INTENSITY The Crucifixion of Jesus Project: Memorial Space / 3weeks Advisor: Rui-Han Jin Architect Year: 2005.03 Taiwan In this fanciful practice of the memorial architecture, I was required to choose an event or a character to design a memorial [space] at the cliff. In this way, I choose the Crucifixion of Jesus to carry out in practice how architecture transforms the historical event, and brings out the core value of the character in a kind of the severe place. Before starting to design, I try to comprehend the details of the Crucifixion, and find out a sequence of elements in the crucified event into a kind of commemorative apparatus. Through a sequence of events and elements, visitors can experience a process of the suffering event and physiological or psychological pains Jesus suffered.

Site Selection

Among five types of cliffs, I choose the second one for the project site, because it is the highest of all, and its slop rate is greater than the others. Also, we can overlook the mountains and the river in this area at the cliff.

The Crucifixion When Jesus was arrested, he was sentenced, tried, and scourged. He was mocked by the crowds, and was severely beaten by Roman soldiers. Then, Jesus was forced to carry the cross for his crucifixion. As he stumbled to carry the cross to Golgotha, the crucifixion place, he fell down several times. When he arrived at Golgotha, he was nailed, and hung on the cross until he was dead. Scourging

Route about 0.6Km walk 30~50 mins

As Jesus carried the cross along the Via Dolorosa to Calvary, he was forced forward carrying the cross. He fell down three times, and stumbled due to the heaviness of the wooden cross and the injury from being scourged. The distance from Via Dolorosa to Calvary is approximately 0.6 kilometer, taking per person 30~50 minutes to walk there. Via Dolorosa

05 Torture Process Diagram Based on the Bible and the film the Passion of the Christ, I insert several derived images from the film, demonstrating each element. In the first suffering “Scourging,” Jesus was beaten with forty whips, and experienced intense pain on his body. In the second suffering “falling,” Jesus bore the cross to Golgotha, and fell down three times on the way to the place. In the third suffering “nailing,” which was the most severe scene, he went through cruel treatments. He was nailed on hands and feet, and was pierced of his side. I study the process of the treatments, and separate them to three types: Tension, Pressure and Resistance.

Transformation of the Nailing Image When Jesus arrived to the Crucifixion place, he was nailed by thick metal nails. I transform the cruel treatments on Jesus’ body to the trend that the major walkway structure pushed from the rock surface to the inside part, penetrating the inner structure of rock to outside.

When the visitors enter the memorial space, they will find out a narrow dark crack at the entrance, which makes it hard to find the way. but still has a little light to see.

Scourging as Limited Slips Based on the image of caning Jesus suffered, I use 40 limited slips adding on the 3 slopes, divided these limited slips to 20, 13, and 7 in different slopes. The slopes symbol Jesus who carries the cross has to move on to the place that he crucifixion and cannot step his foots; the limited slips symbol that Jesus hardly moving fast because of

The nailing structure which has metal materials presents the dynamic movement that a nail seriously hammers into hands and foots. The first diagram shows that the body structure nailing to the cliff likes the nail nailing into hands, penetrating to the wood. The second diagram shows that when penetrating to the wood, the nail has fold to fix the object which transforms the structure folding to the ground. The last image shows that the ribs must hold a whole body supporting on the cross which can transform that column structures support the full structure.

After the three slops and plates, the view coming to the eyes is a ritualized field which is not providing the mourning space for visitors to recall what the Jesus dead for all human being. However, the final stage is a brightness field which means that Jesus is revival after dead and going to the heaven with father God. The space is not only a memorial space for Christian but also a hopeful and joyful space to rejoicing Jesus revival.

After analyzing the crucifixion, I try to transform the physical change from human body to the dynamical structure system. The nailing to insteps and a pivot of standing cross that the heavily body has a trend to fall down which can be transformed to a pivot nailing to the cliff that the huge structure has topple down. Jesus’ arms are forced to straighten which can transform the tension rods pulling the major structure. FRACTILE Reintegration of Temporary Urban Void Project: Concept Store of Automobile and Mobile phone / 7weeks Advisor: Heng-Cheng Guo Architect Year: 2006.03 Taiwan In this temporary urban void infilling project, the advisor guides us to apply a special concept which is called the fractal to deal with the urban issue. The fractal can be used in architecture in both little and large scale such as a single building and an urban growth. Two characteristics of the fractal in little scale is the building’s self-similarity and box-counting dimension. I tried to figure out how to apply the fractal mechanism on a single building even more in urban issue. Cases such as “Castel del Monte” (Apulia, Southern Italy 1194-1250) and “Palmer House” (Ann Arbor, Michigan 1950-1951) can display the fractal’s characteristics. Castel del Monte” is repeated the basic shape in different scale and “Palmer House” uses self-similar equilateral triangles in the plan. The aim of my project is to present how the fractal geometry is to define a new architectural model and an aesthetic in different ways.

Fractal Pattern 5

2 1

According to the research, there is a geometry triangle with the mathematical proportions of 1/2/ which is called the pinwheel triangle. I studied this proportion of triangle for the project and made it to self-similarity. Each triangle can be subdivided into 5 equal triangles. I used the geometry and linear algebra ways such as mirror, rotate and combine to define the initial triangle, making it infinity. Circular

Based on my study, I took out one part of the fractal patterns to development the structure of the building. First, I found a series of vertical lines and horizontal lines on the grid and overlaid these two dimension lines. Second, I set the marked shapes in different layers and separated it. Third, the same level of the shapes connected to each other and then different level of shapes also connected other side. Finally, the 2 dimension shape can transform to the 3D layers structure.

11 Existing Situation Analysis The site is situated on the margin of a huge urban block which forms a different situation in the developmental urban landscape. There is a strong and invisible boundary between the edge of the commercial activities and inside communities. The outside commercial activities are dynamic, on the contrary, the inside communities are static.

INTERFACE Between Water and Land Project: CNC Device Concept Model/8weeks Advisor: Professor Chen-Cheng Chen Year: 2007.03 Taiwan The project provided me using CNC (computer numerical control) machine to make a device. Before making a solid object, I become a city player, playing in the city. I found out there usually have something, called rails, near on the riverside, and that things are designed to defined land and water. I tried to devise an apparatus and setting the apparatus one the rails. I purposed that the device could blur the edge between water and land, and leading many activities to this edge. After the study from riverside, I made a solid device by CNC machine. The challenge of the making process is how to use really materials to create an effective apparatus by computers and manufacture machines.

Riverside of North Taiwan: Tamsui The site is situated between Tam-Sui River and riverside with many tourists every evening especially on the weekend. The riverside is spacious with fascinating scenery, sufficient sunlight and delicious finger foods. Tourists are attracted by all of these beautiful things.

Tourist Activities This riverside along Tam-Sui River had many activities such as biking, eating, resting and fishing. I found out that people always have a relationship with rails just like locking, sitting or fishing and so on.

1:1 Apparatus The original device is a complete container which surface involved many different convex and concave holes. The device can open up to five individual functional models. The function of five prototype models are created for tourist to their activities needed. Because the eating behavior is necessary for this area where a lot of garbage were tossed out by tourist, I made nine different levels of hole which allow tourist can throw caps they finished. Tourist can put caps to mark A holes and then caps will fall into inside container’s bag. Mark B holes are conspicuous bump apertures like volcanic craters which allow tourist putting their caps on craters and showing various caps on the surface. A

Type 02-shade There has sufficient sunlight in Tamsui area. The front of device can rotate to the up level, becoming a canopy. This kind of function provided tourist a large piece of shade to avoid the heavy sunlight.

Type 03-eating Through a convex hole at middle of right side, the back slab can rotate and block one the hole, forming a comfortable level table for tourist standing and eating meals. The aim is to solve a problem which supporting a temporary table for eating tourist on Tamsui waterfront.

29 Type 04-rest It seems become a life style that people who live in Tamsui or tourist used to sit on the riverfront seeing to the Tamsui river. The slab from the device supported on a rail structure suspending to the riverside. It breaks up the boundary between waterfront and river. People would not be blind their view when they see the river and mountain because of the rails.

Type 05-bike locking Increasing people like to bike at the waterfront with their family. This device provides a function for locking their bike. There are two groove on the slab, wheels can be block in it. This kind of function also has a stage of display.

EXTREME CITY The Temporary Exhibition at the outside Art Museum Project: Inter-Containers of S, M, L Sizes in the City/6weeks Advisor: Professor Chen-Cheng Chen Year: 2007.03 Taiwan According to the last multi-functional container project, this project aims to extend the traditional museum for those artists who cannot have exhibitions in museum. As an architect, I provided a series of exhibitions for artists utilizing the relationship between main museum and these different kinds of exhibitions to create their art work. This project called extreme city try to touch two different events in the city- art museum and extreme sport and collapses the boundary of these two events. Continue and discontinue are two concepts of the exhibition. Artists can study a kind of cultural phenomenon in two concepts.

Exhibition Proposal The traditional art museum is used to exhibition for those artists who have highly reputation or who has been created a plentiful work. I tried to enlarge a main art museum for those amateur artists who could create and exhibit their work in the extend exhibition.

CLUSTER URBANISM vertical neighborhood (Thesis Design) Project: Urban Design& Architecture Advisor: Hsin-Ping Lin Year: 2008 Summer, Taiwan In a city, if the speed of renewal and upgrade of urban architecture cannot follow the variation of times and economy, the city may encounter the fate of weakening and obsolete. In the situation of real estate in current Taiwan, the proportion of collection housing type is [more than other types of building. Moreover, current city has built numerous high-rise housings in order to pursue the benefits of economy. So, they sacrifice a lot of characters from climate conditions of Taiwan and urban context, causing the absence of community and alienation which strengthens the hierarchy. Admittedly, there is a question: why we tend to say nothing when we meet our neighbors? Why the best place for leisure is far away from our home instead of our backyard? Can we have comfortable neighborhood in the city? In my opinion, new models are needed.

Phenomenon We can find out the condition of housing from the data, the future family structure in Taiwan will likely be composed of three main types: core family (one father, one mother and children), couples and singles. That is to say, the trend of future society is a model of multiple groups and various life styles. Nature

39 Commercial Area Analysis Because of the rapid development of modern city, the commercial center has shifted to a well developed zone, declining the energy in old commercial centers. Original using volumes in old commercial centers comparatively are not enough for current city planning. On the other hand, the shift of commercial centers takes away a large number of people. This situation weakens the old area.

Terraces-Flexible Field Taiwan has developed a special type of building called terraces, which connects one house to another. This type of building can protect buildings from insolation and heavy rain. Terraces in the city contribute a kind of successional spatial experiences and have many social functions such as social contact and consumption. Terraces in Taiwan have various uses, which make the urban context more flexible.

Sharing is a means to reestablish the social relationship in today’s indifferent and alienated modern city. In order to refill new energies in this weakening city, building public spaces is necessary. Housing should not be a tool for making money, but should be an energy matrix, opening for communities and residents which can even influence the urban condition. Thus, sharing should be influential in cities, and maintains its energy.

43 City Stage and Plaza I propose opening the ground public space as a plaza that can provide people for shopping and performance. The ground plaza is a flexible space. The use of this space can be changed to a night market since it is one of the energetic symbols in Taiwan.

Vertical City Park The vertical park in this collective housing is a big urban living space that allows residential and pedestrians to use. For example, children can play with other children living in the community or elders can play chess with their friends. The park belongs to every resident, and every individual has freedom of right to use.

Family is the most basic unit of social structure. When a Taiwanese family is choosing a suitable residence, the homogeneity of the neighborhood influences people’s choice of residential environment. The similar clusters of housing not only keep the independence of a family but also coagulate the association between similar housing types.

Housing and Circulation

This collective housing is composed of 53 housing units, separately consisting of 6 to 8 single housing making a housing organism by 8 groups of different housing clusters. There have many various ways into housing due to filling the vertical streets in every cluster unit.

45 Residential Units These are five different types of housing units. Every household has a “vertical courtyard penetrating each floor, which not only brings sunlight and larger space in the center of housing, but also bond the relationship between the families because of the visual accessibilities of each interior rooms.

The in-between tunnels, separating public and private fields, connects housing and commercial zone. At the same time, the tunnels keep the privacy of housing. Different levels of slopes and elevators, which are elements of visual obstacle, define the relationship between the public and the private.

Vertical Neighborhood In the City There is a community’s living space in the middle center of the up building. On the other hand, three vertical cores which are placed in the east, west and north side in vertical dimension engender different ways to approach community. All individual families consist of a “micro city” which is a close connection between lands and human being.
