DISSOLVE OF THE GRID Noticeably, the characteristics of Prora, RĂźgen, is the dominating grid structure of the enormous proportioned complex. Time has effected the cycle of the site as nature has started to infiltrate the structure, setting up its own agenda. The project seaked to develop the established relation between concrete structure and nature by dissolving the sense of grid. An art form and an act of transformation were chosen as defining factors for the process. As music requires specifics according to acoustics and dance (art form of my partner) needs adjustments in relation to movement, the project involved fixed and flexible spaces to respond to these requirements. This created visual and physical connections both vertically and horizontally and created a coherence that started to dissolve the sense of grid while still working along with it. The infiltration of nature was expressed by gardens breaking the facade reaching into the structure.

SOCIAL DESIGN - THE ROUTE OF KASTED In a collaboration with studio Democracity the course aimed to co-create ideas, visions and concrete proposals for the development of Kasted. The village of Kasted has an active residential association and visions for the future, which is why it is an interesting village to start the communication on a common process between the students and residents of Kasted. Through two workshops the residents informed us about their village, values and difficulties by means of generative methods such as collages and creating a map of cultural, natural, traffical and service oriented values and issues. The outcome was a proposal for The Route of Kasted - a cycle path, which creates easy access to the neighbouring cities and an experience path that connects to the experiences of nature that are unique at this place.

22

PATH BETWEEN THE FIELDS

PATH BY THE ROAD

PATH BETWEEN APPLE TREES

PATH BY THE MARSH

The paths between the fields are primarily made to create a faster passage for the residents and at the same time a cycling path not i direct connection the the road, but invites to a short ride between the fields.

The paths by the road are to be seen as paths for transportation between Aarhus, Tilst, Lisbjerg and Kasted in the daily day. The distance to the road creates safety for the cyclist.

The path through the new orchard is coherent with the path by the river. It is possible to gather apples and at the same time the trees function as sound isolation from the noise of the highway.

The system of the paths by the marsh is for both the cyclists and the ones who want to hang around in the area with the possibilities of fishing and watching the life of the birds in Kasted.

PATH BY REVELHĂ˜J

PATH BY THE RIVER

The path by the hill offers an opportunity to walk uphill and have a look at the view from the highest spot in Kasted.

The path by the river is another offer to enjoy nature around the village and a pleasant place to walk the dog.

INSTANT AARHUS The material and its visual qualities - transparent, though alters the view of the surroundings into blurred silhouettes. As a reflection on misty water, details and color are diminished into vague nuances, with less ability to define distance. Subsequently, the experience of the internal space is enhanced, despite it only being conceived by the plastic. With knowledge of the material, a path is defined. Distorted -manipulating with the perception of where and how the path untangles. The contrast to the experience of the path, is the encapsulated exterior space. A place where one can meet without material limitation, embraced by the context, while enclosed by the path.

25

COVERING / UN-COVERING RELATIONS The investigation on tension and compression trifled with the question of the consequence of turning the tension structure upside down using the same form creating different load and spatial situations. The large photo shows a model of textile stiffened by plaster to carry its own load when turned upside down, keeping the shape from the original hanging tension structure. The outcome was a selfsupported compression structure. The spatial change, which arose by the turning upside down raised questions in order to how the change of one single factor can create a completely different situation and experience.

26

PHENOMENON: WIND Wind is an omnipresent phenomenon. It is present in its absence. Absence in the sense that it is invisible and intangible. It is a such an ephemeral phenomenon that it needs interaction with an object to be understood. At least visually. Wind can be a factor in the shaping of landscapes. It may erode, transport and deposit materials. In the interaction between the wind and the object new shapes are created over time. It is impossible to foresee the result of these shapes as the atmospheric pressure changes in both force and direction, which affect the behaviour of the material and thereby the outcome of the interaction. A change of shape of an object is a way to materialise the intagible concept of wind. The registration of the candle in the wind, where the outcome is hard if not impossible to control. Naturally, then the question is how one could get the influence on the progress of events.

27

COVERING / UN-COVERING RELATIONS The phenomena in interaction with the structure - the qualities of the transparency and the translucency of the the differentiating materials playing with the light and the shadows. Enhancing the wind in the pre-stressed membranes for the visual experience of the phenomenon by the contrast from the outside of the structure to the inside where the wind calms down. One is enclosed by membranes, disconnected from the surroundings where one at the same time - by the light of the sun - find it possible to read the structure on the inside of the membranes. The ephemerality of the phenomena is made tangible through the hard data of the diagrams on the path of the sun and the cycle of the wind.

VEHICLES FOR EVENTS Music is movement - movement is music - the essential thesis where the project grew from. The idea that the form and rhythm of a space defines how to move in space. The rhythm created by the sizes and gaps between the windows and the invitation to certain movement by the angles and the openings of the architecture. “It is not a question of knowing which came first, movement or space, which molds the other, for ultimately a deep bond is involved - Bernard Tschumi

A Thinking Place is a concept of a space where the sky is the limit. Here, the people will be in contact with the one thing that can be found any place in the world; the sky. The intension is to make the people connect with the sky, to create a space where one can retreat from the world of today. Here, they can stop for a moment and forget about the daily life outside

The Wasteland concept is “one man’s trash, another man’s treasure”. It is a space in constant growth, In both width and height. A kind of fantasy world where the objects inhabit the space and the people are able to pick out and develop their new treasure

34

The Area in a New Perspective is a concept of looking at the neighbourhood viewpoint. Going beyond the regular view eye level, theese three spaces put you in levels to perceive the area differently. Th top of the roof over the partly observer/pa hidden viewer placed in the ground

EDIBLE LANDSCAPES Skjoldhøjparken is an area of a huge amount of enclosed parcels. The idea is to create common ground within the grid, based upon medieval structures and in dialog with the past city structures of the area. By creating a void in Skjoldhøj, the opportunity of getting together is made possible for the inhabitants. The void will be defined by surrounding apple trees and within there will be activities based upon recycling, such as hot composting, midsummer celebration, growing mushrooms, and picking wild berries. By opening up the hedges the monotone, long empty patks will be a part of the life in the parcels and invite for social meeting on the way to the common space. With the water running underground, the opportunity for working atmospherically with the elements are made possible, a reconnection with water, earth and fire.

WINDOW EXPANDER Mapping the intangible, such as the life that the shadows created in my room, raised the awareness of the obstacles that the light passes when penetrating the space. This leading to the thought of using these obstacles operatively and investigate the effects of the filtered light. The play of the diffuse and the direct light defined by a mechanism controlling translucent panels to interdependently let light in and filter it. By this a choice of view is simultaneously a consequence of using the mechanism and the light’s interaction with the space is defined by the adjustment of the translucent panels.

PROJECTED FUTURES On the basis of three films; Manufactored Landscapes, Blade Runner and Mirror the group developed three scenes in models trying to project the future. The theme of the models was construction through deconstruction where the intension was to let the wax part of the midmost model melt and thereby construct a new reality by means of the deconstruction.
