1 2 Ian Greene Jr. I believe that every design should have meaning. Stephen Gardiner once said, “Good buildings come from good people, and all problems are solved by good design. This compilation of works represents what I believe as a student of design and competently shows proficiency and ability to communicate ideas through the development of my thought process.

The Merger

South Bend, Indiana, USA

The purpose of this project was to correlate design components through comprehensive thinking and integration. The project was a mixed use development, consisting of two big box stores (Aldi’s and REI) a health club including a pool, speculative commercial, 180 residential units and on site parking for all were included. The design intention was for the site to be an active and successful space, bridging the surrounding areas. Thus providing a mixed use block with proper frontage, eyes on the street without losing the sense of order and dÊcor. With the correct placement of structures based on form and function, I derived a simple correspondence or balance of design components through comprehensive thinking and integration. This entire project was modeled in BIM (Revit) and rendered with Enscape.

Context Map South Bend, Indiana

The Site This project was located in the business district of South Bend, Indiana. Surrounding the site mostly north and east are a few residential developments and shelters like the Hope Center and the Salvation Army. The South Bend Cubs Baseball Stadium is located to the west and to the south of the site there are railway tracks and a bus terminal, these serve as the boarder to the industrial district of the city. Site Plan

This location was once known for its urban nature, where people walked about and interacted with the spaces. That has since declined. The city desires to revive the life it once had especially in the business and industrial districts. The project demonstrates the interrelation between city life and walk-ability that is needed in order to be successful with the restoration of these districts.

Ccacachi Health

Ccacachi, Juliaca, Peru

The Ccacachi project focuses on general education for health and wellness. It emphasizes connections to nature and outdoor life in its urban setting and considers the holistic impacts that new development will have on the community. This includes restoration of the RĂo Coata Riverfront as a healthful destination. The proposal seeks to provide efficient spaces that are functional and help to uplift the character of Christ, presenting a model development for the city. This Project was a collaborative effort done in partnership with Faith Read and Ryan Davis. It was apart of a larger urban development in Juliaca Peru, by the Andrews University School of Architecture Graduate class of 2019. This entire project was completed in BIM (Revit) and rendered with Vray and Enscape.

The Site

This 1.3 hectare site is planned to be a center for health ministry and outreach. It overlooks Río Coata and enjoys proximity and easy access to some of Juliaca’s newest neighborhoods. This is a place where health needs can be met: dental work, physical therapy and rehabilitation, as well as education about nutrition and healthy lifestyles. The Lake Titicaca Mission operates the Ccacachi Church, which built trust in the community.

Island House

San Salvador, Bahamas

The Island House is an ongoing project, involving clients that wanted a custom dodecagon shaped home. Due to the clients living in a region that is constantly hit by hurricanes . The shape would lend itself to minimum damage caused by hurricanes. This phase of the house focuses specifically on their kitchen and master bathroom. The kitchen is on the first floor of this 2 level home and the master bathroom is on the second level. This project was developed by hand sketching, drafted in Sketchup and Revit and then rendered with Vray.

Kitchen

The kitchen was designed with the standards of the National Kitchen and Bath Association. Its form takes that of the round house.

Hinkley Commons

Benton Harbor, Michigan, USA

Hinkley Commons was a client based project done in Benton Harbor, Michigan. The client desired a residential development designed with the use of shipping containers. Due t the location of the project being near old railroad tracks, the design intent and parti concept was the old railroad and the units were developed to look like a train on a track. The scheme was chosen to emulate the art district in the local area. Due to the climate and the limited space, the design includes a shed roof to allow for more head space and natural light. It also opens up to the outdoors to allow the large porch area to serve as extended space. This Project was completed using only hand drafting.

Sketching and Watercolor

The ability to visually create or recreate ideas has always been important to me. I am fortunate that I can visualize my ideas through and in sketching I have found that this amplified my ability to understand buildings and how they are designed. The following images displays some of my freehand sketching and rendering representation through pencil ink and watercolor.
