Juergen Teller, from the series Irene im Wald, 2012
Juergen Teller is one of the most important photographers of our time. Since the early 90s, Teller has been operating successfully both in the art world and the world of commercial photography. This exhibition provides a seamless journey through his landmark work, presenting iconic images of celebrities such as Lily Cole, Kurt Cobain and Vivienne Westwood. Also exhibited are more recent series, such as Irene im Wald and Keys to the House, which reveal the photographer’s more personal world in his hometown in Germany and his family home. Teller’s provocative interventions in portraiture subvert the conventional relationship of the artist and model. Whatever the setting, all his subjects collaborate in a way that allows for the most surprising poses and emotional intensity. Driven by a desire to tell a story in every picture he takes, Teller has shaped his own distinct and instantly recognisable style combining humour, self-mockery and an emotional honesty. The exhibition will be accompanied by a presentation of some of Juergen Teller’s books and a wallpaper consisting of his editorial and advertising work in the Fox Reading Room. With thanks to the Juergen Teller Exhibitions Supporters Group: Lehmann Maupin, Shane Akeroyd, Derek & Christine Wilson, The Edwin Fox Foundation, and others who wish to remain anonymous.

Guy Bourdin: A Legacy Wed 6 Feb, 6.45pm As part of our season on photography, we present a talk about the prolific and revolutionary fashion photographer Guy Bourdin, whose extensive editorial shoots for French Vogue and Charles Jourdan, among many others, broke conventions of fashion photography. As an image-maker the product became secondary to the content and visual composition of his photographs. Controlled composition, hyper-real colours, interplays of light and shadow, sensual and surrealist mise-en-scenes showed his artistic contribution to the world of fashion photography. Acclaimed for his cutting edge and daring narratives, the power of his images are still timeless and modern. The event includes screenings of rare footage of Guy Bourdin's cine films that capture his creative process and the fashion culture he witnessed. Samuel Bourdin, Guy Bourdin's only son and co-author of the publication Exhibit A: Guy Bourdin, will discuss his father's work alongside Philippe Garner and Judith Clark. Philippe Garner is a Senior Director of Christies and International Head of Photographs and has written extensively about 20th century photography including contributing to the legacy of Guy Bourdin. Celebrated curator and international lecturer Judith Clark has headed major exhibitions, from Anna Piaggi's Fashion-ology at the V&A to last year's striking Chloé Attitudes, where sixty years of the revered fashion house's creations were displayed along with a treasure trove of photography including the work of Bourdin. £12 / £10 Concessions / £8 ICA Members / £5 ICA Student Members
