Jaguar recently teased us with the new XFR-S and at the LA Motor Show they showed it in its full powder blue glory. It’s not your normal Jag, you get 542bhp through the rear wheels, bigger wings, more vents, a splash of carbon fibre and a lot of noise. Under the bonnet is a 5.0 ltr supercharged V8 which allows it to reach a top speed of 186mph. The Porsche Cayman MKII is based on the new Boxster. Mid mounted engines, the Cayman gets a 2.7ltr - 261bhp whilst the S spec gets a 3.4ltr311bhp
Bentley won a string of Le Mans victories in the 1920s, and since then it’s been trying to convince us that its luxury cars are actually sports cars. It raced and won at Le Mans in 2003, and now Bentley is back with the Continental GT3 concept. Bentley did not divulge any mechanical details, but the word is it’s likely to borrow the 6.0ltr, twin turbocharged W-12 from the Continental GT Speed from which it is based upon. It produces 616bhp and 590 lb-ft of torque in stock form. This beauty is the Mercedes SLS AMG "Black Series" If there’s one supercar that doesn’t need any help getting noticed, it's the Mercedes SLS AMG. And now with the Black Series you get swollen bodywork, 59bhp more power and 70kg less weight. Not for the faint hearted...

The Early Days of European Motor Sport by Jill Carter Since the internal combustion engine was invented and fitted within a car like structure man has strived to make it go faster than any other vehicle on the road and track, thus motor racing was born!
On July 23, 1894, the Parisian magazine Le Petit Journal organized what is considered to be the world's first motoring competition from Paris to Rouen. The race started from Porte Maillot and went through the Bois de Boulogne. Count Jules-Albert de Dion was first into Rouen after 6 hours and 48 minutes at an average speed of 19 km/h. He finished 3’30” ahead of Albert Lemaître (Peugeot), followed by Doriot (Peugeot) at 16’30”, René Panhard (Panhard) at 33’30’’ and Émile Levassor (Panhard) at 55’30”. The official winners were Peugeot and Panhard as cars were judged on their speed, handling and safety characteristics, as De Dion's steam car needed a stoker which was forbidden. A number of other races were undertaken of varying distances on the open-roads. In 1907 the Peking to Paris race covered 9,317 miles over some of the roughest terrain on Earth. Five cars took part in the race, which was won by the Italian Prince Scipione Borghese in a 7,433 cc (453.6 cu in) 35/45 hp model Itala.
The French were the world leaders in car manufacture and at the forefront of motor racing organisation. Marcel Renault, together with his brothers Louis and Fernand founded the car manufacturer Renault in late 1899. Like all car builders he wanted to show case his cars by racing. In 1903 he entered the Paris-Madrid race, starting in 60th position and was almost up with the leaders by his arrival time at the Poitiers control point. Sadly he crashed at Cohué Vérac due to impaired visibility from excessive dust clouds whist overtaking. He was critically injured, dying the next day without regaining consciousness. During the race eight people died, three spectators and five racers. An inquiry showed that bad organisation, a general lack of understanding of the dangers of motor sport and a poorly policed event contributed to the death toll. Some of these racers were capable of speeds exceeding the steam trains of the period, an unbelievable 140 kph plus! The race was called off at Bordeaux by order of the French Government. It would not be until 1927 with the Italian Mille Miglia, that open-road racing returned to Europe.

This sculpture was exhibited at the Goodwood 2010 Festival of Speed on the Media Centre lawn with the permission of the owner Mike Timms. It is a life-size depiction in Corten steel of the last moments of Marcel Renault, whose eponymous racer crashed just before reaching the Bordeaux checkpoint. As well as testifying to the courage of those who risked their lives with similarly heroic feats in the early years of the 20th century, Jules Parker’s sculpture expresses the human struggle to control the machines we create. The contrast between the hurtling car and the fragility of its occupants is plain to see: the car itself is simplified into its essential shapes, from the characteristic coalscuttle bonnet shovelling its way through the air to the curved discs of its spinning wheels. It looks unstoppably weighty in sculpture form as in reality, note the sculptor in the second photograph. I chose to write about this subject because the sculpture and the Paris-Madrid race demonstrated so well human determination to develop technology to the full and the inborn need to succeed.

LĂnea Directa reports: HOW TO COMPLETE AN ACCIDENT REPORT FORM
This document is essential for determining who is responsible for a traffic accident, which has a direct effect on the price that customers pay when renewing their insurance.
What is an accident report form? An accident report form is a document which outlines the circumstances which have occurred in a car accident. In addition to the personal details of the drivers and their vehicles, the document includes a jointly agreed description of the manoeuvres carried out by the drivers when the accident took place, which plays a key role in determining who is responsible for a traffic accident. How should it be completed? LĂnea Directa offers the following advice to complete the form: 1. Columns A and B (blue and yellow), are for the personal details of the drivers and their vehicles. 2. In section 12, (Circumstances) the numbered column on the left describes the manoeuvres of car A and the one on the right those of car B. If you are unsure which box to mark, leave it blank. Make a drawing of the accident in section 13 indicating the manoeuvre of each car. 3. If anybody has been injured or if you think they might have been injured, complete section 24. 4. If there is more than one car involved in the accident, also complete section 23, on the reverse side of the form, and include it in the sketch. 5. Sign the form and keep a copy.

Aston Martin Celebrates Its Centenary. The British luxury sports car maker turns 100 this year and will host a series of UK and international celebrations to highlight the success of the brand worldwide. Aston Martin have produced some of the most iconic cars of their time and have become synonymous with the James Bond brand. The latest film, Skyfall, features a DB5 harking back to the 1964 film Goldfinger which featured a DB5 complete with all the gadgets of the day. Aston Martins current model line-up includes the Vanquish, which has won numerous prestigious awards and a new DB9. Both cars have received global media acclaim.
Volvo is Developing a Crashproof Car. The ever safety conscious Volvo are claiming that within 8 years they can produce vehicles which drive themselves and are totally crashproof. The computerised vehicles will be fitted with many high-tech sensors and will 'refuse to be steered' into other objects. The sensors will detect potential collisions and take action. It is part of the race by leading car manufacturers including Volvo, Ford Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Vauxhall and even Google to build fully automomous ‘Robo-cars’ that can drive themselves. The biggest issue is not the technology, as you would probably expect, this has largely been developed. It's the public acceptance of it and issues of who would be liable if a crashproof car did actually crash: the driver or the manufacturer?

HRT HRT not returning to Formula One 11 teams are set to compete in F1 next season after struggling Spanish-based HRT were not included on the official entry document for 2013. The HRT team was founded by Spanish ex-Formula 1 driver Adrian Campos in 2010, but did not score a single point in these three years. HRT's technical director, Toni Cuquerella, tweeted: "Four years ago I suggested to a friend to make an F1 team. Today after three seasons he has written the last page of HRT." HRT has now been put up for sale. However, Formula 1 boss Bernie

Who Will Be The New Face of BBC F1? The BBC are busy searching for a new anchorman to replace Jake Humphrey. Current runners are Lee McKenzie, who has filled in for Jake in the past, radio presenter Mark Pougatch and Suzi Perry, ex-BBC MotoGP pit lane reporter and former Gadget Show presenter. TV presenter and Radio DJ Chris Evans had also been linked to the role, but he has now dropped out, with F1's calendar apparently proving to be 'too much of a conflict with his other commitments'.

F1 Driver Profile Nelson Piquet
Nelson Piquet was born Nelson Soutomaior in Brazil in 1952 and developed an interest in motor racing while at high school in the USA. He began racing karts when he returned to Brazil and used his mother's The start in Brasil maiden name, Piquet to disguise what he was doing. Not for long however, since he won the Brazilian National Championship in his second year of competition in 1971. Funding himself, he won the Brazilian SuperVee Championship in 1976, then went to Europe on the advice of Emerson Fittipaldi. Piquet took the record number of wins in Formula Three in 1978, defeating Jackie Stewart's all-time record. In 1979, he joined the Brabham F1 team and finished the runner-up in 1980 before winning his first championship in 1981. He repeated the feat in 1983. After a poor couple of years, he moved to the Williams team in 1986 and was a title contender until the final round in Australia. Piquet took his third and final championship in 1987 during a heated battle with team-mate Nigel Mansell. After stints at Lotus and Benetton he retired from F1 in 1991, a triple title-winner. Piquet competed in the Indianapolis 500 for two years and is currently retired and runs several businesses in Brazil and manages his son Nelson Piquet Jr.

I am delighted to say I was invited to attend this fabulous and very worthwhile event by Antonio Marti, a member of the JEC, but also a member of the Club de Automoviles Antiguos de Valencia, a major sponsor of this event. Over 150 classic car owners volunteered to take part. and 500 children enjoyed being driven very fast around the circuit. Brass bands, police and fire sirens all added to the electric atmosphere. I will certainly be encouraging other members of the JEC in Spain to give up a little bit of their time next year to provide some less fortunate children the thrill of a life time. Eric Arnold

1992 was an important year for anyone remotely interested in performance vehicles. It saw the beginning of an ultimate supercar you could drive to the shops, pick up the kids or drive to work in. The McLaren F1 was made from 1992 to 1998. Afterwards, along came the LM, GT, GTR and the 2011 McLaren MP412C. For 2013 it’s the McLaren P1. Cost around £800K+ and limited to just a 500 production run.

2012 saw the F1 celebrate its 20th anniversary. 19 owners congregated in Italy to commemorate the special car's birthday. Among them were four GTR versions, two of which were converted back to road use from previous Le Mans racers. McLaren F1 Facts What Engine? A 6.1-ltr V12 built by BMW's M Division which pumps out 627bhp. How Fast? 0-62mph takes just 3.2 seconds, with the rev limiter removed it reaches 242.96mph on standard road gearing. How Efficient? 18.8mpg on average, with a best of 28.2mpg recorded. What Is The McLaren F1 LM? The LM is a road going version of the GTR, only five LMs were produced (as well as one prototype). They were all painted Papaya Orange in homage to McLaren founder Bruce McLaren's race colours.
