Dear Research Family March was a good month at Research – employees are caring for patients with Integrity, Compassion, Always, Respect and Excellence! And the spring weather makes it easier for our patients to get to the care they need. Together, Research doctors and care teams take care of patients with more than 35 regional hospitals and 2,200 partnering physicians and providers nationwide. Our tele-health connections are growing regionally too – neonatology, behavioral health, stroke\neurology, neurosurgery, cardiology and more. More great news - we’ve been selected by the Neuro-critical Care Society for a grant for a site visit to help develop more specialized Neurocritical Care pharmacists! This includes our pharmacists being invited to present at their annual meeting in Vancouver. Kudos to our pharmacy team who are developing new pharmacists while they offer the latest in pharmacology for our patients. It’s exciting to be part of the change to new uniforms! Our teams look so crisp and integrated - I think our patients will appreciate it too. I’ll be wearing my new uniform when I spend time shadowing in departments. Thank you to everyone who worked hard at making this happen! Construction is complete and the new RMC Visitor Entrance is open! Greeters are at this entrance and parking will improve! Welcome Spring and Royals Baseball! Sincerely,

RMC Neuroscience and Trauma Report
RMC Leaders Share What the HCA Healthcare ABATE Study Means to Patient Care: This study demonstrates how local HCA Midwest Hospitals, including Research Medical Center, benefit from the scale of HCA Healthcare nationally. Our ability to capture data to improve patient care ‘real time’ drives local health care delivery. The ABATE Trial builds on previous research conducted at HCA Healthcare hospitals and published by the New England Journal of Medicine that documented how intensive care units, including Research Medical Center, reduced infections and antibiotic resistant bacteria. Daily bathing with the antiseptic soap chlorhexidine (CHG) more effectively reduced hospital-acquired bacterial infections than bathing with ordinary soap and water. Researchers did find that patients with medical devices experienced a substantial benefit if they received the bathing interventions, specifically a 31 percent decrease in bloodstream infections and a nearly 40 percent decrease in antibiotic resistant organisms, MRSA and vancomycin-resistant enterococcus (VRE). Healthy Habits Superfood Spotlight: Lettuce Leafy greens include all types of lettuce, such as, romaine, kale, spinach, arugula, and turnip greens. Leafy greens are common in salads and sandwiches, but can also be added to soups, smoothies, omelets, and casseroles. This low calorie vegetable provides fiber, water, vitamins, and minerals at just 10-25 calories per 1 cup (raw) serving! The dark green varieties are especially rich in vitamin K, vitamin A, antioxidants, potassium, and folate. Be sure to only wash your leafy greens right before you plan to use them, washing ahead of time makes them spoil faster. Check out the Superfood table in the cafeteria this month for more information and recipes featuring leafy greens! Provided by: Courtney Schneider, RN, LD, Clinical Dietitian
