CASIS Headquarters | Fall 2012, Critic: Michael Young Center for the Advancement of Science in Space + Exhibition New York City is proliferated with an endless number of towers which present themselves to the city through their forms and their facades. In order to make a statement in this context, a building must challenge everyday conventions, rethinking the grid, rethinking its form. The new headquarters for CASIS is such an institution that wants to stand out and have an objective presence within the city. The proposal presents itself as a sculpture on the corner of 1st and 41st within the landscape of New York City. A study of the intersections of simple geometries - a series of stacked spheres - is used to generate a series of complex volumes, planes and lines forming a +100 foot tall atrium through which the public circulates.

svilokos | headquarters

A hierarchy of intensities exists, from dark [without illumination]

4

to light [full illumination], and is used to create an episodic series of environments and to delineate the divisions between public and private. The building is shrouded in a veil while aperture and transparency layer themselves across the four facades also allowing the pressures of the site to be recorded in section via layers that mark transparencies in various directions. The overall form is demonstrative of a variety of zones of solidity, permeability, openness, entry, view and rhythm.

Kings Road | Completed 2016, with KoningEizenbergArchitecture Design Stages Involved: Contract Administration Client: Combined Properties This 48-unit mixed-use project enhances social and physical setting by dividing housing into two pieces. A sculpted front lines the boulevard with stores and cafes, forming a strong identity. Behind, two-story townhome-stye units step down to meet the residential neighbors. A sunny walk street between allows townhouse doors and apartment patios to meet, generating a sense of community. Projecting balconies bring energy through the building, up to a faceted trellis that activates the roof deck. During the CA process, multiple elements of the design had not been resolved during any of the previous project phases. The design

of the custom perforation and its scope was once such element.

Uni Melb Student Precinct | Design Development, with KoningEizenberg Design Stages Involved: Competition through Pre-Design Client: University of Melbourne, Australia Collaborators: Lyons Architecture, Aspect Studios, Breathe Architecture, Greenway Architects, Glas Urban, and Architects EAT A new focus for campus life includes dining, study and event space. In a collaborative effort with Australian based architecture, landscape and historic firms, KoningEizenberg are co-guiding the masterplan of Uni Melb's new Student Precinct which includes improvements to eight existing buildings and the addition of three new buildings. For the winning competition entry, KoningEizenberg lead the design for the new John Smyth Building and is currently developing the building along with a second new building added during schematic svilokos | precinct

Bodegas TerraplÊn | Fall 2013, Critic: Andy Bow, Patrick Bellew, John Spence Aggregation with a Landscape The winery and hotel act as a natural continuation of the landscape built up and held by walls of rammed earth which course through the site. They are the ramparts for a road; for a path that takes a guest on a journey to the high point of the site. By using the physical substance that is not only close to the site, but is the site, the building visually expresses the project’s deep connection to the beauty that is the Riojan terroir whilst being a zero-carbon, sustainable gesture. To make these walls, the winery is buried deep within the cool, damp earth, and it leaves the hotel to become the mediator of the omnipresent heat and natural light that is characteristic of Rioja. The winery is condensed, compacted, efficient, and hidden away, while the hotel spills out into the landscape, puncturing the rammed svilokos | bodegas

earth walls reaching toward the light. As a guest enters into each

36

programmatic element belonging to the hotel, he/she moves from a space within the walls, through the walls, and then into the light. The effervescent light illuminates the hotel; it carves its way into the walls, as it warms the walls, and subsequently warms the spaces on cooler nights and winter days.

The room, the smallest unit of the project, was used as a means to develop the hotel portion of the scheme. After an ideal sketch of the room was done, it was arrayed into two different aggregations; a linear paring and a radial clustering. The rooms were furthered through the partnership with the winery and through their relationship to the site via views landmarks, access to light, and interaction with the rammed earth walls.

MusuemLab | Construction, with KoningEizenberg Design Stages Involved: Pre-Design through Final Completion Client: Children's Museum of Pittsburgh Executive Architect: Perfidio Weiskopf Wagstaff + Goettel Architects A Carnegie Library’s legacy of innovation is revived as a testing ground for teen learning. The remodel of a historic library houses a maker space for teens, a charter middle school, and incubator space for non-profits in the education sector. Stripping back interior alterations that hid the original landmark reveals a “lovely ruin” that evokes local history and highlights the act of discovery. As with all projects, the design of the museum was continually evolving. Though, due to budget limitations and a constant series of discoveries during construction, that the preservation and restorations strategies were fully developed. The three pivotal spaces used to showcase the strategies are the Lobby, Grable Gallery and second floor Gathering Space.
