Religion New and Recent Books 2015

Religion Message from the Editor: In the often inharmonious modern world, perhaps especially in the religious sphere, there is more than ever a need for tolerance and mutual understanding. At the time of writing, the perils posed by extremism or of fundamentalist understandings of religion seem to be omnipresent, whether in Iraq where minority religions (particularly Christians and the ancient Yezidi communities) have suffered terribly at the hands of Islamic State militants, or in the efforts of the secular West to make adequate sense of the dangerous complexities of Middle Eastern politics. It is in this volatile context that voices calling for a more nuanced appreciation of belief – and of a history, not just of conflict, but also of co-operation and friendship between different religions – are of special value. For some time I.B.Tauris has attempted to contribute to the conversation by publishing books which explore precisely this history of empathy and engagement. The titles that we publish, written by experts (and often world authorities) in their respective fields, suggest where they can constructive ways forward for understanding religion not as a malign but as a positive force, properly engaged with culture and society, that can enable human beings to look at existence and their short time on this planet in a wholly fresh light. This season, new books such as My Way by Mona Siddiqui (p 17), The Three Sons of Abraham (p 25), Unbelievable (p 10), Ethics, History and Global Politics (p 11), The Yezidis (p 11), Religious Minorities of the Modern Middle East (p 10), and Dreams and Visions in the World of Islam (p 16) adopt an explicitly pluralistic and open-minded approach to vital questions of belief, identity, tradition and life in a fast-moving and rapidly changing world. It is in that same spirit of pluralism that I commend these, and the other titles of our religious programme, to you. And as always, I look forward with much interest to your reactions, as well as to your own proposals. Alex Wright Executive Editor, Religion awright@ibtauris.com I.B.Tauris & Co. MORMONISM

An Introduction Catharina Raudvere

In his lively and timely reappraisal of its apparent contradictions, Ruthven discusses the emergence of Mormonism as a world religion; its theology, structure and rituals; the Saints’ charismatic founder, Joseph Smith; the theocratic rule of Smith’s successor, Brigham Young; the 1890 ‘Manifesto’; the emergence of a Mormon Diaspora after WW1; and the impressive growth of Mormonism after WWII.

University of Copenhagen Assessing Islam as a truly global phenomenon, Raudvere engages thoroughly with history (explaining the significance of the revelation of the Prophet Muhammad and the origins of the different Sunni and Shi’a groups within Islam), while also giving full and comprehensive coverage to Muslim ritual life and Islamic ethics.

An Introduction Will Sweetman

Dhammachai Tipitaka Project, Thailand

University of Otago

In this comprehensive textbook,Wynne shows that the story of Buddhism as a global system of belief begins with the life of the Buddha in northern India in the fifth century. He discusses the many new advances that have been made with regard to its origins, and traces the ways that formative Indian doctrines helped shape the features of later Asian Buddhism.

Sweetman’s nuanced text helps unravel the complex strands of one of the world’s remarkable systems of belief, identifying the chief ingredients of Hinduism’s rich and distinctive flavour. Offering a broadly thematic and historical overview of thought and practice, the author explores the theological and philosophical abundance of this multifaceted religion.

MEDIEVAL HERESY An Introduction NEW Andrea Janelle Dickens Arizona State University

Renaissance Italy in the thirteenth century was transformed by two new religious orders – the Dominicans and the Franciscans – who built churches that rivaled cathedrals in size and splendor, often illustrated by the lives and miracles of their saints. This book accompanies an exhibition at the Frist Center for the Visual Arts and is the first major study to examine the art of these rival orders together, exploring the ways in which they used art as propaganda and to articulate their revolutionary concept of religious vocation.

RADICAL PROPHET

The Mystics, Subversives and Visionaries who Foretold the End of the World NEW Christopher Rowland University of Oxford

Christianity began with the conviction that the old order was finished. Jesus proclaimed that a new era, the Kingdom of God, was dawning. Yet despite its success, the countercultural radicalism of Christianity was soon tamed, as the Church attempted to control its doctrines and followers. Christopher Rowland shows that this was never the whole story. On the sidelines, the apocalyptic flame of the New Testament continued to burn. In 1649 the Diggers occupied St George’s Hill to put the egalitarianism of Christ into practice. ‘You must break these men or they will break you’, Cromwell declared of the ‘lunaticks’. This book argues that such revolutionaries understood the true intent of the enigma who threw over the tables of the money-changers: to summon a new epoch – strange, iconoclastic, uncomfortable and otherworldly. 272 PAGES 228 X 155MM MAY 2015 9781784532659 HARDBACK £25.00

RELIGION 2014-2015

Inquisitors in the Middle Ages believed they could tell the difference between believers and heretics. But Dickens shows that the lines drawn were far from clear-cut. Even as the church developed methods to regulate true practice, heretics remained part of a complex movement that was as deeply spiritual as that of their enemies. This bold textbook shows that the sometimes life-or-death distinction between sinner and saint was determined by factors of circumstance and control. 304 PAGES 216 X 134MM AUGUST 2015 9781845115739 HARDBACK £62.00 9781845115746 PAPERBACK £16.99 e ebook available

HIDDEN TREASURES OF ETHIOPIA A Guide to the Remote Churches of an Ancient Land NEW Marie-Jose Friedlander and Bob Friedlander

The period known as the fin de siècle (1870–1914) was a fluid and unsettling epoch of endings and beginnings, as well as of new forms of creativity and anxiety. Knight shows how late Victorian Britain reacted to the bold agendas being set by the thinkers of the time; and how prominent Church figures during the era first identified many of the concerns that have preoccupied Christians latterly.

Among Ethiopia’s greatest treasures are its remote churches, whose interiors astound with their vibrant colours and extraordinary illustrations. Maria-Jose Friedlander provides a unique guide to the churches, their architecture and decoration. Detailed plans show the exact location of the paintings within the churches and colour photographs by Bob Friedlander show the many aspects of the churches and their decoration in rich detail.

A SHORT HISTORY OF THE NEW TESTAMENT Halvor Moxnes

NEW

University of Oslo Few documents in world history can match the inspirational impact of the New Testament. For all its variety – gospels, letters and visions – this first-century collection of texts keeps always at its centre the enigmatic figure of Joshua/Jesus: the Jewish prophet who gathered a group around him, proclaimed the imminent end of the world, but was made captive by the authorities of Rome only to suffer a shameful criminal’s death on a cross. When his followers (including former persecutor Saul/Paul) became convinced that Jesus had defeated extinction, and had risen again to fresh life, the movement crossed over from Palestine to ignite the entire Graeco-Roman Mediterranean world. The author shows how the writings of this vibrant new faith came into being from oral transmission and then became the pillar of a great world religion. He explores their many varied usages in music, liturgy, art, language and literature. In discussing its textual origins, as well as its later reception, Moxnes shows above all how the New Testament has been employed both as a tool for liberation and as a means of power and control. 256 PAGES 216 X 134MM SEPTEMBER 2014 9781780766072 HARDBACK £58.00 9781780766089 PAPERBACK £12.99 I.B.TAURIS SHORT HISTORIES

A SHORT HISTORY OF THE REFORMATION Helen L Parish

NEW

University of Reading When, in October 1517, Martin Luther pinned his Ninety-Five Theses to the door of All Saints’ Church in Wittenberg he shattered the foundations of western Christendom. The Reformation of doctrine and practice that followed Luther’s seismic action, and protest against the sale of indulgences, fragmented the Church and overturned previously accepted certainties and priorities. But it did more, challenging the relationship between spiritual and secular authority, perceptions of the supernatural, the interpretation of the past, the role of women in society and church, and clerical attitudes towards marriage and sex. Drawing on the most recent historiography, Parish locates the Protestant Reformation in its many cultural, social and political contexts. She assesses the Reformers’ impact on art and architecture; on notions of authority, scripture and tradition; and – reflecting on the extent to which the printing press helped spread Reformation ideas – on oral, print and written culture. 256 PAGES 216 X 134MM APRIL 2015 9781780766096 HARDBACK £58.00 9781780766102 PAPERBACK £12.99 I.B.TAURIS SHORT HISTORIES

UNBELIEVABLE

DHARMA

The Hindu, Buddhist, Jain and Sikh Traditions of India Veena R. Howard, California State University, and Rita D. Sherma, University of Southern California (Eds)

Why We Believe and Why We Don’t Graham Ward University of Oxford

NEW

Why believe? What kinds of things do people believe in? And how does what they believe, or disbelieve, shape their lives? For Ward, one of the most innovative writers on contemporary religion, these questions go to the heart not only of who but of what we are as human beings. Over the last thirty years, our understandings of mind and consciousness have changed through exciting new developments in neuroscience. Ward addresses this quantum shift by exploring the biology of believing. He offers sustained reflection on perception, cognition, time, emotional intelligence, knowledge and sensation. Though the ‘truth’ of belief remains under increasing attack, in a thoroughly secularized context,Ward argues that secularity is itself a form of believing. Pointing to the places where prayer and dreams intersect, this book offers a remarkable journey through philosophy, theology and culture, revealing the true nature of the human condition.

Often translated as ‘ethics’, ‘religion’ or ‘religious law’, dharma possesses elements of each of these but is not confined to any single category. This much needed analysis of the history and heritage of dharma shows that it is instead a multi-faceted religious force that has defined and that continues to shape South Asian civilization in a whole multitude of forms.

Legend, History and the Ancient City Michael Seymour, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York Why has Babylon so creatively fired the human imagination? This book embraces art, archaeology, history and literature to find the answers. From Hammurabi and Nebuchadnezzar, to the Book of Revelation and Voltaire, to Umberto Eco and Gore Vidal, the author brings to light a carnival of disparate sources dominated by a powerful and intoxicating ideas such as the Tower of Babel and the city of sin, Yet captivating as this dark mythology is, at its root lies a remarkable civilization whose complex state-building, law-making and religion dominated Mesopotamia and beyond for millennia. 392 PAGES 216 X 134MM AUGUST 2014 9781848857018 HARDBACK £68.00

THE YEZIDIS

The History of a Community, Culture and Religion Birgül Açikyildiz Mardin Artuklu University NEW IN PAPERBACK

The shift from polytheism to monotheism changed the world radically. Akhenaten and Moses symbolize this shift and this study sheds light on the great transformation from different angles. It deals with the transition from one to the other, analyzing the Exodus myth and the shift in terms of evolution and revolution, and confronting Akhenaten and Moses in a new way. 192 PAGES 234 X 156MM AUGUST 2014 9789774166310 HARDBACK £25.00 THE AMERICAN UNIVERSITY IN CAIRO PRESS e ebook available

The minority communities of northern Iraq are under increasingly severe threat from Islamic State jihadists. Among these minorities, the Yezidis have one of the most remarkable legacies in the Middle East. Yet not just their religious and material culture but now their entire existence is in peril as entire populations seek refuge from their violent oppressors. But who are the Yezidis (or ‘Yazidis’)? Predominantly ethnic Kurds, and the target of persecution over many centuries, until now they have succeeded in keeping their ancient religion alive despite the claim that they are ‘devil worshippers.’ This essential guide reveals an intricate system of belief influenced by Zoroastrianism, Sufism and Mithraism. It explores the origins their origins, art and architecture and the often misunderstood connections with the Satan/Sheitan of Christian and Muslim tradition. Extensively illustrated, this pioneering book is a testimonial to one of the region’s most extraordinary and ancient peoples. 304 PAGES 216 X 134MM OCTOBER 2014 9781784532161 PAPERBACK £14.99 e ebook available

ETHICS, HISTORY AND GLOBAL POLITICS The Role of Religious and Moral Values in the Modern World NEW Robin W. Lovin, Southern Methodist University

FUNDAMENTALISMS Threats and Ideologies in the Modern World James D.G. Dunn (Ed) Durham University

NEW

Modern thought has been reluctant to introduce questions of belief and value into political discourse. This book argues that while cultural and religious barriers are real, they need not set limits to our moral concerns. To retain its integrity, religion must commit itself to political pluralism and institutional variety. Ranging across the history of ethics and Western philosophy, this is a fresh and imaginative reading of moral value and its place in public life and political order. 288 PAGES 210 X 148MM NOVEMBER 2015 9781848854666 HARDBACK £62.00 e ebook available

This volume explores the origins and articulations of the fundamentalist mindset, addresses the subject from the comparative perspective of different religions, including Judaism and Hinduism. Contending that notions of certainty and infallibility are not just a religious phenomenon, the book argues that fundamentalism can be detected in science too. This is a bold and incisive assessment of a crucial yet often oversimplified topic. 256 PAGES 234 X 156MM MARCH 2015 9781780769509 HARDBACK £59.50 e ebook available

In the past 300 years, Shi‘i Islam has grown impressively in Iraq, northern India and Pakistan and has dominated Islamic world politics since the 1970s. Cole examines Shi‘i Islam as a world religion that has faced modernity on its own terms. He demonstrates the way in which Shi‘is have sought to define space and time as sacred, and to defend those spaces from encroachments by the Other, whether that Other be Sunni Arab, Hindu or European Christian. Yet the Shi‘i struggle for identity in the modern world has not been only a matter of reactionary digging in. Cole shows that Shi‘i clerical institutions have been supple and imaginative in coming to terms with phenomena such as modern finance capital, imperialism and the modern bureaucratic state. 272 PAGES 198 X 126MM MAY 2015 9781780769745 PAPERBACK £11.99

Sufism is all too often associated just with ‘mysticism’ in the West. In this original new book, Buehler suggests that conflating Sufism and mysticism is only partially valid. He shows that the vast majority of Sufi practice, both recently and throughout history, has little or nothing to do with a esoteric transcendence but is rather focused on contemplative activity. 256 PAGES 216 X 134MM MAY 2015 9781848857896 HARDBACK £58.00 9781848857902 PAPERBACK £14.99

SHARIA AND THE CONCEPT OF BENEFIT The Use and Function of Maslaha in Islamic Jurisprudence Abdul Aziz bin Sattam, Imam Muhammad bin

Saud Islamic University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia Foreword by Muhammad A S Abdel Haleem NEW The idea of maslaha has a rich history in classical legal thought and literature. Translated as ‘general benefit’ or ‘general interest’, it is the subject of intense argument in Muslim legal manuals about how it should be interpreted. In this thorough treatment, the author offers the first examination of one of the most important tenets of Sharia. 224 PAGES 216 X 134MM DECEMBER 2014 9781784530242 HARDBACK £56.00 e ebook available

THE STATE IN CONTEMPORARY ISLAMIC THOUGHT NEW IN PAPERBACK

A Historical Survey of the Major Muslim Political Thinkers of the Modern Era Abdelilah Belkeziz, Hasan II University in Casablanca

People in Western societies have long been interested in their dreams and what they mean. For Muslims, dreaming and the import of visions are of enormous significance – many believe that they are receiving divine guidance. Sirriyeh offers the first concerted history of the rise of dream interpretation in Islamic culture, from medieval times to the present. This timely volume gives an important, fascinating and overlooked subject the exploration it has long deserved.

Belkeziz charts the development of the concept of ‘the state’ (al-Dawlah) in Islamic discourse over the last two centuries. The result is a survey of the most influential Muslim thinkers of the modern era, from the Modernist trends of the early and later reformers; the transition and break with the Reformist trend; to the political rhetoric of the Revivalists. 304 PAGES 234 X 156MM SEPTEMBER 2014 9781780766492 PAPERBACK £17.99

ISLAM IN AMERICA Jonathan Curiel

NEW

Islam is a hidden ingredient in the melting pot of America. Though there are 2–8 million Muslims in the USA, Islam has traditionally had little political clout. Nonetheless it is believed to be the country’s fastest-growing religion, with a vibrant culture of theological debate. In this book, Curiel traces the story of America’s Muslims from the seventeenthcentury slave trade to the eighteenth-century immigration wave to the Nation of Islam. Drawing on interviews, Curiel portrays the diversity of practices, cultures and observances that make up Muslim America. He profiles the leading personalities and institutions representing the community, and explores their relationship to the wider politics of America. 192 PAGES 216 X 134MM NOVEMBER 2014 9781848855984 HARDBACK £58.00 9781848855991 PAPERBACK £12.99

Bokhari presents a spectrum of radical Islamist thinkers from across the globe, including Bin Laden’s own deputy. Carefully situating each piece of writing in its cultural and political context, Bokhari offers us insights into radical Islamist thinking on a range of issues such as their perception of the Western concepts of democracy, their scepticism towards the Middle East peace process and how to deal with the West. 256 PAGES 216 X 134MM MAY 2015 9781845111304 HARDBACK £42.50 9781845111311 PAPERBACK £12.99 LIBRARY OF MODERN MIDDLE EAST STUDIES, VOL. 53

Polarized debates about ‘Islam’ and ‘the West’ are now so ubiquitous that it is easy to forget how damaging they can be. The vast majority of Muslims do not wish to see Islam used as a divisive force. How then can Muslim stereotyping be challenged? Mona Siddiqui is one of the foremost Western authorities on the reconciliation of twenty-first-century life and Islamic custom. In this new and searching book, she applies a uniquely probing intelligence to crucial issues of faith and identity within society at large. While speaking from within a particular tradition, she touches on universal concerns. Who are we? How do we cope with growing older? What kind of world will we leave to our children? Placing her personal journey in a wider context, the author is able to explore love and sex, multiculturalism and diversity, and ageing and death through the prism of her experience as both a Muslim and a modern woman. 256 PAGES 216 X 135MM NOVEMBER 2014 9781780769349 HARDBACK £20.00 e ebook available

BEYOND FEMINISM AND ISLAMISM Gender and Equality in North Africa Doris H. Gray, Florida State University NEW IN PAPERBACK Is being a Muslim incompatible with feminism? Is there such a thing as ‘Islamic feminism’? Through interviews with Moroccan activists and jurists, Gray attempts to move beyond the simple bifurcation of ‘feminist’ and ‘Islamist’ to look at the many facets of internal gender discourse within one Muslim country, allowing for a more nuanced understanding of the discussion on women’s rights in the Muslim world in general. By looking beyond ‘feminism’ and ‘Islamism’, Gray presents religion and faith not as blocking gender equality but as a source of inspiration to explore new ways of conceiving modernity. 256 PAGES 216 X 134MM SEPTEMBER 2014 9781784530068 PAPERBACK £25.00

GENERATION M New Muslims, New Style Shelina Janmohamed NEW The Arab Spring – though in many ways thwarted – has raised the prospect of a segment of Islamic societies which has an eye on the future of the Muslim world. This new generation are tech-savvy and self-empowered, that believe that their identity encompasses both faith and modernity. For these Muslims, their faith informs the way they consume, interact, work, and spend their leisure time. Janmohamed explores this cultural phenomenon, setting out to understand the mindset of Muslim youths, and what drives them. 256 PAGES 216 X 134MM FEBRUARY 2015 9781780769097 PAPERBACK £14.99

The History, Religion and Culture of a Community in the Islamic World

Andrews University, Michigan

NEW

Houman M. Sarshar

Living continuously in Iran for over 2700 years, Jews have played an integral role in the history of the country. Frequently understood as a passive minority group, and often marginalized by the Zoroastrian and succeeding Muslim hegemony, the Jews of Iran are instead portrayed in this book as having had an active role in the development of Iranian history, society, and culture. Examining ancient texts, objects, and art from a wide range of times and places throughout Iranian history, as well as the medieval trade routes along which these would have travelled, this book offers in-depth analysis of the material and visual culture of this community. Additionally, an exploration of more modern accounts of Jewish women’s experiences sheds light on the social history and transformations of the Jews of Iran from the rule of Cyrus the Great (c. 600–530 BCE) to the Iranian Revolution of 1978/9.

This books starts from the premise that there is a price to be paid by the ‘sons of Abraham’: whether Jews, Muslims or Christians. Mature interfaith discussion offers respect for a shared heritage while also recognising points of distinctiveness. This book explores what articulating such regardful difference, as well as commonality, means for the future of faith relations.

GANDHI AND THE MIDDLE EAST Jews, Arabs and Imperial Interests NEW IN PAPERBACK

Simone Panter-Brick

Sweetman’s nuanced text helps unravel the complex strands of one of the world’s remarkable systems of belief, identifying the chief ingredients of Hinduism’s rich and distinctive flavour. Offering a broadly thematic and historical overview of the thought and practice, the author explores the theological and philosophical abundance of this multi-faceted religion. 264 PAGES 216 X 134MM JULY 2015 9781848853270 HARDBACK £45.00 9781848853287 PAPERBACK £14.99

Gandhi’s involvement in Middle Eastern politics is largely forgotten yet it goes to the heart of his teaching and ambition – to lead a united freedom movement against British colonial power. He sought to reconcile Jews and Arabs in a secret deal at the time of the Mandate of Palestine, but Jewish and British interference coupled with the Arab Revolt and the rise of the Muslim League in India thwarted his efforts. Like so many who would follow, Gandhi was unable to solve the problems of the Middle East, but this book for the first time reveals his attempt to do so. Gandhi’s experience in the Middle East was in marked contrast to his other successes and is crucial for a full understanding of his life and teachings. This book is a revealing insight into the goals and limits of an international statesman at a critical period of history. 216 PAGES 216 X 134MM OCTOBER 2014 9781784530228 PAPERBACK £14.99

The philosophical traditions of China have arguably influenced more human beings than any other. China has been the home not only of its indigenous philosophical traditions of Confucianism and Daoism, but also of uniquely modified forms of Buddhism. These traditions have formed the bedrock of the longest continuing civilization on the planet; and Chinese philosophy has profoundly shaped the institutions, social practices and psychological character of East and Southeast Asia. The author surveys the key texts and philosophical systems; from the Han dynasty to the present, he discusses the six classical schools of Chinese philosophy; the arrival of Buddhism in China and its distinctive development; the central figures and movements from the end of the Tang dynasty to the introduction of Western thought; and the impact of Chinese philosophers – from Confucius and Laozi to Tu Weiming – on their equivalents in the West. 304 PAGES 216 X 134MM MAY 2015 9781784532611 HARDBACK £62.00 9781784532628 PAPERBACK £16.99 LIBRARY OF MODERN RELIGION

INDIAN PHILOSOPHY The Essential Writings NEW Jeffery D. Long, Elizabethtown College, Pennsylvania Across the millennia, the Indian subcontinent has given rise to schools of thought as diverse as Jainism, Buddhism, Hinduism, Materialism and Vedanta. Long offers a judicious and wide-ranging selection of the key texts that form the basis for these and other major schools of Indian philosophy. Chronologically structured with up-to-date translations and a focus on modern as well as classical and pre-classical texts, the author presents the continuing contributions of Indian philosophy to international thought. 304 PAGES 216 X 134MM MAY 2015 9781780762036 HARDBACK £62.00 9781780762043 PAPERBACK £17.99 LIBRARY OF MODERN RELIGION, VOL. 29

What do Buddhism and Islam have in common? And what positive characteristics might Buddhist Japan and Muslim Indonesia be able to offer one another? In this thoughtful and wide-ranging discussion, distinguished representatives from each country demonstrate that meaningful dialogue between religions and cultures begins with a one-to-one conversation between individuals. Both thinkers draw on their respective traditions to show that harmony springs from an attitude of tolerance and non-violence, which is where true courage resides.

ENGLAND’S FIRST DEMONOLOGIST Reginald Scot and the ‘Discoverie of Witchcraft’ NEW IN PAPERBACK Philip C. Almond, University of Queensland 1584: Reginald Scot publishes The Discoverie of Witchcraft. England’s first major work of demonology, witchcraft and the occult, the book was unapologetically sceptical.Yet for all his scorn for orthodoxy about witches, his account helped strengthen the hold of European demonologies while also inspiring the distinctively English tradition of secular magic and conjuring. Recognising Scot’s central importance in the history of ideas, Almond examines the chief themes of his work and shows why it has been a sourcebook for aspiring magicians and conjurors for several hundred years. 256 PAGES 216 X 156MM SEPTEMBER 2014 9781780769639 PAPERBACK £14.99 e ebook available

KING ARTHUR’S ENCHANTRESSES

EMBRACING THE DARKNESS NEW

A Cultural History of Witchcraft John Callow, Lancaster University

Morgan and Her Sisters in Arthurian Tradition Carolyne Larrington, St John’s College, Oxford NEW IN PAPERBACK

In this fascinating book Larrington offers a contemporary take on the Arthurian myth by focussing on the powerful women who play a central part in it. From Morganle-Fay, a cunning and powerful enchantress, to the benevolent Lady of the Lake and Morgause, Arthur’s sister, who lacks magical power, these women are mysterious, often alluring figures. Encompassing film, art, history, opera and literature, this book shows how important and culturally resonant the enchantresses are in the collective European cultural imagination. Whether they be wise healers, beguiling seductresses, or enemies of Arthur and all he stands for, the enchantresses continue to speak to us of a dynamic female tradition in Arthurian mythology as compelling and provocative as they are themselves. 272 PAGES 216 X 134MM OCTOBER 2014 9781784530419 PAPERBACK £14.99

From the Salem witch trials to the macabre novels of Dennis Wheatley; from Derek Jarman’s punk film ‘Jubilee’ to Ken Russell’s ‘The Devils’, Callow brings the twilight world of the witch, mage and necromancer to life. Witchcraft has profoundly shaped the western imagination, and endures in the forms of modern-day Wicca and paganism. This book is an enthralling account of this fascinating aspect of the western cultural experience. 264 PAGES 234 X 156MM MAY 2015 9781845114695 HARDBACK £19.50
