The ICA looks forward to Lives on Wire by young Londonbased artist Eloise Hawser. Presented in our Lower Gallery, this site-specific installation represents Hawser's first UK institutional solo-show. Simultaneously in our Upper Gallery, we present Isa Genzken’s 'Basic Research Paintings' - a series of works produced by the artist during the late-80s and early 90s. Shout Out! UK Pirate Radio in the 1980s takes over the ICA Fox Reading Room, followed by a display on the influential Viennabased magazine Bau: Magazine for Architecture and Urban Planning. In August we exclusively release the latest Alejandro Jodorowsky film The Dance of Reality. For his new online commission, Yuri Pattison responds to the ICA's historic 1968 exhibition Cybernetic Serendipity. In September, we host the Artist Self-Publishers' Fair (ASP) featuring over fifty independent self-publishers, and a series of performances in our Upper Galleries with a new commission presented by Adam Linder. Our ICA Associates music programme featuring Warp, Blackest Ever Black and Boiler Room continues alongside the ICA Cinema programme that explores the use of football to address the contemporary condition and a week-long series of cinematic gems from Second Run DVD.

Eloise Hawser Lives on Wire

Lives on Wire is the first UK solo institutional exhibition by British artist Eloise Hawser. Her work reconfigures and repurposes commonplace materials applied in industrial processes to create sculptures and installations that subtly demonstrate the inherent mutability of everyday objects. For Lives on Wire Hawser presents a site-specific installation featuring new sculpture and a digital video work developed through her investigative research into the life span of the cinema organ, ubiquitous during the silent-movie-era. Hawser’s new work seeks to analyse the theoretical and physical attributes of a variable electronic resistor used to illuminate the Art Deco surround of this instrument during cinematic performances, known as the cinema organ colour changer. For the exhibition the relationship between the colour changer mechanism and the illuminated console is re-established and demonstrated using the ICA’s Lower Gallery lighting system, to control the colour and intensity of the gallery's lights. In doing so Hawser explores the potential for obsolete objects to be appropriated and transformed for contemporary use, a process often referred to as skeuomorphism. Isa Genzken Basic Research Paintings

Since the early 1970s, Genzken has developed an extraordinary practice as evidenced through museum shows such as her recent retrospective at MoMA, New York. Increasingly ambitious displays of the artist’s work have tended toward a focus on large-scale sculptures, installations and impressive wall mounted panel works. Lesser known are her paintings. The Basic Research paintings are compelling in that they invite scrutiny from the micro to macro, revealing themselves as close-up impressions of urban architecture, to aerial views of alien landscapes. These works are sometimes compared to the abstract paintings of Gerhard Richter, due to Genzken’s relationship with the artist at that time. By contrast, Genzken’s approach to abstract painting is emboldened through a more straightforward and direct approach, using a limited palette that rarely strays from a range of dark hues such as dark green or brown. The exhibition was curated by Gregor Muir and originally featured as part of the ICA touring exhibition Beware Wet Paint held at the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo in 2014-15. Everything is Architecture: Bau Magazine from the 60s and 70s

Shout Out! UK Pirate Radio in the 1980s is an archival exhibition looking back at the early tower block pirate radio movement which emerged in the UK during the 1980s, prompting a new musical phenomenon that would change the face of British music. Pirate radio is often associated with the off-shore broadcasting of the 1960s, but in the 1980s it enjoyed a renaissance. This time stations were broadcasting music from the roofs of residential tower blocks rather than at sea. Although often overlooked, these stations were pioneers, championing music of black origin and paving the way for burgeoning rave scenes; jungle, garage and house. This display tracks the history and cultural significance of 1980’s pirate radio in the UK, and its legacy for contemporary music and broadcasting.

The first significant presentation in the UK of the influential Vienna-based architectural magazine Bau: Magazine for Architecture and Urban Planning, published by the Central Association of Austrian Architects. The display includes original issues of the magazine published between 1965 and 1970. Bau became a platform to explore new experimental ideas which considered architecture beyond mere concrete and instead ventured into the realms of art and politics. This radical, interdisciplinary approach to architecture was crystallised in the 1968 issue of Bau in which the highly influential architect Hans Hollein boldly claimed that 'Everything is Architecture'. From a lipstick, a portrait of Che Guevara to an astronaut suit and the performances of the Viennese Actionist Otto Mühl, all could be considered architectural, aiming to question the pre-war functionality that defined modernist architecture.

Yuri Pattison mute conversation

Choreographer and Dancer Adam Linder’s “Choreographic Services” (2013-ongoing) are a series of works, hired on a per-hour basis, that underwrite real-time and economic principles of choreographic activity. The new commission Some Riding will be hired for a series of performances for the Upper Galleries. Linder takes the significance for contextualisation in contemporary art production as his starting point. Two specially commissioned texts by writers Catherine Damman and Sarah Lehrer Graiwer will examine ideas of ‘choreographic embodiment’ and 'economies of performance' – the touchstones for Linder's Services. Having memorised these texts, Linder and dancer Frances Chiaverini will orate them whilst choreographically riding the flow of the language, enacting the written context and simultaneously providing the performative dynamics for Some Riding.

In Autumn 2014, the ICA staged a Reading Room display that focused on the landmark 1968 exhibition Cybernetic Serendipity. Curated by Jasia Reichardt, this was the first exhibition devoted to the relationship between the arts and new technology, foregrounding many new developments in the field. Marking the archival display’s opening and subsequent national and international tour, the ICA has invited Londonbased artist Yuri Pattison to respond to the themes addressed in Cybernetic Serendipity in light of the recent societal shift brought on by digital technology. For this new commission, Pattison has created an online work titled mute conversation, which connects two automated agents (commercial chatterbots) in conversation. → mute.conversation.ica.org.uk

Hustlers Convention

Slow West

From 26 Jun Hailed by Grandmaster Flash and Chuck D, sampled by the Beastie Boys, Wu Tang Clan and Nas, Hustlers Convention, released in 1973 was the foundation for today’s hip-hop scene. This film tells of one of music’s buried masterpieces: the missing link between soul power and hip hop. The documentary tells the story of two young hustlers who attend the eponymous convention, only to get tangled up in a shootout and police chase. It is also a tale within a tale of culture and identity, of ambition and greed, that gave the streets a voice, was recited in neighbourhoods word for word and still resonates with meaning today.

From 26 Jun Dark humour pervades this gritty western as naive teenager Jay Cavendish searches for his estranged sweetheart, who alas has a price on her head. Rescued from a vicious bandit, and henceforth accompanied by Silas, a roughneck drifter with an agenda all his own, Jay eventually learns what it is to be a man in an unyielding world. John Mclean writes and directs his first feature – shot in New Zealand – with a keen grasp of dramatic reversal and the visual majesty of the Old West, to gripping and quietly magnificent ends.

Horse Money

From 21 Aug The Dance of Reality marks the return of Chilean filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky, the visionary behind cult classics El Topo and The Holy Mountain. In this radiantly visceral autobiographical film, a young Jodorowsky is confronted by a collection of compelling characters that contributed to his burgeoning surreal consciousness. Born in 1929 in Tocopilla, a coastal town on the edge of the Chilean desert, where the film was shot, Jodorowsky blends personal history with metaphor, mythology and poetry. The Dance of Reality reflects Jodorowsky’s philosophy that reality is not objective but rather a “dance” created by our own imaginations. 34

With a particular focus on British women filmmakers who have excelled in making works of independence and originality, Onwards and Outwards is a nationwide programme of screenings, talks, and events, which aim to establish a dialogue around the conditions of production that women face when attempting to use the moving image as a means of expression. Chantal Akerman Retrospective and Onwards & Outwards is made possible with support from the BFI, awarding funds from the National Lottery.

Special Events

10 years of Second Run

4 Aug – 15 Sep 2015 Football is a social act that represents much more than a game to many people around the world. This ICA Cinematheque season emerges in response to films that have continued to employ football as a device through which to explore such popular aspects. The recent award winning Timbuktu (Sissako, 2014) demonstrates how successfully football may be used to illustrate wider social activities, where the strength of a community faced with difficulty is made utterly apparent by their attachment to the game. The films chosen within this programme represent a survey of football’s use within cinema as an act that expresses a whole host of ideas within any context. Each screening allows us the opportunity to develop our understanding of this activity as a cinematic device, and to investigate the social and political significance that it holds for many. The ICA Cinematheque is a strand of programming that incorporates classic art house titles, film seasons, director retrospectives and 35mm repertory screenings into the weekly cinema events.

New in the Bookshop Ben Lerner 10:04 (Granta, July 2015) “[In] 10:04, Lerner is saying that life is too fragmented, too multifarious to be narrowed down to one single narrative, but that doesn't mean it can't be captured, in all its heartbreaking variety, in the pages of a novel... Lerner is a great writer and 10:04 a great novel” – Alex Preston Opening times Tue – Sun, 11am – 9pm
