To kick off the New Year, Viviane Sassen presents a major solo-show in the ICA Lower Gallery, while Dor Guez displays powerful new work in our Upper Gallery. Working both commercially in fashion and on personal projects in Suriname, South America, Sassen is an extraordinary photographer with an unerring ability to produce arresting images. Meanwhile, Guez examines the recordings of a painter-turned-soldier who underwent post-traumatic stress having served in the Yom Kippur War. In March, we premiere a large-scale installation by distinguished collector, curator and former gallerist Ydessa Hendeles. Shown in the ICA Theatre, From her wooden sleep… consists of a mesmerising collection of life-size mannequins and historic artefacts presented as a single artwork. Thereafter, our talks, events and film screenings continue to inspire. I hope you can join us in the coming weeks.

Viviane Sassen Pikin Slee

The ICA is delighted to present a solo exhibition of recent work by Viviane Sassen, a photographer who has garnered parallel critical acclaim as a fashion photographer and in the context of contemporary visual art. The content of the exhibition focuses predominantly on a body of work that Sassen made in Pikin Slee, Suriname in 2013. Pikin Slee is the second-largest village on the Upper Suriname River, deep within the Surinamese rainforest. Sassen’s eye was caught by the overwhelming natural beauty and the Saramacca's very traditional way of living, combined with the more mundane objects that permeate daily life. Shot mainly in black and white and of contained format, Sassen's series of abstract compositions and elusive subjects are an exploration of the beauty of the everyday, an investigation of the sculptural qualities of the ordinary. Dor Guez The Sick Man of Europe

In collaboration with The Mosaic Rooms, ICA presents the first UK institutional solo exhibition of artist Dor Guez. As an artist of Christian Palestinian and Jewish Tunisian descent, living in Jaffa, he is considered a leading and critical voice from the Middle East, whose practice questions the role of contemporary art in narrating unwritten histories. Entitled The Painter, this new installation is the first of five from a new body of work, The Sick Man of Europe. Guez's most ambitious project to date, it reflects on the military history and current political climate of the Middle East through the creative practices of individual soldiers from the region. Accompanying the exhibition will be a publication, produced in collaboration with The Mosaic Rooms, designed by Koby Barhad and including an essay by Achim Borchardt-Hume, Head of Exhibitions, Tate Modern. Ydessa Hendeles From her wooden sleep…

The ICA is pleased to present From her wooden sleep…, a major new work by German-born Canadian artist-curator Ydessa Hendeles. In From her wooden sleep…, Hendeles draws together disparate elements to compose a tightly choreographed tableau vivant. Continuing her daring explorations of psychologically charged cultural artefacts, Hendeles has staged this show to give visitors an unexpectedly intimate encounter with the work’s many suggestive elements. Central to the installation is a remarkable and unique collection of 150 wooden artist mannequins collected by the artist-curator over thirty years. Ranging in date from 1520 to 1930 and in scale from palm-size to life-size, the mannequins surround a lone figure that stands exposed in the crossfire of their gaze. The intense focus of the scenario suggests a community gathering — perhaps in a courtroom, or at an auction, anatomy lesson or drawing class. The result is a multi-layered meditation on belonging. The ICA exhibition is curated by Philip Larratt-Smith. Supported by the Ydessa Hendeles Exhibition Supporters Group including Wendy Fisher and the Kirsh Foundation

First Happenings Adrian Henri in the ‘60s and ‘70s

FB55

First Happenings: Adrian Henri in the ‘60s and ‘70s offers a focused look at Adrian Henri’s pioneering role in the ‘Happenings movement’ in Liverpool and across Britain. Henri was a central protagonist during this period of intense creativity and collaboration, working with performance artists including Allan Kaprow, Yoko Ono and Mark Boyle. Reflecting Henri’s eclecticism and insatiable curiosity, this display features numerous artefacts including original prints, collages, annotated scripts and hand-made posters for Happenings, alongside audio and video material. First Happenings is curated by Paris-based art historian Catherine Marcangeli in collaboration with the ICA. All works from the Estate of Adrian Henri.

FB55 is an archival display of Francis Bacon’s show held at the ICA’s former premises on Dover Street in 1955. At the time it was Bacon’s first ever solo institutional exhibition in the UK and was organised with the help of philanthropist, collector and ICA founder Peter Watson. The presentation in the ICA Fox Reading Room will include a display of documents, installation photographs, press reviews, invitation cards and publications. In keeping with the ICA's radical art and culture remit, the exhibition has been referred to as one of Bacon's more confrontational shows, combining images of the Catholic state with Bacon's gilded gutter life.

This symposium, co-organised by Jon Bird from the Middlesex University and Luke Skrebowski from the University of Cambridge, includes a conversation with Hans Haacke and presentations by international speakers on various aspects of the artist's work and art in the public domain. From 20 Feb Maidan chronicles a civil uprising against the regime of president Yanukovych which took place in Kiev (Ukraine) in the winter of 2013/14. The film follows the progress of the revolution: from peaceful rallies, half a million strong, in the Maidan square, to the bloody street battles between the protestors and riot police.
