric sports car will come with an engine noise thanks to a deal between a Japanese carmaker GLM and musical equipment manufacturer Roland. They have developed a unique in-car synthesizer to give ZZ owners something to listen to besides music. The company promises “ingenious neo-futuristic sounds that will give sports car enthusiasts the experience of driving a space ship on the road.” The product uses Roland’s SuperNATURAL synthesizer technology to produce studio-quality sounds based on vehicle acceleration, deceleration, and motor load variances. Buyers will be able to choose between a variety of different tones when the car goes on sale later this year. The ZZ has 300bhp and with its lightweight construction, it will do 0 to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds.
Chris Evan's Car Auction. Broadcaster and new Top Gear host Chris Evans has put 13 cars from his collection, including 6 Ferraris up for auction. His replica Chitty Chitty Bang Bang 1936 car is on the list and is expected to go for around £350,000 at the sale. Also up for grabs is a rare 1966 Ferrari 275, estimated to fetch between £2.6m and £2.9m. Chris will also put 140 lots of auto-memorabilia up for sale, with proceeds from the memorabilia part of the auction going to the BBC's Children in Need charity. The date of the sale is 12 September at Goodwood, West Sussex. Ultimate Scalextric Circuit. Martin Brundle has created his ultimate Scalextric circuit based on corners from the 2015 F1 calendar. Some of the iconic curves to make the cut include the Ascari Chicane at Monza, Italy; Casino Square in Monaco; the wall of champions at Montreal, Canada; Copse Corner at Silverstone and The Marina Complex in Yas Marina, Abu Dhabi. Up for auction at CarFest South Festival on the Bank Holiday weekend. All proceeds will go to Children In Need.

SATURDAY ON THE ROCK: Contact was eventually re-established and with the aid of directions from Colin we all regrouped in the square overlooking the world famous gorge.
Goes To Gibraltar Ride 24: Ronda and the Rock THE ROAD TO RONDA Wednesday afternoon our group met at the gas station and made our way to the Meson de Arboleas. The run there was without incident, apart from Hayley dropping Rob's BRAND NEW HELMET on the floor, eerily close to where Jack bounced his helmet off the floor on the way to the High Sierras Run! But Rob was fine about it and didn't even mention again. NOT!! Lol! That evening, we had a pleasant dinner and presentation of Full Patch membership for Austin. Welcome to the club Austin. Thursday morning saw us all up, breakfasted and ready when Colin (Road Captain for the trip) arrived to collect us. A few miles down the autovia we meet the rest of Arboleas MCC and the journey proper began. The first part of the Ride was on the autovia and passed uneventfully until near Motril, when heavy traffic and 'National' roads meant some 'questionable' filtering was needed at times. At San Pedro de Alcantara we left the autovia behind to start the climb into the mountains on the A397 to Ronda. For me personally, this was the highlight of the trip, it certainly provided the best riding of the voyage. The road climbs relentlessly into the interior, curve after curve. The decent road surface and width mean the bends can be enjoyed without too much fear of flying off the edge whilst still affording opportunities to take in the panoramic views. This part of Spain was still very green (despite this year's heatwave/drought) and coupled with the low, mist-like clouds; gave the impression that we were riding through Tea plantations in Ceylon! Once in Ronda itself, the second rider, who shall remain nameless (Clive!! Lol!) decided he knew a better way and stopped following the Road Captain?! The rest of their group did likewise meaning our club had no choice but to follow the new 'leader'! The new 'leader' then led us in ever increasingly hot circles until he found somewhere we couldn't park the bikes! Lol!! The Carry On Biking was reinforced by Hayley's comment of "Look at those beautiful knockers!" (seriously! She said those actual words! Lol!).

After a spot of sightseeing, and when Tony had finished signing autographs for his newly found Japanese fans (still not sure who they thought he was?! Lol!), we mounted up again and set off down the mountain on the last leg of our journey that would see us arrive at the overnight stop in Los Angeles near Jimena de la Frontera. Going down the other side of Ronda the A369 sends you through stunning scenery reminiscent of the Lord of the Rings movies. Sadly the road surface for the final 20-odd kilometres of the A405 put a bit of a shadow over it, since it's difficult to relax when you're repeatedly thrown 3 feet out of your seat! Lol!! It was on this stretch that Rob and Hayley say they caught sight of a Griffin Vulture. The Hotel was something else. A dire, bland looking, cinderblock 'box' from outside; the reception led onto a Patio Anduluz (interior courtyard to you and me!) which had our rooms leading off it on 3 sides. I say 'rooms', they were actually suites complete with bathroom, kitchen, lounge, bedroom and entrance hall?! And every room had the USUAL AND NECESSARY AIR CONDITIONING! A most pleasant evening was had by all, in spite the Hotel owner's best efforts to fleece us out of our last centimos?! Not every Harley rider is a retired Oil Company magnate!! It's a shame because despite it being an absolutely fantastic place; Senor Greedio's antics mean he will not be seeing any of us again. Night fell, so after we'd picked it up and walked it home, everyone retired to our spacious, air-conditioned accommodation. Tomorrow would have the group arriving at Gibraltar itself where, we had been led to believe, rooms of a luxurious nature not seen since the out-fitting of the White Star Line's TITANIC awaited us. Unfortunately we had all forgotten how THAT enterprise had ended!

Our small group had agreed to go back into town the next morning via taxi for breakfast and a possible tour in one of the numerous mini-buses. When we came downstairs at 9am Tony told us Henryk had decided to go into town with Austin and Mark on the bikes instead. So, down to 5 now, we took a taxi back down the rock as planned. Ahhhh..."the best laid plans.." and all that! The taxi driver told us that a Cruise Liner was about to dock and disembark it's passengers. But we took a vote and decided that we still had to eat first! Oh yes... Enter stage right, the one, the only, FULL ENGLISH!! Da Daaaa!!! Mmmmmmm...lovely staff, good service: Top food! We still couldn't convince Jero to eat any baked beans though! Afterwards, a stroll down to Casemates Square found two of our MIAs (Austin and Mark) enjoying the entertainment of the annual Harley rally (Henryk having left them after breakfast). We perused the scantily clad ladies whilst pretending to look at the bikes for a while before heading back into town.

At the petrol station, the girls said they wanted to eat SOON, and it was getting a bit 'late' by now after Rob had decided to ride like a 'native' (going down at least 2 oneway streets the wrong way!!? lol!) and got us lost at one point! Lol!! Meal duly taken care of, we made our way back to the Retreat for the final time. There we enjoyed a last night 'round the camp fire' style (only round the air conditioning!) chatting etc. Sunday was a hot, long ride back via the autovias. Truly an experience. Would I do it again? Not for a while at least and not in August! A final thanks to Colin, whose invitation led to this adventure. Austin, for sterling work as tailgunner. All the cast and crew, for your company, laughs and tears!
Despite our best efforts however,we were unable to get a mini-bus tour due to all the cruise passengers. Luckily the museum was open though and we passed an enjoyable/informative hour there. Even drinking copious amounts of water and soft drinks, we were soon tired and in need of a rest. The girls flagged down a passing taxi and we gallantly pushed them aside to get into the air-conditioned interior! LOL! A quick discussion led to PLAN B, return to the digs, chill out in the lounge, wait until 6:30 when the park entry was free (ÂŁ22 for bike and 2 people!), then go for a ride through the National Park, refuel ready for tomorrow and possibly get something to eat too. While taking photos outside the Retreat, Rob met Henryk walking back from the bus stop. Rob explained the plan for later etc, but unfortunately Henryk said he was unable to come with us as he'd been drinking (alcohol that is! we'd ALL been drinking, or we'd have been dried-up husks by then! Lol!). At 6:30 we were off: Apes, bunkers, views, lighthouses and tunnels (lovely COOL tunnels, ahhh...)

This is the conclusion of my story on the history of my car ownership through the years.. I got into short circuit racing between around 1975 and 1980 and so I built a stock car in my garage, much to the annoyance of the neighbours. Another piece of Arthur Daly like negotiation followed and the stock car was swopped for a Mini Hot Rod. I also did untold damage to what would be our classics of today as ,yes, dear readers, I confess I did banger racing. It was at this time that I had two rather bad accidents on the track. In the second of these my car was hit by several other racers and split in two. They got me out but I got one hell of a fright and I never raced again.
Real family stuff followed with a 1973 Volvo 145 and later a 245 GLE, both very good cars and very suitable for towing caravans. In amongst the Volvos I did manage to sneak in a Sierra Cosworth just to prove I was not dead. Since then the cars I have owned have been of the A to B variety and hardly worth a mention but the grand total of cars, good, bad and ugly, comes to over thirty. Among these have been a Transit van, Suzuki Baleno, a troublesome Renault 19 which would not pass the MOT on emissions at 50,000 ml, Honda Accord x 2 , a Peugeot estate, Opel Corsa, Opel Zafira 2.0 diesel (fabulous car now done 250.000 km).
However someone was still out to get me. I was a passenger in my old schoolmate’s Austin A35 when the back tyre punctured on a bend and the car rolled. We landed on the drivers side, spinning uncontrollably in front of an artic lorry who thankfully stopped when he saw this car sliding towards him. I’m glad to say that we only suffered minor injuries and concussion. Hey Ho ! Anyway where was I? Oh yes a house! A normal life took over and a Ford Cortina Mk 1, a wife, 2 children and a mortgage concentrated my mind. All this racing and fast car stuff was history until I spied Mk 2 Lotus Cortina for sale in a local dealers. The piggy bank was raided and I became the proud owner of an English White model with standard green stripe! What a car, a bugger to keep in tune though with it’s twin Weber carbs and the insurance was a bit steep so it had to go.

I have also owned a few classic cars in my day, some in the UK and some here in Spain. I had a coffee and cream Rolls Royce Vanden Plas with cream leather upholstery, what a beauty and worth a lot of money today, a Mercedes 380 SEL which I brought to Spain and later sold to an enthusiast in Ireland. This was followed by a BMW Z3 which was rubbish because you had to change gear with a stick thing that came out of the floor and my present car, a red Mercedes SL300 which is a pleasure to drive and most suited to the Spanish climate. I am in the throws of having this car re-registered in Spain but that is another story altogether. Nathan Hall

Last month saw the return of the A Todo Gas Motorshow to San Miguel de Salinas. Although the photos aren’t too clear; it was dark, smoky and the action was quick - we thought we would share them with you. It was a fun evening of stunts and tricks and everyone enjoyed themselves.

2015 Formula 1 This time of year is not known as the silly season for nothing with rumours flying around the paddock as to who is going where and this year was no exception until Ferrari made the announcement that Kimi Raikkonen was staying put for 2016. This had a knock on effect, not least with Williams and Force India, as their drivers, Bottas and Hulkenberg, were strongly rumoured to be on the way to Maranello. Bottas now looks set fair to stay with Williams and Hulkenberg also seems to be in Limbo as, quite frankly, there are no better seats available. The situation at Lotus is up in the air with talks of bailiffs moving in to seize their assets due to unpaid bills and the strong rumour there is that Renault may well buy the team and go it alone as a manufacturer entry much like Mercedes and Ferrari. Their difficult association with Red Bull may well be the catalyst and, of course, this would be nothing new for the French team having won team and drivers championships in the past as a stand alone outfit. Red Bull would then be without an engine and again the rumour mill has them jumping into bed with Mercedes power. Watch this space! Back on the track we were treated to unusually warm and dry weather in Spa at the Belgian GP and the teams (and Pirelli) were caught out with tyres which were marginal for the conditions. Rosberg had a frightening blow out on Friday but Pirelli were quick to point out that the fault was not theirs. Teams were then left to re-assess pressures and camber angles to avoid a repeat and there was no further drama in that regard. Hamilton got a great start and drove to a comfortable victory while Rosberg had to fight for his second place after a poor start. Vettel was holding third on tired tyres ahead of a fast closing Grosjean until two laps from the finish when the right rear let go on the Kemmel straight at 190 mph allowing the Lotus to take a well deserved podium in the midst of all their woes. More tyre related drama befell Bottas whose team managed to send him away from a pit stop with three softs and one medium despite the tyres being clearly marked with coloured stripes. Wouldn’t happen down at Bloggs Tyre Emporium! Star of the show was Verstappen who drove a storming race to finish eight. Now there’s the boy for Ferrari in 2017! Max Verstappen MotoGP Two races in the USA (Indianapolis) and the Czech Republic (Brno) had the same top three finishers but in differing order. In the USA Marquez on the Honda was dominant as expected, with Lorenzo and Rossi following on the Yamahas ahead of Pedrosa on the other Honda. For some weird reason the Indy track is run anti-clockwise for the bikes and does not seem to flow properly and rarely produces a good race. Brno, on the other hand, is a classic track which always produces the goods but not this year. Lorenzo passed Marquez early in the race and opened a gap while Rossi fought his way through to third ahead of Iannone and Pedrosa. All of this leaves the championship tied at the top with Lorenzo and Rossi on 211 points and Marquez a distant (but catchable) third on 159. Next stop Silverstone as you are reading this!

WRC Rally Finland, formerly known as the Rally of the 1000 Lakes and commonly known as the Finnish Grand Prix such are the high speeds, provided it’s usual share of thrills and spills and made great TV entertainment. The cars spend a huge proportion of their time on full throttle and much of this airborne over the massive jumps. Only five nonSkandinavians have ever won the event and, true to form, this years rally was won by Jari-Matti Latvala in his VW Polo ahead of team mate Sebastian Ogier with Norwegian, Mads Ostberg, third for Citroen. Just across the border from Belgium where the F1 boys were going round in circles, the German round of the WRC was taking place in the Mosel Valley among the vineyards and punishing tank testing roads of the military ranges. VW had never won their home event but they made amends in the best possible way with an emphatic 1-2-3 result for runaway championship leader Ogier, followed by Latvala and Mikkelsen. The others were nowhere to be seen although Hyundai were well pleased with fourth and fifth. Just a thought. If you have a new born son and you want him to have a career in motorsport please consider calling him Sebastian. Loeb (7 WRC wins), Vettel (4 F1 titles) and Ogier (on the way to 3 WRCs) all share the same first name!

We catch up with Luke Mustoo now he is past mid-season in the Spanish TimeAttack Championship. Luke is mid-table in the standings after having finished 7th in the first meeting at Calafat, 4th in the second meeting at Albacete and not being able to participate in the third meeting at Castelloli due to a clutch failure the car suffered at the Albacete meeting.The team was aware that it wasn't going to be easy after all the work that had been carried out on the Clio 197 which left no time for testing prior to the first meeting. There are just 2 meetings to go: 12th Sept in Monteblanco, Huelva and 8th Nov in Guadix, Granada.The team are now preparing the car for the next meeting; fitting a ceramic clutch, lightweight flywheel and Girodisc larger 330mm front brake discs provided by their sponsor RSRacing. Jaguar Enthusiasts’ Club, Spain Lunch at Las Palmeras We made a return visit to Las Palmeras, hotel and restaurant in Crevillente and we were not disappointed. Las Palmeras is a little lacking as far as “kerb appeal” is concerned but the restaurant, function rooms and the terrace and pool areas are stunning. On top of that, there are plenty of parking spaces for our beloved Jaguars. On arrival, most people congregated around the pool terrace, a few G&T’s, a beer or two, coke of course for us drivers, or just a tonic, slice of lemon! Great to meet our old friends again. We sat down for lunch just before 2:00pm in a private function room overlooking the pool, very nice. I have to compliment the staff at Las Palmeras, the food and service was absolutely spot on. May I take this opportunity to thank all the members that attended especially the new members and the members that bought guests, bringing the total to 54 people and 20 cars.
Those who drive an historic vehicle should know that if the vehicle cannot reach 60kms they cannot drive on dual carriageways or motorways. Also Trafico (DVLA) can prohibit historic vehicles travelling on certain dates and routes if the vehicle cannot maintain 80 kms. Any historical vehicles that do not have lighting or signalling systems required by law are not allowed to travel between sunset and sunrise. When you have to have the vehicle tested for an ITV (MOT) it must be done in the Province that the vehicle is registered in and not the most convenient or cheapest, since it will be illegal and you face a fine and a retest. In Spain any vehicle 25 years or older is classed as Historico (Classic) and imported vehicles can choose between normal registration and tested every year or historic registration which is three times more expensive but it will only be tested to the original specification and retested every three, four or five years depending on the rule in the province you are in. The Magic of the Dyno I often hear people talk about how many horses their car or motorcycle have. This number is often provided by the manufacturer, based on a dynomometer test. The main problem is that this figure is often rather misleading. 100 BHP on a 500ccm two-stroke vs 100 BHP in a 6000ccm V8 engine is no comparison. Why not if both engines provide the the same power? The answer lies in torque as the engine provider. A good little basic rule, it requires about 10ccm(+/-) cylinder volume to make 1 Nm. So our little twostroke engine will provide approximately 50 Nm @ 9500 Rpm and the V8, 600 Nm @ 2500 Rpm. Of course, we want as much torque as possible over as many Rpm as possible of max Rpm, also called "Power band". Our two stroke provides 80% of its maximum torque from 8600 to 9700 Rpm and max Rpm for the engine is 10.500 Rpm. Which gives us a power band of approximately 10-12%. Our V8 will, in comparison, have a power band of 90%. It does not take much maths to figure out which of the two engines is the most easier to drive. And now the physical part.. To move 1 kg, 1 m/sec requires 10 Nm. Suddenly, we have a big V8 body

builder vs a little boy. That's why we want a BIG and WIDE power band. Of course the gearing from engine to wheels will also affect the vehicle performance. How do we get the bodybuilder into the motor? This is where the dyno become relevant, because it can give us data and info about combustion in the engine. Combustion or fuel mix are the key words here. What we want is a combustion that matches the air / fuel entering the engine. But the importance of durability is also a stable combustion temprature. To measure the fuel mix, there are several methods. The two most commonly used are Lambda probe and 5 gas analysis. Both systems have advantages over the other. Therefore, there is often, a combination of both systems. There are two basic principles. Inertia and load control. This description is the same for both cars and MC dyno. Read Part 2 next week.
