OUR STRATEGY IN ACTION 2019
A gift to Ibis supports our work to drive change through bold, rigorous research and principled partnerships that advance sexual and reproductive autonomy, choices, and health worldwide.
IBIS REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH drives change through bold, rigorous research and principled partnerships that advance sexual and reproductive autonomy, choices, and health worldwide. Our priorities are designed to move us closer to our vision of a world where human rights and reproductive justice are centered in all policies and services, and where every person is free and able to make the best choices for themselves, their families, and their communities. This past year, we made important progress in each of our three strategic focus areas and worked to embed justice and equity more deeply into our organization and work, described in further detail below. Our research and partnerships shape policy, inform advances in service delivery and quality, and inspire creative innovations that enable each of us to live a pleasurable, safe, and healthy sexual and reproductive life.
Ensure ALL PEOPLE have the right and ability to access SAFE, AFFORDABLE, QUALITY abortion care Through the Later Abortion Initiative, we filled evidence gaps about abortion after 12 weeks gestation and documented the importance of client-centered abortion care throughout pregnancy. Our fact sheets provided vital resources for legislators, advocates, clinicians, researchers, and others seeking information or care that reflects the best evidence there is.
In South Africa, we laid the groundwork for a nationwide study on abortion and other sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services. We hope this work will inform impactful interventions to make the groundbreaking Choice on Termination of Pregnancy Act a reality for all people who need care. As one of three organizations leading the Abortion Service Quality Initiative, we are working to develop, validate, and disseminate indicators to measure abortion service quality both in and out of facility settings. These indicators will help to center the experiences of people having abortions and ensure that abortion care is accessible and high quality, regardless of setting.
TRANSFORM ACCESS to abortion and contraception through bold SERVICEDELIVERY and TECHNOLOGY INNOVATIONS
We expanded our work on innovative strategies to break down barriers to birth control access, including addressing youth perspectives on pharmacist provision of birth control, assessing online prescribing platforms, and advancing the work to move a birth control pill over the counter in the United States. Our formative research informed the development of Euki, a comprehensive SRH app that offers accurate, unbiased information about sexuality, abortion, contraception, STIs, and more, as well as tools for users to track what is going on with their bodies, while protecting their private data. To make abortion information and care easier to access, we examined the effectiveness of telehealth models for medication abortion in the United States, and documented women’s experiences with abortion counseling in Mexico City and Colombia.
EXPAND ACCESS to comprehensive sexual and reproductive health INFORMATION and SERVICES
Our mmoho campaign provided young people in South Africa with a place to discuss and unpack the results of the ECHO Study, which examined HIV risk among women using different contraceptive methods. We strive to create opportunities for young people to get information and engage with research results in ways that center their insights and prioritize their SRH and rights. We explored SRH experiences of transgender, nonbinary, and gender-expansive individuals in the United States through a multi-phase national project, aimed at identifying rights- and evidence-based recommendations for creating higher-quality, gender-affirming, accessible care for all. We furthered our work on the current state of comprehensive sexuality education (CSE) in South Africa. This research will identify gaps and drive improvements in CSE so that all young people have access to youth-friendly, understandable information that is grounded in evidence and the human right to SRH and autonomy.
A KEY COMPONENT OF OUR STRATEGIC VISION is to further prioritize and
integrate justice and equity throughout our work and our organizational policies, practices, and culture. Our Commitment to Justice and Equity articulates how we seek to embed these principles to advance our mission, produce powerful evidence, conduct research in a way that shifts power, and leverage lasting change.
