Healthy Habits Superfood Spotlight: Tea The super food for December is tea! Whether you like black, green or chai, there are many great health benefits to drinking a cup of tea. The main health promoting substance in tea is called polyphenols. Polyphenols have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that help reduce the risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The antioxidants in black tea help reduce the risk of a heart attack, whereas green tea helps to lower total cholesterol levels and increase HDL levels (“good” cholesterol). Although tea itself contains only a few calories, it is important to be aware of added sugars and creamers that are used to flavor your drink. It is best to stick with unsweetened tea and use a lemon wedge, non-fat milk or sugar substitutes for additional flavor. A cup of tea is the perfect way to warm up on a cold winter’s night!
