The IB Mission The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment. These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.
Procedures for becoming an IB World School
Authorization – a process to support schools in: • making the decision to become an IB World School • understanding the nature and requirements of the IB programme • defining their readiness to implement the programme • planning to sustain the programme in the long term.

Process of Authorization

Application for Candidacy • Once the school information form has been reviewed, you will receive a mail providing you access to log on to IBDOCs. • This provides you access to the application for candidacy form • A sample is available on the public website but the form is filled in online through IB DOCS. • ..\..\WSL Folder\INTRO to IB Standards Admin KL\Intro suite docs\PYPapplicationforcandidacy.doc • The school needs to be in existence (with students) before you apply for candidacy
• Complete Application for Candidacy on line IBDOCS by:
April 1st or October 1st Don’t leave it to the last minute!!
Supporting documents required with application for candidacy: • confirmation of legal status • written confirmation of financial support from authorities • school organizational chart • evidence of payment of non-refundable fee • action plan
Overview of Authorization Process
• Regional office reviews the application and notifies school the outcome of the candidacy application: • August for Applications submitted by April 1st • January for Applications submitted by October 1st • Successful schools get assigned an IB Consultant (September/March)

• Consultation process begins: • 20 hours of remote consultation each year for two years • One two-day consultation visit • Trial implementation for no less than one Academic Year. • Timely Professional Development
Mandatory Professional Development at the time of Authorization •
The head of school or designee must attend an IB category 1 workshop before submission of Application for Candidacy

The pedagogical leadership and all faculty who work with PYP students full- or parttime must all be trained in IB category 1 workshops.
It is expected that the professional development has taken place before the verification visit.
Consultancy • Consultants are assigned and begin consultation by March/September • 20 hours of remote consultancy & access to Basecamp for communication • 1 consultation visit (and report) & 1 End of consultation report • The visit dates are decided by the school and consultant (please let the IB office know) • The school is responsible for Hotel and local expenses • Travel (air) is organized by the consultant through the IB travel firm

Application for Authorization • Application for authorization can be submitted only after consultancy ends • Schools must implement the programme for at least one year before the verification visit • The form is similar to application for candidacy, some fields are pre-populated • Additional supporting documentation is required along with the application eg: sample planners, POI, policies, etc • After the application is submitted it takes 6 months for the IB office to organize the visiting team and logistics
• Visit to the school to verify school’s preparedness to become an IB World School • Report from the Regional Office with : • Commendations, • Recommendations and/or • Matters to be Addressed

Mandatory Professional Development at the time of Evaluation •
All heads (or designees) and teachers hired during the period under review are required to participate in IB category 1 or category 2 workshops, as applicable.

The IB expects the school to provide further opportunities for staff to attend IBrecognized professional development activities as evidence of its ongoing commitment to professional development and in support of the continuing implementation of the programme.

•Allow enough time – should take place over at least 12 months •Identify responsibilities and resources •Reserve significant formal meeting time •Define descriptors for implementation of practices •Provide clarification of the process to stakeholders •Inform the wider school community (Guide provides in-depth information on the requirements)

•Is required to take place over a minimum of 12 months •Must involve all stakeholders (governing body, leadership team, teachers, non-teaching staff, parents, students) • Is evidence based, drawing on existing school documentation and reflecting actual practice •Allows time for reflective meetings and discussion
