Dear Research Family, As I learn more about Research Medical Center and our Kansas City market, it is so encouraging to be working with a team of some of the most talented and experienced professionals. We are in a competitive healthcare environment and it’s clear we are a winning team. As I’ve been visiting with employees and medical staff during my fi rst two months, there have been similar threads of conversation. This leads me to share from the common questions: What do you want to accomplish with your team at Research?

•Being the premier healthcare destination for all we serve is our vision statement. Attracting and retaining the best talent is key. Decreasing employee turnover, with a keen focus on decreasing nursing turnover is paramount . We also want every employee to love coming to work. Employee engagement is also so important. •Helping patients and their families actively participate in healthcare decisions is essential to quality care. Two-way caregiver and patient communication enhances patient experience and improves outcomes. Quality care and patient experience are certainly focus areas. •We are outgrowing our space in many clinical areas. Exploring eff icient ways to expand our services to accommodate new patients is something we need to explore. What are your priorities in your new position? Right now my priorities are centered around getting to know Research employees, medical staff and our services. Research Medical Center is well-established, complex organization. We are very involved in the communities we serve. During my fi rst year, I’m also learning all I can about our patients and their families, and referral sources who send us patients. I’m soaking up a lot of information! How did you get interested in healthcare? My fi rst job was in a hospital in Texas as a Spanish interpreter. I was drawn to helping people at their most vulnerable times. Then I learned about opportunities at HCA and I am blessed to have had the opportunity to grow and learn with such a great organization. I hope you fi nd time to enjoy these fading summer days - fall is on the way! Warm Regards,

Patient Testimonials Orthopedics Sara is first in the region! And she’s jumping up and down. Dr. Brian Kindred surgically replaced Sara’s degenerated hip with a custom-designed hip implant. “Going from feeling horrible all the time . . . to now is unbelievable,” says Sara. Her pain and inability to do anything was destroying her personality, her relationships, and her appetite. After surgery, “My pain was gone and I was walking the next day. I stepped up a full flight of stairs on my second day home. I don’t need pain medication. It’s an incredible feeling.” Dr. Kindred is one of only a few surgeons in the region trained in this procedure, and the first to perform a custom total hip implant. And Sara loves her new life! Neurscience Walter had worked for years looking down and with age, the curvature of his cervical spine became more severe, causing pain and impacting his life activities. In addition to his severe spine curvature, his symptoms were pain, stiffness, and and sensations in his shoulders, arms, and hands. Then he was referred to neurosurgeon Dr. Peter Basta at Midwest Neuroscience Institute at RMC. After spinal laminectomy surgery and a brief stay with Research’s inpatient rehabilitation experts, Walter is home as a new man! Walter says he hasn’t felt this good in decades. He thanks Dr. Basta, and his his therapists and nurses Megan, Melanie, Ashley and a few more. He said his posture is straight and his neck pain is gone. HCA Midwest Health offers specialized care helping people with neurological issues.

The nurses are very supportive, and the certifi ed nurse midwives that deliver at the hospital are amazing. They made me feel very empowered and safe during my labor. The big, jetted tubs in the delivery rooms make labor easy and comfortable. The nurses are very supportive of breastfeeding and skin to skin contact with your newborn. Birthing at Research Medical Center is beautiful!” Oncology “Bless Sarah Cannon Cancer Center at Research Medical Center. The care that they provided my wife in her fi ght with lung cancer was outstanding.”

Healthy Habits HAPPENINGS Superfood Spotlight: Apple
EMPLOYEE QUARTERLY AWARD RECOGNITION
Known for their fiber content, apples are a good source of both cholesterol lowering soluble fiber and gut-benefiting insoluble fiber. Soluble fiber is found inside of the apple, while insoluble fiber is concentrated in the skin. Apples are also a good source of vitamin C and rich in the antioxidant quercetin. Apples are a versatile ingredient and can be incorporated into a variety of dishes, including a low calorie dessert, dried to make apple chips, pureed into applesauce, sautéed with vegetables for a sweet kick or stirred into morning oatmeal.
