EnglishforSpecificPurposes(ESPSIG)- CurrentTrendsinESP
Changesanddevelopmentsonaglobalscaleoverthelastfewyearshaverevealedtoeachandeveryoneofusinvolvedin educationinsomewaythattheworldinwhichweareliving,studying,teachingandresearchingisfluidinnature.Trendshave developedexhibitingnewperspectivesofandapproachestodoingourjobswithinESPandwhatthismeansisthatthestatus quohaschanged,orischanging,beyondallrecognition.Thesecurrenttrendssurely,then,meritsharingwiththewiderESP community.
Inordertoexaminethisissuefurther,andsharenewdevelopmentsinourfield,theESPSIG’sPCEthemethisyearconsiders currenttrendsinthefieldofESPandthechanges,opportunitiesandchallengesithasundergoneinthepastfewyears,both withinESPintertiaryleveleducationcontexts,andinprofessionalcontexts.WewelcomeproposalsinanyareaofESP/EAP including,butnotrestrictedto,thefollowing:

•TheeffectwhichEMImayhaveonESP/EAPcoursedesign.

Thiseventwillbetakingplaceinahybridformatwithallfullypaiddelegatesreceivingjoininginstructionsnearerthetimefor bothformats.Thepricetoattendthiseventisthesame,whetheryouareattendingvirtuallyorphysically.
TheformatofthePCEdaywillcomprisetalksandworkshops,aswellasroundtablediscussionsbasedoneachofthese. Participantswillhavetheopportunitytointeractandsharetheirresearchthroughouttheevent,whichisreflectedintheformat.
ESOLSIG- ESOLinthe2020s:ChangingtheStory,ChallengingtheNarrative Thisyear’sESOLSIGPre-ConferenceEvent(PCE)celebratestheopportunitytoembraceanalternativepedagogictoolorstrategy, suchastheuseofstorytellingintheclassroom.ThisPCEwilladvocatetheadvantagesofusingstorytellingasaneducationaltool inlearningandteachingtoenhancelearners’languageandliteracyskillsandtoencouragelearnerengagementandinteraction inthelanguageclassroom.Wewillexplorehowstorytellingactivitiescanbeusedtoimproveunderstanding,motivateoral discussionandincreaseandpromoteinterestinglanguageusageinallfourskills.
ThisESOLSIGPCEisalsoanopportunitytoshareexperiencesanddiscussthechallengesregardingdailypracticesandwhatthis reflectsaboutourESOLlandscapesbeyondtheclassroomconcerningpolicy,strategy,fundingandresources.Thiswillprovide theprospectofdiscussingwaysESOLcommunitiescanmobiliseand‘galvanise’tochallengethecurrentESOLnarrative.It providesanopeningforlearners,practitioners,coordinators,andemployerstobeheard–tocontributeinarepresentativeway todebatesandconsultationaboutESOLissues(policy/dailypractice)-therebyassertingtheirperspectivewithinESOL landscapes.

OurtwoSpecialInterestGroups(SIGs)aimtoshareideasandbestpracticesinincorporatingtechnologically-advanced techniquesinteachingliteratureandinusingliteraturetoteachlanguage.

Whenconsideringlearningmaterials,it’seasytofocusonthestudent’sbook,andtooverlookthefactthatmaterialscreation involvesawidevarietyofothercomponents.Inour2023PCE,we’reexploringotheraspectsofourwork,includingthevarious elementsofacoursebookpackage,learnerreferencematerials,materialsthatteacherswritefortheirownclassrooms,and resourcesthatlearnersaccessthroughsocialmedia.Infact,we’llbetalkingabouteverythingbutthestudent'sbook!

TheTEASIGPre-ConferenceEvent(PCE)inHarrogatewillfocusonlanguageassessmentliteracyfortheclassroomfromthe perspectiveofdifferentstakeholders.Classroom-basedassessmenthasbeenanincreasingareaoffocusinELTquiterecently. Thereisawealthofresearchonlanguageassessmentliteracy(LAL)todowithteachers,whattheyshoulddotoattainit,andthe consequencesofthemnothavingit.LessattentionhasbeenpaidtotheLALoflearnersandotherstakeholdersinschool ecosystems.Inthisyear’sPCE,wewouldliketoexploreLALfortherangeofstakeholdersthatareengagedwithLALinthe classroomfromdifferentperspectivesintheteachingandlearningprocess,andraiseawarenessofhowincreasedLALthrough theschoolsystemcansupportandelevateteachingandlearning.
