Our Transplant Institute reached new heights in 2018. We performed two Eight-Person Kidney Paired Donation Transplant Chains in 2018. The second chain of four donors and four recipients just went home from Research with new life last week. One kidney donor came from the St. Louis area. She gave one of her kidneys to a stranger so her young son could receive the matching kidney he needed from a stranger. One altruistic donor (an anonymous living donor who chooses to give a kidney to anyone in need) traveled from Pennsylvania to be part of the eight-person chain. Dr. Cates, Dr. Dalal, Dr. Murillo, Dr. Lehr, surgical and nursing teams, Transplant Institute, and many more employees made this happen. We also recently celebrated “Thankful Families” with six patients, their first responders and their Research care teams. Albert is a patient we cared for on our burn unit. His EMS professionals were so glad to see how well he is doing! Our patients George and Thomas spoke about their FAST stroke care. Klaire, Matt and Dalton overcame very serious trauma to share about their second chance at life. Each family is so happy to be celebrating the holiday season. You can see photos on pg. 8 and on Facebook. Your dedication to each patient and family we touch in 2018 makes Research the regional destination for specialized care. Partnering hospitals, first responders and hundreds of highly-trained physicians trust us with their patients. Trust - this is the greatest honor we can ever earn.
“Above all else, we are committed to the care and improvement of human life.” The best of holidays to you and your family,

Healthy Habits Superfood Spotlight: Tea The Superfood of the Month is tea. Tea originated in China and was discovered in 2737 BC. According to legend, the herbalist Shennong accidently poisoned himself while searching for edible herbs. Before the poison could overcome him, a leaf fell into his mouth and upon chewing he was revived. Tea is now the second-most popular beverage consumed worldwide next to water and can be found in 80% of US households. The four varieties of tea are black, green, white, and oolong. Unsweetened tea offers a flavorful alternative to water and tea in all forms contains antioxidants. Some research suggests that regular tea drinkers (two or more cups per day) have lower risk of heart disease and stroke. Stop by the Superfood table in the cafeteria this month for more information and recipes featuring tea! Provided by: Courtney Schneider, RN, LD, Clinical Dietitian

I am a caregiver
My name is Julia King. I’m a senior at Research College of Nursing and the recipient of a scholarship from The Research Foundation. I’m very thankful for the contributions given to nursing student scholarships. Because of my scholarship, I have the freedom to be a caregiver. I am a tutor at Research College of Nursing’s Learning Resource Center, volunteer at American Cancer Society’s Hope Lodge and served in Uganda last summer. All of this wouldn’t be possible without support from you. Thank you.
Your gift helps our scholarship recipients stop worrying about the rising costs of their education and focus on becoming what they are meant to be, caregivers.
