The Ultimate Kids Playground
Bermuda is one of the most kid-friendly places on earth. Whatever your kids’ interests — ballet or baseball — there’s almost certainly an active group for them to join. Here’s a sampling:
Two groups that are the Bermuda Youth Sports Programme (BYSP) at the west end of the island, and the Youth Athletic Organisation (YAO) at the east end. No one is turned away, and every child gets a chance to play. These organisations (April to June), soccer (October to December), and basketball (January to March).
There is also a thriving youth roller blade hockey group that meets at Admiralty Park on the North Shore (www.bermudaballhockey. pointstreaksites.com). Golf lessons are available at Port Royal Golf Course (www. portroyalgolfcourse. com) and through the Bermuda Junior Golf programme (www. bermudagolf.org). Tennis is available through Coral Beach & Tennis Club (www. coralbeachclub.com) and the National Tennis Center (www.blta.bm).
There is a popular junior programme at the Bermuda Squash Club (www.bermudasquash.com).
As you would expect on an island, there are numerous swim clubs. Harbour Swim Club (www. harbourswimclub.bm), Sharks (www. sharksswimclub.bm) and Dolphins (www.dolphins.bm) are three of the most popular.
Those who wish take gymnastics seriously should consider joining the Bermuda Gymnastics Association (www.bermudagymnastics.bm).
Bermuda’s premier dance school is In Motion. It classes for children 18 months right on up through all age groups, with classes in jazz, tap, ballet, modern dance, and more. (www.inmotionbda.com).
For young people interested in the environment, we recommend joining the Bermuda Zoological Society (BZS), the support charity for the aquarium, www.bamz.org.
Similarly, the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute has many camps and activities geared toward children, www.buei.bm
Schools close during the summer in Bermuda for up to 11 weeks. But don’t worry — a seemingly endless number of summer camps spring into action.
