Martha Bear is a story based on the principles of therapeutic storytelling. It uses metaphors and imagery. The main characters are two bears – mother and daughter. The little bear behaves like a little child. She is easily distracted, and instead of doing what is important for little bears to do, she only wants to play and wander around. Children between two and five can easily identify with her. At the end of the day, tired from all her activities in the woods and meadow, the little bear goes with her mother into their den, the safest place in the world. Both illustrations and text are gentle and soothing, creating a calm atmosphere, with scenes and images repeating throughout, but from different angles and at different times of the day. This is a picture book that will be loved by children as well as their parents. At the end of the picture book there is a pictorial dictionary of local species of butterflies and animals mentioned in the picture book. Valentina Supanz was born in Zagreb in 1986. She graduated in 2012 from the Academy of Fine Arts, Department of Painting. She has exhibited in numerous exhibitions in Croatia, and in New York. This is her first picture book. Erika Katačić Kožić has been writing poetry and short stories since a young age. She received numerous awards during her school years in the USA. Today Erika is a chemist, and in her free time she is a storyteller, translates literature to English and enjoys writing stories for children. Her story about a fussy little elephant has been published in Susan Perrow’s book Therapeutic Storytelling – 101 Therapeutic Stories for Children by Hawthorn Press in 2012 in the UK.

Bears were sleeping in the den, and from the ceiling hung bats. It was not the kind of winter forest animals are accustomed to. There was no snow and it wasn’t cold. Animals began to squirm and wake up. The badgers went out, and yet the wild ducks didn’t fly away. This is a humorous story. It talks of a mild winter that has disrupted the hibernation of forest animals. Verses that interrupt the text paraphrase famous nursery rhymes. The North-Wind Boy and the Travelling Duck is another story that brings the atmosphere in the woods, and can also be considered a therapeutic story.
