he fall is upon us and it’s one of my favorite times of the year. The kiddos are back in school, the temperatures are cooling off in Dallas and football is on TV. It’s prime patioweather and the changing of the season brings about a spectacular color palette throughout nature. Our cover story this issue, Fall Into Color, offers a bedroom design inspired by the depth of one of fall’s standout colors, orange, paired with gold and amethyst. It’s a stunning interpretation of comfort and elegance. My daughter, Jaylie, has a fun treat in store for the kiddos. She interviewed the daughters of the Hildebrandts (one of IBB designer Shannon Gidney’s clients) to showcase what they love most about their custom created bedrooms. Perplexed on the best option to cover your windows? Our resident window treatment expert, Danielle Valeri, offers up a plethora of knowledge on one of today’s hottest products ~ silhouettes. IBB Designer, Kevin Wild has a sneak peek inside a fun transformation he designed for Marriott. See what IBB’s designers are all swooning over as we highlight our favorite products for our “What’s New” feature. We had a fun-filled summer with lots of events! Check out our party pics from the party we hosted for the one-year anniversary of Modern Luxury’s Interiors Texas. Also, be sure to check out our events calendar for a list of some of the Fall’s swankiest soirees. I’m excited to announce that I’ve been asked to be a Style Spotter again for this Fall’s High Point Home Furnishing’s market. I’ll be competing amongst 9 of the top designers in the country in “Style Spotter Rewind” as we pin our favorite finds from the October 2013 market. Find out more details on our blog. DO'S &
DON'TS
BY IBB DESIGNER SHANNON GIDNEY SHANNON@IBBDESIGN.COM
do
don't
For more versatility over time, opt for neutral colors for your main pieces of upholstery. Trends can be used in accessories like pillows, tabletop décor and rugs. Don’t be afraid of color or pattern when it comes to the accessories, as those can be changed out as trends come and go.
Don’t forget the draperies. They soften and finish off a room. They make such a difference in a space and dress your windows.
Buy the best you can afford. Quality furnishings are built to last. Cheaper products will have to be replaced more often and therefore end up costing you much more money over time. Go for it. If you find a treasure that you feel you can’t live without, buy it. Remember, your home should be a reflection of you. Let your designer find the perfect spot for it. There are many fun and out of the box ways to display art and accessories. Look to your wardrobe when searching for your “core” colors or a new color scheme to design around. You typically dress in the colors that make you feel good. Add mirrors to a space to make it appear larger. Mirrors also allow light to bounce around a room and can help brighten a darker space. 8

Less is more. Don’t overdo a room. Carefully select and edit your accessories so that the room doesn’t feel cluttered. Don’t be afraid to add modern art into a more traditional space to give it a fresh new look. Don’t skimp on your light fixtures and lamps. Think of them as the jewelry of the home. Don’t get overwhelmed with trying to match everything. Most importantly, don't buy a set of anything! Matchy-matchy is boring and predictable. A successfully designed room is one that feels well thought out and put together.

t’s inspiring to look at the immaculately designed homes perfectly styled for the camera. Then it’s time to GET REAL! Design for Life offers solutions for your space that combine the purpose and function with style. With the holidays around the corner your dining space deserves attention. I say dining “space” instead of “room” because where we eat in our home has evolved dramatically in the last couple of decades. Where do you eat? Do you host formal or informal dinner parties? Is it a room you pass by until Thanksgiving or Christmas? If you have a designated dining room space that doesn’t get any love, would it be better used as a wine room or reading nook? Maybe you have a floor plan that incorporates dining in an open space that needs to be both casual and elegant. Your frequency of use and tolerance for wear is a big influence on the selection of wood finish and texture for your dining table. A darker wood with a high sheen will show more imperfections. If it is not your everyday table and you understand that scratches become part of the character of the piece, this finish can work for you! If even the smallest imperfections drive you crazy or you have a young child that might use the table as a runway for his toy plane, then let’s look for something in a lighter tone or inherently more distressed. There are a wide variety of metal tops now available that range from rustic galvanized metal to shiny zinc. The metal will scratch but it really works with the industrial chic design of this table.
Moving on to the dining chair, I love an upholstered chair for both casual and formal dining spaces to break up the large plane of wood from the table. I know you folks out there with kids are cringing (my own 4 year old is quite the disaster master!) Don’t fret! There are several options that combat runaway meatball spaghetti sauce. Patterned fabrics work great to disguise spills. Another good option is using outdoor fabric on your indoor dining chairs. They have come a long way in style and texture. Faux and real leathers offer durability and easy cleaning with plenty of embossed textures and fun colors choose from. Good design takes many factors into consideration and your lifestyle should be at the top of your designer’s list whether you are going for a multipurpose, kid (and messy adult) friendly dining space or a fine dining room complete with heirloom furniture that generations will enjoy. Function and form applied to your dining room is a recipe that is sure to leave one satisfied at the end of every meal.

FALL IS UPON US. The changing of the seasons and the magnificent beauty created throughout nature during this time is awe-inspiring. Nature is a great place to get inspiration for your home’s design. There are so many extraordinary colors and textures in nature. We selected one of Fall’s standout colors, orange, paired with gold and amethyst to create this glamorous and colorful master bedroom. SILK STRIPED CHAIR WITH GOLD LEAF DETAIL By: John Richard
An eglomise mirrored bed by Lillian August sets the tone for a sophisticated and elegant retreat. The four-poster bed features an upholstered headboard that we covered in a creamy neutral fabric. This allowed the rich amethyst Euro shams to pop off of the back of the bed. We used crisp white sheets with orange stitching and brought color back to the end of the bed with a matelassÊ in pumpkin. Small doses of pattern are introduced with the center pillow in zebra print and the striped silk bench at the end of the bed to keep the design from being too busy. The artwork really ties the whole color palette together. The abstract painting helps to balance the height of the four-poster bed. A classic sunburst mirror gives visual weight to the wall space above the headboard. One of my favorite pieces in this room is the quatrefoil lamp in gold by Suzanne Kasler. Its classic design and clean drum shade are a perfect fit for the room. Instead of placing nightstands on either side of the bed, we opted to do a mirrored desk with gold trim on one side and a bookcase on the other side. The bookcase, by Thomas O’Brien for Hickory Chair, is one of my all time favorite pieces. The upholstered bookcase contains over 3,800 nail heads in its design. An orange leather chair makes for a very comfy desk chair. Adding to the comfort of this room is the striped neutral shag rug underneath the bed. In my opinion, this bedroom exemplifies the perfect combination of elegance, style and comfort. A color palette inspired by Fall, texture and carefully selected statement pieces offer a pleasant getaway to relax in at the end of the day.

his part of the year in Texas offers some of the most beautiful weather in the country. Too often we are so busy with our day-to-day routine we forget to take a moment and enjoy fall. The easiest way to enjoy this beautiful season is to spend more time outside enjoying the cooling temperatures and patio weather. Outdoor spaces are a true extension of your home. Be unconventional and bold with your patio to provide a fun and exciting space beyond your four walls. One example is this fun patio make-over for the Dallas Marriott Suites Medical/ Market Center. Before, the Marriott used this space as an outdoor dining patio only. It was important to for them to still have this function but they also needed seating for their bar clientele in the evening. They wanted to bring a youthfully fun vibe to the space while keeping everything durable enough for hotel/hospitality. Now the Marriott Suites patio has a spice of life and downtown urban flair by layering in splashes of color and interesting textures. Seating groups became more defined and intimate by grounding them with outdoor friendly rugs. Vibrant art is another element that made the outdoor space feel complete.
Bring the indoors outside to create a cozy atmosphere and start living beautifully in your outdoor space too!

ART SCENE & ART, a single word that may bring feelings of intimidation, nervousness, encouragement, discouragement and at the same time conjures up a sense of curiosity to all. It is this small 3 letter word that can cause these and many more feelings to surface—it is a powerful word. The term "art world" may intensify these related words and feelings. The term "art gallery" can cause extreme sensitivity to the adjectives listed. Owning Craighead-Green Gallery with my partner, Steve Green, for the last 21 years has been an amazing experience. To learn what works and what does not work in our business has been an ongoing lesson. One thing that I discovered early on was that there are so many preconceived notions about galleries. It was mind boggling trying to think of ways to make visitors more comfortable and confident. I felt my first task was to debunk the notions that were not true or that could become "not true" about the gallery world and the art for sale. Knowing that art and galleries can be a fun and enjoyable place to be shared was the message that we needed to get out. I first thought I knew that our gallery needed to be user friendly with open spaces visible from outside. Also important was to be sure there was always a sense of equality between the gallery and the visitor. I have walked into numerous galleries and not been greeted or even acknowledged. A promise I made to myself is that it would never happen in our new gallery. Once the gallery was up and running we quickly discovered that simple gestures such as a friendly "hello" or "let us know if you have any questions" quickly made visitors feel comfortable. Many years have passed since that initial time of discovery and learning what works and what does not work. I believe that today many gallerists feel the same as I did 20 years ago. Visitors may still walk in feeling a bit uncomfortable, but within a short period of time they understand that there is no need to feel that way and that there are no "stupid questions." The mystery of "what should be felt or understood" is in truth only about what the visitor felt and understood. It is our job to represent the artist the best we can and to share information about them and their work on any level needed. Galleries are fun places—places to relax, view, have conversation and just simply to take time to think. Art can allow us to feel and see this and much more. We have witnessed an abundance of newcomers to both our gallery and the gallery world in general. A sense of confidence from our visitors asking questions of all sorts has become commonplace. We encourage and want that openness. The former shroud of secrecy concerning art and galleries seems to have lifted, which is what I had hoped would happen all along.

Emma's Room
Kids Co Jaylie Geyer is a third grader who loves dancing, reading and hanging out at IBB with her mom and Grammy.
I spend a lot of time in my room and our playroom. I think every kid should have a super cool room or place to hang out. I had so much fun interviewing Emma and Grace Hildebrandt (the twin daughters of clients of IBB designer Shannon Gidney) recently to see what they love best about the amazing bedrooms Shannon created for them.
EMMA’S ROOM: Jaylie: What is your favorite thing about your room? Emma: I love how I am a part of the mural in my room. I love ice-skating so I am painted on the wall in my ice skating outfit. There is also a princess castle painted on another wall. Jaylie: I love the colors in your room. It’s so bright and cheery! Emma: Me too! Even my bathroom has all of the fun colors! Jaylie: Your bed is so cool. Emma: It’s like a princess bed. My favorite part is the canopy and the poufy skirt at the bottom! Jaylie: You even have a built-in desk to color and do your homework! That’s awesome! Emma: Yes. Shannon designed a special chair for me and decorated my bookshelves to match my room.
GRACE’S ROOM: Jaylie: What’s your favorite part about your room? Grace: It shows how much I love animals. My mural has all of my favorite animals painted into it. Jaylie: I love your window seat! It looks like the perfect place to read a book. Grace: I love my window seat. It’s really comfy. Jaylie: You have a built in desk too. Do you use it a lot? Grace: Yes. I love to color and draw. My mom says I’m a great artist. Jaylie: I agree. You draw very well! 18
