International Relations & Politics 2017 CONTENTS
Message from the Editors: Welcome to our 2017 catalogue for Politics and International Relations. As ever, our publishing covers all aspects of current world affairs – from China to the Mediterranean, and from Africa to the Middle East and Central Asia. Whatever the outcome of the US election, we have books to shed light on current trends in American politics. Who is Hillary Clinton? (p.5), published with The Nation, provides myriad perspectives on Clinton’s campaign, whilst new biography Reagan (p.5) shows how much the Republican Party has changed over the past three decades. In light of recent events in Turkey, we will be releasing a number of timely and penetrating books – the first English-language biography of Erdogan (p.24) Kaya Genç’s widely reviewed Under the Shadow (p.22) and a fully revised and updated edition of Erik J. Zürcher’s classic work Turkey: A Modern History (p.23). The Islamic World remains a key area of focus for us with Radicalized (p.7), a new account of jihadist terrorism by Peter R. Neumann, and The Origins of ISIS (p.3) by Simon Mabon and Stephen Royle. Finally, as we expand our list of China publications we are thrilled to be publishing a new updated edition of Philip Short’s acclaimed biography Mao (p.30). A QUESTION OF WORTH
NEW
Economy, Society and the Quantification of Human Value Chris Steed, University of Southampton The outcome of the global economic crash of recent years has shown that it is people who have been under assault, not just financial value: erode the economic and you erode the personal. Drawing upon his experience in government, education and the church, the author questions whether our market economy must also mean a market society. He calls for a wider concept of value, one that encompasses both economic value and human worth. 256 PAGES 234 X 156 SEPTEMBER 2016 9781784535919 HARDBACK £64.00 / $99.00 e ebook available

UNMASKED Corruption in the West NEW
Laurence Cockcroft and Anne-Christine Wegener
How corrupt is the West? Europe and North America’s formal selfperception is one of high standards in public life. And yet, corruption is receiving ever greater attention in the European, American and Canadian press, with high-profile cases affecting both the corporate and political worlds. This book identifies the driving forces behind such cases, particularly the role of political finance, lobbying, the banking system and organised crime. It analyses the sectors which are particularly prone to corruption, including sport, defence and pharmaceuticals. In the course of their investigation, the authors consider why anti-corruption legislation has not been more effective and why there is an increasing discrepancy between regulation and commercial and cultural practice. Are Europe and the US genuinely serious about fighting corruption and if so what measures will be taken to roll it back? 288 PAGES 198 X 126MM NOVEMBER 2016 9781784536084 PAPERBACK £11.99 / $19.95 e ebook available

THE ORIGINS OF ISIS NEW
The Collapse of Nations and Revolution in the Middle East Simon Mabon and Stephen Royle Lancaster University
The rapid expansion of ISIS and its swathe of territorial gains across the Middle East have been headline news since 2013. Yet, as media attention and analysis focuses upon military exploits, brutal tactics and radicalisation methods, it is important to consider the historical and local dynamics that have shaped the emergence of the group in the past decade. In this book Simon Mabon and Stephen Royle provide the reader with a comprehensive overview of the roots, tactics and ideology of the group, exploring the interactions of the various participants involved in the formative stages of ISIS. Based on original scholarly sources and first-hand research in the region, this book provides an authoritative and closely analysed look at the emergence of one of the defining forces of the early twenty-first century. 256 PAGES 198 X 126MM NOVEMBER 2016 9781784536961 PAPERBACK £10.99 / $15.95 e ebook available
GENERATION M
3 NEW
Young Muslims Changing the World Shelina Janmohamed From the Ottoman Empire to the present day, this book demonstrates the gendered subtext of Turkish foreign policy – anxiety of a ‘non-Western’ Turkish masculinity subordinated to a ‘Western’ hegemonic masculinity – and shows how Turkey’s ‘subordination’ has in turn been internalised by its own politicians. 304 PAGES 216 X 134MM SEPTEMBER 2016 9781784533472 HARDBACK £69.00 / $110.00 LIBRARY OF MODERN TURKEY e ebook available

What does it mean to be young and Muslim today? Shelina Janmohamed investigates the growing cultural phenomenon of the tech-savvy and self-empowered ‘Generation M’. This dynamic section of our society is not only adapting to Western consumerism, but reclaiming it as its own. From the ‘Mipsters’ to the ‘Haloodies’, Halal internet dating to Muslim boy bands, Generation M are making their mark. It’s time to get hijabilicious! 352 PAGES 198 X 126MM AUGUST 2017 9781780769097 PAPERBACK £12.99 / $19.95 e ebook available
THE FOG OF PEACE
How to Prevent War NEW IN PAPERBACK Gabrielle Rifkind, Oxford Research Group Giandomenico Picco, United Nations
Why does the world today seem so chaotic, so violent, so frightening? How to Prevent War shows how successive military interventions over the last twenty years have failed to increase our security. Leading international negotiators demonstrate here that we must ‘reset’ our thinking about the Middle East, try to understand why ordinary human beings resort to war, and why military intervention so often exacerbates the worst aspects of human behaviour. This book asks us to understand the mind of the enemy.

POSITIVE IMAGES
Gay Men and HIV/AIDS in the Culture of ‘Post Crisis’ Dion Kagan, University of Melbourne
The Role of Religious and Moral Values in the Modern World Robin W Lovin
Since the advent of antiretroviral drugs, the connotations of HIV/AIDS have changed. But while these life saving drugs mean that gay men can have a potentially healthy, normal life, what do these changes mean for how they and HIV are presented in popular culture? Positive Images is the first examination of the portrayal of gay men and HIV in the media over the past two decades. Dion Kagan provides acute insights into the fraught legacy of the AIDS crisis and its continued impact upon the modern gay consciousness.

CONSTRUCTING A POST-WAR ORDER The Rise of US Hegemony and the Origins of the Cold War NEW IN PAPERBACK Andrew Baker
WHY COLD WAR AGAIN? How America Lost Post-Soviet Russia Stephen F. Cohen New York University
NEW
The new East-West conflict, which broke out over the Ukrainian crisis in 2014, but which long predated it and soon spread through Europe and to the Middle East, is potentially the worst US-Russian confrontation in more than fifty years — and the most fateful. A negotiated resolution is possible, but time may be running out. In this book, renowned Russia scholar and media commentator Stephen F. Cohen traces the history of this East-West relationship in the ‘Inter Cold War’ period — the years from the purported end of the preceding Cold War, in 1990-1991, to what he has long argued would be a new and even more dangerous Cold War. Cohen’s historical and contemporary analysis is insightful, thought-provoking and essential reading for anyone seeking to understand relations between the West and post-Soviet Russia. 224 PAGES 216X135MM FEBRUARY 2017 9781784536305 PAPERBACK £10.99 / $12.99 e ebook available
REAGAN

American Icon Iwan Morgan, University College London
Andrew Baker here examines the expansion of US political and economic power and hegemony in the years 1942 to 1946, and the extent to which smaller states, particularly Australia, New Zealand, Canada and South Africa, contested this expansion. 344 PAGES 216 X 134MM AUGUST 2017 9781784536855 PAPERBACK £25.00 / $45.00 e ebook available
SELLING RONALD REAGAN The Emergence of a President Gerard DeGroot 320 PAGES 216X135MM 2015 9781780768281 HARDBACK £20.00 / $28.00
Iwan Morgan shrewdly assesses Reagan’s considerable achievements whilst also highlighting the shortcomings that were an indisputable part of his record. This book plots a chronological path through Reagan’s life, offering a detailed evaluation of the pragmatic conservatism that was the hallmark of Reagan’s presidential leadership. Reagan became an American icon by articulating his country’s best values – even if he himself did not always live up to these. Today, as the Republican Party grapples with their new direction and identity, understanding the legacy of Ronald Reagan is more relevant than ever. 408 PAGES 226X155MM SEPTEMBER 2016 9781780767475 HARDBACK £20.00 / $29.95 e ebook available

TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY JIHAD NEW IN PAPERBACK
Law, Society and Military Action Elisabeth Kendall, University of Oxford; Ewan Stein, University of Edinburgh.
RADICALIZED New Jihadists and the Threat to the West NEW Peter R. Neumann King’s College London
The attacks in Paris in January and November 2015 heralded the beginning of a new wave of terrorism – one rooted in the ongoing conflict in Syria and Iraq. As ISIS seeks to expand its reach in the Middle East, its territory serves as a base for training and operations for a new generation of jihadis. Thousands of young people from the West, primarily from Europe, have travelled to join ISIS, re-emerging as hardened fighters with military training and a network of international contacts. Many have now returned to their homelands, where it is feared they are planning a new series of brutal attacks. Peter R. Neumann here explains the phenomenon of the ‘new jihadis’, and shows why the threat of terrorism in the West is greater than ever before. Based on interviews and previously-unseen material, Neumann provides an essential introduction to one of the greatest crises of our time. 256 PAGES 216X135MM SEPTEMBER 2016 9781784536732 PAPERBACK £11.99 / $17.95 e ebook available

LLOYD GEORGE
David Lloyd George was not only the Prime Minister who led Britain to victory in World War I, but also a powerful advocate for progressive domestic policy. Yet his legacy was compromised by his flaws as a human being; vain, cruel, capricious and dishonest, at times his notoriously corrupt nature threatened to damage the British political system. Richard Wilkinson provides a unique new perspective on one of the most phenomenally talented – but also one of the most phenomenally flawed – of British Prime Ministers. 304 PAGES 216X135MM MAY 2017 9781780763897 HARDBACK £25.00 / $45.00 A LIFE IN POLITICS e ebook available
VERY DEEPLY DYED IN BLACK Sir Oswald Mosley and the Resurrection of British Fascism after 1945 NEW IN PAPERBACK
Graham Macklin
In 1948 Oswald Mosley formed the Union Movement (UM), a global fascist force connecting the East and West of Soviet Russia and the US. In this study of Mosley as leader and individual, Graham Macklin shows how Mosley was superficially serene, teaching the ideals of The Alternative and accepted by leading elements of society, yet inwardly, and in unguarded moments, he remained the violent antisemite of early days. 224 PAGES 216 X 134MM NOVEMBER 2016 9781784530587 PAPERBACK £19.99 e ebook available
ALICE IN WESTMINSTER The Political Life of Alice Bacon NEW Rachel Reeves
Alice Bacon was one of the twentieth century’s most remarkable female politicians. Mentored by Herbert Morrison and Hugh Gaitskell, she rose through the party becoming a Home Office minister under Roy Jenkins and latterly an Education Minister with responsibility for the introduction of comprehensive schools. In the Home Office in the 1960s she oversaw the introduction of substantial societal changes, including the abolition of the death penalty, the decriminalisation of homosexuality and the legalisation of abortion. Her political career spanned some of the most momentous decades in Britain’s postwar history and she played an integral part in some of the most significant social, educational and political changes which the country has ever witnessed. Labour MP Rachel Reeves here tells Alice Bacon’s story, narrating one woman’s extraordinary progression from the coalfields to the Commons. 240 PAGES 226X155MM NOVEMBER 2016 9781784537685 HARDBACK £20.00 / $35.00 e ebook available

How did a distinct and powerful Black British identity emerge? In the 1950s, when many Caribbean migrants came to Britain, there was no such recognised entity as ‘Black Britain.’ Yet by the 1980s the cultural landscape had radically changed, and a remarkable array of creative practices such as theatre, poetry, literature, music and the visual arts gave voice to striking new articulations of Black-British identity. This new book chronicles the extraordinary blend of social, political and cultural influences, from the mid-1950s to late 1970s, that gave rise to new heights of Black-British artistic expression in the 1980s. 304 PAGES 216 X 134MM SEPTEMBER 2016 9781784536169 HARDBACK £64.00 / $99.00 9781784536176 PAPERBACK £15.99 / $28.00 e ebook available

BERLIN RULES
NEW
Europe and the German Way Paul Lever
After the referendum, what will be Britain’s role in Europe and, indeed, the world? Peter Wilding offers an arresting answer, plotting out a new course for Britain’s troubled relationship with Europe. Wilding identifies how British leaders from Pitt to Cameron have attempted to use exactly this ‘smart power’ in their approach to Europe. He tells the story of their shared experiences in forging Churchill’s strategy – a long-term plan which put Britain at the heart of Europe and the Commonwealth and alongside the United States – and applies it to Britain today. Outlining a new approach for Britain’s leaders, Wilding proposes a new, positive vision to position Britain in a fast-changing and fractured world. His book will provide valuable new perspectives on the debate about what Britain does next after the EU referendum. 128 PAGES 216 X 134MM SEPTEMBER 2016 9781784537593 PAPERBACK £8.99 / $19.50 e ebook available

Reticence as Dissidence under Post-Totalitarian Rule 1956-1989 Klara Kemp-Welch The Courtauld Institute of Art
Art historians have tended to frame late-socialist Central European art as either ‘totalitarian’ or ‘transitional’. This bold new book challenges this established viewpoint, contending that the artists of this era cannot be simply caricatured as dissident heroes, or easily subsumed into the formalist Western canon. Klara Kemp-Welch offers a compelling account of the ways in which artists in Poland, Czechoslovakia and Hungary embraced alternative forms of action-based practice just as their dissident counterparts were formulating alternative models of politics. In doing so, she makes a case for the moral and political coherence of Central European art, theory and oppositional activism in the late-socialist period, arguing for the region’s centrality to late-20th century intellectual and cultural history. 360 PAGES 234 X 156 AUGUST 2017 9781784533144 PAPERBACK £25.00 / $45.00 e ebook available

THE ECONOMIC STRUGGLE FOR POWER IN TITO’S YUGOSLAVIA

Best known as a classical archaeologist, Sir Arthur Evans was also fascinated by the history of Albania. In Albanian Letters, Evans not only explores the key political events of this period but also paints a vivid picture of the country’s complex social and cultural make-up. 224 PAGES 234 X 156 SEPTEMBER 2016 9781845116019 HARDBACK £45.00 / $75.00 e ebook available
Vladimir Unkovski-Korica re-assesses the key episodes of Tito’s rule – from the joint Stalin-Tito offensive of 1944, through to the Tito-Stalin split of 1948, the market reforms of the 1950s and the ‘turn to the West’ which led to Yugoslavia’s non-alignment policy. For the first time, Unkovski-Korica also outlines Tito’s internal battle with the Workers’ Councils – empowered union bodies which emerged with the ‘withering away of the party’ in the early 1950s.The Economic Struggle for Power in Tito’s Yugoslavia draws out the impact of the period economically and politically, and its long-term effects. A comprehensive history based on new archival research, this book will appeal to scholars and students of European Studies, International Relations and Politics, as well as to historians of the Balkans. 304 PAGES 216 X 134MM AUGUST 2017 9781780763286 HARDBACK £69.00 / $110.00 LIBRARY OF BALKAN STUDIES e ebook available

HUMAN RIGHTS IN RUSSIA
NEW IN PAPERBACK
In 1917 revolutionary fervour swept through Russia, ending centuries of imperial rule and instigating political and social changes that would lead to the formation of the Soviet Union. Arising out of proletariat discontent with the Tsarist autocracy and Lenin’s proclaimed version of a Marxist ideology, the revolutionary period saw a complete overhaul of Russian politics and society and led directly to the ensuing civil war. Geoffrey Swain provides a concise yet thorough overview of the revolution and the path to civil war. 256 PAGES 216 X 134MM JANUARY 2017 9781780767925 HARDBACK £64.00 / $99.00 9781780767932 PAPERBACK £10.99 / $15.95 I.B.TAURIS SHORT HISTORIES e ebook available

ONLINE ACTIVISM IN THE MIDDLE EAST NEW
Political Power and Authoritarian Governments from Egypt to Kuwait Jon Nordenson, University of Oslo
This book evaluates the importance of online platforms for effecting change and establishes a specific framework for doing so. Nordenson demonstrates the power of online activism to create an essential ‘counterpublic’ that can challenge an authoritarian state and enable excluded groups to fight in ways that are far more difficult to suppress than a demonstration. 336 PAGES 216 X 134MM DECEMBER 2016 9781784537784 HARDBACK £62.00 / $99.00 LIBRARY OF MODERN MIDDLE EAST STUDIES e ebook available

KENNEDY AND THE MIDDLE EAST NEW The Cold War, Israel and Saudi Arabia Antonio Perra
The Clash of Western and Arab Networks in the Middle East Tarek Cherkaoui
During the 2003 War in Iraq, American news media found it difficult to convey their pro-war perspective outside the United States. Since the war was unpopular in many parts of the world, failure to win hearts and minds – particularly in the Middle East – represented a significant setback for the American soft power. Tarek Cherkaoui reveals how geo-political and ideological legacies of the past, which divide the world into a dichotomy of ‘us’ against ‘them’, play a dominant role in reinforcing the ensuing polarisation. He argues that this clash of perspectives provides a snapshot into the new realities of our globally connected world. 256 PAGES 216 X 134MM DECEMBER 2016 9781780761046 HARDBACK £64.00 / $99.00 LIBRARY OF MODERN MIDDLE EAST STUDIES e ebook available
INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS AND POLITICS 2017
At the height of the Cold War, the John F. Kennedy administration designed an ambitious plan for the Middle East – to keep the Arab world neutral and contain the perceived communist threat. Antonio Perra shows for the first time how new relations with Saudi Arabia and Israel which would come to shape the Middle East for decades were in fact a by-product of Kennedy’s efforts at Soviet containment. 304 PAGES 216 X 134MM APRIL 2017 9781784538590 HARDBACK £62.00 / $99.00 e ebook available

POWER STRUGGLES IN THE MIDDLE EAST NEW The Islamist Politics of Hizbullah and the Muslim Brotherhood Eva Dingel
Islamism and PostIslamist Politics
Are Knudsen, Christian Michelson Institute; Basem Ezbidi, Birzeit University (Eds) In the wake of the protests that spread throughout the Middle East and North Africa in late 2010 and early 2011, Islamist movements of varying political persuasions have risen to prominence. This is especially the case in post-Mubarak Egypt and post-Ben Ali Tunisia. This book offers an analysis ranging from countries where Islamism is in control of the state as an Islamic theocracy (Iran), the ruling party (for example, Turkey), part of the ruling coalition (Lebanon), or a parliamentary minority (such as in Jordan or Yemen). 288 PAGES 216 X 134MM SEPTEMBER 2016 9781784536893 PAPERBACK £14.99 / $25.00 e ebook available

UNDERSTANDING IRAN From Ancient Times to the Islamic Republic NEW William Beeman University of Minnesota
While religious conservatism remains the creed of the Iranian establishment, this volume uncovers an underground world of new technology, media and entertainment spurred by an engaged, younger generation.
Iran is rarely out of the media spotlight. Whether because of its nuclear ambitions, its confrontation with the US or the provocative rhetoric of its leadership, Iran demands attention. In this riveting book, William Beeman pries open the complex and multifaceted society that makes up Iran. Sweeping through its history, Beeman seeks to show how Iranian identity has been forged. Though Iran has been profoundly influenced by the experience of many invasions, its identity is firmly anchored in its deeply subtle literary and artistic heritage producing the most ethnically diverse yet culturally united country in the Middle East. This poetic ambiguity is felt in every aspect of Iranian social and political life today.

Kaya Genç
Turkey stands at the crossroads of the Middle East – caught between the West, ISIS, Syria and Russia, and governed by an increasingly hard-line leader. While talking to Turkey’s angry young people, acclaimed author Kaya Genç weaves in historical stories, visions and mythologies, showing how Turkey’s progressives and conservatives take their ideological roots from two political movements born in the Ottoman Empire: the Young Turks and the Young Ottomans, two groups of intellectuals who were united in their determination to make their country more democratic. He shows a divided society coming to terms with the 21st century, and in doing so, gets to the heart of the compelling conflicts between history and modernity in the Middle East. 240 PAGES 216X135MM SEPTEMBER 2016 9781784534578 PAPERBACK £14.99 / $24.00 e ebook available

THE KURDS OF TURKEY NEW
National, Religious and Economic Identities Cuma Çiçek, Mardin Artuklu University
What is the Gülen Movement and why is Erdogan so convinced that the organisation was behind the failed military coup of 15th July 2016? The Gülen, or Hizmet, movement in Turkey was until recently the country’s most powerful and affluent religious organisation. The movement’s central tenet is that Muslims should engage positively with modernity, especially through mastering the sciences. In this groundbreaking study, Caroline Tee, an expert on the Gülen Movement, analyses the complex attitudes of Gülen and his followers towards secular modernity. Considered against the backdrop of Turkish politics, Gülenist engagement with modern science is revealed as a key source of the influence the movement has exerted. 240 PAGES 216 X 134MM AUGUST 2016 9781784535889 HARDBACK £20.00 / $29.50 e ebook available

After the aborted coup the spotlight is on Erdogan, whose authoritarian regime has increased tensions enormously – with thousands of journalists and army officers arrested, and academics under scrutiny. Cagaptay looks at where Erdogan comes from in Turkish history, what he believes in, how he has cemented his rule and will assess the threats he faces – from the liberal youth to the Gülen movement, the army plotters and the Kurdish question.

THE MISSION AND THE KINGDOM Wahhabi Power Behind the Saudi Throne NEW IN PAPERBACK
David Commins Dickinson College, Pennsylvania Wahhabism has been generating controversy since it first emerged in Arabia in the 18th century. In the wake of September 11th instant theories have emerged that try to root Osama Bin Laden’s attacks in Wahhabism. Muslim critics have dismissed this conservative interpretation of Islam that is the official creed of Saudi Arabia as an unorthodox innovation that manipulated a suggestible people to gain political influence. David Commins’ book questions this assumption. He examines the debate on the nature of Wahhabism and offers original findings on its ascendance in Saudi Arabia, and its spread throughout other parts of the Muslim world, such as Afghanistan and Pakistan. 304 PAGES 216X135MM SEPTEMBER 2016 9781784536824 PAPERBACK £10.99 / $15.95 e ebook available

Islamism, Political Protest and Revolution
Both at the American University in Cairo
Ahmed Tohamy Alexandria University, Egypt The protests that spread across the Middle East and North Africa in late 2010 and early 2011 took media commentators, academics and the ruling classes of these countries by surprise. In this book, Ahmed Tohamy analyses the oftenneglected trajectory that led up to the protests in Egypt that culminated in the fall of Hosni Mubarak in February 2011.Tohamy’s assertion is that by examining the decade preceding this momentous event, we see that the youth movement – far from being inert – was extremely active. Tohamy uses the Social Movements Theory to argue how Egyptian youth became a new agent of change in the Middle East. 336 PAGES 216 X 134MM AUGUST 2017 9781780769219 HARDBACK £69.00 / $110.00 LIBRARY OF MODERN MIDDLE EAST STUDIES e ebook available

COMMITTED TO DISILLUSION Activist Writers in Egypt from the 1950s to the 1980s NEW David DiMeo
David DiMeo focuses on the work of three leading writers whose socially committed fiction was adapted to the disenchantment and discontent of the late twentieth century: Naguib Mahfouz, Yusuf Idris, and Sonallah Ibrahim. Despite their disappointments with the direction of Egyptian society in the decades following the 1952 revolution, they kept the spirit of committed literature alive through a deeply introspective examination of the relationship between the writer, the public, and political power. 272 PAGES 230X150 SEPTEMBER 2016 9789774167614 HARDBACK £35.00 THE AMERICAN UNIVERSITY IN CAIRO PRESS e ebook available

OCCUPIED LIVES
The landslide victory of Hamas to the Palestinian Legislative Council in 2006 saw the ascent of a new actor on the parliamentary scene. The elections also constituted the first time Islamists had ascended to power in the Arab world by democratic means. But did Hamas proceed to govern in the same democratic manner it had displayed during these elections? Björn Brenner scrutinises the workings and origins of the Hamas government. He investigates the new government’s reaction to three key challenges to its power: official political opposition; violent radicalisation and local splinter groups; and the need to re-establish societal order and reform the judicial system.

SEEKING ASYLUM IN ISRAEL Refugees and the History of Migration Law NEW Gilad Ben-Nun
University of Leipzig and Verona University Between 2005 and 2014, approximately 70,000 asylumseeking refugees from Sudan and Eritrea entered Israel. This, along with the highly publicised anti-African immigrant riots in Israel in 2012 and 2014, has meant that the issue of African migration is now extremely controversial in Israel. Gilad Ben-Nun looks at this phenomenon, and compares it to the debates surrounding the Palestinian refugees in the region and the concept of their right of return. 304 PAGES 216 X 134MM DECEMBER 2016 9781784537609 HARDBACK £62.00 / $99.00 LIBRARY OF MODERN MIDDLE EAST STUDIES e ebook available

SOUTH ASIA AND THE GREAT POWERS International Relations and Regional Security NEW Sten Rynning (Ed) University of Southern Denmark
WOMEN AND VIOLENCE IN INDIA NEW
Gender, Oppression and the Politics of Neoliberalism Tamsin Bradley University of Portsmouth
South Asia’s security is becoming a factor of increasing importance both to local and more distant great powers: Pakistan, India, Iran, China and the US. This book asks whether the region’s great powers can overcome opposing interests and commit to political restraint.
India’s endemic gender-based violence has received increased international scrutiny and provoked waves of domestic protest and activism. Unwilling to simply accept patriarchy as the answer, Tamsin Bradley presents new research examining how different groups in India conceptualise violence against women, revealing beliefs around religion, caste and gender that render aggression socially acceptable. She also analyses the role that neoliberalism, and its corollary consumerism, play in reducing women to commodity objects for barter or exchange, normalising violence against women. Due to these complex and overlapping factors, rates of violence against women in India have actually increased despite decades of feminist campaigning.

Life, Love and Death in China’s Hidden Mountains NEW Choo Wai Hong

In a mist-shrouded valley on China’s invisible border with Tibet is a place known as the ‘Kingdom of Women’ – one of the last matrilineal societies on earth. All decisions and rights related to money, property, land and the children born to them rest with the Mosuo women, who live completely independently of husbands, fathers and brothers, with the grandmother as the head of each family. A unique practice is also enshrined in Mosuo tradition – that of ‘walking marriage’, where women choose their own lovers from men within the tribe but are beholden to none. 320 PAGES 216 X 134MM APRIL 2017 9781784534677 HARDBACK £75.00 / $120.00 e ebook available

CHINA’S BORDERLANDS
NEW
The Faultline of Central Asia Steven Parham, University of Bern
NEW UPDATED EDITION
Philip Short One of the great figures of the twentieth century, Chairman Mao looms irrepressibly over the economic rise of China. Mao Zedong was the leader of a revolution, a communist who lifted hundreds of millions out of poverty, an aggressive and distrustful leader, and a man responsible for more civilian deaths than perhaps any other historical figure. Now, four decades after Mao’s death, acclaimed biographer Philip Short presents a fully updated and revised edition of his ground-breaking and masterly biography. Vivid, uncompromising and unflinching, Short presents in one volume the man behind the propaganda – his family, his beliefs and his horrors. In doing so he shows us both the human being Mao was, and the monster he became. 768 PAGES 216X135MM OCTOBER 2016 9781784534639 PAPERBACK £14.99 / $25.00 e ebook available

SINGAPORE A Modern History NEW
Michael D Barr Flinders University Singapore gained independence in 1965, a city-state in a world of nation-states. Yet its long and complex history reaches much farther back. Blending modernity and tradition, ideologies and ethnicities, a peculiar set of factors make Singapore what it is today. In this thematic study of the island nation, Michael D Barr proposes a new approach to understand this development. From the pre-colonial period through to the modern day, he traces the idea, the politics and the geography of Singapore over five centuries of rich history. In doing so he rejects the official narrative of the so-called ‘Singapore Story’. Drawing on in-depth archival work and oral histories, Singapore: A Modern History is a work both for students of the country’s history and politics, but also for any reader seeking to engage with this enigmatic and vastly successful nation. 304 PAGES 228X155MM MAY 2017 9781780763057 HARDBACK £25.00 / $40.00 e ebook available

From Liberal Peacebuilding to Demilitarisation
Nyambura Wambugu University of Juba, South Sudan Just eight years after the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) and two years after gaining independence, the world’s newest nation state descended once more into violence and civil war. Why have policies of liberal peacebuilding failed to bring lasting stability to the region? And what now for South Sudan? Wambugu considers the complex and overlapping issues that have afflicted the region and demonstrates the failure of the billions of dollars spent on liberal peacebuilding. She also elucidates the possibility of demilitarisation as a lasting and sustainable alternative path to peace for post-conflict states. 320 PAGES 216 X 134MM FEBRUARY 2017 9781784536947 HARDBACK £62.00 / $99.00 INTERNATIONAL LIBRARY OF AFRICAN STUDIES e ebook available

Dalia M. Gouda
From the 1980s, billions of dollars were poured into irrigation improvement programmes in Egypt. These aimed at improving local Nile water management through the introduction of more water-efficient technology and by placing management of the improved systems in the hands of local water user associations. Dalia Gouda shows how the far-reaching social changes wrought at the village level in Egypt through the twentieth century rendered such a premise implausible at best and invalid at worst.

The threat of terrorism and the increasing power of terrorist groups have prompted a rapid growth of the security services and changes in legislation permitting collection of communications data. The media claims responsibility for holding power to account, yet cannot know more than superficial details about the newly empowered secret services. This book is the first to analyse, in the aftermath of the Snowden/NSA revelations, relations between two key institutions in the modern state: the intelligence services and the news media. It provides the answers to crucial questions including: how can power be held to account if one of the greatest state powers is secret? How far have the Snowden/NSA revelations damaged the activities of the secret services? And have governments lost all trust from journalists and the public? 272 PAGES 216 X 134MM OCTOBER 2016 9781784537081 PAPERBACK £11.99 / $17.95 e ebook available

GENDER
SEX TRAFFICKING IN TURKEY
Migration Policy, Prostitution and Gender Emel Coskun, Duzce University, Turkey NEW Turkey’s national counter-trafficking rhetoric is influenced by ideas about ‘irregular’ migration, national security and ‘illegal’ working. Having adopted definitions and legislation from the UN Protocol, sex trafficking is framed as a problem of organised crime, rather than of migration and global inequality. This book highlights the weaknesses of an international discourse on human trafficking and examines its impact in a local context. Emel Coskun explores Turkey’s national policy and practice by looking at the interactions between sex trafficking, prostitution and migration in the country.

SOCIALLY ENGAGED ART AFTER SOCIALISM
Transformations in Theory and Practice NEW Tarik Sabry and Layal Ftouni, both University of Westminster, London
Art and Civil Society in Post Communist Europe NEW Izabel Galliera McDaniel College, Westminster, Maryland
Izabel Galliera traces the development of socially engaged art from the early 1990s to the present in Bulgaria, Hungary and Romania. She demonstrates that, in the early 1990s, projects were primarily created for exhibitions organised and funded by the Soros Centers for Contemporary Art. In the early 2000s, prior to Bulgaria, Hungary and Romania entering into the European Union, EU institutions likewise funded socially-conscious public art in the region. Today, socially engaged art is characterised by the proliferation of independent, and often self-funded, artists’ initiatives in cities such as Sofia, Bucharest and Budapest.

MOLLA NASREDDIN
NEW
Polemics, Caricatures & Satire Slavs and Tatars (Eds) Molla Nasreddin was a satirical Azeri periodical named after the legendary Sufi wise man-cum-fool of the Middle Ages. With an acerbic sense of humour and realist illustrations, Molla Nasreddin attacked the hypocrisy of the Muslim clergy, the colonial policies of European nations and the US towards the rest of the world and the corruption of local elites, while at the same time arguing for educational reform and equal rights for women. Slavs and Tatars, a leading art collective focusing on Eurasia, has brought together this collection of sketches, caricatures and satirical writings from the periodical. 208 PAGES 280 X 240MM DECEMBER 2016 9781784535483 HARDBACK £35.00 / $49.00 e ebook available

What is ‘Arab’ about Arab subcultures? This book sets out to delineate different ways of studying and theorising Arab subcultural groups and practices, including film, graffiti, music, live art performances, techies and youth cultures. It opens up a critical dialogue, at the heart of which lies the key intellectual task of re-imagining the relation between aesthetics and politics in the age of revolutions.

Practice and Aesthetics from Baghdad to Casablanca Stefanie Van de Peer (Ed) In spite of censorship, oppression and war, a very vibrant animation culture exists in the Middle East and North Africa. The success of films like Persepolis and Waltz with Bashir is in part a product of a changing cultural climate which is increasingly calling for art that reflects politics. This book uncovers the history and politics that have defined the practice of animation in the region and explores the innovative visions of contemporary animators in the region. 240 PAGES 216 X 134MM JANUARY 2017 9781784533267 HARDBACK £64.00 / $99.00 e ebook available

Politics, Culture and Experimental Film in the 1970s Sue Clayton, Goldsmiths, University of London Laura Mulvey, Birkbeck College, London (Eds) The 1970s was an enormously creative period for experimental film. Other Cinemas establishes the factors that helped to shape this: world cinema, the politics of cultural policy and arts funding, new accessible technologies, avant-garde theories, and the development of a dynamic relationship between film and its audiences. This book takes account of a wave of socially aware film practice without which today’s activist voices would have struggled to gather such volume. 304 PAGES 216 X 134MM APRIL 2017 9781784537180 HARDBACK £58.00 / $94.00 9781784537197 PAPERBACK £15.99 / $26.00 e ebook available
