International Relations & Politics 2018 CONTENTS

Message from the Editors: Welcome to our 2018 catalogue for Politics and International Relations. Since we last wrote a year ago, the world has seen significant and unexpected changes – the Brexit vote in the UK and the election of Donald Trump in the US – which make an understanding of the contemporary global challenges all the more important. As ever, I.B.Tauris is at the cutting-edge of current affairs and this catalogue features Brexit, No Exit, by Denis MacShane (p.4) arguing that Britain won’t, after all, completely leave Europe and Donald Trump: The Making of a World Order by Brendan Simms and Charlie Laderman (p.5), which puts the new president’s foreign policy priorities into long-term perspective. The new threats facing the world are covered in The Rage by Julia Ebner (p.3), which looks at the spiralling rhetoric of hate and violence from Islamist and Far Right groups, and Drones and Terrorism by Nicholas Grossman (p.7), which focuses on the new methods of modern warfare. Our East Asia list continues to flourish and we are particularly pleased to highlight China’s World by Kerry Brown (p.27), a complete study of China’s foreign policy, alongside Chasing the Chinese Dream by Nick Holdstock (p.27) which focuses on the hopes and fears of the people who live there. Finally we are delighted to announce two new series, one focusing on the world of Arctic Studies (p.31), and one showcasing the latest in Terrorism and Extremism Research (p.7).

In this important book, Nikolaos van Dam, explains the recent history of Syria, covering the growing disenchantment with the Asad regime, the chaos of civil war and the fractures which led to an immense amount of destruction in the refined social fabric of what used to be the Syrian nation. He traces political developments within the Asad regime and the various opposition groups from the Arab Spring to the present day, and provides a deeper insight into the conflict and the possibilities and obstacles for reaching a political solution.

WARSAW PACT INTERVENTION IN THE THIRD WORLD NEW

Fazel Hawramy

Aid and Influence in the Cold War Philip Muehlenbeck and Natalia Telepneva (Eds)

In the year since Islamic State tore through Iraq and proclaimed a caliphate straddling the border with Syria, the Kurds have emerged as a lead actor in the global war against the extremist group and an important partner in the campaign to “degrade and destroy” it. However, the story of the Kurdish fighters known as Peshmerga - literally “those who confront death” - is yet to be told. This book seeks to establish who these men are, and what has motivated them to lay down their lives in one abortive revolt after another over the past century. It will trace the peshmerga’s ongoing and far from complete evolution from a rag-tag guerrilla force into a regular army. From their early beginnings in the short-lived Kurdish Republic of Mahabad to the current standoff with Islamic State, the peshmerga have come to embody the Kurdish nationalist struggle in Iraq and beyond.

Building upon recent scholarship and working from a diverse range of new archival sources, scholars uncover the reasons behind the Warsaw Pact’s policy in Africa, Asia, the Middle East and Latin America from the 1950s to the 1970s.

U.S. APPROACHES TO THE ARAB UPRISINGS International Relations and Democracy Promotion NEW Amentahru Wahlrab and Michael J. McNeal (Eds) University of Texas

The early twenty-first century has been defined by a rise in Islamist radicalisation and a concurrent rise in far right extremism. This book explores the interaction between the ‘new’ far right and Islamist extremists and considers the consequences for the global terror threat. Julia Ebner argues that far right and Islamist extremist narratives – ‘The West is at war with Islam’ and ‘Muslims are at war with the West’ – complement each other perfectly, making the two extremes rhetorical allies and building a spiralling torrent of hatred – ‘The Rage’. Based on firsthand interviews, this book introduces readers to the world of reciprocal radicalisation and the hotbeds of extremism that have developed – with potentially disastrous consequences – in the UK, Europe and the US. 272 PAGES 198 X 129MM SEPTEMBER 2017 9781788310321 PAPERBACK £11.99 / $18.00 e ebook available

Fear and Security in the Digital Age Laura Toogood

The New Putney Debates

Denis Galligan (Ed) University of Oxford The debates that began at St Mary’s Church, Putney on 28 October 1647 pioneered the liberal, democratic settlement in England: a written constitution, universal suffrage, freedom of conscience and equality before the law. Four centuries later, the 2016 Brexit referendum raised fundamental questions concerning the constitution of the UK. The parallels between 1647 and 2017 are striking. Government has been toppled, a new leadership has emerged, and the two main parties are in a state of internecine warfare. This volume brings together some of the greatest public intellectuals of their generation to debate the constitutional crisis at the heart of today’s politics.

WHY COLD WAR AGAIN?

NEW

How America Lost Post-Soviet Russia Stephen F. Cohen, New York University

The new East-West conflict, which broke out over the Ukrainian crisis in 2014, and spread through Europe and to the Middle East, is potentially the worst US-Russian confrontation in more than fifty years — and the most fateful. A negotiated resolution is possible, but time may be running out. In this book, renowned Russia scholar Stephen F. Cohen traces the history of this East-West relationship in the years from the purported end of the Cold War, in 1990-1991, to what he has long argued would be a new and even more dangerous Cold War. Cohen’s historical and contemporary analysis is insightful, thought-provoking and essential reading.

The UK’s Brexit vote in 2016 and the inconclusive general election just 12 months later have unleashed a wave of chaos and uncertainty – on the eve of formal negotiations with the EU. Denis MacShane argues that Brexit will not mean full rupture with Europe and that British business will overcome the rightwing forces of the Conservative back-benches and UKIP.

ANCIENT GREECE AND AMERICAN CONSERVATISM NEW

Classical Influence on the Modern Right John Bloxham University of Nottingham

US conservatives have repeatedly turned to classical Greece for inspiration and rhetorical power. In the 1950s they used Plato to defend moral absolutism and in the 1960s it was Aristotle as a means to develop a uniquely conservative social science. By tracing this phenomenon and analysing examples of selectivity, subversion and adaptation within their broader social and political contexts, John Bloxham here employs classical thought as a prism through which to explore competing strands in American conservatism. 288 PAGES 216 X 138MM APRIL 2018 9781788311540 HARDBACK £64.00 / $99.00 LIBRARY OF CLASSICAL STUDIES e ebook available

DONALD TRUMP

NEW

The Making of a World View

Charlie Laderman, King’s College London and Brendan Simms, University of Cambridge On November 8, 2016, Donald Trump won the American presidential election, to the surprise of many who have been left wondering what this will mean for the world. It has been claimed that Trump’s foreign policy views are impulsive, inconsistent and were improvised on the campaign trail. However, drawing on interviews from as far back as 1980, Charlie Laderman and Brendan Simms show that this assumption is dangerously false. Over the past three decades, Trump has been laying out in interviews, articles, books and tweets what amounts to a foreign policy philosophy. This book reveals the world view that Trump brings to the Oval Office, how it was formed, what might result if it is applied in policy terms and the potential consequences for the rest of the world. 192 PAGES 198 X 129MM JUNE 2017 9781788310482 PAPERBACK £6.99 / $8.95 e ebook available

DRONES AND TERRORISM

NEW

Asymmetrical Warfare and the Threat to Security Nicholas Grossman University of Illinois

In warzones, ordinary commercially available drones are used for reconnaissance and information gathering. They can also be used for bombings – a drone carrying an explosive charge is potentially a powerful weapon. At the same time asymmetric warfare has become the norm – with large states increasingly fighting marginal terrorist groups. Here, Nicholas Grossman shows how we are entering the age of the drone terrorist – groups such as Hezbollah are already using them in the Middle East. Grossman analyses the ways in which the US, Israel and other advanced militaries use aerial drones and ground-based robots to fight non-state actors and how these groups, as well as individual terrorists, are utilizing less advanced commercially-available drones to fight powerful state opponent 272 PAGES 216 X 138MM DECEMBER 2017 9781784538309 HARDBACK £20.00 / $35.00 e ebook available

As black South Africans were reduced to non-citizens, increasing numbers of exiles were finding refuge in Britain. National University of Ireland, Maynooth

The rise of divisive and far-right politics and growing Islamophobia in Britain poses new challenges for Muslim advocacy organisations. In the last fifty years, Muslim identity politics has worked to preserve religious identity, lobby the state and offer concerted responses to the political establishment. This is the first book to critically chart the national and global factors influencing the political mobilisation of British Muslim activists as Muslims. From analysing the establishment of regional organisations after 1960, Khadijah Elshayyal traces the changes of thought, direction and method for Muslim identity politics.

LLOYD GEORGE

NEW

Statesman or Scoundrel Richard Wilkinson David Lloyd George left a profound political legacy, despite being described by his successor Herbert Asquith’s wife as a ‘gambler without foresight’. He is best known as the Prime Minister who led Britain to victory in World War I, but his contribution to domestic politics was similarly impressive. As Chancellor of the Exchequer he introduced pensions and national insurance against sickness and unemployment, while as Prime Minister he extended democracy by giving votes to women.Yet Lloyd George was vain, cruel, capricious and dishonest, and at times his notoriously corrupt nature threatened to damage the British political system. 304 PAGES 216 X 135MM SEPTEMBER 2017 9781780763897 HARDBACK £25.00 / $45.00 e ebook available

Culture, Modernity and the Soviet Threat Nicholas Barnett Liverpool John Moores University

The Communist Party in Britain Between the Wars Matthew Worley

The cultural history of the Cold War has been characterised as an explosion of fear and paranoia, based on very little actual intelligence. So much of the cultural output of the period– in television, film, and literature – was concerned with the end of the world. Here, Nicholas Barnett looks at art and design, opinion polls, the Mass Observation movement, popular fiction and newspapers to show how exactly British people felt about the Soviet Union and the Cold War and how this seeped in to the art, literature, music and design of the period. 304 PAGES 216 X 138MM MARCH 2018 9781784538057 HARDBACK £62.00 / $99.00 INTERNATIONAL LIBRARY OF TWENTIETH CENTURY HISTORY e ebook available

Bernard Donoughue

10

As New Labour’s first period of government picks up steam, we find Bernard Donoughue working as a minister at the Ministry of Agriculture, Fishing and Food. In this, the second volume of Donoughue’s House of Lords diaries, he chronicles his experiences – often frustrating, often hilarious – serving in the early years of Blair’s government, as he attempts to modernise MAFF by expanding its interests more broadly in rural affairs. It outlines Donoughue’s role in the EU’s agricultural policy, including as the UK minister at the Agriculture Council as well as his unofficial role in the lead-up to the Good Friday agreement. As with all Donoughue’s diaries, the book sheds a spotlight on the daily trials and tribulations of life in Westminster, told with trademark waspish wit, insight and humour. 384 PAGES 226 X 155MM OCTOBER 2017 9781784539467 HARDBACK £25.00 / $40.00 e ebook available

In the last decade, the EU has been hit by a series of crises, most recently the UK’s decision to leave the union following the Brexit vote. In light of this, questions have been raised about the need to reform the whole model of European integration, with the aim of making the union more flexible and more accountable. In this book, Richard Youngs proposes an alternative vision of European co-operation and shows how the EU must re-invent itself if it is to survive. He argues that citizens should play a greater role in European decision-making, and that Europe needs to take a new, more coherent, approach to questions of defence and security. In proposing this model for a ‘reset’ version of Europe, Youngs reinvigorates the debate around the future of Europe and puts forward a new agenda for the future of the EU. 240 PAGES 198 X 129MM OCTOBER 2017 9781788310574 PAPERBACK £11.99 / $28.00 e ebook available

Since 2010, Greece has experienced the longest period of austerity in its recent history. While there is no shortage of accounts of Greece’s economic crisis, the cultural impact of austerity has yet to be properly addressed. This book analyses hitherto uncharted cultural aspects of the Greek economic crisis by exploring the connections between austerity and culture as well as manifestations of how the crisis has led Greeks to rethink or question cultural discourses and conceptions of identity. 304 PAGES 216 X 138MM JULY 2017 9781784538453 HARDBACK £64.00 / $99.00 INTERNATIONAL LIBRARY OF HISTORICAL STUDIES e ebook available

How can a region seemingly slip in and out of existence? How can it mean so many different things? The idea of Central Europe has played an important role in international geopolitics yet it has always been elusive. Otilia Dhand provides a critical examination of the concept, from its early inception to the present day. Drawing upon new archival material, much of which has been previously unavailable in English, this outstanding work advances our understanding of both regionalism and the political geography of Central Europe. 304 PAGES 234 X 156MM DECEMBER 2017 9781784538538 HARDBACK £58.00 / $94.00 TAURIS HISTORICAL GEOGRAPHY SERIES e ebook available

POLITICAL CHANGE IN ALBANIA The Student Movement and the End of Communism NEW Shinasi Rama (Ed)

The student movement played a critical role in the political transformation of Albania in 1990-1991. This book examines the origins of the movement, its ideology, values, and its relationship to the state and ruling caste. The contributors show that the student movement was an independent player that managed to change the political system of Albania at a critical juncture during the collapse of the communist People’s Republic and the declaration of the Fourth Republic.

The 1943 battle to free the Soviet Black Sea port of Novorossiisk from German occupation was fought from the beach head of Malaia zemlia, where the young Colonel Leonid Brezhnev saw action. Despite widespread scepticism, its heroes are still commemorated in Novorossiisk today. Through the prism of this Russian town,Vicky Davis sheds light on the character of Brezhnev perceived by his people, and on the process of memory for ordinary Russian citizens.

Roh’s account, the first comprehensive study of the ‘Varga Institute’, sheds new light onto the controversial relationship between the creation of Soviet foreign policy, academia and the party.

Eid Mohamed University of Guelph When Barack Obama was elected in 2008, his foreign policy was at first seen to be the antithesis of that of his predecessor, George W. Bush. Eid Mohamed highlights how in the wake of this change of US administration, Arab media, literature and cinema began to assert the value of America as a potential source of ‘change’ while attempting to renegotiate the Arab world’s position in the international system. Taking this into account, Mohamed offers an examination of the ways in which stereotypes of America are both presented and challenged through cinema, fiction and the wider media and intellectual production. 232 PAGES 216 X 138MM OCTOBER 2017 9781788310475 PAPERBACK £20.00 / $30.00 e ebook available

Censorship pervades all aspects of political, social and cultural life in the Islamic Republic of Iran. Faced with strict state control of cultural output, Iranian authors and writers have had to adapt their work to avoid falling foul of the censors. From Ancient Times to the Islamic Republic

Iran is rarely out of the media spotlight. Whether because of its nuclear ambitions, its confrontation with the US or the provocative rhetoric of its leadership, Iran demands attention. In this riveting book, William Beeman pries open the complex and multifaceted society that makes up Iran. Sweeping through its history, Beeman seeks to show how Iranian identity has been forged. Though Iran has been profoundly influenced by the experience of many invasions, its identity is firmly anchored in its deeply subtle literary and artistic heritage producing the most ethnically diverse yet culturally united country in the Middle East. This poetic ambiguity is felt in every aspect of Iranian social and political life today. 224 PAGES 216 X 138MM JUNE 2018 9781845119690 PAPERBACK £9.99 / $15.95 e ebook available

Politics and Protest in the Age of ‘Post-Truth’ Julian de Medeiros University of Kent NEW

From the Gezi protests to the attempted military coup, the concept of ‘post-truth’ plays a significant role in Turkish politics today. Examining the relationship between conspiracy theory and ‘post-truth’, this book sheds light on the strategies of political paranoia threatening to undermine the success of Turkey’s democratic model. As Turkish democracy continues to evolve with unpredictable outcomes, de Medeiros shows how the rise of paranoid politics constitutes part of a global trend towards post-truth narratives. He situates Turkish democracy as subject to a global resurgence of strongman leadership and antagonistic populism. 320 PAGES 216 X 138MM DECEMBER 2017 9781788311670 HARDBACK £59.00 / $95.00 LIBRARY OF MODERN TURKEY e ebook available

THE PASSION

Football and the History of Modern Turkey NEW Patrick Keddie

Ezgi Basaran St Antony’s College Oxford

Turkey is on the front line of the war which is consuming Syria and the Middle East. Its role is complicated by the long-running conflict with the Kurds on their Syrian border – a war that has killed as many as 80,000 people over the last three decades. In its fight against ISIS, Turkey has declared war on western allies such as the Kurdish YPG – the military who rescued the Yezidis and fought with US backing in Kobane. Frontline Turkey shows how the Kurds’ relationship with Turkey is at the very heart of the Middle Eastern crisis, and documents, through front-line reporting, how Erdogan’s failure to bring peace is the key to understanding current events in Middle East. 224 PAGES 216 X 135MM SEPTEMBER 2017 9781784538415 HARDBACK £17.99 / $25.00 e ebook available

INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS AND POLITICS 2018

Football in Turkey is a sport that encompasses politics, anger and resistance. Patrick Keddie takes us on a wild journey from the streets of Istanbul to the deserts of Anatolia. He meets gay referees facing death threats and Kurdish teams playing for their human rights. In doing so he lifts the lid on a new side to the story of modern Turkey. He also tells the stories of the scandalous ‘fixing’ of the Turkish first division, and sketches murky connections to the country’s leadership. 320 PAGES 216 X 135MM MARCH 2018 9781784538026 HARDBACK £16.99 / $28.00 e ebook available

STATELESS IN THE GULF NEW

Migration, Nationality and Society in Kuwait Claire Beaugrand Institut Francais du Proche Orient, Beirut

State, Citizens and Institutions NEW Mark C. Thompson, King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals; and Neil Quilliam, Chatham House (Eds) The GCC is a major player in the post-2011 reordering of the Middle East. Despite the rise in prominence of individual Gulf states – especially Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates and the growth of the GCC as a collective entity, surprisingly little attention has been paid to the actual mechanics of policy-making in the region. This book analyses the vital role that institutions are coming to play in shaping policy in the Gulf Arab states and shows how institutions are responding to citizens’ demands for better services and further empowerment.

The stateless (bidun) of Kuwait represent around 10 per cent of Kuwaiti nationals – approximately 100,000 people. In 1986 the biduns were classified as ‘illegal migrants’. As such, they were gradually deprived of all their rights: from access to the job market, health and education to the issuing of birth, marriage or death certificates.

ARTS AND THE UPRISING IN EGYPT NEW The Making of a Culture of Dissent?

Samia Mehrez and Mona Abaza (Eds) American University in Cairo The January 2011 Egyptian uprising had dramatic, far-reaching effects on cultural production in Egypt. It sparked new developments and transformations in content and genre and laid open challenge to the powerful role traditionally played by the country’s ministry of culture in the field of artistic expression. This book offers a timely and much-needed survey of key realms of cultural production in Egypt since January 2011.They show how this explosion of cultural expression aligned with the change in people’s relationship to power and authority that took place after the uprising and yet how this cultural resurgence had its roots in political struggles that predated 2011. 352 PAGES 230 X 150MM AUGUST 2017 9789774167584 PAPERBACK £19.95 / THE AMERICAN UNIVERSITY IN CAIRO PRESS e ebook available

The Modern History of Syria 24

James Reilly University of Toronto

The Syrian state is less than 100 years old, but today it stands in ruins, shattered by brutal civil war. How did this happen? By charting Syria’s history over the last five centuries for the first time, James Reilly explores the fractious yet formative periods of Ottoman, Egyptian and French rule, and the ways that these contributed to the rule of the Assad family; and to a civil war which produced the so-called Islamic State. Based on primary sources and recent historiography in English, French and Arabic, this is the essential book for understanding modern Syria and the Middle East. 312 PAGES 226 X 155MM SEPTEMBER 2018 9781784539610 HARDBACK £25.00 / $35.00 e ebook available

TERRORISM IN PAKISTAN The Tehreek-eTaliban Pakistan (TTP) and the Challenge to Security NEW N. Elahi University of the Punjab

Since the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979, Pakistan has faced the threat of terrorism in different forms and shapes. Yet in recent years the threat has taken on a new dimension. After 9/11 the US campaign against Osama bin Laden, al-Qaeda and the Taliban in Afghanistan led to a surge in unrest and violence in Pakistan. Pakistan’s nascent democratic set-up, in the form of the government of Nawaz Sharif, is struggling to curb this menace. This is the first book to cover all aspects of terrorism in Pakistan and to reveal the composition, ideology, approaches and strengths of TTP and its affiliates. 304 PAGES 216 X 138MM DECEMBER 2017 9781784539993 HARDBACK £64.00 / $99.00 INTERNATIONAL LIBRARY OF TWENTIETH CENTURY HISTORY e ebook available

Allan R. Millett argues that the Korean War stemmed from two key historic events: the communist revolution in China, and the successful reform of postwar Japan. Korea became a strategic frontier between two great Asian rivals: a rivalry that endures. A Modern History Michael D Barr Flinders University

Singapore gained independence in 1965, a city-state in a world of nation-states.Yet its long and complex history reaches much farther back. Blending modernity and tradition, ideologies and ethnicities, a peculiar set of factors make Singapore what it is today. In this thematic study of the island nation, Michael D Barr proposes a new approach to understand this development. From the pre-colonial period through to the modern day, he traces the idea, the politics and the geography of Singapore over five centuries of rich history. In doing so he rejects the official narrative of the so-called ‘Singapore Story’. Drawing on in-depth archival work and oral histories, Singapore: A Modern History is a work both for students of the country’s history and politics, but also for any reader seeking to engage with this enigmatic and vastly successful nation. 312 PAGES 226 X 155MM JUNE 2018 9781780763057 HARDBACK £25.00 / $40.00 e ebook available

POST-CONFLICT SECURITY IN SOUTH SUDAN NEW From Liberal Peacebuilding to Demilitarisation

Nyambura Wambugu University of Juba, South Sudan Just eight years after the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) and two years after gaining independence, the world’s newest nation state descended once more into violence and civil war. Why have policies of liberal peacebuilding failed to bring lasting stability to the region? And what now for South Sudan? Wambugu considers the complex and overlapping issues that have afflicted the region and demonstrates the failure of the billions of dollars spent on liberal peacebuilding. She also elucidates the possibility of demilitarisation as a lasting and sustainable alternative path to peace for post-conflict states. 320 PAGES 216 X 138MM MARCH 2018 9781784536947 HARDBACK £62.00 / $99.00 INTERNATIONAL LIBRARY OF AFRICAN STUDIES e ebook available

The Managed Retreat of Coastal Areas Stuart Oliver NEW

T. Tvedt, University of Bergen, T. Oestigaard, University of Bergen, O. McIntyre & T. Kasse Woldesadik (Eds) Vol. 1: Water and Urbanization

Coastal management has been greatly influenced by the rise of environmentalism, with its emphasis on the preservation of natural processes and restoration of habitats. Environmental change has made the subject especially topical and today managed retreat is seen as a plausible strategy of coastal management, if a controversial one by some. Here, Stuart Oliver traces the emergence of the concept showing how it is a manifestation of our changing perceptions of nature and how it challenges our traditional ideas of borders and margins.

Fragmentation and Conflict in the Middle East Nabil Dajani American University of Beirut

REPORTING GENOCIDE Media, Mass Violence and Human Rights NEW

David Patrick University of the Free State, South Africa

Lebanese society is famously, and even notoriously, fragmented, along both class and sectarian lines. Here, Nabil Dajani looks at how this societal division impacts on the nature of the mass media in Lebanon. 288 PAGES 216 X 138MM FEBRUARY 2018 9781780765419 HARDBACK £69.00 / $110.00 LIBRARY OF MODERN MIDDLE EAST STUDIES e ebook available

The Western world’s responses to genocide have been slow, unwieldly and sometimes unfit for purpose. So argues David Patrick in this essential new contribution to the aid and intervention debate. While the UK and US have historically been committed to the ideals of human rights, freedom and equality, their actual material reactions are more usually dictated by geopolitical ‘noise’, pre-conceived ideas of worth and the media attentionspans of individual elected leaders. Utilizing a wide-ranging quantitative analysis of media reporting across the globe, Patrick argues that an over-reliance on the Holocaust as the framing device we use to try and come to terms with such horrors can lead to slow responses and misinterpretations. 288 PAGES 216 X 138MM OCTOBER 2017 9781784537227 HARDBACK £62.00 / $99.00 INTERNATIONAL LIBRARY OF CULTURAL STUDIES e ebook available

MIGRATION FROM TURKEY TO SWEDEN

NEW

Integration, Belonging and Transnational Community Bahar Baser & Paul Levin (Eds)

Fatma Müge Göçek (Ed) University of Michigan The most significant political development of the post-Cold War era was, arguably, the diffusion of neoliberalism across the globe. This book now examines the emergence and consequences of neoliberalism in Turkey. The contributors look beyond the neoliberal cities of Istanbul and Ankara to take into account the rest of the country and the groups that are most negatively affected: such as the Kurds, women and migrants. Contested Spaces in Contemporary Turkey sheds new light on the societal processes that are re-shaping modern Turkey.

The ‘refugee crisis’ and rise of anti-immigration parties across Europe has prompted widespread debates. This book explores how the patterns of labour migration and interactions of Turkish migrants with Swedish society impacted the social and political attitudes of these different communities.

Based on extensive fieldwork, Wim Peumans examines how queer Muslims negotiate silence and disclosure around their sexuality, maintain transcultural relationships and understand their religious beliefs. The book reveals the interrelated issues involved in migration, sexuality and religion and challenges the existing heteronormativity of Migration Studies. In focusing on people with different migration histories and ethnic backgrounds, this book provides a much-needed, more nuanced perspective. 288 PAGES 216 X 138MM OCTOBER 2017 9781788310789 HARDBACK £64.00 / $99.00 e ebook available

Ownership, Coercion and Agency in Muslim Societies and Beyond Ruba Salih, SOAS, University of London; and Andrea Cornwall, University of Sussex; (Eds)

Technology and Patriarchy in Egypt and Saudi Arabia Chiara Livia Bernadi

The debate on whether the marketing of sex constitutes a form of violence and control over women, or whether it can be seen as an ‘empowering’ form of work or pleasure is a vibrant and often impassioned one. This book argues the dichotomy of ‘freedom of choice vs coercion’ is one that has not been challenged and seeks to expand the horizon of the debates concerning body power, agency and coercion.

Borders – whether settled or contested, violent or calm, closed or open – may have a direct, and often acute, human impact. At the border, vulnerable refugee and migrant communities, especially women, are exposed to state-centred boundary practices, paving the way for both their alienation and exploitation. The militarization of borders subjugates the very position of women in these marginalized areas and often subjects them to further victimization. This book locates gender and violence along geographical edges and critically examines the gendered experiences of women as global border residents and border crossers. 256 PAGES 216 X 138MM AUGUST 2017 9781784539573 HARDBACK £69.00 / $110.00 INTERNATIONAL LIBRARY OF MIGRATION STUDIES e ebook available

MODERN ART AT THE BERLIN WALL

Demarcating Culture in the Cold War Germanys NEW IN PAPERBACK

Claudia Mesch

Zeena Feldman (Ed) City University London In an era of unprecedented global mobility, artists face unique challenges. How does cultural context affect the interpretation of art? What makes artists’ work transnational or national in character, and how will their visibility be impacted by either label? Art and the Politics of Visibility questions these dynamics, asking how the dissemination of visual culture on a global scale affects art and its institutions. Taking Shanghai-based artist Yang Fudong’s practice as a point of departure, this volume focuses on how politically charged images produced in contemporary art, cinema, news media and fashion become widely consumed or marginalised. 288 PAGES 216 X 138MM SEPTEMBER 2017 9781780769066 HARDBACK £59.00 / $95.00 INT.
