was a special year for ROSE. At that time – when the last German

emperor Wilhelm II. was still ruling – Heinrich Rose opened the smallest bicycle shop of Bocholt, Germany. This is when ROSE was born. When his grandchild Erwin Rose opened the doors of BIKETOWN in 2005, his big dream fnally became reality. With the bright and and airy glass facade construction, he set new standards for bicycle shops and thus ensured

A REAL ENDURO BOOM SPREADS ACROSS THE COUNTRY, RACES SHOOT OUT OF THE GROUND LIKE MUSHROOMS AFTER A RAIN, RIDERS AND PROMOTERS PRAISE THE TREND AS THE ESSENCE OF MOUNTAIN BIKING. THERE IS NO RAZOR-SHARP DEFINITION OF WHAT ENDURO EXACTLY MEANS. WITH TRAVELS BETWEEN 140 AND 180 MM AND THE USE OF ALL WHEEL SIZES, THERE IS AN ENORMOUS RANGE. or me as a cross-country marathon rider, enduro has always been some kind of a unicorn. Neither a horse nor

a bull, but grazing on the same pasture. It was high time to cast my net wide, catch the mythical creature and see what it can do. There is no better way to test this than to take part in an enduro race. The Harz Mountains are not only home to the Brocken witch, but also to Germany’s most northern enduro race. The boys and girls of the club Mountainbikefreunde Oberharz e.V. had put so much effort, energy and passion into this race weekend and into preparing the ground! They had done an outstanding job preparing the tracks and clearly arranging them. A

It was high time to cast my net wide, catch the mythical creature and see what it can do.

The next morning brought lots of fuffy clouds on a blue sky and a well-dried track. With nervous suspense, we arrived at the start at the prescribed time 8:30 o’clock. The sun was already waiting for us as well as an extremely relaxed and mixed group of riders.

Unlike at marathon races where everything is clearly structured and there are strict rules, there was nearly every age group and every kind of travel represented here: teenagers, women and even unicycles. This was not what we had expected. Relaxed, we joined the queue of a diverse crowd of riders waiting.

Across country. There are 31 kilometres in total to do.

Our surprised faces hadn’t gone unnoticed. “Your frst enduro race?” the group asked. We nodded. “Well then, have fun!” they replied. Fun – this is what it should be about, however, there were also clear rules. There was a start time from 8:30 to 14:30 o’clock. During this period of time, you had to do 31 kilometres in total, including 6,5 downhill kilometres divided into seven stages. The seven downhill sections were timed separately and the times added to the total time. The linking sections were not timed. As long as you fnished all sections until 14:30 o’clock, you could even ride an easy-going pace. While we were waiting, I talked to the people around me. The atmosphere was brilliant and the anticipation growing. Of course, no one had come here to fnish last, however, the prevailing atmosphere rather reminded me of a big tour than of a competition. Every 30 seconds, another rider crossed the starting line and I was moving more and more to the front. A fnal check of the bike. For my maiden enduro ride I opted for the ROSE SOUL FIRE 2. BOBBY‘S STYLE!

BRAKING TECHNIQUE _

HI! MY NAME IS BOBBY ROOT AND TODAY, I WOULD LIKE TO SHOW YOU THE RIGHT TECHNIQUE FOR USING THE BRAKE. A SPECIAL FOCUS WILL BE ON THE FRONT BRAKE. IT BRAKES VERY EFFICIENTLY, BUT IT HAS TO BE USED CAREFULLY, OTHERWISE YOU WILL FLY OVER THE HANDLEBAR. I HAVE DIVIDED THE COMPLETE COURSE OF MOVEMENT INTO FOUR MAIN STEPS.

1

2

3

44

CYCLESTORIES

_ BOBBYSSTYLE

Freeride legend and ROSE team rider Bobby Root shows you how it should be done!

Bobby Root

1. APPROACH Look out for a track where you can gain enough speed. The faster the downhill, the further to the back the centre of gravity of your body and thus of your bike should be.

2. WEIGHT The most effcient way to get full power out of your front brake is to shift your weight even further to the back. This can be done by stretching your arms and shifting your hip behind the saddle. Apply the front and the rear wheel brake simultaneously and moderately. Make sure the brakes do not block! A blocked rear wheel is not that dangerous, but a blocked front wheel will almost inevitably lead to a fall. My advice: Before the front wheel blocks, it makes a distinct grinding noise. Open the brake immediately then.

3. LETTING OFF As soon as you have reduced your speed suffciently, you can let off the brakes. The braking process should be completed before

4

reaching a bend.

4. BODY POSTURE Keep the body posture in the bend frst, then get back into the basic position. The aim is not to brake in the bend. Should it become necessary to do so, please only use the brakes very cautiously. Emergency braking should only be done with the rear wheel brake. This braking technique reduces your speed signifcantly

and gets you through the bend safely and fast! For those of you who need more pictures to get inspired, you will fnd this technique as a video on our website:

Offers everything a biker’s heart could wish for. The best basic equipment you can possibly buy. Quality is just as good. At this price you can really call it a must-buy and recommend it to others.

by Richard W. (written on 18.08.2013) Super set for beginners, containing the most useful tools. There’s still enough room to put more tools into this tool box neatly.

by Oliver L. (written on 11.10.2013)

I hardly missed anything in this tool box so far. Although I think a chain wear indicator really should be included. Of course you can simply order one with it. The tool box leaves ample space for e.g. a suspen-

by Joachim S. (written on 07.04.2014)

There are surely higher quality tools available, but for this price it’s simply unbeatable.

by Timo E. (written on 27.01.2011) Good box including the most important tools. Everything fnds its place in it and there’s still space to store more accessories. A list of contents with pictures would be helpful. This would explain what a specifc tool is used for.

by Helmut M. (written on 16.12.2013) Great value for money, offers everything you need, good quality and enough space for additional accessories.

by Björn B. (written on 21.12.2012)

Beautiful torture. If you have enough air to enjoy the view, you’ll be rewarded with a picturesque Alpine panorama.

Almost simultaneously, we get out of the saddle. At this point of the mountain you just have to ride out of the saddle.

“22,3 %” is written there in bold letters. “Come on!” I rather cheer on myself than on Dirk. Almost simultaneously, we get out of the saddle. At this point of the mountain you just have to ride out of the saddle. Strangely enough, this sign is rather motivating than demoralising. This section is the reason why we are here. We dig our fngers into the handlebar tape and grit our teeth. The display of my bike computer shows almost 400 watts that lie on my cranks. If you are not careful, you’ll soon start to build up acid. This steepest section of the Horn is 50 metres long and directly followed by another 50 metres with a gradient of 19%. Those who fght their way through this part of the course, have almost reached the fnish. On the last 750 metres, the slopes leading to the alpine house have a “relaxing” gradient of 12%.

THE BIRTH OF THE ROSE X-LITE TEAM _

A BIKE IS BORN

The new X-LITE TEAM – a top racer for the Champions League with brand-new carbon fork.

TEXT // PAUL WELLER PICTURE // ROSE

IN THE BEGINNING, THERE’S AN IDEA – IN THE END THERE’S A COMPLETE BIKE IN THE SHOP. BUT WHAT HAPPENS IN BETWEEN? WHICH DECISIONS ARE TAKEN, HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE INVOLVED, HOW MUCH SWEAT AND WORK IS PUT INTO SUCH A NEW BIKE? WE HAVE ASKED SOMEONE WHO OUGHT TO KNOW: JÜRGEN TELAHR. HE HAS BEEN IN CHARGE OF BIKE DEVELOPMENT AT ROSE TOGETHER WITH TWO OTHER ENGINEERS AND HAS MANAGED THE TECHNICAL DESIGN OF OUR ROAD AND TRIATHLON BIKES SINCE DECEMBER 2011. OUR THREE ENGINEERS ARE SUPPORTED BY A TEAM OF 10 EMPLOYEES OF THE R&D, THE RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT. IN THE FOLLOWING INTERVIEW, JÜRGEN PROVIDES AN INSIGHT INTO HIS WORK AND THE DEVELOPMENT PROCESS OF THE NEW ROAD BIKE ROSE X-LITE TEAM. HE’LL ALSO POINT OUT THE ADVANTAGES COMPARED TO THE BIKE’S PREDECESSOR.

MILESTONES!

ERWIN ROSE ABOUT THE HISTORY OF ROSE.

WHEN ROSE OPENED AS THE SMALLEST BICYCLE SHOP IN BOCHOLT IN 1907, THE FOUNDATION STONE WAS LAID. STONE BY STONE FOLLOWED, SOME OF THEM WERE CRUMBLING, MANY OF THEM STABLE AND SOME OF THEM WERE – MILESTONES. A MILESTONE – IT DESCRIBES AN IMPORTANT POINT IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF SOMETHING THAT SHOWS IF IT IS SUCCESSFUL OR NOT. THE MOMENT WHEN THE PATH FORKS AND YOU ARE MAKING THE RIGHT TURN. IT IS IN THE NATURE OF MILESTONES THAT YOU ONLY REALISE THEM IN RETROSPECT. ERWIN ROSE PRESENTS US THIS RETROSPECTIVE VIEW. NOBODY KNOWS THE ROSE MILESTONES BETTER THAN THE COMPANY FOUNDER AND GENERAL MANAGER. AND WHAT WOULD ROSE BE TODAY WITHOUT THE HUGE RANGE OF OWN BIKES INCLUDING ROAD BIKES, MOUNTAIN BIKES, FITNESS OR TREKKING BIKES.
