Beethoven is said to have loved the Eroica more than any of his symphonies apart from the Ninth. Originally dedicated to Napoleon Bonaparte and inspired by the French Revolution and the German Enlightenment, the Eroica is also a deeply personal portrait of the composer. Yearning to strike out on a new path and determined to overcome his encroaching deafness, Beethoven announced his triumphant resolve to overcome adversity with a bold new style and a symphony unprecedented in its length, rhythmic power and heroic spirit.

Beethoven the provocateur is revealed even in his First Symphony. Its tantalising opening teases before transforming into a symphony that is full of joy, urgency and goodhumour.

Beethoven’s revolutionary Fifth Symphony is an epic work that captures the transcendent spirit of the age. Described by the composer as “Fate knocking at the door”, the Fifth’s famous opening four notes launch a symphonic journey from tension to triumph, culminating in a finale of exhilarating power, BEETHOVEN Symphony No.4 exuberance and grandeur. The opening movement of Mahler’s magnificent Ninth Symphony was described by composer Alban Berg as “the most glorious he ever wrote. It expresses an extraordinary love of this earth, of Nature; of the longing to live on it in peace and to enjoy it to the very heart of one’s being.”In the passionate final movement one feels as if life is quietly slipping away into the shadows, breath by breath, until all that remains is an astonishing silence. It is an unforgettable experience.

Alban Gerhardt returns to Perth to perform Elgar’s beloved Cello Concerto. An impassioned lament for a lost world, Elgar’s final great work is his poignant musical response to the devastation and losses of World War I.

The Rusty Orchestra is an opportunity for amateur musicians aged 25 years and older to learn from the professionals. Sit side-byside with WASO musicians on stage at the Perth Concert Hall to rehearse and perform selections from two of the most well-known pieces in the symphonic repertoire.
