Convergence of Modern Neuroscience and Eastern Contemplative Traditions “The faculty of voluntarily bringing back a wandering attention, over and over again, is the very root of judgment, character, and will. No one is compos sui [master of himself] if he have it not‌

Convergence of Modern Neuroscience and Eastern Contemplative Traditions “…An education which should improve this faculty [of attention] would be the education par excellence. But it is easier to define this ideal than to give practical directions for bringing it about.” - William James

“Like other demanding professions, teachers deserve and need methods of maintaining good executive function in the context of their elevated workrelated stress. Preliminary findings between 2005 and 2009 showed correlations between mindfulness training and increased thickness of cortical structures (i.e., grey matter) associated with attention, working memory, processing sensory input, EF, selfreflection, empathy, and affective regulation.” (Hölzel et al. 2008; Lazar et al. 2005; Luders et al. 2009).

“I’ve come to a frightening conclusion that I am the decisive element in the classroom. It’s my personal approach that creates the climate. It’s my daily mood that makes the weather. As a teacher, I possess a tremendous power to make a child’s life miserable or joyous … I can humiliate or heal. In all situations, it is my response that decides whether a crisis will be escalated or deescalated and a child humanized or dehumanized.” " "- Haim Ginott

The Story of Two Wolves An old grandfather is teaching his grandson about life. "A fight is going on inside of me," he said to the boy. "It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves. One is destructive - it is anger, jealousy, greed, judgment, and ego." He continued, "The other is constructive - it is joy, love, humility, discernment, kindness, and compassion. The same fight is going on inside you - and inside every other person, too. The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, "Which wolf will win?" The grandfather simply replied, " The one you feed."
