Culture and Heritage

The Samodun Festival 2014

The rich cultural diversity of Nigeria is truly reflected in the city of Ibadan. From the Olubadan's Palace the custodian of culture and tradition of the Ibadan people to Mapo Hall which has become part of the heritage and pride of the city, Ibadan is truly one of the cities in Nigeria that proudly preserves its culture and gives everyone in the city an opportunity to embrace and understand the culture of this great city. Black History Month, a universally celebrated commemoration, was recognised in Ibadan this year. The Centre for Black and African Arts and Civilisation organised celebrations held at the Conference Centre of the University of Ibadan. Various speakers, intellectuals and noteworthy personalities gathered in Ibadan to observe the remembrance and discuss pertinent issues while internationally recognised folk entertainer, Jimi Solanke, provided musical accompaniment to the celebrations. The Samodun Festival, celebrating Yoruba culture in splendour and style was held on February 14th and 15th. The festival began on St. Valentine's Day, a day globally renowned for the celebration of love. Accordingly, Oyo celebrated a love of cultural heritage as the festival progressed. Participants were drawn from all the local governments of the state along all the Yoruba speaking states to celebrate this second Samodun Festival, which was initiated by the Oyo State Governor, Senator Isiaka Abiola Ajimobi. Delegates from all the Yoruba speaking states in the Southwest including Kwara and Kogi States met in Ibadan to a feast of rich cultural heritage of the Yoruba people. The theme of this year's Samodun Festival was Asa Parapo. The celebrations highlighted elements of Yoruba language, music, art, dress and food. Keeping pace with the festivities, the general dress code included traditional attire such as Buba or Dansiki and Sokoto for men; Iro and Buba with a head tie or hairstyles such as Suku and Kojusoko for the women. Celebrations mainly took place at Lekan Salami Stadium, Civic Centre and Oyo State Cultural Centre. The festival featured a cultural parade, Oleku night and food fair and was attended by Nollywood artistes such as Dele Odule, Saheed Balogun, Jide Kosoko, Ronke Ojo (Oshodi Oke) and Muyiwa Ademola among others.

Mapo Hall, is a British colonial hall built on the famous Mapo Hill “Okee Mapo" in the centre of Ibadan the capital of Oyo State. It was constructed by Engineer Robert Taffy Jones during the residency of Sir Captain Ross and commissioned by Sir Creame Thompson, British governor and commander in chief of Nigeria during colonial regime on October 5, 1929. In the year 1829, the warrior refugees escaping the ravages of the Fulani wars in the Guinea Savanna first settled in this hilly location. Mapo Hill was a palpable strategic spot for military defensive purposes because it gives a view of the surrounding country for miles around. In front of the hall is the statue of one of the greatest warriors of Ibadan, Balogun Oderinlo. The hall also features a small museum where the chain used to bond tax evaders can be found, pictures of past Ibadan kings and other historical materials.

During the British colonial rule, the hall was the main administrative and civil centre. Mapo Hall suffered decline but was refurbished in 2008 by the Oyo State government. The hall is used as a conference centre, event centre and for public use. Mapo Hall is a pride to the people of Ibadan and symbol of unity among the Yoruba as a whole.

Dining Out

When it comes to cuisine, the city of Ibadan offers a plethora of options for both visitors and residents with hearty appetites. Continental cuisines and local delicacies are served at the many restaurants and eateries available across the city's axis. While the city is better known for its local delicacy of Yam Flour (Amala) and Bean Soup (Gbegiri), there are also various south western specials such as yam porridge (Asaro), Ofada Rice and solids such as Eba, white amala (lafun), fufu (actually eastern originated), cooked beans and the ubiquitous, ever-sought after pounded yam. These meals are available with a variety of soups, meats, fish and snails. They are available at local eateries called "bukas" and the Africana sections at restaurants. Staple foods such as jollof rice and fried rice can be found at almost every restaurant and eatery. Fast food such as burgers, French fries, meat and chicken pies are available in most eateries in Ibadan. Ice cream and various deserts and confectionery are available at several eateries and hangouts. Continental dishes such as Chinese and Italian food are available at selected locations too. In conclusion, when it comes to traditional food and gourmet cuisine, Ibadan is not going to disappoint your taste buds.

Accommodation Ibadan, a city that spans over a whopping three thousand square kilometers surely does justice to that immense size by offering a wide selection of accommodation options which are available around the city. From the fustian to the conservative, there is a profusion of alternatives available to tourists, visitors or even passers-by who are seeking to spend a night, week or even longer. The various types of temporary accommodation include hotels, motels, day inns, and

guesthouses with options of bed and breakfast. These hotels and guesthouses are sprawled at various serene locations in the city at affordable prices While there is no dead set way of ranking these accommodation outfits, hotels vary in sizes and the facilities available differ. There are deluxe rooms (which offer exquisite room service, good entertainment, gym, swimming pool etc.) and fairly austere ones with equally good

services save the luxury available in the former. In all of these lodges, generators are available on standby leading to uninterrupted power supply. Security guards are available in almost all the lodges to ensure the safety of guests.

Sports

The Evolution of Ibadan Polo Club Polo has been played in Ibadan since 1930's. During this period, the club featured consistently in the annual calendar of the Nigeria Polo Association. Participants in the Annual Polo Fiesta have come from all over Nigeria as well as Ghana, South Africa, Argentina and the U.K. Polo is played all year round in Ibadan, thanks to our well drained and gently rolling field which allows mini tournaments and regular visits by Lagos Polo club in particular. Prominent players since the 1950s include the late Hugh Burgess, Robin Atkinson , John Hony , Albel Comben, Colonel Dangiwa Umar (rtd), Dr. Tomi Asuni, all former Polo captains. Other distinguished former presidents who played polo, include Arthur Day, Chief Victor Allam, Hon. Justice Akin Apara, Brig Rabiu Aliyu, Brig. C.O Rotimi (rtd), Col. Yohanna Madaki, Bankole Oyeniyi, Femi Oladele and Ade Alakija who passed on while holding the exalted office in 2009. Muyiwa Ige though a

27

non-polo playing president, supported polo in conjunction with his playing cousin Leye Igeso also Tunji Adepeju. Over the years, Ibadan has also proven to be a veritable source from which current players of national and international fame have been nurtured. We are particularly proud that Dawule Baba (+4), Mamudu Shehu (+3), Ibrahim Audu (+3), all held the mallet and went through the rudiments of polo families such as the Saffiedies transiting to Lagos in the 80s. They were soon to be followed by other homebred players such as Yinka Akinkugbe, Kehinde Soyanmo, Femi Otudeko and the Asunis in the 90s. However, what we ceded to Lagos we received in the manifold by the acceptance into our fold of Lagos based polo loving families such as the Berberopoulous and the Edet families whose contributions to the sustenance of polo in Ibadan have been consistent and appreciated in the past two decades. It will be an understanding history to say it's been all about horses and polo

at our club all these years. The convivial atmosphere for which Ibadan polo club had become legendary has been sustained by family members such as the Popoola Amoo, T.A Ariyo, Jide Adeleye and currently social/polo aficionados Babajide Olatunde Agbeja, Dr. Niran Olurin, Labi Adeyemi, Chief Boye Oni, Professor Owoeye whose son is an active polo player, Gboyega Akundeko , and our president, Labi Adeyemi whose son, Bola Adeyemi is also a (1+) polo player. With a new generation of enthusiastic players who are following in the steps of the trail blazers two generations past, polo will always find a fertile ground in the ancient city of Ibadan. Among dedicated contemporary players are Bola Adeyemi, Femi Oyeniyi , Konyin Owoeye and Deoye Ajibade.
